Problems with airtunes

i use my macbook pro to stream music via my airport express, which is connected to my stereo via a standard audio cable. when i do this, the sound comes out of only one speaker, and very faint out of the other speaker. nothing is wrong with my receiver or my speakers, when i connect using the same cables directly to my mac (rather than to the airport express unit), the sound comes out of both speakers. any idea what could be causing this?

Nicholas, the original poster probably does not appreciate you jumping in on his question. Nonetheless, (in an attempt to save some time for Tesserax), we already verified that your internet connection was working correctly and the issue was with the Direct TV DVR. Did you contact Direct TV support as requested?
If yes, what did they suggest so that we don't ask you to repeat things that you have already done?
If you read some of the posts on the Direct TV forum, you have probably already noticed that there are two schools of thought about troubleshooting an internet connection.
One school recommends nothing connected to the ethernet port and then a red button reset, which will take 5-10 minutes for service to come back. Then attempt the connection.
The other school recommends that the ethernet connection be made and then a red button reset be made, again with 5-10 minutes to be allowed for service to be restored. Then try to connect.
I already mentioned that it was likely that the DVR is looking for a connection with a minimum bandwidth requirement of xxx amount in order to establish a connection. Since you are attempting to connect via wireless through Internet sharing on your laptop to the ethernet port, I started my response to your question with a statement that this would be "iffy". My opinion on this was based on experience. You may recall that I also mentioned that I had tried this in the past with a very good wireless connection and the results were not very encouraging. At best, things were all very, very slow. No doubt some of this is due to the Internet sharing which you are attempting to use.
Tesserax may have some additional comments here if he chooses to respond. If he does, we'll both be fortunate to hear from the top expert on the forums.

  • Problem with Airtunes - it keeps pausing?

I'm working in an office where 3 other macs use AirTunes with no problem at all. But when I play from my MacBook the tunes keep pausing. It starts off ok, but soon stops for a second or two and then resumes as if itunes was Pausing.
This Pausing or brake in the connection is really annoying, has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way around it?
Any advise is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I use both the newest generations of AirPort Extreme as main station and AirPort express for music streaming to my Hi-Fi speakers and I experience the same problem. I frequently had this issue over the years with different configurations of hard- and software.
I believe it is about the frequencies. I live in a flat in the city centre and here are many WiFi networks in the air. Normally I set up my Network to choose the frequencies automatically and everything works fine. But when I have this music-cutting-problem, which is often combined with reduced overall network performance, I change the setting to manual and try the frequencies one after another. When you find a free frequency, no other network is using, everything should work as planned.

  • ITunes with Airtunes Problems

    I have a problem with iTunes/Airtunes,
I am using iTunes to access my music collection, which i consider fairly large ( approx 80Gb)
Every now and then itunes will ramdomly either skip a song half way through or it will not cross-fade its tunes. Even though the cross-fade feature is active.
I have tried reinstalling OSX and this made no difference, I have also tried resetting my airport settings ( as i play music through Airport Express) Although iTunes does this even when playing through my powerbooks speakers.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this problem is really annoying! I like iTunes and wouuld like to contunue using it but if it has bugs in it then will have fo find a new Music Player.
    help?!?!?!

I have had the same experience. I am using itunes on windows xp. I have the Airport Express configured as a client and am using a Linksys as my base station.

  • Airtunes having problems with multiples speakers

Airtunes works very well when I just have the music play through the remote speakers. But when I try to get it to play music through both my computer's speakers and the remote speakers at the same time, I get a message saying
"An error occured while connecting to the remote speaker 'Bedroom.' An unknown error occured (-3256)."
Then the music starts playing through my computer speakers but not the remote speakers.
    Any thoughts?

Never mind, I found an article in the Apple support articles telling me how to solve this issue. It was a problem with my firewall settings.

  • AirTunes problems with 10.5.2

    Hello,
after updating from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 this week I got the problem that AirTunes doesn't work anymore.
My Aiport Express is connected to a WLAN (WPA/WPA2). Under 10.5.1 everything worked well (except the known annoyance that AirTunes doesn't work with FrontRow anymore, but ok...) But under 10.5.2 I have to reboot both my wireless routers and to restart my MacBook Pro to be able to use AirTunes. After waking up from sleeping modus or rebooting the MacBook Pro, Airtunes doesnt work, even though my speakers are displayed in Itunes. The WLAN router the AirPort Express is connected to shows that they are connected correctly. AirTunes tries to connect to the speakers, but it doesn't work, so it still displays "computer" in Itunes. Still I can choose my AirPort speakers, they are still displayed, but no connection possible. AirTunes network requires no password, I reinstalled both WLAN routers, green light on my Airport Express is on, I can ping the Airport Express, but Airtunes doesn't work and requires a fully reboot of all systems.
Using a MacBook (10.4.10) in the same WLAN everything works well.
Is there anybody facing the same problems or having an idea how to solve this problem (except downgrading to 10.5.1...)?
    Thanks

