Project Overheads

Dear experts,
what should i do "set up & tranactions" so that i can apply the overheads costs on my project
i am in oil & gas company and they r using the Project System module just to manage the CAPEX costs/budget of the concessions, so the project is comprises only WBS elements without networks & activities
i created the project, budgeted, released and post actual costs "GR for materials" to the project
when i run the transaction CJI3 i found only the actual costs without the overheads...  WHY??
Note: there is no project stock
         i assigned a costing sheet & overhead key to the WBS elements

Overhead Calculation is based on Costing sheet you maintained.
Calculation of overhead is done using the Base you define. So, when you run overhead calculation cj44 it will pick the cost element you maintained in costing sheet base for calculation of overhead.
so check your costing sheet configuration before you run overhead calculation.

  • Single project definition (Investment + Overhead)?

    Hi  PS gurus,
    I have a business requirement, single project can be having both investment & overhead, meaning, in the project some costs have to be settled to final asset (capitalisation) and some costs are to be settled to cost centre (revenue expenditure).
    please let us know how i can proceed.
    Currently, we are creating investment project & overhead project separately using investment profile & overhead profile respectively.
    Thank you in advance,
    Srihari

    Created project definition using invesment profile  through CJ01 and wbs elements 3 inserted, viz
    WBS element-0 -   Dummy -
    Level 1
    WBS element 1 -   Investment measure -
    Level 2
    WBS element 2 -   Overhead                 -
    Level 2
    Networks created through CN21
    Network1 assigned to WBS element 1 -PR/PO created / MIGO/ML81n carried out then MIRO
    Network2 assigned to WBS element 2 -PR/PO created /MIGO/ML81n carried out then MIRO
    CJ88 - Settlement
    WBS element 1 - costs moved from NW to WBS elements to AUC - capitalized by creating settlement rule on final asset
    WBS element 2-  costs moved from NW to WBS element, create settlement rule on Cost Centre
    while creating WBS elements, u have to be careful in ensure the WBS element 2 does not investment profile, check all control tabs in WBS & NW.
    The above process applied for Project with Investment + Overhead Expenditure.
    Thanks

  • Relation between AA & ps

    hi experts,
    can anybody explain what is the relation between asset accounting and project systems modules? why do we implement project system module? what is the use?
    thanks & regards
    jay jay

    Hi Jay,
    Both large scale projects, such as building a factory, and small-scale projects, such as organizing a trade fair, require precise planning of the many detailed activities involved. The project manager has the job of ensuring that the project is executed efficiently, on time, and within budget - which he or she achieves by ensuring that the required resources and funds are available as and when needed.
    Projects are generally part of the internal processes of a company. To be able to control all tasks in project execution, you need an organizational form that is specific to the project and which is shared by all departments involved. Before you can carry out a project in its entirety, the project goals must be precisely described and the project activities to be carried out must be structured. A clear, unambiguous project structure is the basis for successful project planning, monitoring, and control.
    You structure your project per the following points of view:
    By structures, using a work breakdown structure (WBS)
    By process, using individual activities (work packages)
    Project managers usually distinguish between two types of project:
    Externally financed projects
    Customer projects
    Internally financed projects
    Overhead cost projects
    Capital investment projects
    The common  understanding between the PS and AA is that an asset is created once a project is completed successfully.
    The high degree of integration between the Project System (PS) and other R/3 application components means that you can plan, execute, and account for projects as part of your normal commercial procedures. This means the Project System has constant access to data in all the departments involved in the project.
    Hope this helps.
    Rgds

  • Plan Overhead Calculation for Project Definition

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement to calculate the Plan Overhead for the Project Def. (CJ46, CJ47).
    I have tried using BDC for CJ46 and CJ47 but Overhead cost is not reflecting in COSS table.
    I also tried using program RKAZCJ47 ( using SUBMIT statement ), which executes successfully and overhead cost is also calculated and can be verified thru entries in COSS table, but it displays a log which I am not able to bypass in background.
    I do not want to show this log to user.
    Helpp..

