Problem seems to be in computer, sometimes iPod can't be written to, etc.

This is an ongoing saga. When I plug my iPod into the front USB port of my G5 and try to drag anything new into it I am told that it cannot be read from or written to. If I plug into the back USB port it let's me add a few songs then I get the same message, then it lets me add a few songs and I get the message again. If I plug into the USB hub, then it allows me to add songs, but it's incredibly slow and drains the power from my iPod.
I have ruled out the iPod itself as the source of the problem. It's already been replaced once. I took the new one into a Mac dealer, they restored it and everything worked perfectly. I took it home and still had all the same problems. It seems to work fine on my Macbook.
So the problem seems to actually lie in the computer, but I don't know where. I've run Disk Utilities and Norton (several times) but, despite fixing the errors that were found, it made no difference. There is nothing useful posted in the iPod support section of this site, but I'm not sure where else to look.
Anyone have any ideas?

I think you're going to find that it's not your computer. I'm having the same issue with iPod on a PC. Seems to have cropped up with iTunes 7 - but that could be coincidence. In my case, I've narrowed it down to an issue of quantity. If I try to update more than (and this number is approximate, because it varies) 50 songs at once, it will lock up - and the only thing I can do is restore. I also noticed that this started when my library got up over 9000 (i'm at 10,500 now) so, I only have about 6GB left, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. What I have done up to this point is run the onboard iPod diagnostics (including the FULL hard drive scan which takes forEVER - start it, make sure you're plugged into power and go to bed), restored and SO far, things seem to be ok, but I've now noticed some weird skipping in some of my songs today, so I may have spoken too soon. I use my iPod quite a bit both as a data transport and, of course, audio player. But I wonder what the MTBF is on these little drives. They may just not last that long as much as they have to spin up and seem to warm up with repeated use.
Just some thoughts...

  • When my ipod is plugged into my computer music disappears, sometime it tries to upload songs, clears my playlists, and can't locate the songs files. All the same songs are in my Itunes library on my computer. What can i do?

When I plug my Ipod into my computer it shows all my songs on it as reloading onto the device,
and sometimes it can't locate the files or they are just gone. All my songs are in my Itunes library

manage the content myself. It has happened multiple times.
I have cleared my Ipod off as well as my computer, and put all the music back on without seeing
any improvement. And as of today when I tried again it shows some songs on there but with 3 copies
of the same song trying to upload onto my ipod. And have of my playlist where empty. I am getting
frustrated and don't know what to do. Help.

    Hello Arthur,
It sounds like your iPod is not recognized in iTunes and in My Computer (sometimes) on your Windows computer.  I found an article with steps to address this:
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

When you still have the problem after restoring to factory defaults/new iPod then you very likely have a hardware problem and an appointment a th Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • I tried to sync some new songs bought from iTunes into my ipod using my laptop, (for the first time).  It would not add the new songs to the ipod.  I tried several times, with same result.  I never had this problem using my desk top computer.

I also am having a problem with the songs I purchased using the laptop not showing on the desk top itunes, even though it is authorized to do so.  The new songs did show up on the iPad iTunes, however.  Have no idea why.  I thought this happened automatically.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

  • I set up my emails coming in on my computer so they would appear on my ipad, the only problem I am having is that sometimes my emails are only coming in on my ipad and not on my computer.  Until I open them on my ipad they will not appear on my computer.

I set up my emails so when they arrive on my computer, they would also arrive on my Ipad.  The problem I'm having is there are times when an email arrives on my Ipad but not on my computer.  Unless I open the email on my Ipad, it will not open on my computer.  How can I have the two divices work in unison where the emails arrive on both at the same time?

Both libraries would need to have been setup to use home sharing with the same Apple ID in order for that to work.

  • Hi , I have one of the early generation ipods which contains quite a lot of music. I bought a new Apple iMac computer sometime ago and I want to do is sycronise my ipod to my new computer so I can further add more music to it. Any advise much appreciated.

