Project clip vs event clip

Im new to editing and trying to get to grips with the basics, so I'm hoping someone can help.
If I select an Event clip to use in a project, bring it in, trim it down (and anything else I might do) - does that alter in any way the original Event clip?
Or is it the case that the Event clips are always retained as originals and what I'm effectively doing is working with a copy?
I'd love to understand before I make a costly error!
Many thanks
Bob
(Btw - I'm using iMovie 11)

You can move your events to an external drive, but you must do it in iMovie.
The external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
For new imports from your camera, you can import directly onto the external drive if you want from the import screen.
For existing events, in iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
Now you can hold the Command Key down while dragging the Event icon to the Disk icon in the Event Library List. If you drag rather than Command Drag, you will copy rather than move.
Another good way to move a project and all project assets to the external drive is the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA  command. First move your project to the destination drive by command dragging in the project library list. Then select the project and FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA. It will let you move or copy your Events, and will make copies of photos, music, etc so you have it all in one place.
If you do all this within iMovie, re-editing the project is easily doable.

  • How to tell the date of a source clip (from events) in a project

I am making a very long and complex project.
I am using events from IHD and EHD.
The project has tons of clips from tons of different events spanning over 10 years.
I want to add some still pics.  I want the still pics to be inserted around the same time the video was taken (i.e. my pics are sorted by date and my video clips in events are also sorted by date).
    Question is:
Is there a way to see the date of the clip being used in the Project???
(The events list the clip dates, but I have so many clips in the project, that I couldn't possibly find them all using the events view).
So, I want to be able to say, this 10second portioned clip in this project was taken on April 5, 2005 for example.
Can I do this some how??
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
Darn it.... I didn't realize this.
I put together a 20min project so far... it is composed of many many few second clips from probably over 100 different events spanning over 10 years.... now i want to add the still pics to it..... so I guess it is a little to late for this solution ;(.  I probably should have added the stills during the time I added the video clips (since it would be hard to go back to see what events the videos clips in the project came from).
I like to put all the video clips in first and then add the still pics.  Then add music last.
But your tip is good to know and thanks so much again!

  • Locating project clips in events

I shot one long shot of my grandaughter's play and then dragged portions of the clips, without marking them as favorites or with keywords, into a project interspersing them among photographs and stock images.  I would now like to relocate them in the event clip.  I know the portions of the clips used in iMovie have an orange line through them.  Is there anyway I can relocate the clips I used in the project back in the event clip?

Select the clip in the storyline and type Shift F.  The clip will be highlighted in the Event Browser (no matter which event it is in) and the region used in the storyline will be selected in the event browser.

  • My current project in the events library has gone into list mode. ie a single clip on the left, one above another, so showing only about 7 clips. how can I get it back into normal horizontal mode

That's about what it's supposed to look.
How do You want it to look ?
    a. You can change places by using this
    b. May be You changed this top right symbol of an hard disk ?
    c. or changed the number of frames to be viewed ?
    d. OR - it can (at least for me) be so that You think of how it looks in iPhoto. (To me a very common mistake)

  • Dragging movie clip from Event pane to Project pane

When I drag a movie clip from Event to Project the top part of the clip is cut off. On body pictures I am losing people's heads! The movie clips play perfectly in the Event panel, so I know they were imported correctly.

There are two things to look at.
First, what is the aspect ratio of your project, and is it the same as your camera is shooting?
If your camera is standard (4:3), set your project to 4:3. If your camera is wide-screen (16:9), set your project to 16:9. You can do this in FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES.
Second, if your project contains a mix of 16:9 and 4:3, that is OK. You just pick the aspect ratio that you prefer. Then on each clip, go into the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool and select FIT or CROP.
FIT will letterbox (black bars). CROP will cut off the top and bottom. You can decide which you prefer.

  • Imovie 11: When moving clips from event to project, the top of the video clip is cut off.

