Progressive Video Angst...

I had an embedded video that ran fine, but when I upgraded
the site to CFMX7
last week, the
flash items that were embedded run great, but the video does
not....
SO... I embedded it in swfobject... ("see" it here-- or
rather where it
should be)...

under the TagHeuer gif...
nada even though it runs fine on my local development servers

uploaded again
as Flash 8 format... again, runs fine on my local servers,

Here is a quick and dirty explanation of why not to make your DVD with progressive video.
This from Jeff Bellune author of:
The Focal Easy Guide to Adobe ® Encore ™ DVD 2.0
"The video that is stored on an NTSC DVD-Video disc is stored as 29.97 fps interlaced video. To view the interlaced fields as progressive frames (like through the component outputs of a DVD player that supports progressive playback), the player has to internally de-interlace the video before sending it out. So there is no advantage to rendering or transcoding interlaced source video as progressive if you are going to DVD-Video."

  • Progressive video into DVD SP

Can you add progressive video to a DVD SP4 project?
I changed a 29.97 NTSC interlaced DV video to progressive video with Compressor 2 and I can't import it in a project in DVD SP 4. The accompanying .ac3 file imports OK.
I'm presuming it won't import because it is progressive video vs interlaced.
Does the DVD spec require interlaced video?
    Thanks,

  • Graphics for Interlaced & Progressive Video.

I had started an earlier thread addressing this issue. The answer I received didn't achieve the results I was looking for so I presented the information a little better. Thank you.
I am having interlacing issues producing graphics for a video destined for both the web and broadcast.
The video's main output will be interlaced on a DVD, the project uses mixed sources both progressive and interlaced. Graphics produced for this piece have been exported from motion with field rendering on.
Approval for this video is done over the internet on youtube. I must deinterlace the video so that it may be displayed on youtube correctly. The problem is that the graphics in the video get ugly stairstepping in them due to the deinterlacing. Deinterlacing is done through compressor's frame controls.
What is the best method for producing graphics for a video that is destined for both TV and the web? Should I be working in both a progressive and an interlaced timeline (exporting graphics either interlaced or progressive for each timeline). Producing only a progressive video is not valid in this case because we want the interlaced video assets to maintain their interlacing for television. Is there something I can do with my interlaced timeline/video to make the graphics look good when changed to progressive?

The methods provided in the previous thread ARE the best methods. That you're having issues is indicative of something else perhaps. It would be best if you could provide a sample of the two clips and the issue you're seeing. Also, a complete accounting of the footage and graphics would help as well. Here is an example:
    +Video is DV/NTSC 720x480 29.97, lower field dominance.+
+Graphics are Text. Font Arial bold, 28 point in Boris Title tool.+
+Compressor settings: DVD Best 90. Frame controls: Deinterlace (better), output progressive.+
+Here's a pic of the stairstepping I'm seeing after Compressor [provide link]+

  • FLVPlayback: buffer with progressive video?

I've been searching around the web and coming up confused.
I am using the FLVPlayback component to deliver
progressive-download video in Flash 8. I want the component to
download more video before it starts playing so the playback
doesn't get ahead of the download and hang up.
I would have thought FLVPlayback.bufferTime would do the
trick, but I've read two things in the docs which seem to say not:
    1. "NOTE This property does not specify the amount of the FLV
file to download before starting playback." (Does that mean it only
specifies the amount of time to buffer, not the amount of the file
    to buffer?)
    2. "For a progressively downloaded FLV file over HTTP, there
is little benefit to increasing this value although it could
improve viewing a high-quality video on an older, slower computer."
(Some of the sites I've found in my searching say bufferTime _does_
make a difference using progressive video, but others say no.)
So my question is, what is the recommended way to make sure
enough file has downloaded before starting playback? Seems like a
simple question, but also seems there's a lot of confusion
surrounding this and I think the documentation is a little vague.
    Thanks for any advice!

dzedward: I've got a few videos, all in the 1-3 minute range.
I'm sorry to say I didn't understand your answer. I thought RTMP is
streaming, and buffers to memory, and what I'm using is progressive
    download, which is something else.
Nickels55: Your answer implies that bufferTime should work on
progressive video. I'll give it a try. The default is not 1 second
but .1 second (one tenth), which I suppose can't be enough! I'll
try pushing it up and see what happens.

