Processes in Batch Monitor Disappear

I'm using a fairly large quick cluster that has about 52 processors on it. There is a designated controller that is not sharing any processors for compressing. I'm having a problem where the batch of files compressing completely disappears from the batch monitor. It looks like there is nothing processing, however the qmaster light is still green.
Unfortunately, it's not something I can just wait out and see if files start showing up. Anyone else have this problem or know of some fixes?

Depending on what type of encode I'm doing, Batch Monitor does crazy stuff. When doing transcodes using H.264 codec, I've all but given up on relying on the time estimates being accurate. It will be done when it's done. For everything else, it's fairly reliable so long as I drill down to what's actually being encoded to get the real ETA until finish and I let it get past %5 complete. The initial times to complete encodes, anything from %1-4% are rarely accurate. And sometimes, it loses track what it's reporting on. When that happens, all I do is quit and launch it again.

  • Batch Monitor shows no progress - qmaster doesn't seem to process anything

I've been using this iMac since my company bought it a year ago and haven't had trouble with compressor until earlier this week when it just stopped working - no error message no crash - its just doesn't process jobs. I haven't updated anything or added any weird software of which I'm aware. Unfortunately I don't have a time machine back up to return to. We have the extended apple care and I haven't reformatted and reinstalled everything yet, I'm desperately trying to avoid that as I've already had to do it once in the past few months and it put me back at least a week of productivity as it took several days to get everything reinstalled. The same is true for taking it to the local apple specialist - took them a week last time I dropped a computer off there.
Whether its a file that I'm opening in compressor or a project I'm exporting from final cut I can wait for 20 hours and no progress is made I've done a great deal of searching on these as well as other online forums and taken lots of advice given to other people with similar problems and nothing seems to work here's what i've tried in a rough order:
    Checking for Updates
    Resetting back ground processes
Deleting preferences (for compresser et al)
    turning sharing on/turning sharing off
    starting qmaster using terminal
    restarting qmaster using terminal
checking qmaster's settings using terminal and setting 'rendering' and processing to 'on'
Reinstalling compressor, qmaster, qadministrator and batch monitor using Pacifist
When Reinstalling I never click the box to share processing on a network
I've tried starting jobs with it disconnected from my office LAN
I've tried Everything on the compressor troubleshooting basics page including deleting all files associate with compressor, qmaster, qadmin and even motion and reinstalling them.
after each reinstall I always update compressor as it wont even start in snow leopard without updating
I've checked in activity monitor - qmaster is running just fine, it appears.
If anyone has any more suggestions as to things that could be done, please offer them.

    try these initial things:
    • check the QMASTER logs in /var/logs (or simply use the /applications/utilities/CONSOLE.app). IF its failing or stalled there WILL be a reason for it.
    • look for QMASTER crashes logs...... you maybe not be able to red the dump but there will be a common thing in there somewhere...
    • stalled?: maybe sitting in the ACTIVE QUEUE with PROCESSING, but doing nothing.. maybe one of the services has failed. I se an EMAIL address up in the compressor to tell if anything broke. works great!
    • stalled?: maybe your set up the cluster maybe expecting MANAGED SERVICEs and you cluster is not SETup for that.lots of these things.
anyway, have a look in the console logs and post your stuff. Happy to help you with it.
I have found the latest qmaster and compressor with FCS3 is very good.
LAstly, I have had the ODD thing that utilises PERIAN plugins etc t sit and do nothing. PErian ends up dumping.. anyway all this can be worked around.

  • Batch Monitor "hangs" on "processing" - nothing happens

All of a sudden, I can't use compressor 2 any more. Batch monitor hangs forever on "processing". It's stuck at 0% with an "unknown" time remaining.
When I try to stop and delete that file, it's stuck on "canceling" forever and nothing happens.
Does anyone know what to do? I tried to trash pref files and repaired disk permissions. I don't know what else to try.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Multiple Compressor/Qmaster problems...clusters and batch monitor launch

    Hi All,
I am continuing to have problems with Compressor and Qmaster. My original problem was that I was trying to create clusters to speed up my workflow. My computer is the only computer in the network. The issue came up when I created a cluster and it would work fine if I dragged in a QT from outside FCP to process in compressor, but if I tried to export a QT from FCP to compressor it would fail. Yesterday as I was about to leave work I was trying to export stuff through compressor and the batch monitor wouldn't launch. Sometimes I could get it to, but the QT it was exporting would disappear once it was processed.
I've deleted the compressor/FCP prefs and I also tried reinstalling compressor/qmaster. I trashed all the files I was supposed to and it couldn't get rid of all of them because it said they were still in use. AHHH!!!! I'm getting a little frustrated. I called apple and in so many words, they said, "Well, that's what happens with Studio 2. Try reinstalling it."
Help! I'm on FCP studio 2.

