Problems installing Windows 7 using Boot Camp

I have a brand new MBP Retina laptop (late 2013) with 256GB SSD. Today I tried to use Bootcamp Assistant to partition the SSD and install Windows 7 64 bit OS.
My first attempt was using a licensed Windows 7 64 bit installation DVD and my OWC external optical drive which is recognized in Finder:
I started Boot Camp Assistant, selected the boxes to download latest Windows Support Software from Apple and to Install Windows 7. I was asked to specify the size for the Windows partition and hit continue. The process was moving along, the  computer restarted and then I got a black screen with a blinking white cursor (like a command line prompt) in the upper left corner of the screen and a message to press any key to reboot. Pressing any key did nothing.
As far as I could tell, the Support Software files that were on the USB drive did get installed prior to the first reboot of the system that happens after you allocate the size for the partition. After the first reboot I never got the Windows installer though, just the hanging black screen/cursor mentioned above.
I'm wondering if, after creating the partition and restarting, my computer can't see my external optical drive even though it does show up in Finder when booted to OSX because it was not reading the Win7 Install DVD at all.
While on the phone with Apple Senior Tech Support we rebooted several times holding down the Alt/Option key. The boot options were the OSX, Recovery, Windows, and EFI Boot. Choosing Windows resulted in the trackpad locking up and it just hung there. I ended up reverting the SSD back to a single partition for now.
After some discussion on the Apple forum I tried creating an ISO file from the Win7 64 bit DVD using ImgBurn software that I have installed on my Windows PC  and ImgBurn indicated it had created a bootable ISO file. I copied the ISO file to the downloads folder on the MBP, plugged the empty USB drive into the MBP and tried Boot Camp Assistant again:
Choosing the appropriate option for use with an ISO file on a USB drive Boot Camp Assistant proceed to again create the partition, asked me to size it, and then it proceeded (over approximately an hour and a half) to work on copying the ISO file to the USB drive and downloaded the Support Software to the USB drive.
After the restart I got another black screen, cursor, and the messages, "No bootable device/drive found", "Press any key to reboot". Again pressing any key did not do anything. I reverted back to a single partition again, rebooted to OSX and gave up for the night.
Bottom line in either scenario is that I never get to the Windows installer screens to even attempt to install Windows on the new partition.
QUESTIONS:
I think in my situation it doesn't appear that ImgBurn created a bootable ISO file from my Win7 install DVD. The Apple Bootcamp Setup guide refers to downloading the ISO image from Microsoft but I couldn't find anything that I would be comfortable downloading.
I'd rather use my installation DVD for Windows but why isn't that process of reading the DVD from the external drive working after the restart?
Can the ISO file and Windows Support Software live on the same USB drive during installation and does the support software get installed automatically by boot camp assistant?
What am I doing wrong here? This shouldn't be this hard especially when I own a valid copy of Windows.
This is VERY frustrating. Any help or referrals to proper instruction is very much appreciated.

I was able to successfully complete the installation of Windows 7 Home Premium using Boot Camp. Turns out the problem was the Windows 7 ISO image I was initially trying to use. I called Microsoft tech support and they sent me a link (see below) from which I downloaded the Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO image. After downloading the ISO image and restarting Boot Camp Assistant the process of Boot Camp preparing and transferring the ISO image and Windows Support software to the USB drive took about 45 minutes and then everything went smoothly from there. The only thing I encountered was when I was asked what drive to install Windows on I got a message that it couldn't install on the Boot Camp drive because it needed to be in NTFS format. I clicked on the format button and then the process continued. After Windows installed the Windows Support Software from Apple started to install automatically. So far it is working well.

    There is no Lion DVD. Start Boot Camp Assistant and select the menu item to download the Windows Support Software.

    If it is OSX Snow Leopard Installation DVD then yes this disc contains the BootCamp Drivers version 3.x and is needed after the installation of Windows to install the BootCamp Drivers.
    With OSX Lion BootCamp is at version 4.x and the BootCamp Drivers have to be downloaded during use of the BootCamp Assistant in OSX.

However, being the overeager moron that I am, I did so without ensuring that I have a Snow Leopard CD. So now I am stuck in Windows. Anybody got any solutions for a dumb man?

    you are not stuck.
    the default OS is set to the Windows volume
    hold down x on startup
    or hold down option key after the chime sound and wait for the startup selector
    when you get to OS X then go to Startup Disk control in system preferences

    The restart in Mac OS X icon (a grey diamond) will only appear after you've installed the Boot Camp drivers. If you installed the drivers, try clicking on the sideways triangle to show any hidden system tray icons.  You can also use the boot camp control panel to restart in Mac OS X.
    For how many partitions you have, you should be able to see those in the Disk Utility application in Mac OS X or the Disk Management app in Windows.  Be careful not to delete any of them.  If you want to remove a partition, I'd use the Boot Camp Utility to do that.  Nore as well that OS X 10.7 and above add a hidden recovery partition to your drive that you won't see in Disk Utility but will see in the Windows app.

    i am having this strange issue with boot camp. i have my windows 7 install dvd and go through all the standard boot camp procedure's, but once its finished partitioning the disk and restarts it just opens up to the apple logo on a grey screen, no spining logo, no status bar, nothing! ive left it for 6 hours on this screen 2-3 times now and nothing is happening. when i turn off and on again it just goes to a black screen telling me to install a bootable device and press any key. BUT THE INSTAL DISC IS IN!!! its driving me insane!
    windows was burned to a dvd using disc aid and the .iso copied over fine and was verified and everything. the machine im trying to get this to run on is a 15 mbp 2.66 i7. the optical drive has been replaced with a 120gb ssd and there is a 1tb internal sitting in the hdd bay. i dont know if that has any relavance to this issue? i boot osx 10.7 (mountain lion) off the ssd and am trying to boot camp my hdd, but that couldent cause issues could it?
    ive had a look around the other disscussions and fourums for 4 days now and i think i have seen nearly every bootcamp related youtube video there is! AND IT STILL DOSENT WORK!
    if any one has ANY idea or sugesstion on how i can rectify this issue it would be greatly appriceated.