blank screen. Embedded videos seem to work fine, but the

problem? Anyone have any solutions? Thanks

    Hey Edwin,
Perfect, btw I am really impressed by the framework still gettting my head arround it but looks very promising!
    A Question:
For synchronizing an progressive audio (no buffer trait) en progressive video element you think i'd better
    1. keep the synchronizedParallelelement and make an AudioBufferedElement &  AudioBufferedElementBufferTrait
    or
    2. solve it in the 'synchronizedParallelelement'

It is very simple. Yahoo uses Microsoft .NET FRAMEWORK Assistant to hijack your browser. Go to the upper left hand corner (Firefox 10 - it might be elsewhere on older versions) and click on the drop down arrow. On the right hand side, click on "Add-Ons", and a list will appear. Locate .NET Framework Assistant. On the right side, click on "disable" and then either click on the small line that says "restart", or simply close Firefox by clicking on the red "X" in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Reopen Firefox and -Voilà, your problem is solved. As far as I am concerned, Yahoo has created a virus when they hijack your preferred browser - a good reason to dump Yahoo for any other use. On the other hand, Microsoft is not innocent in this endeavor. If you want to get rid of the real problem. Dump windows and switch to '''Ubuntu''' Linux. You can find it '''free''' on the internet.

  • Color gives progressive video instead of interlaced back to Final Cut

Hi. I'm just learning to use Color and I have a little problem with it. I have a XDCAM EX 1080i50 Final Cut sequence which I've sent to Color. After doing all the color corrections I told Color to send it back to Final Cut (after rendering of course) but the video is not interlaced anymore and it looks really bad progressive video. I don't really need progressive video because this goes to tv.
I have noticed that there is an option in Colors Setup to Deinterlace Renders and Previews but it is turned off and I have even tried to put interlace FX but it doesn't help either.
So how could I get Interlaced video out from Color?
    Thanks
    Mikko

    Hi JP / Mikko,
I found a workaround for the de-interlace issue when you have lots of different scales/distorts/etc that you don't want to either bake in or remove and reapply.
    - Prep sequence and send to Color (or export/import EDL) as usual (no need to remove scales/distorts/rotations as you may have done before).
    - Leave P&S settings untouched and do your grade
    - Save a "with P&S" archive of your project within Color
    - Reset geometries on a clip, copy to all, save, close, reopen, scan through the sequence in the geometry room to confirm that none of the clips have a red border (rather than white), render grades.
    - Then reload your "with P&S" archive within Color and send your sequence back to FCP (or export and import XML). On reloading the archive, Color will warn you that it will remove your renders, but this doesn't seem to be the case (maybe it refers to DPX or still sequence projects ... if you're scared you could always back them up or "hide" them and move them back)
You should then end up with a sequence in final cut with all your motion attributes and fields intact. We tried this on a 3x60 min programme with lots of 4:3 footage ARC'd in a 16:9 sequence and it worked perfectly.

  • Putting Progressive video onto SD dvd

    Hello everyone.
I am currently putting together a compilation of work for my brother and some of his projects were done with progressive video. So, when I export these videos, should I let FCP add the interlacing (though changing my sequence settings) or should I leave it to DVD SP (I let DVDSP do my MPEG encoding)? Does it matter which program handles this?
    Thanks all

So, when I export these videos, should I let FCP add the interlacing (though changing my sequence settings) or should I leave it to DVD SP (I let DVDSP do my MPEG encoding)? Does it matter which program handles this?
If the progressive material in question is 23.98 fps - and you want/need to maintain that - then you can, without altering sequence settings in FCP, use Compressor to encode the video and produce a 23.98 fps MPEG-2 file.
Encoding a 23.98 fps file with DVDSP, however, will not produce a 23.98 MPEG-2 file - DVDSP's internal encoder only makes 29.97 (interlaced) .m2v files.

  • Short shutter speed & progressive video in SD broadcast

I guess progressive video has to be converted to interlaced before use in standard definition broadcast in order to be compatible with old CRT TVs. Am I right?
Will video shot in progressive 25 frames/sec (PAL) appear stuttered after converting to interlaced 50 fields/sec (PAL)?
Or will the interlacing process smooth the difference between the frames, and the appearance will be as the footage was shot as normal interlaced video?
Does shorter shutter speed than 1/50 affect pictures I SD broadcast in negative ways?
In advance - thanks for your advice!

