If they both turn on for a second or two and then it drops you back at the command line, it would appear that X is working ok.
What wm/de are you using? .... or maybe what login manager are you using?
Have you checked your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to see what it says?
Normally when you are dropped to the command line, there would be an error message on the screen in front of you; it should be the same as in the log file, btw.
Also, when did this start happening?
Has it ever worked?  If so, what changed?

  • How to set up dual monitors with a Mac Mini

    The Mac Mini has only one video output port. I very nearly didn't buy a Mac Mini system because I need to work with two monitors. I use the second monitor to display information in Web pages, PDFs, and Word documents while I am working in the main window.
    However, I discovered after quite a bit of Googling that it is possible to set up dual monitors using an inexpensive USB video adapter (about $70).
    So I bought my Mini (1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 200GB 7200rpm Seagate Momentus), and I also bought a USB video adapter called the EVGA Plus.
    I've installed this system and used it now for a week, and I am quite pleased with it. So I thought I'd pass this information along to anyone who's interested. Please note that, although this is my first post to this forum, this isn't spam -- I have no financial relationship with any of the companies mentioned here, other than as a customer.
    LINKS
    EVGA Plus:
    http://www.evga.com/articles/409.asp
    Their literature does not mention Mac OS X compatibility. However, the underlying technology is made by Display Link. You can download beta Mac OS X drivers from their site:
    Go to Display Link to download the beta Mac OS support -- see
    http://www.displaylink.com/macbetadrivers.html
    The disk image includes a very well written PDF document that explains the driver's status and limitations.

    NOTES
    * The DisplayLink driver is beta. It doesn't support 2D or 3D accelerated graphics. You can't use it to display iPhoto slide shows, for example. However, I need to be able to display a Web page, document, or PDF in the second monitor while I am working in the first. I've found this solution to be quite acceptable for this purpose.
    * Several other companies make USB video units that use the same DisplayLink support, so they should work, too. However, they are more expensive -- largely because they're set up to function as port expanders, I believe. The EVGA Plus was the only unit priced under $100 when I did my search.
    * USB does not have very much bandwidth, so you might be surprised that to hear that it's possible to use USB to drive a monitor! You'll find that the display isn't as fast as DVI, but for my purposes, I've found it quite acceptable.
    * The EVGA Plus comes with a terrible USB to mini USB cable that will cause all sorts of display problems. Replace it with the type of cable that is used to hook up digital cameras to a USB port.
    * Once everything is installed, you can use the Displays in System Preferences (or just click the icon on the menu bar) to adjust the second monitor. You can choose display resolutions (depending on your monitor's ability, of course). Rotation works. You can also right-click the second monitor and choose a different background color or graphic.
    Don't expect miracles. Don't go this route if you want to run videos or games in the second monitor. And if you get an EVGA Plus, replace that horrible cable!
    I hope this information is helpful.
    Bryan

    There has been quite a lot of discussion here about driving twin displays with the mini, and more recently about the potential for USB video adapters to facilitate this, particularly in the light of several vendors claiming they have suitable MacOS devices and drivers 'almost ready'.
    The DisplayLink solution seems to be the one most suggested as viable, though it's a pity they have not yet been able to move their drivers from beta - I suspect that puts a few people off. It's therefore good to hear of a real-world experience that should help others decide whether or not to go this route!

  • [Solved] Setting up dual monitor + laptop screen on Alienware M17xR4

    Hi everyone,
    My apologies in advance if this has been asked before, I was not able to find any relevant information for this anywhere. I have Alienware M17xR4 with nvidia GTX660M graphics card. I also two extra 24" Asus VS248 monitors besides my laptop screen. They are connected via HDMI and DisplayPort (DVI on the monitor) and I want to have all 3 displays working, if that is not possible, then two monitors working side-by-side.
    The problem is that I have not been to able to work the two monitors so far, I did at one point managed to make one big screen out of these two monitors but I want a Windows-like behaviour wherein I can drag the two windows between two screens and maximise them on individual monitors. Right now I have completely messed up my display in such a manner that the TTY1 gets stuck on the boot while trying to start the login manager. I can however boot through TTY2 (ALT+F2) and change any configuration.
    I have tried deleting xorg.conf and then regenerating it via nvidia-conf but that doesn't help either.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello i think i may be able to help with your problem, i had a similar one
    I have an alienware m14xr2 and i also tried to do the same but i noticed when using the nvidia card with the nvidia drivers i had a problem, i assume that the external display is connected to the intel card, as it worked perfectly with the intel only driver setup. To fix this issue I use bumblebee, the nvidia optimus alternative for Linux which uses the intel card as primary, allowing me to use both external and internal displays in extended mode, and run what i need on the nvidia card and pull it over with a virtualgl bridge, i even seam to get a performance increase with bumblebee over the regular nvidia drivers running all the time (only when using primus).
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bumblebee
    Here is a link to the bumblebee page i used, though i had problems setting up that i found many alienware users had that can be fixed in the troubleshooting area bellow "[ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU: No devices detected"
    I noted many alienware uses had this problem in my search.
    Also the package arandr is an xrandr front end may help in the initial setup as i had problems using the display config built into cinnamon to do this.
    https://www.archlinux.org/packages/comm … ny/arandr/
    Now hopefully this makes at least dual screen working, i use dual with hdmi, and the vga should work ok for your third screen, but im not sure about the display port, never tried it and i believe it is on the Nvidia card, but there are instructions on the wiki page above you may be able to use about multiple monitors when the output is on the other card that may help, again try the vga first works on mine.
    As for fixing your current xorg issues, i also did a thing in my attempts to get a working situation and eventually gave up, in the end reinstalled arch and followed the wiki and it worked, but mabye try removing all of x org and your display environment and re-install as per the bumblebee wiki.
    i hope this helps you get multiple monitors, i know how amassing they are to use

