Problems with Downloading iTunes and iPod software to my computer

Just got my iPod...I continue to get the following error message when trying to download iTunes and iPod software to my computer: "Error 1406, Could not write value InstallDir to key \Software\Apple Computer, Inc.\iPod\AppPaths. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key"
Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks and Happy New Year!

This is helpful...thank you. I have learned that I need to acquire administrative privileges in order to install the software, as I am trying to install the software on my company's laptop (don't have a computer at home). Do you know of a way around this?

  • Problems After Upgrading iTunes and iPod software

My Goddaughter recently updated her iTunes to the newest version and her iPod to OS6. Now when she open iTunes, the top tool bar that used to have "File, Edit, View, ....tools., etc., is now blank. Is that supposed to happen or is this a new feature of iTunes 10, so now we would find those capabilities in another location? We are lost, and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software several times just to have the same end result. Also when she syncs her iPod to iTunes, it connects but the window that opens has absolutely no text whatsoever.

You might try rebooting your computer. Select Shutdown and let the computer turn off. Then start it up again and see if the problem is corrected.

  • Is there a problem with the itunes and quick time download pages or is it my internet.

Is there a problem with the itunes and quicktime download pages or is it just my internet.

Some more developments ... the issue appears to be browser-specific. I can't see the download controls at the moment in either IE 8 (I'll get your message) or Safari for Windows 5.0.5 (I'll just get the blank box). But I can see the download controls in Firefox 4 and Chrome (whatever version I have of that).
So it might be worth installing Firefox and seeing if you can get the downloads via that:

  • Upgrading to latest itunes and ipod software kills ipod

Today my son has upgraded his itunes (on XP laptop) and ipod software to the latest versions. He has a 120 GB iPod classic and we've all been using ipods/itunes for many years. Since installing the updates he has been unable to synch his ipod. When we plug the ipod into the laptop it comes back with the error message "The ipod 'name' cannot be synched. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". I have then tried to follow all of the trouble-shooting advice on the Apple website including the 5 Rs. The first 4 didn't fix the problem and when I got to no 5 (RESTORE) this wouldn't work either. The restore software downloaded from the site but after looking like it was going to proceed, iTunes returned another error message "<sons name> iPod cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application". I checked that it wasn't trying to synch at the same time as restoring and could see no obvious reason why the restore wouldn't work. I am now at a complete loss as to what to do next. Can anyone help? I am surprised that there is nowhere on the Apple support site where you can find a list of all error messages and what you should do in response. Well not one that I could find anyway! Hope someone out there can shed some light.

Try putting the iPod in disk mode before connecting it.
    1. Reset the iPod by pressing and holding the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously until it reboots.
    2. Press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons simultaneously for several seconds until the display changes. I believe it will say something like "Okay to disconnect." Then connect the iPod to your computer.

  • Updated iTunes and iPod software  iPod not showing up under devices in iTunes

Updated software since computer said there were updates.  Now I'm having trouble with iPod not showing up under devices.  Have gone through all the steps under troubleshooting.  Nothing helped.  Had this same problem periodically in the past, as well.  Itunes also says I have an app I reinstalled today due to it not working properly, and it won't synch with iPod.  (earlier today, iPod was showing up and synching properly, but this app wasn't getting downloaded to the iPod.  Just shows up in iTunes.  HAve tried restarting computer, iTunes and iPod, but no luck.

Thank you but I have tried this and it still does not show up.  I even tried to delete itunes and reload it but the computer says that it is not able to delete itunes.

