Problems exporting PDF in CS5, text missing, images not transparent....

I am using InDesign CS5 v7.04 on a Mac running 10.8.1.
(This exact problem has happened to me in previous versions of ID as well though?)
When I export a document to PDF and view in Preview OR place into another ID document, every other page has an issue where some or all of the text is missing and images that should be transparent are not or are missing as well.  Actually, the first two pages in my current document are OK, the rest, every other page is missing text, images, has non-transparent images that should be transparent... The font I am using is Avenir and the imaages are .png created in PS. The images are in the master.
WHY is this happening? What do I need to do to fix?
Thanks in advance for your assistance. I am a mostly self-taught ID user since version 1, just getting back into using it after a long break.

OK, sorry, yes, it looks the same in Acrobat as it does in Preview as it does when placed into ID.
I was able to save as a non-current version of PDF (Acrobat 4) and it shows correctly. (???) What am I missing, here? I mean, I have a work around, but?
So the original PDF is bad, rather than there being a problem with the file after placing. That implicates the original document, and since Acrobat 4 compatibility works it's probably either a transparency or layer issue.
Try trashin g your prefs and export again and see if it works. See Replace Your Preferences

we have a mac laptop and dont have any problems with pdf files but our imac will not open them.  any suggestions?

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

having problems converting pdf to word. I'm not able to convert the file, what do I need to do?

    Hi prates77,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble converting files. Are you receiving the conversion error regardless of the file that you try to convert? Does the error occur whether you use the web interface, or convert via Reader? And an odd question: how many files do you have stored in your Acrobat.com account? We have seen reports of this error when there are a large number of files stored in the root folder of your Acrobat.com account.
I look forward to hearing back from you.

The e-mail address is correct and I've consulted the inbox and the  trashbox without result. And I don't know how to contact the seller Adobe...

    Hi Jose,
After checking your account, I see that you purchased an ExportPDF subscription back in June (under the same email address that you use here in the forums). There are no other subscriptions under that email address.
But, you should be able to log in to https://cloud.acrobat.com using this email address and your password. If not, please let us know.

  • Colour change in identically exported PDFs: InDesign CS5 to CS6

Artwork turns out with a greener hue in a PDF Print document exported using InDesign CS6 trial software that has ruined a whole print run.
This catalogue has been printed in past years using CS4 and CS5 software, each time the colours in the exported PDF proof, PDF Print file and InDesign files being accurate and matching perfectly.
This time I used a trial of InDesign CS6 - Importing the same mother file as previous years and working on the document. When exporting the document however, despite using identical settings to export PDF files in the past, the exported PDFs turn out with a greener hue than the previous CS5 PDFs. I trialed a few different kinds of colour conversions in the PDF export window (i.e. 'no conversion' to 'convert to destination - RGB') just to see what happened -  and all turned out with the same result. The colour change is small but this was exxaggerated at print and as a result the colours
looked drastically different from the catalogue the year before. Printing aside, (as it's a whole other ballgame), it came down to this slight PDF colour change.
I'm wondering if anyone can help explain this - does CS6 handle colour exporting differently to CS5?

    Hi Eugene,
Looking up the settings, they say the following:
InDesign CS5: Unsynchronised "settings are not synchronised for consistent colour"  (odd; CS5 version is where the file exported with accurate colours)
InDesign CS6: Synchronised "using the same colour settings for consistent colour management"   (CS6 version exported with a colour change)
Another thing I've realised that might be an issue:
The product images are still in RGB format (supplied by the photographer), where everything else in the artwork is in CMYK format. I've run a test export where I've converted everything to CMYK and exported it to a PDF.
    The results:
InDesign CS5: Same colours consistently on both PDFs with RGB images and with all CMYK images.
InDesign CS6: Green hue across PDF with RGB images in it, Correct colours in PDF with all CMYK images.
So is this where the problem lies? The CS6 software having Synchronised colour settings shows a colour change when RGB photos are exported to PDF?
    Let me know your thoughts...

  • Optimizing PDF hiding some text in image

    Hi all,
When I optimize the PDF with check on  the "Transparency" option, it hides all the math sign from the text of images.
    For example '+2.5' becomes " 2.5".
Please help to let me know why it is happening and and how to avoid this.

    YES! A SOLUTION!
Thanks to an Adobe user who goes by "Test Screen Name" for this solution!
DO NOT print to PDF from InDesign to create a PDF. Instead, use the Export function.
I followed that advice, and it solved the problem. Hope this helps you, JuleeBruce!

