Problem with Time Capsule and Wireless Printing (Mac+PC Mixed)

I have a time capsule that is the wireless router for the house and my iMac and laptops use the wireless network beautifully. I installed a Dell 1320C color laser printer by connecting it to the usb port on the time capsule. The airport express utility did NOT recognize any USB printer connected to the time capsule. I was however able to wireless print from my iMac by asking the printer utility to find all available printers which it did and then installing the printer drivers (thanks google). So, while i cannot find my printer as being connected to the time capsule through the airport utility, i can find it through the print utility as a connection through bonjour and i can print just fine to it.
Now i installed bonjour on my laptops and found and selected the 1320c just fine. When i try to print through the laptops (pc), nothing happens and the file stays in the print queue.
I am willing to live with the first quirk as I can print wirelessly from the iMac. I however need help to print from the laptops.
Any suggestions?
thank you so much in advance

Once I connect the printer via ethernet to the time capsule, how do I
1) see the printer on my iMAC - what utility do I run etc?
It is connected to your network. Check your printer setup manual on how to set it up. Or go the the Dell website for printer support if you can't find your manual.
2) can i then run bonjour from my windows laptops and see the printer through the network?
Via ethernet, it shouldn't need Bonjour to set up.

  • Problem with Time Capsule and wireless devices

Hi, I have a 1TB Time Capsuele 4th Gen. and it has been working since I got it, with only a few problems that were quickly resolved. However, it recently stopped allowing internet access to wireless devices. My home computer is connected on airport and actually does have internet access. However, my iPhone and MacBook, although they are recognizing the network and trying to connect, are being denied internet access. I have restarted everything multiple time, changed wireless details (network name and password) and nothing has worked. Anyone know how to fix this?

Start with a full factory reset and redo the setup again.. the full factory is important.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
No luck then it is faulty.. but it is gen3 or earlier.. all Gen4 TC were available with 2 or 3TB drives.. there is no 1TB Gen4. That makes it Gen3 and over 3 years old.

  • Migration Problems with Time Capsule and New MacBook Pro

Hopefully someone on here can help with with this problem I'm having. I just bought the new 13' MacBook Pro this week from the store and I no longer have my old MacBook Pro. I have a Time Capsule with complete backups of my old MacBook Pro and I also have the internal hard drive from it as well.
I had installed the beta version of Mountain Lion on the old MacBook Pro and the new one still has Lion.
The problem is that every time I have tried to use the Migration Assistant (and I've tried 3 times now) my files and applications are getting messed up.
iPhoto won't open. It says that it needs to be updated but when I check to update it it says that there is no update needed.
I'm seriously about to beat my head against the wall because every time I migrate the data it takes about 12 hours. I'm thinking at this point that it might be easier for me to just swap out the internal hard drives in the units because it is possibly an issue with the OS' and wait until next month to try migrating to the new drive again after Mountain Lion is officially launched.

    Bob,
I appreciate your honest and prompt response. I was VERY SPECIFIC when I told the sales rep I was hoping to use the Time Capsule with two different MacBook Pro's on different subnets (one is behind a firewall on a router, one is directly connect to a WAN side IP with no firewall) and the sales rep made a point of saying that the dual band feature would facilitate this connectivity which left me with the impression (obviously wrong) that the WiFi features of the time capsule could be used to communicate with multiple Macs regardless of their own networking configurations. (I have been configuring fairly complicated networks for 20 years and only bought my first Mac two and a half years ago; the second Mac is only six months old; the third will be bought next month.)
This isn't the end of the world for me... it does require reconfiguring my network and doing a lot of port tunneling for the box outside of the firewall in order to bring it inside as well as giving up some remote access redundancies (which were based on the ability to connect to both machines using VNC software which is port specific which means that it needed separate WAN side IP addresses).
Overall I love the Mac approach compared to the nightmare that was (is) Windows (although I do also run an Ubuntu Linux box just to keep me honest). That said, your sales reps do your products a HUGE disservice when they give glib and incorrect answer to what was, I believe in my case, a very specific and precise question.

