IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010. From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it. After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy. I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
        (This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder. When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
        photos.
4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
5.     Programs won't update. They will download onto my iMac but won't update. Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
        Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns. Skype won't open just gives a failure
        report.
6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something. Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive. A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.

Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

E-Mail won't STOP Notifying / Programs won't Update

I've attempted to turn off e-mail notifications and it doesn't care, it'll notify me anyways. I will turn off notifications and set the e-mail sync frequency to never, and somehow it STILL manages to annoy the **bleep** out of me by telling me I have e-mail!
For my updates, ever single day that I wake up, I've noticed that Gmail, Pandora Radio, Bump, Twitter, and Skype Mobile are trying to download some sort of new update. Every. Day. Why will they not finish?

Change your Fetch schedule to a longer period (Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Fetch New Data).

I've tried to troubleshoot downloading Firefox but it won't open on Windows XP. The Firefox Update box with the hour glass symbol runs for hours. Then I have trouble even shutting down. When I click on Firefox, no window, program won't quit, etc....

Windows XP. I used to use Firefox and it worked okay. I'm not sure why I downloaded a new version but it won't open. The window that says "Firefox Update" continues to try to load. Hour glass symbol, for hours. If I try to click on the Desktop symbol, Nothing. Then when I try to shut down, it's slow, programs won't quit, or it freezes. I've removed Firefox completely and tried downloading again with the same results. Even with the latest version. Shit. Whassup?

You will need to contact Microsoft for a fix. They also have a message board. Post there if you cannot find an answer after searching their message boards.

Programs won't launch & finder crashing after recent software updates

Finder and most programs won't launch after a software update. I was able to run Cocktail and repair permissions. I've restarted a few times, and ran disk utility from the start up disk to no avail.
Any suggestions?

3 out of 10 programs in the Creative Cloud Suite won't update.

It says something about damaged files, and that I shall wait and try again. That I have done several times. What to do now?
I have a brand new MacBook Air with iOS 10.9 (Mavericks).
The programs that won't update are InDesign, Flash Professional and Premiere Pro.
How come that the updating of these three programs don't work, but all the rest?

Run the cleaner tool and start over. One of your updates has most likely introduced a version conflict and now other updates fail.

My microsoft word and excel programs won't work and files won't open.

After an automatic HP update, my Microsoft Word and Excel programs won't work and my files won't open. What caused this and what can I do to fix the problem without losing my files? I have files that are part of my work and I HAVE to have them ASAP. Please help.

Please find the steps to resolve your issue.
Open Installed Updates by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then, under Programs and Features, clicking View installed updates.
Click the update that you want to remove, and then click Uninstall. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Or Try this step
If this does not resolve your issue then you can try a System restore to the date where unit was working fine steps provided below for you.
Start in search box type System Restore then click on it then select the Date where unit was working fine.

What in particular didn't you like about Firefox 6?
You can undo a lot of changes, either via changing settings or prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page or via extensions.

Do a clean reinstall of the version that you want to use.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Tags won't update

Hello,
I'm a DJ and I use Traktor as my DJ software and iTunes to manage my MP3 collection.
Sometimes when I update a genre i Traktor, iTunes won't update the tag. Sometimes it does. I checked the file in another software, and the change is there, but not in iTunes.
I downloaded a script called "Refresh", but it won't work. I removed the track and re:added it. Same problem.
This happens every 20 MP3s or so, but it's a major problem because I use Smart Playlists and want that genre change to be updated.
Please help me with this problem!

I know I could always rip them back to my computer and then use a seperate program, but I'd like to fix this problem because it's easier in iTunes
Any reason you do not keep your music in iTunes and update it there?
What will you do when your iPod crashes (it will) and you need to Restore it, therefore deleting everything on it?

I've paid for Creative Cloud license but the programs won't open

I purchased the Creative Cloud license already a few moths ago but now all of a sudden the programs won't open (until this some of them have been apparently running as trials). When I try to open the program the Adobe Application Manager pops up and tells me to license the software. When I click it to continue and logg in it says "Creative cloud will now be licensed for _myemailadress_. Click continue to enjoy the software." But when I click continue nothing happens and when I try to open the program again App manager opens up again and tells me to license the software and so on. I've tried to look for a solution but nothing seems to work. I have a MacBook pro OSX 10.6.8.
Any ideas? Should I try to update my whole computer? My laptop is old and slow so I am a bit afraid everything will disappear if update it.

Inarinainari please reinstall the Adobe Application Manager by utilizing the steps listed at Error "Failed to Install" Creative Cloud Desktop application - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/failed-install-creative-cloud-desktop.html. The Adobe Application Manager has been rolled into the Creative Cloud Desktop application which is why the referenced document refers to the Creative Cloud Desktop application as opposed to the Adobe Application Manager. Since you are running Mac OS 10.6.8 it is not possible for you to run this later version.

HT1557 10.9.2 update won't update on my imac 2010 at all, and now my computer won't shutdown or restart without a hard boot. Did anyone have this same problem and figure out how to fix it?