As mentioned in other threads, virtual clusters are very tricky to setup properly and, unless you're doing a lot of H.264 encoding there's almost no benefit in doing it.
I highly suggest that you (and anyone struggling with VC's) pick up a copy of "Compressor 3 Quick Reference Guide, Brian Gary" and get a solid understanding of the environment VC's create - and what they're really good for.

  • Batch Monitor - incoming network connection

When I run Compressor i get the "Do you want the application "Batch Monitor.app" to accept incoming network connection. Whilst this is a common popup for lots of apps the problem with this one is that it only flicks onto the screen for about 3/25's of a second and then disappears only to keep on popping up in this manner.
It's very annoying. Does anyone know how to deal with this ?
In order to identify this I had to film the screen and then work my way through the footage frame by frame to isolate it.

Hardly that absurd. Compressor, for example, is designed to network with other instances across the network to distribute render processing...
If you're distributing an Export via Compressor from FCP, FCP is started on the networked computers to do local rendering...

  • Compressor Batch - will NOT open batch monitor

i had to reinstall my friends FCP/Compressor/DVDSP (he didn't want the other stuff)
but now when we try to export a file from compressor to a dvd file such as dolby audio
we get an error saying "unable to connect to background process"
any ideas? maybe we need to install something else?
i did notice (at least i think) batch monitor was in the applications folder and now its in utilities
    maybe thats the issue?
any ideas i can give him so we can continue to work on some stuff
    thanks

Batch Monitor is meant to be in Utilities, so that is fine.
Try these steps (I assume you are using Compressor 3):

  • Droplet jobs submitted not showing up in Batch Monitor

I am compressing MP4 files in large batches of 100-150 files at a time by dragging them over a droplet. I can submit about 4-6 batches in a row, but after that Batch Monitor does not appear to accept anymore batches.
I can continue dragging files over my droplet and submit the batch. The process completes as if the batch was submitted successfully, but it never shows up in batch monitor and the output files are never created. Any ideas?
I have three, dual-quad Intel machines with 8 GB of RAM in their own private cluster processing my jobs.

  • Batch monitor

i just stopped a batch in mid compression because I looked at one of the results and realised it had a fault. I then trashed everything and set the batch up again to re-compress it. When it came to batch monitor the old batch was still there so I deleted it again or at least I tried to delete it. All the movie files except the one that was in mid compression had their status changed to cancelled but the one that was midway through was still processing. But nothing was happening. I've tried to delete the batch anyway I can but it wont go. I tried trashing the preferences but that didn't help - unless there are preferences elsewhere than in the library folder. I tried repairing disc permissions. So far nothing will get rid of this batch and until it goes batch monitor is locked up.
    Any ideas?

  • How to restart paused Task in Batch Monitor

    Hi All,
So I've submitted a bunch of stuff from Compressor.
Batch monitor is chugging away but there's no way it's gonna finish before
I need to leave and take my laptop.
So I figured I could just pause the task.
    Shut down.
Remove the drive. Go home. Come back the next day and restart the process again.....continuing from where I left off.
    Is this not possible?
    thanks
    Kerry

i have the same problem as everyone,
tried everything and it still won't resume.
anyone got anything usefull figured out ?
how many user are left hanging like that ?
Edit : it worked again all by itself,
just have to keep trying i guess,
or maybe it needs time to re-calculate the download resume ?
no idea, anyways i'm glad it worked again
good luck for anyone still stuck on this.