Hi, can anyone advise how I syncronise my ipod nano which is one of the early versions to my Apple imac pc. the ipod already contains a lot of music on it.
    Thanks

iTunes syncing generally goes one way, from the iTunes library on the computer to the iPod.
You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store.  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, you can add them to your Mac's iTunes library.
If you still have access to your old computer with your previous iTunes library, a more complete way to transfer your iTunes library is from computer to computer.  You can post back if this is possible and you want to do it.

problem is specific to this computer, at home with aol only.

I should have explained further. The game opens in a new window over to the upper left of my screen, leaving the original page underneath. I tried minimizing it so that I could get to my toolbar and did the View > Zoom > Reset. This has no effect. The lower portion of the game is still not showing. Using other browsers the window or frame of the game is much larger, therefore everything shows.

Ok, I'v tried to do what you guys told me to do...
I'v open the cabinett to write down my rating on PSU..
    Rating output watts 400W, +5V +3.3V:240W, +5V +3.3V & +12V:380W
(PS. it doesnt tell me anything, as I'm noob at this area  )
I'v tried to test "memtest", but it take dam long time..
After 20-30 min, only 0,2 coverage + 1 error.. and I just stopped it..take to long.
Perhaps I enter too much memory? I'v putted 1024..!!!!
You should write the Amper data written on the supply, also check if it has a brand name or if it is generic. Generic PSUs (as I have discovered) are sometimes not as powerful as advertised, so a 400W generic PSU might be causing your problems.
On the other hand a memory check error is a sure sign that you have an error with your memory ;-) The check repeats itself, so it might be that you've seen it at 2% because it has done 1 cycle. Try borowing some older DDR RAM from someone and trying with it, if it works than lower the frequency of RAM in the bios to 333 as someone has suggested since it's sometimes the problem.

  • Problem transferring Itunes to new computer

After unsuccessfully trying to use MA to move all of our files from our old G4 to a new Intel MacBookPro (our computers kept freezing up 1/2 way through, I've since read that this isn't the best way to do it) We then tried transferring everything manually via firewire cable and target disk mode but not using MA. This seemed to be working until we got to iTunes. We followed the instructions posted here, Consolidating the library, moving the iTunes music folder and putting it in the exact location on the new computer. Everytime it would seem to be working but after 4.28 g's it would just stop and freeze up. We have about 15 g's to transfer. I keep looking through all these posts trying to see if we missed something but it sure seems we were doing everything correct. We then tried using our iPod as an external drive by enabling disk mode but kept getting a message that there wasn't enough space on the iPod (even though there was) I have since read that even a 20G iPod can't hold more than 4G's in disk mode. Any advice on how to get our 15G of music and movies from the old G4 to the new computer would be appreciated. I don't have an external drive, but would consider buying one if I thought it would help. I'm just afraid I will run into the same problem trying to move it to an ED.

Thanks - but I discovered that my new itunes folder wasn't empty after all, in fact it was full of files that were invisible (not showing in the music folder) from my failed previous attempt. I dragged it to Trash (though didn't empy it), and dragged the properly organized folder from the external drive into the same place at users/username/music. A dialog box immediately came up and I selected "Replace all", which I hope has overwritten all the old data that may be hanging around. At least the music folder now has all the right files in it and the library file is the same. But will this have linked everything properly? Can I just open iTunes now?

  • Several problems installing iTunes on new computer

Am trying to migrate my iTunes library, etc. to my new Dell computer running Windows 7.  My husband is attempting the same thing.  We have encountered different problems.
I installed iTunes on the new computer (without Quick Time initially.)  I authorized the new computer, then used my iPod to transfer my purchased music.  Next, I used home sharing to transfer the podcasts I follow and the music I ripped from my own CDs.  This all seemed to work.  Finally, I exported my library to an xml file, sent it to myself, then used it on the new computer to import my playlists.  Thought I was all set, but now when I open iTunes, I get an error message saying I have an audio configuration problem.  iTunes does come up and I can listen to my music on my headphones.  Read a few past discussions on this error message which indicated I should have installed Quick Time.  So, did that.  But the error message still pops up.  Any suggestions?
My husband used a cable connection to transfer files (not just iTunes-related) from his old computer to his new one.  Then he followed the process I described, above.  Resulted in multiple duplications of his playlists.  How should he resolve this?
    Thanks.