  • Problem with time capsule and yamaha rx-v671

I am trying to access the time capsule HD from my Yamaha rx-671 tuner/amo to play music stored on the TM NAS drive. The two are connected by a CAT6 cable. Cannot get them to recognize each other.

I have very little idea of the Yamaha and what it is looking for.. you must use the Yamaha as a player for this to work.. there is utterly nothing in the TC to play media.
But the network of the TC is probably setup in a NON-SMB way.. and other than Mac's the rest of the world uses SMB.. well mostly.
Do you have nasty apostophe in the TC name as the Apple wizard does its setup to ensure nothing in the windows rest of the world can reach it.. hmmm.. that is a problem.
Rename the TC and wireless networks to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric characters.
Passwords must also conform to that.
For disk access turn on the guest account.
And set the windows workgroup correctly.. generally WORKGROUP

  • Problem with Time Capsule and an External Hard Drive.

I want to Back Up a new WD External Hard drive with Time Machine to My Time Capsule. It is formatted to FAT32, as I read here that it should be. It is excluded in the Time Machine Settings Settings and I try to delete it with the Minus Sign, but for some reason it won´t let me. I tried to add and delete a few folders from my Mac Book, and it works every time. It just won`t work with my External Hard Drive and it is not being backed up. What should I do?

    Adrain
I agree with Kenichi, MS-DOS FAT-32 is great for sharing files between windows and Mac, but even it has a single file size limit of 4GB.
    See > http://www.macworld.com/article/51972/2006/07/ww_drives.html
For the External HD to work as a Time Machine backup the drive needs to be Partitioned and Formatted as he suggests, GUID Partition Table/Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)

  • Complex Problem with Time Capsule and Network

I have setup an airport network based on a 500 gb Time Capsule which for about a year was working perfectly. Last days some problems came up. The network is shared to 2 different macbooks pro. The first macbook pro works perfectly, the internet connection is stable and fast. The other macbook works weird: Although it finds the network the internet speed is very slow and not stable. Also it can't backup on the time capsule as it used to do (msg: can't find the server). Ι have the same network settings for both the macbooks pro and I had several times restart and reset the time capsule.
    Thanks in Advance
    Costas

I suspect that you are using someone else's airport connection. That would let you access the internet, but not access your file server. go to the airport menu and make sure that you are using your airport connection.
If that does not work, does everything work well when the computer is within a few feet of the time capsule?

  • Time Capsule and Wireless Printing

Installed TC a few days ago without incident. Everything including the printer (lexmark 5300) worked as expected. The internet went down for a few minutes yesterday and I had to reboot the modem and the TC. Now the printer is no longer available to the network. I have rebooted the printer a few times without any luck. Apple TV, iPads, Iphones and Mac Books all work fine as does one PC. Ideas? Help?

It helps a lot to tell us how the printer connects.. I am guessing USB.
Open the airport utility.. the 5.6 version since you are on lion and make sure the TC is actually finding the printer. Unplug USB.. and plug it back in again.. if the TC fails to detect it, you need to use a powered hub, even though it previously worked Apple set very low current consumption for USB (maybe the power supply cannot actually handle proper USB 500ma)
If the TC has detected the printer, you might have to delete the printer in the computer and rediscover it again. Network printers via USB router can be less than 100% reliable. You would actually do better plugging it into a computer and sharing that device from there with the network.

I connected my Canon printer to time capsule, and can print OK. However, I can't get the printer scanner to work. How do you set up the scanner with Time Capsule?

You cannot use USB. It has to be a network capable printer.. is it?? You did not indicate how it is connected.. but by wireless or ethernet then scanning is possible otherwise not.

  • Backing up Mac HD with Time Capsule AND an external hard drive

I am sure that this question has been asked one way or another but I can't seem to find the exact answer.
I would like to back up my Mac HD with the Time Capsule AND another hard drive essentially to create two backups. Should one fail, I still have another copy as a precaution. The Time Capsule will be my primary back up because my external hard drive is usually switched off and will only be turned on from time to time to perform "less frequent" backups.
With Time Capsule AND the external hard drive on, will Time Machine just update the backup on the external hard drive without becoming confused with the other copy on Time Capsule? In other words, can Time Machine distinguish between two different Time Machine Backup files and bring them up to date accordingly?
I understand there is an archive function on the Time Capsule, which would also serve the purpose. However, I am wondering if there is another way.
    Thanks.