    A boot drive requires (all data off first) it to be formatted GUID and OSX Extended Journaled, then OS X installed, then option key at boot to select that HD OS X boot drive, then BootCamp proceedure ran and install into the partition it creates on the HD."
    THANKS AGAIN, i think im getting closer to a solution, i really dident think that simple old bootcamp could become so complicated!.
    so i couldent (boot off the ssd as normal) and then create a seperate partition on the hdd of about 30gb, install osx on it, boot from that (with the optical bay back inside), create a thrid partition on the hdd via bootcamp then instal windows?
    its just that erasing and reformating the hdd sounds a bit scary, its taken months of getting the permissions and fixing rouge ubd processes all right so everything works perfectly and seamlessly together with the ssd+hdd combo
    "You can replace the data back into OS X on the HD and use that as extra storage, but your main use OS X user(s) needs to remain on the boot SSD.
    To do this you need to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the OS X boot partition of the SSD to the blank/empty of data HD, this will copy all the Users accounts accuratly so you can access them from the SSD.
    As you can see here, I can access the same user folders of my cloned partition from the original partition, no "-" minus signs on the folders as I'm the exact same user.
    I am currently booted into Macintosh HD and accessing my same named user folder on the clone on Macintosh HD 2.
    So basically OS X on HD will become your new "Storage Drive"
    this is pretty much exactly how im set up at the moment! with the user account and applications on the SSD and libarys like iphoto, itunes etc are on the HDD and i symlinked some others like the downloads off to the hdd aswell.

After steps necessary for create a new partition with the BootCamp, I rebooted the machine with the "Windows 7 Professional installation DVD" in DVD device, but then the setup Windows installation does not appears, showing the initialization white screen of the Mac OS with the apple image, a symbol of emptiness and a folder with a "?" symbol within alternating infinitely and do not finish.
    I tried with the Windows Ultimate Vista x86, but occurs the same.
    Please, what can I do to install the Windows in my Macbook Air?

    No, I did not get a solve. Actually, my problem worsened. I tried it again, but this time the computer wouldn´t detect my alu keyboard, hence I couldn´t select a drive to tell the bloody thing where to boot from. That is weird, because at the time I opened this thread it did work. I actually had to borrow a wired keyboard so I could hit alt and get it to work.
    At the moment I am not so keen on trying it again......

    This happens right away after clicking to install now(see picture). The window takes me to where it has to find a cd/dvd drive and it can not find any. I can't advance further into the installation because of this. Anyone got any clues as to how I can fix this?

    This happens when Win7 doesn't seem to have the right hard disk controller driver for your setup.
    Might be that you somehow got a bad burn in (which can happen on occasion) or that the disc is damaged or dirty.
    What I've also seen happen, is that Windows sometimes gets taken aback for no reason at all, in which case starting over might help.
    If your Mac requires another storage point for the drivers, you can use a USB flash stick as the driver source.

    Note that nowhere in the Boot Camp instructions does it tell you to use Disk Utility to format the Windows partition. The Boot Camp Assistant program creates the partition & sets the +partition scheme info+ of the disk as appropriate for the Windows installer but the Windows installer itself is responsible for formatting the new partition with the appropriate +file system scheme+ (NTFS for Windows 7).
    If you follow the instructions in the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide to the letter you should have no problems installing Windows.

    If you are only going to use one or two window only programs then I wouldn't waste the space.  Try WinonX it allows you to install exe. Files on Mac without installing windows.

    No, OSX will be read only (from Windows) and vice versa. (you can install 3rd party utilities on either or both partitions, to make read/write possible)

    Go to the Windows Control Panel and select Boot Camp applet. In that applet there is a Boot Drive option. Select Mac OS X.
    Or restart the system and hold down the Option key for a few second. A Boot Menu screen will come up. Select Macintosh HD.
    Once in OS X go to the Sys Prefences, Startup Disk and select Macintosh HD Mt Lion 10.8.2 and click Restart then Restart again. the system will now restart in Mac OS X.
    To boot back to Windows do the same, Startup Disk, and select Windows then Restart and Restart again.

    Additional information from Linc's post. Basically, only one additional partition can be added to a Fusion Drive and it resides on the HDD.

    Is there any way round this without re-partitioning my drive?

  • Weird problem trying to install XP using Boot Camp 3.0.1

    Hi everyone, first post here.
    I have been trying to install XP in my Mac Pro using Boot Camp and a very strange thing happened. I created the partition allright, I inserted my Windows XP cd, hit install, the computer restarted and that´s when it froze. What actually happened is that it got to the gray screen stage, the apple appeared on screen, and then the apple symbol started to shuffle between a "forbidden" symbol and an icon of a folder with a question mark on it.
    I rebooted, and held alt key. It found the mac hd (from which it boots just fine if I selected) and my windows cd. If I select the windows cd, I get again the apple symbol and after some time it´s start to shuffle again between the three icons. I have tried to delete the partition, re-did all the steps and every time happens the exact same thing.
    I have looked through many threads reporting problems with boot camp, but I haven´t found one that describes this specific problem. If there is such, please point me to it. Otherwise, anyone has any ideas?
