Project in Imovie 9 Only plays back still frames, wont play video

Project in Imovie 9 Only plays back still frames
I can see all the video clips but screen just goes black while going over the video. The video is still in the computer and has not been moved around.
Also if i play the imported video on the "Event" board it plays over it with no information coming back to the computer. Like if the files were offline.
any help?

Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
Macintosh HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named.
com.apple.iMovie.plist
com.apple.iMovie3.plist
com.apple.iMovie7.plist
com.apple.iMovie8.plist
and find com.apple.iApps.plist - trash this too
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file/s out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
• Screen must be set to Million-colors
• Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
• Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
This You do by
_ close iPhoto
_ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
• iMovie updated ?
• QuickTime updated ?
• Mac OS version ?
• Program miss-match. iMovie 4 - will not work under Leopard
• Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
• Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (will work under Leopard and Snow-Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.1.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (will work under Leopard and Snow-Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iMovie’09 v. 8.0.6, Mac OS X.5.8 AND QuickTime 7.6.4 - is OK (will work under Leopard and Snow-Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

  • When playing back stills, how do I turn off the G..D...n zoom?

When playing back stills in imovie, how do I turn off the G..D...n zoom? I just want it to show stills, STILL, zoom-effects do not go well with a serie of meditative fotos of sculptures.... thank you. Anyone?

    Hi
    It's called Ken-Burns effect.
Click on one photo in Project.
Then You see a small cogg wheel like symbol
    - click on it and a menu opens where at bottom You can
    - select Crop/Ken-Burns/Rotation - select it
Now in Viewer/Canvas at top set Size (Adjusted) from Adjust/Crop/Ken Burns menu - now the picture will show in full and no zoom.
As You see - there is a linguistic barrier when not having an English version of iM.

  • When I imported my mp4 video to imovies, it only shows the 1st frame of the video and not the rest...

When I imported an mp4 video to imovies, it only imported the 1st frame of the video - all thumbnails only showed the 1st frame.

It sounds like you have hidden the menu bar, for details of how to restore it see the [[menu bar is missing]] article. This article may also help - [[Back and forward or other toolbar items are missing]]

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • Print Out Still Frames From HD Video

I am importing HD video into iMovie 08. I have made a few still frames from the video for printing. I could not export them to iPhoto or Photoshop Elements 2.
How can I make HD video prints? Do I need new software?

I have made a few still frames from the video for printing. I could not export them to iPhoto or Photoshop Elements 2.
Select the "still frame" sequence and use the "Reveal in Finder" option to take you to the saved "still image" in the named_Project package. If you then double-click the image, it will open in Preview. Using Preview, you can print the image or save it to any of the available image formats in any "visible" location for later access by whatever graphic application you wish to use.

  • How do I get audio to play back while I'm capturing video?

I'm looking to add an audio file to my project and have it play back while I'm capturing video from my MacBook's camera. That way I won't have to worry about lining up the audio and video, everything will be in sync because I recorded the video that way. In the video I will be playing guitar to the audio file, so the audio and video need to be lined up perfectly.
Is this possible? Should I go about doing it another way?
    Thanks

    Hi there
Look in the Timeline. Specifically the area where the names appear on the left side. Now look at the bottom. There you should see a small speaker icon. My guess is that you have clicked it to mute it. Jumps right out and literally SCREAMS it's muted, no?
Please report that as an issue to Adobe. Ask for a clearer indication!

  • Any way to capture a still frame as an image in Imovie HD? "Create Still Frame" just gives me short MOV files

I'm trying to export a still from a project I'm working on so I can add some things to it in photoshop before importing it back in to the imovie project.
It's from the end of a clip I have. I know I could just use grab and take a screen capture but the quality would be awful.
Imovie HD has this feature, "Create Still Frame" and when I google this problem all the answers tell me to use that.
HOWEVER: When I do use Create Still Frame, instead of giving me a JPG I can use or another image format, it creates a short 5 second .mov clip of the still. If I wanted it in movie format I'd just use the original clip, what I need is an image format!
There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere to change what type of still frame format it uses. There must be a way to do this however, all the answers I've found say it should be JPG and I should be able to locate it then in the project package - what am I doing wrong?

The shortest way to accomplish this is to download a copy of MPEG Streamclip as relayed by longtime iMovie Discussion Group participant AppleMan1958
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15808352#15808352
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.

  • CS4: Hangs When Playing Back Stills

    Can anyone reproduce this:
Sequence is AVCHD, 720p... I've inserted a couple of pictures from my digital camera along with a couple of short movie clips (camera: Panasonic DMC-FT1)...
After inserting a couple of stills into the sequence, when playing back those stills I can't stop playback until playhead has either reached one of the movie clips of end of sequence.
Is this a bug of the current version (version 4.2.1)?