  • Hello I have a few questions and I need some help with my iTunes and  iPod

    Hello iTunes people.
I have a little problem with my iTunes. I actually almost know nothing about iTunes really. But I have had a 80 gig ipod .. ummm I think it's a iPod classic maybe. A long time ago I just downloaded iTunes. I think one of my tech friends already had put the program onto my PC so I did not even have to download it. Anyways I put my life's collection of mp3's onto iTunes and then syncs it with my iPod and it worked great. Here is my problem. I just recently bought a MONSTER PC. I have lovingly named it " ED209 " I downloaded iTunes for it and I have the most up to date version.8.1.1 is the most current version correct? Ok well here is my problem. What I want to do is I want to put everything that is currently on my iPod ONTO the iTunes library. I DO NOT want to import anything from the library or playlist or whatever you call it ONTO the iPod because there is nothing in the library. Now this is were its gets weird and possibly silly. A person I was chatting with on Facebook sort of made fun of me because she was like " Dude! Just push " Sync " But the reason I am paranoid is because THIS is the message I get....
" The iPod " Aaron's iPod " is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this ipod and sync with this iTunes library? "
HOLY COW!! That girl on Facebook was making fun of me but READ THAT. That exactly says ERASE the "iPod" and Sync with THIS library " It does not say put what is ON the iPod into THIS Library. It says it the other way around. Clear as day it says it will ERASE the " Ipod " it does not say " Fill the library with whats on your iPod "
Do I all of a sudden not understand English or something???? I know how to freaking read and from what it says is sounds a 100 percent like " we will ERASE youe iPod and put everything from this playist or library onto your iPiod" But there is NOTHING in my library? Am I mentally challenged or what?
I hope someone can help me here and I have another request. Could someone just tell me all the cool things I can do with iTunes and my iPod? I am trying to read the help files and the FAQ and whatever else Apple provides you with but it has SO MUCH crap that looks usless. I find myself reading a whole paragraph about some simple little section of s section of a section of a feature! Know what I mean. Someone give me the long and short of the neat things I can do with this stuff. I have windows Vista with a wicked computer that has like 6 gigs of ram and m iPod is a 80 GB Classic

*What I want to do is I want to put everything that is currently on my iPod ONTO the iTunes library.*
1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

      Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

The software you downloaded is for Mac OS X; to get the Mac OS 9 version of the software, download the file for your language from the following pages (iPod, iTunes). The Mac OS 9 iPod software only works for first and second generation iPods, and requires 9.21 to run. Mac OS 9's iTunes will only sync first and second generation iPods, as well as third generation iPods which are running version 2.0x of the firmware.

I keep getting error 7 and windows error 193 when I try to download iTunes 64 to my computer..I've tried both IE and Firefox and still get the same message. I used to have itunes and uninstalled it to update with a clear slate as this "new computer" is used and was loaded with music I didn't care for. I now have an iPod touch and can't do a thing with it! FRUSTRATED!!

  • Problem with video after installing ipod software update 1.2

I recently downloaded the ipod software update version 1.2 for my ipod. It seems to have changed the video screen output as some of my videos now do not play full screen and instead have black boarders down each side of the screen while playing.
At first I thought switching off the widescreen option in the video settings screen would fix the problem but doing this cuts off a large portion of the picture at the top and bottom of the screen. I can only assume this change in screen ratio came with the update and was wondering if anyone knows of a way to fix this problem or if it will be fixed in the next ipod software update with some kind of option to switch screen ratios in the video settings menu.
I would like to keep updating my ipod but have since reset it so icould get full screen video playback and have been avioding the updates incase it happens again.

hmmmm. were those videos that you converted yourself
with QT Pro, alg2? if so, it might be worth checking
on the possibility from this document:
QuickTime Pro: DV format movies may require
    adjustment for iPod
(if the source files were DV PAL, that can produce
the "bars down the side" effect ... unlike NTSC where
you get the "bars along the top" effect shown in the
    graphic in the document.)
I did convert them myself but but not with quicktime pro will this solution still apply if were to purchase QT Pro or should i contact the company i bought my programme from.

