Problem Moving Large Files to Sparse Image

Hi All,
So I'm playing around with sparse images (new to mac so trying to learn lots). I occasionally share an external terabyte usb HDD with workmates and want to use a password protected image to save my files on it. I will be using about 200gb of space. A few good people here put me onto sparse images as opposed to dmg images which is great however I've run into a couple of problems...
Firstly when I try to copy a folder of work (I do photography) to the sparse image that is more than about 4Gb I get a message saying it cannot copy as there isn't enough space on the image to do so. I'm assuming this is something due to the image creating free space on the fly so therefore am wondering if there is a way of increasing this??
Secondly, and more alarming for me is that after copying about 50Gb of work I discovered that whilst the files seem to be the correct size in the image they cannot be previewed or opened. The error says it may be damaged or to use a file format preview recognises. I tried copying a few movies too and found that vlc cannot play them too.
Hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction with this.
As a side note....I am quite fastidious about backing up so no work going into this image will be done so without a backup saved elsewhere.
Cheers
Matt

HI,
"*4Gb I get a message saying it cannot copy as there isn't enough space"*
Make sure have enough free space on your startup disk to do this.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
This is the best paragraph I've read on these forums...
*"I am quite fastidious about backing up so no work going into this image will be done so without a backup saved elsewhere"*
Backing up your important documents can save many a headache later on. Good on you!
Try repairing disk permissions and see if that helps.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and *restart your Mac.*

Do some testing to get your method working right with some less than important footage.
Copy/paste files where you want then.
Use the FCE Reconnect feature to tell FCE where the newly copied files reside.
Make sure the new location and files are working as expected with your Projects.
Delete the original files if no longer required.

  • Lightroom problems with large folders of Raw images

I have a problem processing folders with a large number of Raw images in Lightroom and the same folder is easily processed in Adobe Bridge (without much loading time). The folder locked up Lightroom more than once. The folder has Nikon D2X and D2H .NIF files and it has 850 images. I bought Lightroom to simplify the editing and sorting and sorting process but I often work out of large folders like this. Is Bridge a better answer for what I am looking for or am I doing something wrong (like not waiting long enough).

It can take some ime for LR to import a large folder of RAWs. But once in it should be faster.
How are you importing. Are they already on your HD, or coming from the camera with copy, or a cardreader?

  • Problems copying large files to external disks

I have a lot of media and so multiple USB and network based external hard disks.
I'm having trouble with two in particular that are recent buys. I initially mounted them via a USB hub onto my Time Capsule, but when I had errors, I've now tried mounting them directly to my MacBook Air - and for comparison directly to a Windows laptop.
And I'm only having problems when it's a Mac doing the copying (MBA to either USB mounted via Time Capsule or directly USB mounted on the MBA).
The problem is that the drive appears to behave OK for initial copies - but I'm trying to put a set of old movies (captured from a VCR ages ago that I'd recorded off TV) onto one of the drives and (a) it takes ages to copy and (b) eventually I get a write failure. The specific error message is
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "" can't be written. (Error code -36)
I"ve tried a whole variety of setups - as I've said via Time Capsule and directly mounted. I also wondered if the file system on the drive would make a difference. Out of the box it was formatted with FAT32 and when that failed I've now reformatted with MacOS file system - which I would have thought would give better compatibility (and I've read that FAT32 has a large file size limit - although I think it's 4GB and while I do have one file at 4.04GB, it's not failing the copy on that file).
I've also connected the drive (when formatted FAT32) to a Windows laptop and (a) it copies faster and (b) it copies successfully.
Any suggestions for this? Is there some kind of large file (all are >1GB) copy issue with USB mounted devices in OSX?

As I mentioned in my original post while the disks were originally formatted FAT32 I reformatted then and changed them to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so that isn't the issue. I still have the problem with the disks using Apple format.
I've noticed that if I do the copy in pieces, it seems to work. I.e. if I select the full set of 45GB in one copy and paste operation (dragging and dropping using Finder) it fails part way through.
But if I copy 3/4 movies at a time going back until I have copied all of them then I can get all of them on the disk.
It suggests to me it's some kind of issue with copying and pasting a very large amount of data in Snow Leopard?

  • PROBLEM SAVING LARGE FILES ON ACROBAT READER XI

I download a largish document (70 - 100 MB) from the on-line storage folder of a friend. But am unable to save it on my PC. I have the recent version of Acrobat Reader 11.0.5 on a PC using Windows 8 and this opens this or any other pdf file without problem. But as soon as I go to save the large files the programme crashes with a 'There's a problem' notice. I then discover it has saved a file name but without file content. Any ideas how I can tackle this problem? Colin

"Online storage" - does that mean a website that is accessed via a browser?  If so, you can download the document by right-clicking on the link to the PDF, then select 'Save link as' or 'Save target as'.