I have sporadically seen a very similar problem with stills in Premiere
CS4 when editing both mini DV footage and P2 footage.  It seems to
be related to project complexity and not to a particular type of footage.
It seems to happen more often if I have a lot of large stills that are scaled
and panned as opposed to stills that are exactly frame sized.
When the problem happens, killing Premiere and restarting usually
seems to work ok, so it is not clear what triggers the bug.
I know nothing about the internal architecture of Premiere but it is
clear that there are multiple threads at work when playing from the
timeline and I am guessing that something about playing a lot
    of stills causes the thread
that is responsible for listening to the user to "block" forever (wait for
some event that never will happen).  So the player thread(s) keep on
playing but you can't stop them.  Its unfortunately an all too common
type of bug in complex software and goes by the colorful name of
    "deadly embrace" or deadlock.
I have mostly avoided this problem by preparing sequences of stills
in separate projects and importing them into a single final project
near the end of my editing process so as to mimimize the exposure
to situations likely to cause the problem.

  • Importing pre-made menus- still frame or moving video?

I am new to DVD Studio Pro and I recently authored a DVD that required importing a pre-made menu. The file was a psd and as 640 X 480 in size and about 180 dpi. The menu showed up in my asset window as a Quicktime picture. My question is did DVD SPro somehow convert the still image menu into a moving video file? I ask this because of two reasons...1) the menu plays back as though it's "playing" -when you click the menu's play button, the menu looks for a split second as though it pauses in much the same way a moving video image would look when you "pause it. 2.) The menu does not appear sharp- the text is not crisp as you would expect a still frame to be.
Did I import the menu wrong? I imported it as an asset. I tried to import as a template but the file is "grey" in the import box and you cannot bring it in this way. Also why did it convert the psd (photoshop file) into a quicktime picture?
    Thanks!

Menus (even still menus) are moving video. DVDSP will encode them to MPEG2 for the duration of your menu's loop.
Try importing a still of 720x534 (square) pixels, not the size you used, for a 4:3 NTSC menu. DVDSP will have less scaling to do, and this might result in a sharper picture.

  • When I play back newly burned disk the video is cut off on each side of the screen. It shows the entire display area in the pic window before i burn it.How can i fix this?

    Idvd
when i play back the newly burned disc, the image on the tv set is cut off on each side.( there is still room on each side of the tv set for the image to show but it is as if the movie was cut about 2-3 inches off on each side)  but not when i play it back on my computer?? Why is this and what can I do to fix it?

Also the tv set has wide and normal modes this does not change the loss of size. (I guess you can say it is cropped.)

  • Can you turn a still frame of a video into a picture?

My son had the video function on when we thought he was taking photos. Is there a way to take a still shot from that video and turn it into a picture?

Not with iPhoto - you can Using iMovie I believe or Quick Time Pro

  • Why can't I play back podcasts like I play back songs?

Not sure if this is the right forum (posting questions seems to have changed for the worse) but no one seems to be able to answer this question! Can I play back individual podcast downloads one after the other without having to go back to the main menu everytime? I play back my podcasts in the car and it gets dangerous everytime I want to move to the next podcast. Why isn't there a setting in Preferences to fix this? It seems so basic! Is there a workaround or do we have to wait for iTunes 7?

Instead of the podcast menu, go through Music -> Genres -> Podcast -> All -> pick your podcast show (album). Most podcasts are tagged such that they will play in order, oldest to newest, when started from this route. <hr width="90%" align="left">

  • Timeline playing back very choppy over multiformat video.

    Hi Guys,
I am editing some behind the scenes footage for a movie our studio is making. A lot of the media has come from different sources. Some red, some mpeg4 etc. The Mac i am using is a Quad Core Mac Pro... technically it should be powerful enough to play over all these fine. But even when everything is rendered, it is very choppy. So much so, that to check my audio is in synch for some of the action shots, i have to export it as a Quicktime and play it back and check it that way.
Now i have tried RT in unlimited and safe... but it still happens. Does anyone have any possible solutions at all?
Any help would be much appreciated,
    thanks in advance.

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime you are using.

  • Best settings for taking still frame pictures from video?

My project file has been converted to .avi and uses mp3 sound.
I like to take still shots from the action portions of the video,
but of the three options under frame hold: (hold on, deinterlace, and hold filters) which are the best to use?
are there other settings i should use when trying to unblur these images?
ps i searched the entire forum for a quick topic and came up empty.
    Thanks!!!

Just pause your timeline on the frame you want and click the 'Freeze Frame' icon.
Select Export from the dialog box that shows. You now have your typical file save box - select Settings.
Now use the drop down on 'File Type' and pick your preferred format. For a lossless image use BMP or TIFF.
    Cheers,
    Neale