  • Dual Monitor/View problem......

    I am having a problem running my dual monitors with my MSI gf4 ti 4200 128mb card...... i re-installed my drivers (i tried 30.00's and 30.82's) and they work fine, but once i reboot or change the resolution it'll show 4 monitors in my device manager instead of 2, and my resolution cannot change from 840x480x32 (used to be only 840x480x8  )....atleast i have 32 bit now.... but i think its cause the other 2 useless monitors are using up the resources for this settings, because when they arent installed it will let me go higher in resolution...... any experts here know anything about a fix or solution for all those monitors using "EXTEND MONITOR ONTO DESKTOP" without having 4 monitors showing? thx in advance,
    RaZoR
    ps.... i tried uninstalling the monitors but they just keep reappearing.....any MSI tech's know what i should do??

    set "first display" - monitor. !

  • Xrandr, dual monitor, openbox - setting the main monitor?

    Hello fellow archers,
    got some kind of nasty problem here:
    I got a notebook (on the right side) and a old monitor (on the left side).
    By using the handy xrandr tool I can set up dual monitors (almost) fine:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1400x1050 --left-of LVDS
    That should do the trick, but unfortunatle conky and gmrun than appear on the left-monitor. But I would like to have my notebook screen as the main-screen.
    So basically I would like to have what I get with
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1400x1050 --right-of LVDS
    just with the minor difference that I can swap screens when I move my mouse over the left-notebook-edge / right-monitor-edge instead of the other way round.
    Hope you get what I mean and maybe someone even knows a solution.

    err. there has to be a more elegant solution! openbox has excellent support for dualheading now.
    the xrandr thingie togehter with kde works like this afaicr:
    xrandr --output 1 --right-of 2
    leads to :
    [ screen 2 ] [screen 1 (main)]
    maybe this works with openbox just as well
    cheers Barde
    EDIT: i'm an idiot ^^ there is an option in the openbox configuration file... it's called placement and it's under
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <openbox_config xmlns="http://openbox.org/3.4/rc">
    </snip>
    <placement>
    <policy>Smart</policy>
    <!-- 'Smart' or 'UnderMouse' -->
    <center>yes</center>
    <!-- whether to place windows in the center of the free area found or
    the top left corner -->
    <monitor>Any</monitor>
    <!-- with Smart placement on a multi-monitor system, try to place new windows
    on: 'Any' - any monitor, 'Mouse' - where the mouse is, 'Active' - where
    the active window is -->
    </placement>
    </snip>
    </openbox_config>

  • New arch installation, problems with dual monitors

    tldr: nvidia setting are not saving when when I leave a session.
    yesterday I wiped my computer and went from ubuntu to arch on my desktop (been using arch on laptop for a while). I'm having problems getting my dual monitor settings to save. I configure the settings via nvidia server settings and it works fine but when I go to reboot or log out it goes back down to just one screen and I have reset up nvidia.
    gdm has never seen both monitors its always just the single screen.
    software
    nvidia drivers 280.13
    xfce4 v4.8.0
    gdm 3.0.4-2
    kernal 3.0-arch
    my system is up to date with a yaourt -Syu
    Sorry if this has been answered but my googlefoo was not strong today.

    GDM *should* use a xorg.conf if it exists.... I also noticed that Arch keeps a xorg.conf.d folder, which I'm not sure the nvidia-settings app knows how to handle.
    Also, make sure you are running the nvidia-settings app with root privileges, as you'll need those to write a xorg.conf in /etc/X11.

  • Dual monitor setting on PXI 8108

    there is only one DVI port in PXI8108, how can I set up dual monitors?
    Best,
    Sam

    Hi samybae,
    You should be able to use dual monitors because the controller uses DVI-I (single link) connectors. This allows you to break the signal out to a DVI as well as VGA connector using a splitter.

    So it looks to me like both displays are being detected.  The geometry looks such that one display is on top of the other, but I can change that using an xorg.conf.d config file (e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … xorg.conf).  I also tried using arandr.
    The real problem is that the display on HDMI3 just isn't "waking up".  The power is on, but it just sits there in sleep mode.
    Any help would be great.  I might just be missing something simple.  Thanks.
    Edit:  I just saw a short list of window managers near the bottom of the Arch Multihead page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … _xorg.conf).  I don't see openbox on that list.  Does that mean I'm SOL if I want to use openbox with multiple monitors?  This page seems to imply that it should work fine with openbox http://magnatecha.com/dual-monitors-wit … nd-xrandr/.