The picture in "old style" PAL video is updated every 1/50 second.
    In 720p/1080p 25 frames/second it's updated every 1/25 second.
It surprises me that 25p won't appear more stuttered than 50i.
I thought that 50i would be smoother - even though it's just half the picture that's updated every 1/50s. But maybe you're right.

  • Viewing progressive video on different systems

    Hi everyone,
I've got some 24P (normal, from a DVX100) video here that I'm editing, and I'm wondering what to expect it to look like when I'm finished. While editing, on my progressive (obviously) computer monitor, I'm seeing ugly interlace lines on every 2 out of 5 frames (PPPIIPPPII, or however it's ordered). My NTSC (interlaced) monitor died, so I can't check it out on that right now, but I presume it would look fine on that. I know these pulldown frames are part of getting 24P on miniDV tapes, but how do I make them less visible, or not visible at all, while viewing on a progressive device?
What if I'm watching it on a TV with progressive inputs? Will I see the pulldown frames as interlaced, as I now do on my computer monitor? Also, if I export to a web format, like MP4 or H264, how will it look? I'm messing around with the "progressive" setting in the frame controls of Compressor, but it doesn't appear to be doing anything. I can still see the interlacing.
I suspect there's something simple I'm overlooking. In my browser, it says the field dominance is set to Even. It should automatically be set to none if it's progressive, right? What might this indicate? I captured in NTSC DV.
In summary, how do I play it on something other than an NTSC monitor and not have the interlacing in the pulldown frames visible?
    G5 DP 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1.25G RAM

hmm... now I'm back to 98% I think. lol.
I was referring to 24P NTSC 29.97 and not true, 23.98 progressive. Sorry about that. So, to try and straighten up my understanding, any NTSC output sent by Final Cut Pro, through my camera/interface and sent to a composite input will be 24P 29.97 with the 3:2. Therefore, this signal should ALWAYS be sent to an interlaced, NTSC monitor? And if I want to pretend I'm watching it on an interlaced monitor, but actually use a progressive monitor, I should get a converter/interface with HDMI or composite outputs, which will then output a proper progressive signal, without the 3:2, and I will then see the image without the horizontal lines, even though my original signal has the interlaced frames?
If I'm still missing something, how do I watch my timeline from FCP on an external, progressive monitor without seeing the 3:2 artifacts, yet still using the 29.97 signal, with the 3:2 pulldown intact? There must be a way to see it without the artifacts on a progressive monitor, other than going through Cinema Tools... No? It doesn't make sense that I wouldn't be able to do this. Patrick, you were saying newer screens can handle 3:2 and deal with it?. Will just ANY recent monitor (LCD, CRT, OLED, Plasma, Anti-Matter, whatever) do this through its composite input? I have a Dell 2407 with a slew of inputs, one being composite RCA. Can I get a non-jaggie, 29.97 viewing from this otherwise progressive monitor?
Thanks for potentially the last time

  • How to use Progressive video in aggregated file

I'm using Captivate 5 and have several .swf modules to publish along with their supporting video files (progressive download).
How can I package these into an executable or aggregated output so the videos play?  I can't load the videos into the aggregated file, therefore the videos don't play.
It would be great if there was a way to imbed these videos into Captivate, but I don't think that's possible and the company hasn't purchased Flash to use that as an option.
I also can't seem to get a large aggregated or executable file to run.  It just has the loader, and doesn't show anything else.
I can chunk it into thrids, but I'm just wondering if there's another way to publish this for use as one file, instead of 13 different modules.
Any ideas or suggestions?  Thank You!!!

What major and minor version of Captivate 5 are you on?
The Aggregator is designed to be a single standalone file output for several Captivate published projects.  It can output as either a single SWF or a single EXE or even a single PDF.
Yes there are issues with trying to encapsulate video files into this package.  You might be able to try hosting the videos as F4V format on a streaming host service and then viewing them on one of the slides in your project from inside the EXE.  That way the video doesn't have to be packaged with the course in the EXE.