I don't think it's possible to configure Time Machine to back up to two locations without modifying its settings frequently.
You might consider using that external drive to hold a bootable backup. You can create such a thing with either of the utilities SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you pay the registration fee for SuperDuper! (~US$28), there's a mode where it will back up only what has changed, which makes the backup operation run quicker. (Carbon Copy Cloner may offer a similar feature.)

  • Problem with Time Capsule after backup session

I have a problem with Time Capsule after a backup session. Our two Macs (on Maverick) loose connection with the station and the only thing that seems to help is unplugging the Time Capsule  and starting it again! After the next backup session the same thing happens again. The Macs seem not to be able to hold on to the connection and continually loose it.  The iPhones and iPads that we have (4 units) are not affected - it is the Mac Mini and Mac Powerbook that experiences this problem!
I would be grateful for your help!
    Thor

This is standard Mac issues and has been a bug floating around since Lion.. it hits some people worse than others.. but once it starts it is awful hard to get rid of.
Just to confirm the connection to internet is not a problem?? Just the hard disk drops out?
    I recommend you
    1. Reset the TC to factory.. and start over with all new names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
TC name and wireless name/s should conform. By default the disk share name is data which is fine.
    2. Mavericks has changed over from using AFP to SMB for network filesharing.. why Apple why??
This is unhelpful to say the least. Many many people are struggling with TC and being unable to mount the network drive.
So do it manually and force it back to AFP.
In Finder use top menu, Go, Connect to Server.
Type AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress (it must be the network name of actual TC.. or its IP address)
When the computer locates the resource it will ask for a password.. it is public by default.. supply your password or public and save it in the keychain.
    3. Delete the existing TM setup and start over.. See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I cannot promise this will fix it but should reduce the problem to now and then.. rather than every time TM needs to backup.

my start up disc is full i have a macbook air, i back everuthing up with time capsule and  have movies all my music libraries and photos onto that too so as i have free space, but my max still says my startup disc is full with "other"

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Problem with Time Capsule recognizing three USB hub hard drives at one time

I attached three external drives to my Time Capsule using a USB hub, but it only wants to recognize one drive at a time. I know that all three work individually with Time Capsule and the USB hub, because when I turn off the two other drives the third appears. I can turn these on and off sequentially, and all are individually recognized, but only one at a time. Does anyone know what I would need to do to get Time Capsule to recognize all three drives running simultaneously on the network? I turned Time Capsule on and off, to see if it would then recognize the three drives, but it didn't help. Could the hub be the problem, that it is underpowered? I do have an AC adapter on it. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same issue and would love to know if you resolved it with a powered USB hub. Otherwise, i may just return to one external hard drive--though I will miss the double-backup idea. Anyone try the hub change?

  • Problem with Time Capsule password

    Hi everybody.
I have a Time Capsule and I'm trying to perform the backup of my system with Time Machine. I have replaced my old Airport Extreme base with Time Capsule and I've configured everything so that the solid green light is turned on. Now I have my Time Capsule as an Airport Base and Internet is working properly.
Once I'm opening Time Machine, it asks me what drive I want to use for backup. I choose Time Capsule and then it's asking me an username and a password.
Please, could anyone tell me what username and password I have to write? I'm trying with my administrator one but it doesn't work. I looked everywhere but I'm not able to find the right UN and PW!
    Please, help!
    Thanks
    Matteo

Matteo, you might have chosen to secure your disk with accounts rather than a password. To check this, go into the Airport Utility and double click Time Capsule on the left to enter manual setup, then click the disks icon on the top. Choose the file sharing tab and make sure "enable file sharing" is checked, then see if you have it set to "secure shared disks..." with Time Capsule password, rather than with accounts.
Be warned: if you change this setting, you will lose access to any files already on Time Capsule.