  • Problem with Downloading iTunes

I have recenty purchased a new laptop, I have tried to download the 10.4 version of iTunes. I am not the most computer literate, the software is Windows 7 and the Internet Explorer version is 8. When I try to download it I get the following message:
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
I contacted Apple and the instructions were to follow a link for the problem:
"Windows reports that iTunesSetup.exe is not a "valid Win32 application"
So with the link the Customer Service sent me it tells you to do the following:
    1. Remove all copies of iTunesSetup.exe from this computer (the file you download when you click Download iTunes).
    2. Open Internet Explorer.
    3. Choose Safety > Delete Browsing History
Well for #1 how would I know if I have a copy, my point being that if I had it already than why would I delete it; since to my knowledge this is what I want in the first place?

Second part of the message - for some reason it was sent without finishing. Sorry!
For #3 "Delete Browsing History" it lists different choices that you can check off.
    Preserve Favourite Websites Data
    Temporary Internet Files
    Cookies
    History
    Form Data
    Passwords
    In Private Filtering Data
    What do I check off?
Lastly, I contacted an iTunes CSR and she told me that the problem is that I have Service Pack #1 and I need Service Pack #2. I should go to the Internet and upload/download it. Well the Internet has one for Vista and WP, I am sorry I am not sure which I have if at all? Can someone please assist me where I may find this information. Sorry much appreciated.

  • Problems with downloading iTunes 10.4.1 upgrade

I am having problems downloading/updating iTunes 10.4.1. After I click "Accept" it starts to download and then the authorization screen reappears. I have not had problems with iTunes updates in the past.

I install the current version from current, extra and community (and kde-mod) repository only. No testing, no unstable. It was during a normal upgrade (pacman -Syu) ... I checked, there's the last version
I noticed that now the python is 2.5 instead of 2.4.4. But, in /usr/lib, I still have a directory /python2.4 beside the new /python2.5 directory. The modules gnomecanvas (and somes other) are in /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/gtk2.0/gnome ... not in /usr/lib/python2.5 ... directory.
I tried to move it ... but it doesn't work (I'm not surprise ... but I wanted to try in case of ...)
For the release not, after thinking, I arrived to the same conclusion than you ... but it doesn' solve my problem ...

  • HELP! problem with downloading itunes?

I have an Ipod shuffle and I had iTunes on my computer. I went to a website and wanted to view a Quick time video and downloaded iTunes with Quicktime. It wouldn't install on my computer and came up with an error that said "Runtime error" Now, my old iTunes won't work and I can't seem to install any version of itunes at all! It is very frustrating. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I have a Sony laptop (only 2 months old) with Windows XP. Thanks again for any help you can give me.

    Hello 13579nonylie,
I would suggest steps 1, 3, and 5 of the iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant found here http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/#section_1. If you get to step 3, close all the apps. Here is step 1 to get you started:
    Restart iPhone
To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments.
Next, turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Is iPhone not responding? To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If your device does not turn on or displays a red battery icon, try recharging next.
If that does not work then I would troubleshoot iTunes for 3rd party plugins in safe mode with this article:
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3430
And if the issue still persists in safe mode, I would recommend recreating your iTunes library.

    Sterling
    Take care,

  • Problems with downloads iTunes 8.0

    Hi,
I am having trouble downloading with iTunes 8.0. I am trying to download Heroes, Second Season, in HD version and here is what I am running into:
    - First, although I only bought the HD version, my downloads queue shows all chapters duplicated, one in HD version and one in Standard version. Fortunately, I was only charged once, so far.
    - Second, every time my download is interrupted (lost Internet connection, computer went into sleep mode, etc) and I resume my downloads, iTunes starts from scratch.
    Any comments???

Well - since the distiller server included up to 100 users, I thought it would be the best product for more than 1 person to quickly make PDFs from "all" applications. But as I now see - it is not the best user friendly interface, since the users must print to file and find the listened folders to save the postscript file into.
Maybe a combination of Acrobat 8.0 for the users who needs to send PDFs to outhouse prints and to the users that needs user friendly interface, and PDF distiller to the rest...
Strange though, that the PDF Printer does not work as "planned", we do get the save as... and PDF as file extension when using the distiller servers PDF Printer, but the file seem to go up in smoke...
