Problem with 720P HDV

I am having a problem playing Quicktime movies HDV 720p 60 and 30 shot from a JVC 250 onto the DR-HD100 it only plays the first couple seconds then stalls. Also on the MAC in finder the quicktime movies that work correctly the icon is a video of the movie, but the 720P movies that aren’t playing correctly show a quicktime icon no video. Have you heard of this issue? I didn’t have this issue before but we recently upgraded Qucktime and FCP.
I have a MAC OS 10.5.8
Quicktime 7.6.6
DR-HD100
FCP 7.0.2

When I play a 720p HDV in quicktime it will play for a few seconds then the video will freeze but keep playing the audio.

  • Problem with 720p mp4 import

I have some source material shot on a Sony T900. These are 720p files in mp4. When I play them in QT or VLC they look very good. When I import them into CS4 I get sections where the video 'blows out': big blocks of the image turn almost white or almost black. Interestingly, it seems that these episodes last for 15 frames.
I've tried a few different presets (wide screen avi, avchd 720p, hdv 720p30) with the same results.
I can see the problem both on the timeline and when I export.
I am wondering if I should convert these clips to AVI (or something) using another program (such as?) first.
Enlcosed are examples of when it is ok and when it is wacked out.
Thanks for the help, this is driving me a little crazy.

I have been following your story too.  It is fustrating when you can play the video fine in its original form but not import it and use it in CS4.
I have been trying Streamclip on my original mp4 files.  First I tried export to AVI with the following results:  They play fine in VLC and Windows but when I import them into Adobe they play real fast for the first 10 seconds then it goes to still frame for the rest of the clip length.  Very odd.  This is true for a variety of settings I tried.
Then I tried the export to DV.  This works.  The clips import corrrectly and they also do not require rendering in CS4.   But the clips are in 720x480.  This might end up being the way I go but still looking for a better solution.
This whole thing started when my AVCHD camera was stolen in Vietnam and all I had was the Sony T900 to shoot the video.

  • Problems with burning HDV projects to IDVD

I have been using iDVD to burn my HDV sequences and it has been working great. Just recently when I burn a DVD it comes up with a green band at the bottom of the DVD. It doesn't happen with SD projects. I just upgreaded to Ilife 8 and upgraded my operating system to 10.4.11, does anyone know if there is a problem with this and why all of a sudden I can't burn an a DVD.

    Hi iRose,
Thanks for giving all your info. Your free space on your hard drive is not enough to do a successful burn of the entire iPhoto Library. Do you have an external drive? Is your drive supported for iPhoto burning? usually on the internal that comes with the computer is supported.
Try instead to burn the entire iPhoto Library folder in the Finder using your external burner.
    Close iPhoto
    I can't burn a Cd or DVD
The next info is from iPhoto FAQ on the Apple site
Question 5: Can I burn a CD or DVD to back up my iPhoto library?
Answer: Yes, you can easily back up your iPhoto library by using the CD burning capabilities of Mac OS X. Simply insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use iDVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac.

  • SOLUTION: Are you having problems with using HDV, FCP X and iDVD?

If you edit HDV (TAPE) in FCP X and want to burn the video in iDVD you will find the following problem  .  .  .  iDVD squashes the image as shown in the screenshot below.
Whether you export as ProRes or H.264, iDVD will see it like this as a squashed image.
This is because iDVD does not recognise HDV anamorphic images unless they are in the Apple Intermediate Codec.
There are 2 solutions to this problem:-
    1. Create a ProRes 422 Custom Compressor Preset with a frame size of 1920 x 1080.
The only downside to this is that the conversion process in my 2008 iMac takes about 5 times realtime.
    2. Create an Apple Intermediate Codec preset for HDV.  This encodes on my iMac in around realtime, so it is at least 4 times faster than the ProRes solution.
Unfortunately, if you have Compressor 4 you cannot create Apple Intermediate Codec presets, but Compressor 3.5 will and what is more important, that preset can be installed in Compressor 4.
So you can export your HDV project from FCP X using Compressor Presets in either ProRes or AIC and use the resulting file in iDVD to get a correctly proportioned image like this.
I prefer to use the AIC preset as it is 4 times faster and there is no quality difference on the final DVD.
What do you do if you haven't got Compressor?
Well you can email me for a 12KB copy of the preset as I believe FCP X can use it even though you don't have Compressor.

    Ian,
    Thanks for the tip!

  • Capture problems with Canon HDV footage

Despite double checking all presets my FCP (5.1.4) capture window is not recognising HDV 1080i footage shot on the Canon XH A1. I'm only getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device" message. Firewire I'm using is working fine for DV footage. Any help VERY much appreciated !

Did you also check the settings on the camera?  Make sure it's set for proper output for the format you're trying to capture.