I'm working with a new project. When I add clips from an event to the project window, the top of the video clip is cut off.  Quite a bit of it is cut off.  It happens on every clip.  The aspect ratio is correct and I've set the video to fit in frame.  How can I fix this?  I would really appreciate any help.

You may have stabilization turned on in the project. On one of the clips, click on the small gear icon at the start of the clip and select Clip Adjustments. In the Inspector that opens, uncheck the box "Smooth Clip Motion" against Stabilization. If this fixes it for you, do the same for the other clips.
Also, it's a good idea to turn off certain preferences in iMovie>Preferences (an iMovie menu item). In the Browser tab uncheck the boxes for both "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed" and "Apply rolling shutter correction for clips that have been analyzed". See this picture:
The stabilization process causes a zoomed in effect on the video, as it has to "average" the pixels in order to smooth any shaky motion. You therefore lose a certain amount of the picture, depending on the extent of stabilization applied. Here's what iMovie Help states (in part) about this process:
"iMovie stabilizes video by analyzing the camera motion in the video and then moving the picture the opposite way to steady it onscreen. In this process, iMovie zooms in on the picture slightly. The amount of unstable motion in the clip determines how much zooming is necessary.
Zooming in crops out some of the picture, but you can fine-tune the level of stabilization to strike the right balance between keeping the video steady and retaining as much of the picture as possible."

  • Quality issue when moving clips from events to project

When I drags clips or parts of clips from events to my project, the quality drops significantly (blocking).
Original clip (H264 encoded SD video) is fine, when imported into imovie it is still fine when skimmed/viewed in the event but as soon as draged into the project, the quality is bad (when skimmed/viewed in the project) and blocking occurs, especially in dark parts of the video. Of course this bad quality remains on the exported video :-(((
Any idea where this might come from and how to overcome it ?
    Thx for your support

Apologies for bumping this again, but I'm getting the same issue and I'm wondering if it's the original HD files that are incompatible in imovie. It's odd that only a few of us are reporting it.
I'm capturing HD video in mov format (motion jpeg) from a panasonic FZ5 still camera. The footage has been imported via iphoto. It's 30fps - not the native uk frame rate - but I can't change this on the camara. When I edit in imovie, I get the same massive drop in quality as soon as I move an event to the timeline. Blocking especially on blocks of colour. This happens on playback from the timeline within imovie and on export. I've tried creating a project in both pal format and ntsc in case the frame rate is the issue. No joy. In Final cut the problem seems not to exist, but I'd prefer to manage these very simple home movies in imovie.
I'm now wondering whether to switch to a different still camera like the newer panasonics or sony hx5 as these capture in avchd (presumably 25/50 fps if sold in uk) and might get over the problem. any thoughts?

  • Why the drag and drop of clips from events browser to project browser isn't working any more

My iMovie was working fine, but suddenly I'm not able any more to drag and drop select parts of a clip from event browser to the project browser. I read other people got this issue. Is there a solution? Thanks a lot

I had the same problem. Fixed it by repairing disk permissions with disk utility.

I finished my project and have it on DVD and Bluray. Now I want to free up disk space by deleting everything that had to do with the project including event clips.  Does 'moving to trash' accomplish that?

    Hi eneighbor
Yes, selecting "move to trash" from within FCPX will free up disk space.
I "Move Project To Trash" first.
Then "Move Event To Trash" secondly.
To totally free up disk space, you will of course need to empty out your trash as you would per any other unwanted file you've sent to the trash can.

  • HT1026 Moved iMovie files to an external HD- Now have a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles.

I have foolishly moved my files to an external HD without following this advice. Now I'm left with a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles. Am I seriously going to have to start again or can I move them back somehow? They are from a variety of events and having tried moving some of them back into the imovie events folders using finder, I'm having no luck. Any help?!?

