Project Online with an existing SharePoint Online tenant

Hi, As I understand Project Online includes his own SharePoint Online infrastructure, my customer needs evidence on if they implement Project Online this service will not interact with an existing site information on very customized SharePoint online intranet,
any information reference will be great.

PWA is special site collection and like every site collection in SharePoint it is independent of other site collections.
You can bring up the SharePoint admin center and show various site collections to give him the peace of mind he needed.

Firstly, I do believe I have seen and heard that we can create upto 3 instances of Project Online with a single tenant. Is this correct?

First of all, since last week, Project Online has been scaled up to 7 instances instead of 3. See reference
here.
Then for a migrator tool, I'm not pretty sure but I remember that Fluent Pro proposes a Project Online
migrator tool.

Use of Department field in project online

Hi All,
In project server, we have the provision to use the field Department to have some control on the data visibility to a user, right?
Is this feature available for project online in Sharepoint permission mode? Can I get some article on this?
Is there any article/document which gives details of impact/areas affected when permission mode is converted from sharepoint permission mode to project server permission for project online?

Rose,
The Departments field is NOT a security feature. It is purely a "Visbility" feature. So regardless of SharePoint Permission mode or Project Server Permission mode, you can use the Departments field, and one does not have an impact on the other.

Project Online Workflow not moving forward after approval

I'm building a custom workflow for a Project Online tenant using SD2013 but something is not working with approvals.
In SD I create the workflow with very simple actions:
1. Wait for submit
2. Create approval task
3. In stage transition, if task ended with "Approved", move to the next stage, if not, go to "Cancelled" step
Everything works fine until the approval. I see the task, approve it but then nothing happens. The task appears as "Completed" and "Approved" but the workflow just stays there.
I had this very same behavior on a couple of deployments in the past with Project Server 2010 in Spanish.
The tenant created the Project Web App in Spanish as well. Could this be the cause? How can I correct it?

I am also having the same issue.
The task appears in the list, I approve it, then nothing happens. No error, no feedback, no history list log (I put in a log statement right after the approval task, it never runs), the workflow status page still remains as "Started".
Any ideas?
If online is as slow as processing approval actions overnight, then it is simply unusable.

Changing Project Online Defaults

Hi
I have a project online tenant with 3 PWAs provisioned. I have two questions here with respect to Project Online, and how to change some default settings:
When a user logs in to Office 365 account, the Projects link on top bar redirects to the 1st PWA. I need to change the default URL, so projects link redirects to the 3rd PWA. Is this possible?
I have changed the default currency from USD to SAR, but the symbol against cost figures is now displayed in Arabic (Default symbol). We need the cost unit to be SAR, and also the symbol to be displayed as SAR instead of being displayed in Arabic. Is there
a way to change default symbol as well?

Hi Atul,
Unfortunately it is not possible currently to change the redirect from the 1st default PWA site.
Also the default symbol for the currency is pulled from .NET based on the select and cannot be changed. Same for USD - where $ is displayed.

Project Online Task Sync with Exchange Online

When we go to Tasks in Project Online and try to set up a syn with outlook, we get below error:

Importing existing project to Project Online

Hello, my company recently purchased Project Online to add to our existing Office 365 environment.
From the Project Web App home page, I would like to use the Create or Import projects tile to add an existing .mpp project file that I have uploaded to my SkyDrive to Project Online, and manage this project from the Project Web app.
However, I cannot figure out how to do this or if it is even possible. The tile itself says "Create new or import from Sharepoint sites and project files.". To import an existing project you're then referred to this site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-server-help/more-ways-to-create-or-import-projects-HA102923810.aspx.
On that site the only listed ways of importing an existing project are to import a Sharepoint task list (not what I want) or by connecting your local Project Pro to Project Online and publishing the project.
Importing or uploading an existing project file directly to Project Online would seem to be a fundamental basic usage of Project Online. Do I really need to also purchase Project Professional in order to import existing project files to Project Online?

Project Online cannot read mpp files, hence the reason for requiring Project Professional 2013 if you want to import these into Project Online - even if you only want to manage them via Project Web App from then on.
If you've not got Project 2013 Pro, you could cut and paste the existing task list from Project into a SharePoint list, and create the project from there.
The way forward will depend on the complexity of your schedules, remember that PWA does not have all of the capability of MS Project 2013

Authentication using CSOM with Project Online

How are we to connect to Project Online with CSOM? All the SDK articles do not include any type of authentication. So if we are trying to use the CSOM to list out projects, and I try to create a credentials object and pass that to the ProjectContext.Credentials,
how would this work with the Project Online solution?
If I try to use the standard network credentials, I get "(403) Forbidden" when I pass in my onmicrosoft.com account and password for credentials. I am the admin on my instance.
So a little help on understanding how to connect remotely to Project Online via CSOM would be great.
Here is a sample PowerShell script I am using. Same result in C# too:

Project Online is a part of SharePoint. Programmatically accessing Project Online uses the procedures that are described in the Office and SharePoint app development SDK; see
Build apps for SharePoint. PowerShell can be used to administer Project Server 2013 (Windows
PowerShell cmdlets for Project Server 2013); I don't know of a way that PowerShell could be used with the CSOM for Project Online.