  • HDVD capture problems with a FX1

    Hi,
I have a problem in that when I try to capture using the "now" button on the capture screen and let it run for say 60 seconds across a number of clips it only captures the last couple of seconds. I tried to then log a the same clip using in and out settings and it made 4 clips in the bin 3 of which showed red with the Off Line and 1 with the last couple of seconds. I think I have all setting correct on the Sony FX1 and am using the latest version of FCPHD 5.0.4 any ideas on how to solve this problem would be much appreciated.
    Philip

Just in case anyone else has had the same problem, I have now cracked it. If, like me, you have a problem with importing HDV, here is how I solved it.
    1. Go to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302337 for instruction on trashing Prefs and the Users folder.
    2. Make sure you reset the scratch disc locations in the system prefs.
    2. On the capture screen go to clip settings and uncheck create new clip on start stop. With this checked it seems that only the last few seconds of your import. I wonder if that is a problem everyone has?
It's taken a week to find this so I hope anyone with the same problem benefits from this.
    HDV is amazing!

  • Problems with HDV footage from sony HDR - HC9

I have a new sony HDR-HC9 cam corder. I want to shoot in hi def (HDV) format for best quality, but I produce standard def DVDs as a finished product. I was hoping to use the built in iLink conversion from HDV to DV when downloading to the computer into iMovie. I have had many problems with this.
Usually, when I set it up to do the downconversion, I see a blue screen in iMovie, although iMovie will ff and rew the camera, no images come across. I experimented with setting the camera in DV record mode at the same time as I had the iLink down conversion set, and this appeared to work. I started downloading an hour tape, and when I came back 65minutes later (after it should have been done), saw the message that iMovie had quit. Reopened the project, and saw an hour worth of footage in the trash, but it was too crazy to reorder the clips from the trash back to the clips pane.
I resigned to import in hdv (1080i) format and not mess with hardware downconversion. This worked fine. I then added some chapter markers and shared the project with iDVD. I saved the project as an image file and then mounted it to check it for errors. The video was OK, but towards the end of the project, the sound was out of sync by a few seconds with the video.
I deleted encoded assets from the iDVD project, then reburned (save as image file). Same defect.
I then started a new iMovie project in standard DV widescreen, and dragged all of the clips from the HDV (1080i) project into the time line. It took over an hour for my mac mini to run the conversion, but the movie in iMovie appeared OK. I redid the iDVD project, and saved as image file. It appears to have worked correctly (although I have not looked at it on my widescreen TV yet to assess image quality.
    Questions:
    1) Has anyone had any luck getting HDR-HC9 iLink HDV-DV hardware conversion to work with iMovie, consistently?
    2) Can anyone comment on image quality issues with converting HDV to DV footage using iMovie software.
    3) Has anyone seen audio sync problems with iDVD from HDV original footage.
    Thanks

  • Problems with "Author once" workflow, can't transcode HDV to BD and DVD

Adobe claims that with Encore CS3 you can
"author once, deliver to three formats" -- Blu-ray, DVD and Flash. I have been doing some research and testing, but have not been able to get it to work.
It seems as though Encore is not capable of taking HDV 1080i60 footage and transcoding it for both Blu-ray and DVD. The Blu-ray looks great, but the downconverted transcode for DVD is completely unusable.
Link to screen shot of HDV to DVD transcode. (Note: this is a frame at 100%, so the "comb teeth" really are that big.)
I have seen some pretty pathetic downconversions from HDV to DV resolution, but this is the most creatively useless one I've come across so far.
I have been able to use Dynamic Link to get an almost acceptable "author once" workflow from HDV footage. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a way to get Encore or After Effects to render fields for the DVD transcode, so fast-moving graphic elements and text have jerky/strobing motion.
FYI, I got Dynamic Link working well for non-fast clips by doing the following:
Make sure that "Separate Fields" was set to "Upper" in "Interpret Footage" for the HDV clip.
Set the clip's frame blending mode to "Frame Mix" ("Pixel Motion" works, just take longer).
Enable Frame Blending for the comp.
(Enable Motion Blur for the comp if any layers are using Motion Blur).
If only there were a button to enable field rendering for the comp along with Frame Blending and Motion Blur, as both of those options directly affect how the Dynamic Link renders/transcodes in Encore.
I noticed that without Frame Blending enabled for both the clip and the comp, the motion in the transcode was very jerky, even though the clip had not been time stretched/remapped.
Does anyone know of some way to get the mythical "author once" workflow to work? Perhaps it's only for progressive workflows and not interlaced? Could this be a Mac-related problem (I have not been able to test on Windows)?
I know I can downconvert first, then import into Encore, and that does work fine, but that completely negates the wonderful concept of "author once".
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Ruud,
Gspot showed there was a problem with the file. What it said was of the 130K frames, most were not needed. I went back to the editor and reconstructed the 130K file. Had problems trying to export to M2v. PPro 2.0 would freeze every time, sometimes in a few minutes, sometimes just short of completing, approx 2 hours(this was a 2 pass vbr setup). I experienced problems just trying to make an AVI file for importing into Encore 2.0. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since I first started this journey(over 300 hours). My first shot at elation occurred when I decided to try an m2v at vbr 1 pass instead of 2 pass. It worked. I say this because of late I have successfully made an Avi file, Imported the timeline and in fact satisfactorily made an m2v file (2 pass). The m2v was also brought into Encore 2.0. Though I have 4 HD's, it seems to me that as I am moving toward a successful product, I'm finding that I've located all my assets on one HD. Is this the way to go? I'd like to thank the alert for using Gspot. And I will, always. I believe that if I had used Gspot earlier I would not have been trying to fix the problem using a bad asset.
I've been able to make an iso file, though having trouble making a playable disc.