The other thread I found is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1908460&tstart=15
I had some initial success after moving my projects and events on to the ext drive. iMovie reconnected the missing source clips and all of my projects played fine, with music and video intact. Hooray!
However I opened iMovie last night only to discover the source clips missing again. The music and photo stills are fine, it's just the iPhoto video. When I pass the cursor over the ! it tells me it is looking for the files on my HD even though they no longer exist there as I chose the MOVE option, not the COPY.
    Agh!
I also tried the consolidate media option which tells me not all of the clips and events are on my ext drive (funny that they were yesterday) but when I click the option to move them, nothing happens.
Do you still have a copy of the events on your ext drive? Can you try copying them over again?

  • Combining clips in Events

    Hi,
I´ve captured several VHS tapes onto iMovie´09, and now have long Events of nearly 180 minutes. As I take out bad parts in the evens (I use "Reject selection") I end up having many, many clips in my Events. Then when I want to crop them I all I have to do it separately for all clips in each Event. Also, when making a project of an Event, I have to separately move all clips to the project. The clips stay separate also in the project windows, which makes editing also there difficult.
Any way of combining the clips in each Event to one big clip?

Yeah I have the same problem since some of our tapes are so old... To put them all in the project, select the event, hit command a, and that should select them all so you can move them in. However, I can't figure out how to combine them in the project.

  • IMovie 7.1.4 project can't find clip! exclamation points everywhere!

My iMovie 7.1.4 project can't find clip! exclamation points everywhere!
I think I may have changed the name of the clip, since (long story) I had exported the finished version and thought I was done.. but that had to be deleted to make room for something in an emergency. So of course, now that I want to re-export the project, it can't find the clip.
There are yellow exclamation points on every single piece in the project (hundreds) that are all supposed to refer to one hour-long clip. The clip IS in the event library. I can see it and watch it.
How can I tell the project how to search for the clip if it now has a different name? It's RIGHT THERE! This is so frustrating. Of course I can't guess the original super long crazy clip-name.
Every music/video program on Earth allows you to search for "missing" clips. This seems really lame.
    Deleting cache.plist didn't help.
Please help! I spent many hours editing, and cannot fathom re-doing this one.

I had the same thing happen. Opened iMovie and all my events were there, but there was a blank "My Project" in the project pane. Even if I double-click the project file that I'm trying to see, it doesn't show up. Were you able to resolve it on your system?
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Moving clips between events crashes FCPX every time...

I'm trying to move clips from one event to another.  I'm duplicating the clip first, and then I try to drag the duplicate of the clip to another event.  Every time I do this, FCPX crashes.
Is this the right way to move clips?  If not, how do I properly move clips from one event to another?  What could be causing FCPX to crash every time?  (I've tried different clips in different projects, and it still always crashes.)

    Hi Russ--
Yes, I tried his suggestion to use Organize Event.  I don't think it helped.
I have a feeling your second question is probably just as if not more relevant.  I tend to have almost everything in one project coming from the event it is associated with.  But then I have some credits or titles or something that might be in another event.  I wanted to bring them into the associated event to keep everything organized well.
But it seems like maybe what I should do is give up on that and wait to do anything like this until the project is finished and I'm ready to move it.  I guess maybe I could then use the option to move the project and referenced events when I move the finished project?  But the other event referenced is also referenced by other projects, so I don't know if that is a good idea.
Or maybe I should be using File> Consolidate Project Media...? But I don't know exactly what effect that would have.
I had just decided that it seemed like something I could do manually, and, when that didn't work, I got hung up on why it wouldn't work that way.  I wanted to know why it wouldn't work that way, and now I've kind of given up on figuring that out in favor of continuing work on the projects.

  • I have movies, events, clips, etc. scattered over three macs, and would like to consolidate them in one place, hopefully in ONE library on an external HD.  How, please!

I have movies, events, clips, etc. scattered over three macs, and would like to consolidate them in one place, hopefully in ONE library on an external HD.  How, please!

Try forcing iPhoto to load the Library on the External Hard drive by launching it while holding down the Option key. Choose the Library on the External HD, and quit iPhoto, see if iMovie can see the Library with the iPhoto Videos contained inside.