The reason for this behavior was the following:<o:p></o:p>
The currency of the PWA settings have been changed.<o:p></o:p>
Looking into the queue of the EPT we found the following hint:<o:p></o:p>

ProjectCurrencyConflict (23001). Details: id='23001' name='ProjectCurrencyConflict' uid='f1850fb3-c53c-e411-9a1e-00155d58393b'.<o:p></o:p>
After changing back to settings "Allow projects to be published in various currencies" the workflow works fine.<o:p></o:p>
Nevertheless this issue is not clear for us why it appears after a currency change in the workflow. Maybe a sleeping bug?<o:p></o:p>

Project working with Project Online in Office 365

Hello,
My question is related to project working and using Project Online to track projects.
* Can I use a single "Project Online with Project Pro for Office 365" subscription for tracking and creating reports about all project sites and their tasks in Office 365?
Meaning, if we have multiple projects designed in Project Pro and then uploaded directly to Office 365, can we gather the task, resource and progress information from these projects (created directly to Office 365) in a Project Online overview? One person
using Project Online to oversee multiple projects, others uploading their projects and changing task information in Office 365 to a SharePoint site with Project Pro and Office 365 subscriptions.
We want to have one person with Project Online overseeing the progress and create reports on all projects that have been uploaded to Office 365 (Project Portfolio Management), but not creating new projects. Is this possible with just one Project Online subscription?
The other users would all have an Office 365 Enterprise 3/4 subscription for accessing Office 365, collaborating and updating their tasks. Project managers would have a Project Pro subscription for creating and uploading projects to Office 365.

Your question is slightly confusing, so let me try and say it this way:
1) Your PMs (multiple) will use Project Pro, to create and publish plans to Project Online
2) You will have one user who will 'administer' Project Online and create reports etc.,
3) You will not have any other users access Project Online
4) I am not sure about you 'SharePoint' comment--so excluding this.
The problem is that, Project Pro+Office 365 does not necessarily give you access to Project Online. This combination is more useful when you are using just Project Pro or using project Pro to sync plans with Task lists on SharePoint Site. Plans that are
uploaded this way will NOT appear in Project Online. So, the person who has the Project Online license will not have any data to report on.
Having said that, here are few options:
1) Stick with Project Pro +Office 365. Team Members can access "Task" lists in SharePoint Sites. In this scenario, Reporting will be somewhat complex, because each site is its own, and you might have to customize to be able to report across multiple sites.
2) If you want an easier Project Portfolio Management, Project Online is better. However, in this case, your PMs need to get Project Online with
Project Pro for Office 365 which will allow them to publish plans to Project Online. Then your user with project Online license can generate reports for the portfolio easily. In this scenario, if you want team members to be able to submit timesheets,
work with documents etc., you might want to look into getting the Project Lite for them (http://blogs.office.com/2014/03/31/project-lite-may-1st/)

You are talking about multiple things in your question, so let me try and clarify the question.
1) Office 365 +SP 2013 is not Project Server. Project Server is a totally separate application built on SharePoint. And in Office 365, Project Server is offered as Project Online, which is an additional license you need to purchase.
2) With that settled, I will assume you are talking about Project Stand-alone with SharePoint. As far as I know, this "Sync" functionality was only available starting Project 2010, so I am guessing using Project 2007 will not work.
3) That pretty much leaves us with Manually uploading Project (.mpp) files into SharePoint, just like any other document, and if this is what you want, then it should work with no issues.

Yes you can, I would use the ProjectData API if you are not bothered about security (accessing all projects etc.) or if you want the data returned to be accessed controlled use the ProjectServer API. Examples below:

Sync Project Online Security Group to SharePoint Security Groups

Hi,
Is there any way to sync prject server security group(Custom) into SharePoint Security Groups.
My scenario is: I created a document library, I want to apply project server security on it, based on project server security groups, for that currently I created a custom group in sharepoint and manualy added the users into that group. That doesn't looks
good, because if my project online group will change, than manually I have to change sharepoint group too. So what I want is, that sharepoint group is automatically synced with project online group.
Or is there any other way to assign project online security in document library?

No there is no workaround other then creating a group on Office 365 server.

Custom fields with the same name in Project Online

Today I discovered something interesting when creating custom fields in Project Online.
I usually create a certain set of custom fields that are useful to have on both the project and the task level. An example of these is Reportable, which I use to determine which tasks to roll up into reports and also which projects overall to report on.
So I created a project level custom field called Reportable. No problem.
I then created a custom field on the task level called Reportable. And the computer said no!
I then learned that although you could do this in Project Server 2013, you can't in Project Online. You can't have duplicate custom field names, even if they are of different types.
This has led me to use a naming standard, such as Reportable Task and Reportable Project. But I really don't like that as codes are for computers, not us humans. So I hope this changes in the future, but for now you just need to think about how you approach
the fields.

Just made a test on a Project 2013 instance on-premise and I cannot create a task ECF and a project ECF with the same name. The same test on a Online instance returns the same result: the ECF names must be unique whatever the entity is.