  • Progressive video no worko :(

I've been absolutely struggling with this- and it's becoming annoying.
I just want to capture progressive scan video from a DV input. I've been putting up with Interlaced video for a while but that's no longer an option now that I use Shake to key many of my shots (the deinterlacing filter absolutely murders the edges on my objects)
Now, normally that wouldn't be a problem - you just go to Audio/Video Settings>Capture Presets Tab>Select DV NTSC 48 kHz>Edit>QuickTime Video Settings Box>Advanced>Compression Tab> Scan Mode: Progressive
but that doesn't work- at least not every time (and I have VERY obviously interlaced footage when it doesn't work). Are Easy Setups getting in the way? Is it a 50/50 chance of starting the capture on the beginning of a frame instead of the middle of an interlaced frame? It almost sounds superstitious to say it's chance, but I see no other way for this to be occurring. I've relaunched the program, created new projects with just that easy setup- I've gone to the capture window to change the preset manually, I've done pretty much anything I think would change something- it seems like FCP will capture progressive DV whenever it feels like it- because the setting never changed from progressive back on the presets I made.
Any help? this is getting ridiculous I can't be doing little tests to make sure a capture is actually recording progressively every time I want to capture progressive only video.

EDIT/REMINDER: The fixes I've attempted were done after the footage had already been captured- Ideally, I wouldn't have to use filters/field reorderings and whatnot to fix this after the fact, I'm still hoping to find a way for FCP to capture "progressively" on a normal basis. Right now it seems about the flip of a coin whether my capturing sessions will be progressive or interlaced.
A half second offset was my idea of an ideal fix and I found it's an easy thing to do in Shake- but there was still a lot of artifacting and traces of separately captured fields (even though they lined up)
I actually have a really good example for you this time- these two shots where taken of the same object (within a pixel or two) at seperate times, one when FCP decided to capture "progressively" and the other when FCP decided to capture "interlaced"
the spots are snow flakes, which are impossible to recreate- so disregard those. Besides that, the difference is obvious. As you can see, the fields are properly aligned in the offset version of the interlaced capture- so shapes are just as immaculate, But there are noticeable ugly HSV changes in a pattern reminiscent of interlacing. I ran the shot through an RGB contrast node to accentuate it.

  • Early start of progressive video?

    Using CS5 Master Collection.
I encoded a video into a 30mb FLV using AME out of PPro and then created a swf with Flash using a standard player skin to get the full-screen option that seems not to be available in the DW skins.  This all works fine locally when tested in an HTML page using the code provided by Flash.
When uploaded to the web server, there is a long delay whilst the whole video file downloads before replay starts.
Two years ago when last I did this I was using an earlier version of the software and seem to recall that there was a parameter to start replay much earlier than this. But I can't find it in CS5.
I've tried playerID.bufferTime = 10 in the AS3 code inside the SWF to no effect.
How can I persuade the video to start playing much more quickly without waiting for the full download to complete?
    Thanks for some enlightenment.

I'd say the problem is in the .flv... or perhaps it's a f4v (the flash version of an mp4).
there is a long delay whilst the whole video file downloads before replay starts.
This means that the file is not being progressively downloaded, so buffer time has no meaning or effect.
Your problem sounds just like the MOOV ATOM problem often experienced with QuickTime mp4 files. The "movie atom" index which carries the file size into is at the very end of the file, preventing progressive downloading. The solution for that issue is to swap the MA from the very back of the file to the front.

  • Options for making a progressive subclip from a progressive video?

We have flash files that are streamed using clip offset & duration parameters.
The flash files are later saved to DVD and played there as progressive media.
We hoped to use the same files and subclip parameters for streaming and the DVD.
...But subclips are not supported on progressive media.
Do you have suggestions on best approach?
    Options(?):
    1) Bite the bullet, chop the original (streamed) file(s) into different files for the DVD which make the play timing look the same in both play modes.
    2) Somehow fake streaming from the progressive file to make it look like a streamed file, so subclips will work.
    3) Subclass OSMF classes to calculate offset & stop point for progressive media playback (force subcliping). Any examples on this?
Also, is there a reason (besides resource efficiency) that subclips are not supported from progressive media?
    Thank you in advance!
    Follow-up
This link has an answer to my question of why no subclip support for progressive media
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2511596#2511596
We ended up adding a step to re-transcode the [streamed] video files into multiple smaller exact sized file(s) to enable the same viewing experience from DVD (Option #1)

Also try to output to FLV and embed it into your website (see this thread for some tips). H.264 is certainly also an option, but be aware that it still may cause viewing problems for some users, e.g. crash the browser. Since you are on CS4, you could also do this in Adobe Media Encoder, which will provide some more encoding options...