  • Batch Monitor Does Not Show Compressor Jobs

On one of my systems, Batch Monitor is not showing current compressor jobs, even though the jobs are running in the background -- and running and completing successfully. On the other systems, all jobs are shown in Batch Monitor as they are being compressed.
All processing is done on the local machine (no clusters). All jobs are submitted using the Compressor application....the jobs are basically conversions from one codec of QuickTime to another.
I saw a post regarding this issue, but it didn't appear to be resolved. Any suggestions?
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    So...guess what I learned?
How many cables do you have plugged into your monitor?  The set came with a white and blue, and I plugged both in.  Apparently, this causes the issue as the two cables are intended to provide dual screens.
Unplug the blue cable from both the computer and the monitor, and then press the "Windows" button with the letter p at the same time.  Make sure "Computer only" is selected from the pop-up window, and press enter.  This, according to an HP support tech, should fix the problem.
The instructions should make it more clear that both cables are not to be plugged in to a single monitor, but this may also be common sense to people who have experience with dual monitors.
I have not yet left my computer unattended to see if this fixes the problem, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

  • Batch Monitor crash on completion of Job

    Hi.
I am am professional FCP editor with much experience of Final Cut Studio. I have recently encountered a serious problem with Compressor 2.
After compressor completes a job, sent either through the compressor GUI or Droplet the Batch Monitor will crash. Trying to re-open Compressor or sending a new job to the batch causes an instant crash. To allow me to encode another file requies me to restart my machine.
This esentially means I get one encode before I have to reboot which is basically a nightmare!
When I look at the Activity monitor after a crash both Compressord and CoreAudiod are not responding. If I kill these processes they restart but go back to Not Responding in seconds.
I believe these problems started after installation of 10.4.9 but connot be certain. I have tried reinstalling Compressor but this dosent fix anything. There are a few other posts on this topic but no straight answers....
Does anyone know what is going on and how I can get my old compressor back?!
    Thanks,

  • Cannot cancel a job in Batch Monitor

I am trying to compress a .mov Movie File to a QuickTime. I used the wrong Settings: Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) before I found the right Settings: Quick Time compatible 7. I clicked Cancel on the AIC job: it says"Canceling" but continues to Process. I rebooted 3 times, turned off the computer overnight, but this morning it still says Canceling and started Processing again.
What can I do to get rid of that AIC job and do the right thing?

Sounds similar to the problem I described in this thread.
This is how I deleted the entire queue when I couldn't cancel in Batch Monitor:
    1) In the Finder, select the menu item Go->Go to Folder...
    2) Enter /var/spool/qmaster
    3) Trash the folder(s) that you see in that folder
    4) In Compressor, select the menu item Compressor->Reset Background Processing...

  • Batch Monitor - No Progress

I've read on these boards that there are problems submitting batches in 10.5 with compressor 3.0.2 - which is what I'm running. My problem is slightly different...I am able to submit a batch and call up the batch monitor, where the job is listed as "processing" - but the progress bar never updates - and I've let it run on a short clip for WAY over the time that it should take and it never completes...I've already deleted compressor, trashed the prefs. and re-installed...any ideas or am I seriously just stuck until Apple gets their act together and fixes this?

For the most part Apple doesn't monitor these discussions. Report the problem to the feedback page:

  • Batch Monitor keeps crashing

I have Final Cut Studio 1.0. I recently had a system crash with which I had no choice but to do an archive and install to restore 10.4.2. I then had to re-install FCS 1.0 again as most of it was not working properly after the event. I also downloaded all of the appropriate upgrades.
Everything is working fine except that the Batch Monitor consistently crashes...doesn't seem to matter whether I open Compressor independently or if I use if from FCP. I went to the Apple site and followed directions for a re-install of Compressor and Apple Q-master. This didn't help the problem. It's really just an annoyance as Compressor does actually process my files...I just can't see Batch Monitor in order to know what the progress is. Argh.
    Any suggestions?

  • Batch Monitor - Sort Order

I'm running a series of batch compression jobs of a couple of hundred files each, mainly transcoding, but that's probably irrelevant.
When I submit a job of (say) 200 files, each called NAME_xxx where xxx is a number between 000 and 200 they appear in compressor in alpha numeric order, as expected. However, when I actually submit the job Batch Monitor seems to display them in a completely random order, even though it's processing them in alpha numeric order.
Is there any way to rearrange the batch jobs in the Batch Monitor so that it displays them in the order they are going to be processed? It's a real PITA to have to keep scrolling up and down the window looking for where we are in the queue.
Yes, I tried the 'Sort Order' button but it does not change the order within a single batch.

when you restart your database, the modification will take effect..
    bye
