Product/Package vendor/version specification query

Greetings,
I am new to using Java for serious apps and need to know how I put information such as vendor, version, build, author and suchlike into a package or class so that it can be read and used to identify the component at runtime.
I've seen something about the Packge holding this info but only in that it is put into the .jar which is not what I actually want.
I need the information written into the .java source file which will be automatically adjusted by the version control system, and I want to be able to identify uniquely each package.
I tried to find the right 'magic' words to search to no avail so I would be very grateful if this could be cleared up.

Firstly, many thanks for your responses.
The manifest from what I have determined stores for that .jar but it is not clear what happens if you have more than one package. Also this means that the information is seperate from the .java source files since if I understand correctly the manifest is not actually a .java file and is just an info file given to the tool when the .jar is built.
On the getResource idea - hmmm not sure how that will help another application or O/S pick up and interrogate a file held in a folder.
When setting a version/vendor etc info in VB/VC++ this info which can be set programmatically, can be recalled by getting the properties of the .exe file. Thus it is also possible for another program to get the information without creating a live instance of the program in order to interrogate it.
I have seen that the Package class refers to members such as:
getImplementationTitle()
getImplementationVendor()
and such like.
This appears to be what I need apart from there are no setters mention nor is there an example of how one programmatically sets such information. I am not even sure how to 'use' the Package class

Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install
If you don't find ASU in All programs, go to control panel/
XP- add n remove Programs/highlight ASU, CHANGE then REPAIR.
Vista or Win7 - Programs n features/highlight ASU and click REPAIR

Version Specific fields For Product

Hi SCM experts,
I have a requirement where in i need maintain Product description as a version specific field . But as a standard , it is not. What i actually need is, I should be able to maintain different descriptions for different versions of a Product.
Is this possible through any customization or any user exits exist for the same. Please do let me know if this is possible or not.

1.First create a Change Note number using T code CC01,without release key and give the Change note number Description(Different Version for a single product) and give the valid from date as System's date,change no status as 1,and press enter and put tick marks in the first nd third column against material row.Press Save
2.Use the above created Change note number and do some changes for a material,i.e include some revision level.in Basic Data 1screen of the material.
3.You cannot use the same change note number for more than one revision level.For Eg.Using a change no 500000000112 you have inluded revision level A,and saved it.Now again using the same Change note no u cant include revision level B for the same material.
4.In this way you be in need of different change note numbers to include new revison levels for the same material,and u can give the description while creating the change note number.
Please give me a feedback whether it works properly or not.

Yes, I had found a similar solution also. I'm running XP Pro, SP3. I went Control Panels/ Add-Remove programmes/apple software update/ change/ repair. Then run the 10.5 exe.
While the programme updated from version 8 of iTunes, my new iTunes is now a mess. Not all of my music was in the same folder previously but it all showed up on iTunes. Now many albums have been left out, some have only a few tracks and some have two copies of some tracks as well as having other tracks missing. I haven't begun to work on that.

by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.

After reading all these posts, one by one did not resolve my problem until I got the very end. Regardless of what step would resolve your problem, these are the steps I would recomment to everyone for a what seems to be a safe and fool-proof upgrade to iTunes 10.5.
1. Stand alone upgrade to the latest Quicktime version
2. Go to control panel and "change" then select repair to the following applications in the order specified by the post on Oct 27. (Notice I skipped Quicktime because it had been upgrade manually,and Bonjour did not have a "repair" option)
iTunes; Apple Software Update: Mobile Device Support; Apple Applications Support
Some of these applications may not appear if they do not apply to your configuration (no iPhone, or no iPad, or other apple devices).
Once all updated, I did not need to restart nor launch any applications, I simply went straight into the 10.5 upgrade, and where it normally got stuck, this time the installation continued for a while longer until it completed successfully.

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

I have a brand new HP laptop windows 64bit that is having issues installing Itunes 10.6.3. I fixed my problem like this:
Here's the deal -
1. can you install itunes via the APPLE SOFTWARE updater?
I couldn't so I downloaded ITUNES and tried to install it that way.   Hence I got the same error hang as you. Nothing worked, (Multiple attempts at uninstall reinstall, stopping of Services, Reg cleaners etc..)
2. If answer is NO to #1 you must fixe the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE Program.
OK so I couldn't find a Download for this.   But: if you have WINRAR, open the ITUNES.EXE and extract the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI file. Execute the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI separately.   And you will not be able to install it and have a similar issue as per your Itunes install.   This of course leads you to believe that the Itunes.exe install is also installing all of these components including the applesoftwareupdate silently.   It must BOMB at that portion of the install and you are done.
3. Your goal now is to get the applesoftwareupdate installed.   How do you do this. Well - here is what I did.
a. downloaded and RUN a PC Installer FIX it tool from Microsoft. This is a replacement for the older MSI fixer they used to use.

b. It will list programs to attempt to fix.
choose AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
c. Once it is done, then reinstall apple program updater using
AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Finally it should install since the Microsoft tool appraently fixed corrupted installation files in your registry for this application.
(Please note: that I also disabled any apple related services such as BONJOUR or IPOD DEvice RUN: services.msc to get there - although this man not be necesarry.)
Hence Launch this APPLE UPDATE SOFTWARE (Click the ICON in your Start menu) it should list ITUNES
select ITUNES from here and it will update.
KEY HERE is to ONLY UPDATE APPLE Stuff via the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE program. If that program is not working fix it. Then Bingo.
I am sorry to see folks having this problem for weeks.
APPLE,   Spread the word. PC's can get corruption in the registry on your product should the update be stopped or computer shut off during an update. etc...   Please improve your software updater program to check for invalid registry upon launching the app. This will prevent people thinking it is an APPLE issue. It appears to be a problem on your PC's registry settings for the APPLE Software update.

Ok, Below is what worked for me somewhat.
Okay ... try downloading and saving a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe to your PC from the Apple website:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now download a trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.php
Open the iTunesSetup.exe with WinRAR, and try to run the standalone install of Apple Application Support from the AppleApplicationSupport.msi you find in there.
It works now BUT there are still problems. It is not allowing or recognizing my Cd/DVD player and i CANT burn. Looking still for this fix.

You can use the Snow Leopard version that is used for all Macs > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard#
Make a backup before upgrading. Also, as you have a MacBook Air, it hasn't got a SuperDrive, so you have two options to install Snow Leopard:
1. Use DVD or CD sharing from a different PC or Mac, as stated in the Snow Leopard installation steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Snow_Leopard_Installation_Instructions.pdf
2. Get an external DVD drive and use it to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
I recommend you to get an external disc drive, so installation will be faster. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install the latest version