Today I spent considerable time trying to track down my Airtunes problem. I disconnected and did a hard reset on my Airport Express and Airport Extreme. Rebooted my computer and tried a new Airport Express.
Most mysteriously I tried streaming to Airtunes using a G4 laptop that still has Tiger on it. I cannot use Airtunes on that either. But.... before the upgrade to 10.5.2 I could use Airtunes. This tells me it's a network problem that 10.5.2 made a change to.
Next I tried Airtunes to my Apple TV - worked fine. So Airtunes is sending the music, but the Airport Expresses are not outputting it to the speakers.
Lastly, I tried Airfoil. Same problem. It says it's connecting to my remote speakers, all appears well, but no sound. The green lights are on, the music is advancing in iTunes, and if I try to connect to computers to the remote speaker, it indicates it's already in use by another connection.
I'm at the end of my non-techie computer rope. I hope we have an answer soon. I miss my Airtunes!!

  • Help, itunes doesn't want to work with airtunes and my airport express!

Strangely specific problem with playing itunes using airtunes. Just connected an Airport express to my time capsule. All the software and firmware is up to date, and I'm streaming from itunes to an airport express connected to a stereo. My itunes is on a laptop. My library is on the time capsule. Almost everytime the song changes, the audio drops out and stays out until I pause and replay the song. It's the weirdest thing. There are no random audio drops, just a failure to keep playing when the song switches (and it doesn't happen every time, just some of the time). This is similar but not the same as the problems other folks are having with airport express and itunes audio drop outs. Does anyone have a solution?
    rabbit

Problem solved. Upgrading to most recent itunes relased yesterday seems to have fixed the problem.

  • ITunes 7.4.1 error -3256 with airtunes -- doesn't anyone test this stuff?

I have problems with iTunes 7.4.1 and my Airport Express. Using iTunes to send Airtunes music runs for a bit, then hangs up. I also get error -3256 when trying to run both Airtunes and computer speaker. Isn't anyone testing this stuff before its shipped?

This isn't too helpful, but I'm not having this problem, so one piece of the puzzle is that it's not a consistent problem.

  • Airport Express B/G : problems with manual IP configuration?

I don't know when it started, but I think it has something to do with one of te latest systemupdates or airport firmware updates.
    Configuration :
    - Airport Express N : only N, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.7), roaming with Extreme N
    - Airport Extreme N : only N, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.35), roaming with Express N
    - Airport Express B/G (older one) : B/G compatible, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.8), no roaming, just stand alone.
All the airports are wired connected to a 10/100 switch.
No internet configuration on these airports, I'm using a separated router, also connected to the switch.
Problem : The airport Express B/G dissapears from the network : from time to time not visible in the airport utility program, from time to time not visible in iTunes (airtunes). In spite of these problems, he is always visible in the airport network menu. An IP ping works just fine.
When I change the IP configuration of the Airport Extreme B/G from manual to DHCP, there is NO problem anymore.
No problems with the Airport Express N an Airport Extreme N.
Are there other users with the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.

question: i below what should i do ?
    1) put a cable from my cablemodem to the airport extreme bs;
    2) put a cable the airport extreme bs to the airport express bs.
Yes on both. Your network configuration would look something like the following:
    Modem > (Ethernet) > \[WAN port] AEBSn \[LAN port] > (Ethernet) > AX
do i have to reset the modems and are there any setting i should be aware of ?
Yes, it's always a good idea to both reset both base stations and, after doing so and before configuring them, perform a complete power recycle of your network equipment.
    So in this case ...
o Power-down the modem, AEBSn, AX, & computers. (Order is not critical.)
o Reset both the AEBSn & AX. (Again, order is not critical.)
o Power-down each base station after performing a successful reset.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 10 minutes.
o Plug-in the AX; wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-up your computer(s).
o Use the AirPort Utility to reconfigure both base stations as required.