    I use XFCE, and when I boot my computer I just run:
    xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --auto --output DVI-I-2 --auto --left-of DVI-I-1
    I'm assuming if you modify the names appropriately that it'll work too.  I have had issues before trying to run dual monitors without taking both outputs off of a single video card (which is what I'm doing now).  For example, I had a graphics card with one (VGA) output and a VGA output on my motherboard.  But, connecting the graphics card disabled the on-board VGA.  So it is possible (I'm not an expert here) that two displays coming off the motherboard may not work for hardware reasons.

  • Dual monitor color issue - oversaturated image in CS4

    Hi, I wonder if you can help. I found people having similar issues, but never seen an actual answer, so your input would be greatly appreciated.
    My set-up:
    MacBook Pro Dual Core intel based 15.4 2.6GHz running OS X 10.5.6 - also my primary display
    HP LP2475- secondary display
    CS4
    Both monitors were calibrated using X-rite Eye-one LT (each with a separate profile)
    I've tried calibrating each monitor 3 times and still get the proble,
    My problem:
    Running in dual monitor mode in bridge or safari/firefox- no problems at all: almost consistent colour between both monitors.
    When I open the images in Photoshop CS4, they look fine on my MacBook screen, but when I drag them over to the HP the color is grossly oversaturated - especially in the red. What am I doing wrong? (in fact on the HP monitor, the color looks perfect in bridge but super insanely saturated in CS4)
    Does anyone have a clue on how I can fix this?
    Thanks!

    You say your running 10.5.6?  Why haven't you updated to 10.5.8?
    FWIW, I never had color issues under 10.5.X, however I have since upgrade to 10.6.

    I get that ^^: looks like the VGA screen IS 1280x1024, but for some reason ratpoison thinks it's 1280x800 (all open windows have that size).
    this does not happen in DWM, but should work ok with ratpoison too...so I'm guessing it's a wrong setup on my part.
    Enabling Xinerama in xorg.conf doesn't even start X at all...it segfaults
    What other steps should I take to makea working dual monitor environment? I would like to have 2 X screens btw (my laptop to be screen :1 and CRT screen :0 (the default))

    Scratch that..it was working..but silly me forgot to use ":nextscreen" in Ratpoison..so the windows would open at 1280x800 since the damn thing though I'm still on the first monitor

  • Dual Monitors on Mac Mini Late 2014 not working on Dell S2340Lc

    Hey guys,
    Got a mac mini and using it mainly for work. Working for an ISP and no one has used macs and I've opted to be the poor sucker that gets to deal with old people that don't know how to mac very goodly.
    I have two Dell S2340Lc monitors. I have one connected up via HDMI and that works perfectly fine. I turned off the mac, I plugged in Monitor 2 with a MiniDP/Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, powered on the mac and whilst it was booting, it had the Apple logo and the loading bar on the Dell display plugged in to the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and then once it loaded up the log in screen, it went to the HDMI display. I logged in and in the displays section, the monitor plugged in to the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter isn't being detected, however I can plug it in to a Samsung 55 Inch Smart TV and it works just fine. I can set up dual monitors between the TV and the monitor in HDMI, but the Dell S2340Lc will only work with a HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the mac mini and will not work through the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter. On the display it just says that there is no signal coming from the computer.
    Just wondering if any of you apple gurus had any ideas as to why this isn't working?
    Thanks!

    What if you switch monitors?

  • Dual Monitors with GPU and Motherboard not working

    Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else could help me out.
    So, I decided to hook up an old monitor of mine to my rig today and, lo and behold, the monitor isn't being detected by my computer.
    I've already got a monitor running through my GPU (NVidia GTX 960) via DVI.
    Currently tried connecting my second (old) monitor to my motherboard with DVI as well, but it isn't being detected.
    I went into my bios and forced my integrated graphics on, but when I checked in the device manager, it said my VGA graphics adapter "Cannot start (Error Code 10)"
    Also tried updating VGA graphics adapter drivers, but I had the latest drivers already.
    I'm not sure if that's related to the issue, but I thought it'd be worth mentioning.
    (What's also worth mentioning is that I'm a complete casual when it comes to computer building and such, lol)
    Motherboard is a Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3, supports VGA, DVI and HDMI.
    Monitor that I'm trying to connect supports both DVI and VGA.

    A lot of the 960's don't have 2 DVI's. However most have an additional HDMI and DisplayPort. I recommend you get an adapter from amazon or something. Just make sure that it will convert HDMI or DP to DVI. Usually amazon products have a good amount
    of questions already answered by buyers.
    Interesting that they'd go that route, I guess I just assumed since my 760 has two.
    I've set up dual monitors using one DVI and one HDMI before, but I ran into issues with screen sizing. Despite having two identical monitors set at the same resolution the mouse would not transmit over to the second monitor at the same height as it was on
    the first, so I had to buy an adapter like Joshua suggested.