  • FCP External Video Playback problem with HDV

Hey all. I just got the Canon HV30 HD camcorder and it is excellent. I am able to import the HDV footage to FCP no problem. I'm recording in 24p mode by the way.
I can't seem to get playback from the timeline back to the Canon so I can see the edited footage on the Camcorder's LCD screen. I've tried everything. All the settings seem to be grayed out. How am I suppose to get my edited footage from the computer back to tape? Help is much appreciated!
    Greekappi

I'm not the person at our facility that does this, but we do it all the time. However we are using the Sony HDV decks, 25U or something like that.
I have also seen the stuttering video you described, I'm not sure why it does this on some projects and not others, it is very random. When it does stutter I render out a complete self contained Quicktime and then print to tape from that. However, I occasionally still have this problem with that? But it does seem to help more often than not.

  • HDV import problems with Leopard

I recently 'upgraded' to Leopard, when I try and import HDV (From HV20) to my iMac it has become a green-tinged video. Occasionally it will have flashes of the actual colour, which lead me to believe it may be a problem with the Firewire cable I'm using. So I changed my Firewire and the same thing is happening. It worked perfectly before on Tiger. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything else I can do?
    Thanks

Yes, upgraded to Leopard and found the same problem going from my Sony A1 to 2.4ghz iMac. iMovie digitises a green & purple solarised picture when importing in HDV, but is fine when importing DV. When I try to import in Final Cut it crashes the program outright. It's obviously a bug, I can't understand why Apple aren't on to this it must be driving everyone nuts and costing pro users a lot of money. C'mon guys, you started getting posts in November 2007 about this, you need to get a fix out pronto! This is not what we move to Apple for!!

  • Video out problem with Dynex 32" 720p TV

Hi folks.  I bought my new Dynex TV a few days before New Years.  It's great, really sharp, and I've had no problems with it.  However, I do have a DVD recorder so I can record my games.  Tonight, I attempted to use the A/V output on my TV and connected them to my DVD recorder (which plugs into my computer).  I clicked "capture" and got an error telling me that a connection could not be established and that I should double check my cables.  I could hear the audio playing through my laptop speakers just fine.  I couldn't see the video, for some reason .
It's not the cables, I just took them off of my old TV to use them here.
What can I do?  Should I return my TV?

What about output from a gaming console, like a PS3? Is that only digital sources or does it matter how the PS3 is connected to the television to determine if's its a digital or analog signal?  Right now I get no output when I try to send the video of my PS3 to my composite video in on my computer's TV tuner card.

  • Problem with source tape and drop frames with capturing HDV

I am having trouble capturing a tape. Every time I try and capture I get the message problem with tape, I try to change settings but after a few seconds of capturing the capture stops. I know that the tape is fine so it does not have anything to do with my tape. Capture also stops because it comes up with a message saying drooped frames.

Are you capturing to an external or secod drive, right? What kind of drive? What camera?

  • Problem with Digital Cinema Desktop Preview on Macbook Pro

I hava a Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz with 2 GB RAM. I would like to use a connected 24"-Display for preview of my HD-Material (ProRes and HDV). Unfortunately I am not getting my Macbook Pro to playback all frames. Whend Digital Cinema Desktop Preview is activated, there are only still frames displayed. No smooth playing back neither in the canvas window nor the 24" display. I have External Video -> All Frames checked.
Does the Macbook Pro 2.2 not meet the specs for this feature?
Or is it a problem with Leopard? Is anyone with Tiger able using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview with succes?
    Regards,
    Joerg

So are you saying that the DVI output on my MacBook Pro IS true HD resolution and not a proxy like the canvas?
What I am saying is that the video feed coming out of the DVI port is YUV. Computer monitors take that YUV information and convert it to RGB for displaying purposes. So if you connect an Apple monitor to the DVI port, and then use that for Digital Cinema Preview, you are seeing a converted proxie image. The MXO takes the actual YUV footage and outputs that to the Apple display as YUV, and therefore presents full quality broadcast colors. And it does it pixel for pixel...the 23" display is 1920x1200, so there are thin black lines on the top and bottom.
AND the MXO software has a proc amp for adjusting color bars, and a BLUE ONLY option for proper monitor calibration. THis really is an amazing little box.
I'm using a Dell ultrasharp 20" that looks very good that way; I just didn't think it was HD.
It is, but it is a converted RGB image...and since it is 20", it isn't pixel for pixel (well, it would be for 720p, not 1080), and if it isn't pixel for pixel, then it is a converted image. Not suitable for color correction.
then using a DVI to HDMI cable I should be seeing HD from my Sony bravia also?
Yup...sure can. It will look pretty good too. But it being a consumer set, and again having a YUV>RGB converted image, it won't look as good as it could. The MXO would feed it a proper YUV signal, as would an Decklink HDP (but you need a decklink card with SDI out for that).