  • Airport Express problems with new MAC MINI and DLINK router SOLVED

Hi just thought I would post this as it may well help others experiencing similar frustrations with new core duo mac mini and wireless connection or quality problems across the network / internet etc
I have a 3 week old, new mac mini core duo 1.8ghz 2gig ram, 120gb disk - First Mac, connecting to my exisiting wireless network via DLINK ADSL Router 2MB Broadband also one windows laptop and pc also wireless on the network and two airport express potins to stream itunes to
    Problem was briefly
Mac worked fine, but the network connection just far too slow, laptop and pc, 1800+ kbps downstream mac mini 90 - 150kbps (http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp)
also if i ping the router directly from terminal (ping -c 20 192.168.1.1) average response 12+ ms with 20% packet loss, yet laptop and pc avg 2ms no losses
Spent 2 evenings on frustrating calls of more than 1 hour each (due to being cut off , then ring back and closed etc etc) and carrying out a the helpdesk troubleshooting (I am an IT consultant I think I am above this level), eventually an archive and install of the os as well
last night I call for the third time, insisting I dont wish to carry out any further troubleshooting, and want it replaced and resolved or my money back
I receive a call back from product specialist (not sure if thats mac mini specialist or airport) but we resolved the issue (his knowledge far superior to the help desk do this do this attitude)
between us we carried out the folowing and resolved the problem and I am now very happy
mac now downstreaming also in excess of 1800kbps (as expected for 2mb broadband)and no packet loss
This problem was resolved by switching off the turbo option hidden away in the routers settings, under wireless configuration
Supposed to improve performance, but its rubbish and will make hardly any difference under mac os to the speed but will certainly affect your mac mini performance(you may have a similar setting switched on in your routers and mac os dont like it)
We stumbled across this by first disconnecting one of the airport express devices from my dlink network, and using it on its own default apple wireless settings, effectively making it a standalone wireless network, and not via the dlink router
we then carried out the same ping with the ip address of this device (from airport admin utility default 10.0.1.1) and the results were fantastic 2ms avg no package loss
this established it was something with the router, and how we then interrogated the routers settings and found the turbo on option within wireless configuration
you may not be able to replicate this if you dont have an additional network you could join (such as airport express), but probably worth checking your own router settings for something similar
Hope that may be of assistance to others, sorry that its a bit long winded and garbled, but I'm just so excited to finally get my new mac working as i would expect it to
Also perhaps insist on speaking to a product specialist immediately that the helpdesk are unable to help you

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Printing problems with 5.4.2 update

Airport Utility 5.4.2 screwed up my Airport Express settings
I was able to print wirelessly prior to this update and then I installed 5.4.2
Now I can't print wirelessly, Airport can detect my printer but it disconnects once I start printing
I'm using an HP PSC 1410 printer. My Airport Express is the 802.11g with AirTunes.
I have tried reconfiguring my AE through Airport Utility but to no avail.
    Any workaround for this problem?

I too have experienced a similar problem.
I have a Lexmark X4875 Wireless Printer which is connected to the network created by Timecapsule.
This setup has worked flawlessly for about 6 months but in the last 2/3 days when I try to print a document the printer icon appears in the dock and the document goes to print then after about 30 seconds I get a message something like 'problem communicating with the printer ........'
The only way I seem to be able to get it to work again is to delete the printer then add it again. All seems well for a while then the same problem reoccurs. I have not yet been able to determine if there is a trigger.
I also applied the recent Apple Software Update and wonder if this has had a negative effect.
My Windows based laptop continues to print fine wirelessly.
If I find a solution I will post here.
    Thanks.

  • Intermittent Audio Drop-offs with Airtunes to Apple TV

A number of other threads have similar problems. iMac 2.8 GHz iTunes 8.1 is connect to an updated ATV via new dual-channel ABS on the "n" band. Still there are audio drop offs with AirTunes as it did with the previous ABS Extreme n and previous version of iTunes. So much so, I just gave up and used the Apple Remote on the iPhone to play ATV. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Switching from WEP to WPA/WPA2 personal seems to have totally cured the dropouts for me.
Also I used an old flying saucer Airport as the receiver via ethernet out for my entreatment center instead of using the AppleTV's wireless.
Also I had a Panasonic security cam that didn't support WPA so I used another flying saucer Airport via ethernet out as its receiver.
    So now my setup is,
Airport Extreme in my home office as my main base station with a Motorola ADSL 2200 router feeding it internet.
Flying saucer Airport via ethernet and a hub feeding my AppleTV, DirecTV DVR, and a Mac mini.
Another flying saucer Airport via ethernet feeding my Panasonic security cam.
Airport Express for my bedroom speakers.
All airports are in bridge mode with the Motorola 2200 DSL modem acting as my router. (this seems to be the only way my Vonage adapter recovers without having to be reset if my DSL goes down)
I steam music from my 17" Macbook Pro to the AppleTV and Bedroom speakers all day now without any dropouts.

  • Trouble with AirTunes - conflicting channel noise?