  • 34GB File Vault sparse image not mounting

    Hi there,
    I have an ibook G4, OS X 10.4.11, Capacity 55.77 GB, Available 5.53 GB
I've had my home folder (34.69 GB) encrypted with File Vault for about 5 years. A few weeks ago I had to hard shut down when Safari crashed. Upon restart I got the scary "unable to login as this user at this time". I was able to create a new user account. I scoured the internet and followed apple instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2631
I can see my old sparse image file. But when I get to step 18 above, I get the message: The following disk images failed to mount, lockedouthome.sparseimage, reason--> input/output error
When I try to back up the sparse image to an external hard drive, I get the message: The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "lockedouthome.sparseimage" could not be read or written.
Is there anything else I can possibly do before I trash the home folder and start over? I have backups of my itunes and iphoto library, but never got around to backing up the Word documents and web archives that are career related. Please help! I hate to trash it, when I can see the file sitting right there with all my stuff looking like it's still inside (34 GB).
    Thanks,

I completely understand the money issue myself.
But DW is your best cheapest hope of any recovery, in fact I do not even buy a new Mac/OS until DW supports it, that's no guarantee it wiil work though.
Could you please explain what you mean by "if you don't have an external drive to boot from" in regards to using the Disk Warrior CD or DVD?
I don't know how you were backing up, nor whether these drives are bootable, but in this day & age it pays to have a bootable Clone of your drive, DW & other Apps can be run from say an external drive to repair your Internal drive... since you cannot repair the HD you're booted from, you need either another boot drive, or a CD/DVD to boot from.

  • Is anyone else having problems with large files, such as installation images, becoming corrupted when downloaded in Mavericks using Safari?

I am finding that when I try to download a disk image file, such as Office 2011, it reads invalid checksum, is corrputed and will not install. I tried to download it several times and even unchecked in the Disk Utility Preference Pane to verify checksums. The way I solved the problem, was to go to my Windows Machine and download the image, put it on a USB flash drive and install it on my Mac from the stick. Not a proper solution, but it did work. Has anyone out there had this problem? This is applying to any large .dmg files not just Office 2011.

I'm having exactly the same problem with the dmg file for Office 2011, tried downloading from my windows machine with no luck, still having the invalid checksum message.

  • Illustrator CS4 problem placing large files

I don't know if this is a new option I need to set in illustrator CS4 or if this is a bug but when I try to place large tif files into illustrator (larger than 15mb) it just doens't do anything. No error message or dialogue. Just acts like you never placed the file. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

When I get back to the States I will I am in Amsterdam today but I will look at it on wednesday but I have placed such fiels both flattened and layered tiffs.
The only thing it will not place is 16 bit tiffs, it should automatically convert them to 8 bit but let me see what it does with 16 buit tiffs that are linked.

  • Problem downloading large files via Safari

When downloading large video files (for example, from FilesAnywhere.com), my download stars off OK and then slowly gets slower and slower... and slower and then seems to grind to a halt. I'm currently attempting to download a 165MB file which has taken all day so far, and the time remaining just gets longer and longer. It now stands at another 18 hours, but by the morning it will most likley tell me there's a week left.
Does anybody know what is causing this? I can download via FTP with no problem very fast -it's just via Safari that seems to be the problem. I'm on a home broadband account.
I've encountered this problem before and I just had to give up on the download.

Good to see the problem was solved from the suggestion provided. Glad to have helped.

I recently ran into some problems with my hardrive and had to get it replaced at the mac store.
Unfortunatly, i only ran a partial time machine backup on the hardrive before i lost it.
Fotrunatly though, it did manage to save some important stuff, but now for the next problem....
I have dragged my files from my external hardrive with the partial time machine backup onto my new desktop but it wont let me do stuff with them
    this includes;
asking for my password whenever i want to delete one of them
saying "cannnot be modified" whenever i try to drag the files to a new location.
as you can imagine, this is a bit of a pain.
    anyone have anything similair?
    help would be great

That is not how you restore from a Time Machine backup.
Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Problem moving hidden files from Iphoto to Aperture

About a year ago I installed Aperture and moved all my iphoto files to Aperture. I have just now discovered that the files I had hidden are missing. I just updated to Maverics & updated my Aperture program, but don't know if I update iphoto if I will be able to access the files I had hidden. I don't see a way to unhide files in Aperture. I can search for a file on my mac and it will bring it up that it exists in iphoto, so I know they are still in my library on iphoto. I have an external hard drive that I keep my photos on. I'm not very computer savvy, so I need an easy solution if possible. Thanks for your help!

See this document:       Using the Unified Photo Library  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5043
Photos hidden using the Hide Photo command in iPhoto cannot be accessed in Aperture. If you open the library in iPhoto, unhide the photos, and then open the library again in Aperture, the previously hidden photos are accessible.
Photos rated as rejected in Aperture are not accessible in iPhoto. If the photo's rating is subsequently raised in Aperture, it will then be accessible in iPhoto.
So to unhide your photos, update iPhoto to a compatibe version. If your current Aperture version is Aperture 3.5.1, update iPhoto to 9.5.1, then you will be able to unhide the photos.

  • Problems with large file

    Dear all,
I am working on a conversion of ebcdic file to ascii format. I am able to convert 500 mb file in 713,634ms. But a file of size 1.5 GB it takes 8,299,389ms. which is more than 10 times than the other file. the pattern is that, the conversion is very slow until 70MB, then it really sloggs till around 1.1 Gb and slows down again till the end.
I am using randomaccessfile to read and write. but the read and write is sequential. Using two 3 MB buffers to read and write. I am running the application in HP-UX 11.11 with 8 Gig Memory with 4 CPU.
Can somebody explain me why this happens.
    Thank you,
    dhana

I have solved the problem. It was an error in my part.
    i was using
    raf.write(buffer, 0, length);
The length was wrong. i correct it with the right length. The write started to work faster.
    Thx,
    Dhana