  • Export pdf with completely flattened linked images/tables

    Hello
I am trying to export my thesis as pdf so that the illustrator images which are linked in, are flattened including their text labels.
This document needs to be submitted to examiners who want to scan the word-count of the body text, not the images/tables.
I have looked at other discussions but suggestions have not worked, I can still select the text of embedded images/tables in Preview and Acrobat.
Please can I have some suggestions
    Thanks

Here is one way, You will need to open each Illustrator file, duplicate the original layer and call it "Outlined type". Go to select> Objects> Text objects, then Type> Create outlines. (outlined type won't be recognized as words, unless you ask it to try).
Open your InDesign file, select each linked Illustrator file and go to Object> Object Layer Options, turn on the outlined type layer and turn off the original layer. Keep the original Illustrator layer, in case you need to make future edits.

  • Printing a PDF document to virtual PDF printer converts text to image in output PDF-file

When I "print" any regular PDF document to a PDF virtual printer, it always converts a source regular (textual) PDF document into an image only document. It applies even to pure plain text documents (say, HTML source code etc.)
(I often need to create a PDF document from the existing PDF. Yes, I know, it might seems quite pointless, but actually it makes sense.)
    Thus I have 2 questions:
    1) Is such sonvertion normal or I do anything wrong myself?
    2) It is by design, is there any woraround to prevent conveting text to image?
    Many thanks in advance!

Have you checked to see if the "Print As Image" option is inadvertently checked? In the Print dialog, click the Advanced button then look for the checkbox.

  • Working with Exported PDF in Word - text jumps around

I just purchased an Adobe Export PDF subscription and am having trouble working with the document once it has been exported to Word.  The cursor jumps from place to place, as do words.

Try selecting the text you want to change within Word, then choosing a different font for that text.  I've seen this really help with the text-jumpy issue that occurs from time to time in files converted with ExportPDF. The underlying cause is usually a poorly or incorrectly embedded font in the original PDF.

  • Best Way to Export PDF for Press w/ Grayscale Images

Hi, we've been trying to move to a PDF based workflow for sending files to printers if possible so that all color conversion can take place at the final step of creating the PDF. This way, all images can remain RGB in their native color space.
But I just had to create a PDF that had a mix of images in it. Some were typical RGB, some had already been converted to CMYK (probably US SWOP), and some were true grayscale images.
When I created the PDF, I set it to convert all colors to the destination profile, which in this case was just US SWOP because the printer didn't have a more specific profile to suggest (most don't). It appears that the images converted properly, but the the grayscale images are using just the K channel (which I suppose is to be expected).
A while back we printed a fully grayscale piece where all images were converted to a specially created SWOP profile that had modified GCR curves to have most of the data still represented by the black channel, but with some nice CMY thrown in as the tones deepened. The result was amazing. The images had no color cast, but were a nice rich grayscale. The printer was very impressed as well.
    A) So what would be the best workflow to incorporate mixed color images, and still have the grayscale images turn out nice & rich? Do I have to convert all images manually first (trying to avoid having to do this)?
    B) If the printer doesn't offer a profile, and probably doesn't fully understand or utilize color management, are we best to supply the PDF file converted to US Web Coated SWOP because that is what THEY would be most used to getting? This job, however, will be sheet-fed on a matte paper with a satin AQ.
THANKS! Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Trying to refine our workflow here.