    Hi there
I have just bought an Airport Express with AirTunes. The device works great - but thus far I have only been able to successfully play music on the network it creates - I haven't been able to use WDS or get it to join a network and still stream music without there being constant pauses in playback through AirTunes. I thought this might be down to there being three WLANs in the close area which are operating on the higher end of the channel spectrum. I was able to change the channel on one of these WLANs so it now operates on channel 4, but there are two WLANs which have the same signal strength still operating on channel 11,12 or 13. The thing is when monitoring in Kismac, they seem to hop between channels quite quickly. I thought this might be because they are trying to avoid noise: but they seem to hop at the same time. When one jumps ship to channel 11 from channel 10, the other seems to.
What I'm asking is, does anyone have any experience of pauses/delays/gaps in AirTunes playback and could this be the problem?
I'm also trying to get the Express to act as a repeater, but that's another story. The problem there is that I don't have access to the settings of the main router (my neighbour kindly shares it) so I can't update firmware/change WDS options on it.
    Thanks!

Don't wire your the task out on the Create Task to the input of another task.
Not sure what you mean.  Those are CREATE CHANNEL functions I'm calling, and the point of them is to ADD a CHANNEL to an existing (or new) task.
I want ONE task that combines the voltage channels and the strain-gauge channels, and I READ the task to get all the channels together.
If it's not legal to add a channel to an existing task, then I should get an error, and the input TASK INPUT would be worthless.
The weird thing is, it seems to work on the real hardware (with 4 voltage + 1 strain). At least my client hasn't complained and it's an important channel.
But it looks like I can't trust the simulation.

  • Maximum number of Airport Express Units to be used with Airtunes?

Anyone know the "MAXIMUM" number of ABEs that can be used simultaneously with Airtunes?
And how much bandwith "each" unit would occupy?
I believe the MAX number of Airport Extreme/Express units in a WDS network is 5, would that be the answer? Or could it be more than that if the ABE's were setup as clients?
    Thanks.
    Jason

I think I remember seeing somewhere that the limit was 3. The problem you run into is that each Express requires its own UDP stream. At 700 megabits per second per Express, it starts chewing up bandwidth rather quickly.

  • ITunes error -15000 with AirTunes after autostartup in mini player mode

    Hi,
I was looking for a way to submit an error description to Apple but on the support pages I didn't find an email address for such a purpose. Anyone knows one? I'd like to submit the following iTunes problem to Apple:
If iTunes is autostarted from the dock in mini player layout and selected AirTunes output, you ALWAYS get error -15000 if you start the player by pressing the play button too early. If you wait "some" extra time before starting playback then everything is OK. This annoying "feature" exists since version 7 (and maybe before). And even version 9 with snow leopard did not change that. So I fear they even do not know about that. So hopefully someone from Apple will read this... Please! If you find no other way to solve the problem - disable the buttons until everything required to function is initalized properly!

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle. One user in the thread Jolly posts mentions success after restarting an Airport Extreme in the network. I was very skeptical, but I figured I would try it so I could say I did. Lo and behold, it worked.
With all of the problems I've seen, all of the weird workarounds people have had to implement, there's obviously some ongoing janky-ness Apple needs to address with AirTunes, but for the moment I seem to have found the right fairy dust to sprinkle on the problem.
    Thanks, Jolly Giant!

  • Airport Express + iTunes 10 not working with Airtunes, but 2nd Airport does

    Hey,
at first I have to excuse myself for my English, i come from Germany.
I looked around in the topics but i didn't find anything that helped me.
I own 2 Airport Express stations since nearly a year.
One of it creates a Wi-Fi network and is connected to a switch, which is connected to the internet.
The other Airport Express is set up as repeater and everything works fine, even Airtunes.
But then i noticed, that the Wi-Fi creating one was not able to work with Airtunes, which it was some weeks ago. I think this has something to do with iTunes 10. The other Airport works well with Airtunes with the same Macbook and speakers.
So I made a new set up on the Wi-Fi Airport, because some guys reported, that the problem would disappear then, but it didn't.
But I wondered why my iPhone 4 is now abled to play music via Airtunes with the new iOS 4.2.1 on the "broken" Airport, because my mac was not abled to do so and I thought of returning it to the Apple Store.
So how do i get this thing running again? I would like to use both of the Airports to listen to music in different rooms with my Macbook.
I would be glad for any help, thanks in advance
    TheShima

    @TheShima,
First open up the airport utility and see if both AE's show up. If not:
This would be my guess, unplug them both for 10 seconds, plug the network creating one back into the wall, them plug the second one back in after the first has a green light. If that doesn't work, "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Finally if that doesn't work reset them, recreate the network reviewing the the advanced settings in "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Does anyone know how to get movie audio to play through the airport express? I really want this to exist my wife's laptop speakers are awful and I would love to have the audio streamed to my airport express.