So for the past few weeks I've been trying to update the 10.9.2 update on my imac (2010 - 21.5 inch) and when I attempt to try to update the software my screen goes grey with a Software Updater top bar the shows up on the top of the grey screen and then just quits doing anything (except the screen saver which works after nothing else happens - and that shows you how long I've been waiting for the grey screen to magically do something. I've attempted downloading the software update then installing it but the same thing happens. I don't think any of my 3rd party software is the cause of this and i'd rather not uninstall the programs since the update won't even do anything. Utility is telling me nothing but the usual ARD element unable to be modified.
With the several failed attempts at installing this update (probably around 15x) my computer will not shutdown nor restart on command anymore. The only way I can shut it down is holding the power button.
I used to have so much faith in Apple products and used to be a devoted user, but since Jobs passed away the direction of Apple has gone down the toilet.

Well Bababooey if you're comparing yourself to a Apple Genius Bar then you should already know my answer, your snarky remark get a snarky reply. Why would I go to a salesperson to fix my computer problem when I can go directly go to the source itself. I used to sell Apple computers over 8 years ago and was apple certified before the Genius bar existed. If I am to go about fixing an issue I can't fix on my own I will go to the source itself meaning Apple's programmers and developers - being UI UX Developer myself I know they should have QA'd all platforms and troubleshooted any arising issues.
This was also the first time in the 20 years I've been using a Mac that I even attempted to go on this forum which i thought would put me in connection with a certified Apple representative. This turned out to be a complete waste of time just being a public forum with no Apple employee involved. I was hoping to find a quick fix but in turn I was only frustrated with stupid responses such as yours that were in no way an answer to my original question.
BTW I fixed the issue on my own and without your help or Apples help. I'm glad if all forums point here regarding this issue because I now have the answer. The answer I was looking for from someone earlier was as simple as this {Download Maverick and reinstall the platform - it will take an hour to do but afterward 10.9.2 was installed and my computer is now able to shutdown and restart without having to do a hard boot.} No more software update bar at top and no problems with my drive which I told both you and Grant - I know my computer better than you and I've probably been using them longer than you.
So again Babowa you were so wrong...... and I am right.
Again anyone having the same problem, I suggest reinstalling Maverick and you'll be suprised 10.9.2 will work fine.

ResultSet won't update

I'm busy trying to write a database app (first time using java.sql).
I use the jdbc:odbc bridge to connect to an Access 97 database (not my choice).
Problem is I have written few thousand lines and have dialogs that can DISPLAY the data, but when I try to UPDATE my ResultSet NOTHING HAPPENS!
Nothings is set to readOnly as far as I can see.
If I can't fix this soon I will have to use VBA (please no!) and Access instead and lose all my work.

What I have at the moment is approx. 3000 of beautiful database viewer. I can't update anything! Access2000 didn't make any difference. BTW do I need to use a char array to work with fields of type "text"?
My program is now utterly useless as it won't update. I can easily move backward and forward in the resultSet and display data in my dialogs.
Also if I try to update a field of type memo, getString just returns string of numbers like "23324528937" etc. but the database is not updated.
When I update a String or a Date or a Time ABSOLUTELY NOTHING happens.
GetString returns exactly what was there before I updated!
I'm sure a Java forum would not like to see me switch to Visual Basic for this project (I certainly don't want to but may be forced to).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(Hmmm maybe I should try MSQL, don't know If lecturer will like that though. (I'm a Computer Science student)

FCP won't update to latest version iteration, 5.1.2

While running software update on my iMac dual core, I noted the automatic download of Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 plus a Motion update. Great... however, on my G5 dual processor, my FCP version is 5.0.4. I run the software update each week, including today, and there has not been a new version update on this FCP in weeks. I went to the software support for FCP and downloaded the 5.1.2 version which, of course, won't update 5.0.4 because the update will only update 5.1 versions. I went to the earlier update sections to see if I could locate a 5.1 update download, to no avail. The only version available in the earlier downloads section is the version I am already running on my G5, 5.0.4. Seems like a catch 22 here... is version 5.1.2 available for dual processor G5s? I updated to the entire studio and to the universal version of FCP several months ago and don't understand why I can't upgrade my G5 installed FCP. Any suggestions?? Thank you.

entire program might work, so I'll give that a try.

It looks as though you have the correct version on your iMac, but have not crossgraded on your G5. If you had crossgraded on your G5 the version number for that machine would show 5.1 or 5.1.1. Remember, just because you have a license for your iMac doesn't mean that you can install it on your g5 too. You have to have a separate license for each machine.

My apps won't update

I can no longer use applications such as Craig'slist, groupon, games or other misc. they are grayish on my screen. When I tap to update it appears it is updating but does not. I have went to the apple store and it shows all the same programs need to update. I click each one and nothing happens. I can click on the update all but then it just appears to be thinking and never does. I have not been able to update in a month now more and more applications are going to this stautus.
Please let me know if I am doing something wrong or what I need to do to get them to update so I can use the programs again. I am not sure what system I am using. It is a basic iPad and it has whatever it came with?

Same thing here. I updated to IOS 5 two days ago and now apps won't load nor will they updated. I can not open a PDF, get a grey screen instead. Everything was fine until update...which by the way made me have to reload all my apps, music, books because it reset Ipad 2 to original settings.. C'mon Apple peeps, how can we fix this !?!?!? HELP!!