I would love to learn more about how to choose an InDesign working color space when you don't know the end printer (or if the end printer is clueless); how to deal with Illustrator native files that will be placed in InDesign (RGB? CMYK? Embedded profile?); how to deal with pre-existing elements that may be in the wrong CMYK color space; and possibly the option of taking color management into your own hands if the printers aren't knowledgeable; etc.
If the printer cannot provide an ICC, maybe they can state what print standard they use (GRACoL, SWOP). If you know that and the paper type, use your best judgement in selecting an ICC. Look to the IDEAlliance website, there are 2 SWOP profiles and one GRACoL profile that are good to use for coated stocks.
As far as mixing existing CMYK with RGB, opinions may be varied. Let's say you have a job, moving to Coated GRACoL 2006. You place RGB images, US Web Coated SWOP v2 CMYK images, US Web Coated SWOP v2 Illustrator, and custom GCR CMYK rich black images.
When these are placed into the GRACoL InDesign document, the default behavior is to preserve CMYK numbers. The GRACoL CMYK is assigned to all of the placed CMYK content.
Now you output a PDF with the settings you described earlier. PDF/X-4, Convert to Destination, Document CMYK (GRACoL). Even though you had US Web and GCR originally, in the PDF it is all Device CMYK (when output from ID CS4). Furthermore any user must assume that all CMYK is GRACoL, because that is the Output Intent. Also, if the GRACoL is a decent representation of the print condition, you can soft proof everything accurately in Acrobat (and InDesign for that matter).
If this PDF gets handed off to the printer, his duty is to RIP the CMYK and preserve numbers. The only number shifts will occur at the plating stage via plate calibration curves, which is not an ICC conversion.
If a CMYK - CMYK conversion is necessary, the printer must get you on the phone and let you know that he is re-converting all your CMYK content. For him to do that without informing you is, well, nuts. You've already done the conversion yourself. Every conversion is (technically) damaging,
Now assume that you output PDF/X-4 with no conversion. In that case, you have RGB and CMYK coexisting in the PDF output. Again, all CMYK should pass through the print RIP with numbers preserved. All RGB would be converted to the Output Intent already present in your PDF. If there is something wrong with that Output Intent, it's the printer's duty to get you on the phone and let you know. I say that because you, as a designer, have already soft proofed everything in the job in the GRACoL color space. If the printer wants to switch horses mid stream, he's got to let you know. (Side note – a printer taking a ownership of a special CMYK - CMYK conversion is highly unlikely. If they had a shop CMYK, they would have given it to you in the first place).
In summary – it is the print industry standard to preserve incoming CMYK numbers. If a client gives me a job full of US Web Coated SWOP v2, I can't very well treat that the same as incoming RGB and start converting to a different CMYK. CMYK is already cooked. If you re-cook it it stands to get burned. The only time CMYK-CMYK is warranted is (a) when Total Ink Limit is a factor (uncoated) or (b) the color is so far off on the proof that re-cooking only stands to help it.
What I WILL do is tell the client that they may get a better print result if they either supply RGB with no predetermined CMYK destination (I convert to press CMYK), or they use a different CMYK that more accurately describes the print condition.

  • Text and images not displaying, but some are

I've uploaded my site, and images and text are missing. 4 pages are great, but the individual property pages are half empty (missing images, icons and text) Its a school project, so, yikes!    www.icm-mp3.net/group17/
    thank you in advance

I should clarify, it all worked fine on my own server. Now, on the schools site, its missing photos going across horizontally, the lightbox that goes with, a text box, an image embedded with links. The remaining elements are in their places. Could this be a server issue?
And, clever me, it is due tomorrow.

  • Problem in formatting of long text -- line break not recognized.

    Hi ,
We have a PO smartform in our SRM system and we are facing problem with formatting of long text on the smartform for long texts maintained for the PO.
for ex, we maintain the long text as --
"this is long text for item 1.
    1. this is line 1.
    2. this is line 2."
On the smartform it is displayed as --
this is long text for item 1. 1. this is line 1. 2. this is line 2.
So basically, the line breaks in the text are not considered in the smartform .
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue ??
    Thanks.

    Hello Harmeet,
Which Std. FM are you using to fetch the PO texts? If the PO doesn't exist in your system, i'm afraid you cannot use Include Texts as mentioned by Harsh.
As an alternative you'll have to create a table & pass the text lines to it! I don't think SmartForms are not smart enough to identify new-line character.

  • PDF created with text as image instead of text

    Acro Pro 9.3.2 on Win 7 Pro 64-bit using OpenOffice.org 3.2.0, Impress.
When I create a PDF from a presentation document using the referenced, the text is rendered as an image (which I don't want). I've gone through the settings several times and can't find something which is probably painfully obvious. Oddly enough, if I use OpenOffice.org's Export as PDF feature, the PDF comes through exactly as I'd expect it to, with the text generated as text.
Would anyone know what setting(s) I've overlooked so I can change the behavior in Acro Pro? Thanks.

Bill, thank you for putting so much time into this. As you can see from my other responses, the problem may well be limited just to the one doc in question so it's not worth any more of anyone's time. If nothing else, I feel less embarrassed knowing I (apparently) didn't overlook something obvious. I probably shouldn't write that, should I?
In case it's of interest, I tried unchecking the "rely on sys fonts only" option and that didn't change anything.
OO 3.2 is a significantly better product than 2.4 btw. I realize you didn't say anything negative about it. I just wanted to drop that in.
Again, thank you for working on this.