    Hi,
    In my development I need to call this program to calculate the plan overhead. So I used SUBMIT statement to execute this program and overhead is calculated and stored in COSS table. but this program displays the log using ALV and SPLITTER control after calculation which is displayed to user. I want to supress this log.
    This processing should execute in background without displaying any log.
    this submit call is written in enhancement for CJ40 which executes after user saves the cost planning

  • Overhead on projects

    Hi All,
    have couple of questions regarding overhead and material costs postings to projects.
    1.Where did you assigned cost sheet?to WBS or Network?please help me.
    2.Where do you post your materials costs?to network or WBS?
    3.where do you settle production order on project? to WBS or to Network?
    any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Anusha

    Hi,
    Costing sheet can be assigned to wbs elements directly in contolling tab or it can be maintained in project profile. So whenever you select your project profile at the time of project creation, it will get selected automatically.
    Materials cant be directly assigned to WBS...they are linked to NWA and NWA linked to wbs elements. whenever you raise PR that will have to convert into PO. And aginst that PO..GR/IR would happen.
    In case of Production Order, you can maintain settlement rule...on the basis of settlement profile..and make wbs element as receiver.

  • Need a way to Highlight where I tap my iPad as I project onto overhead screen

    I'll be projecting my iPad/iPhone onto a screen via VGA cable as I teach seniors how to use the device.
    I need an app or some way to "call out"/highlight where I am tapping on the device as I explain.
    Any suggestions?

    Sorry but I do not know of any way around your problem - apps are fine but I do not think it will be possible to get your books until you can eventually sync with iTunes on your own PC.
    Hope other members may know differently - and very best wishes and good luck where you are.

  • Objects in symbols disappearing after closing/reopening project-HELP!!!

    I am a college student working in flash CS5 and am in the middle of an animation project where i am creating a walking human figure using armatures.
    I began the project on the school computers, everything working fine. saved project to several places, including flash drive and computer's thaw space
    brought project home to continue working on my macbook. opened project and figures animated arms and legs (which were perfect on school comp) are completely missing. The symbol names are still in the library, but the objects themselves look like they've been deleted. they are nowhere to be found.
    This has happened every single time I close flash and reopen it, whether on the same or a different computer.
    I have had to recreate the whole project from scratch 4 times now because of this.
    I came in early to class to work on the project more, and lo and behold, it opened with all the arms and legs (the ones i had redone for the 4th time, from the most recent work session on my laptop). I continued working on the project, all going great, but then another class came in and i had to change computers.
    I saved in multiple places again, flash drive, thawspace, etc. and moved to another computer. Opened project from my flash drive, and the arms and legs are all missing again. i just have a floating head and torso, and the project is due in an hour. There's no way I can recreate all the drawings and armatures and animations from scratch a 5th time in just an hour.
    Here is any additional info that might help:
    both school and home computers are running Flash CS5
    began project on school computer using several flash files:
         1st file was simply to draw the pieces of the figure.
         2nd file i imported pieces from file 1 into library to begin animating in file 2.
         (once the objects were imported into file 2's library, file 1 should not affect them right?)
    I continued to improve and refine and eventually animate body parts in file 2, saving continually.
    As long as project is not closed, everything works perfectly. Once project is closed and reopened (even on same computer) armatured objects disappear.
    Their symbol names (placeholders) still appear in the library, but when you select them and see the overhead preview or enter symbol editing mode, it shows a blank screen.
    ******IMPORTANT******
    organization of files is this, in descending order from outtermost to innermost symbols
    1. mc_model-------------a movie clip of the entire figure, containing all the figures individual animated parts as separate symbols
    2. gs_leg------------------a graphic symbol containing one keyframe extending 40 frames, simply a placeholder for the armatured leg in the nested symbol
    3. gs_legArmature-----another graphic symbol containing the original drawing of the leg, also the leg's armature and animation, lasting 40 frames.
    NOW here's the thing.....when you enter into all of these symbols (mc_model>gs_leg>gslegArmature) and you are on the deepest level of the leg which contains the armature, once the project has been closed and reopened, the ARMATURE IS STILL THERE. The poses are still recorded in the timeline, the armature bones or connections or whatever the name for them is are still there, just the actual leg is gone. Just the drawing of the leg.
    I will try to attach a screenshot so you can see what I'm talking about

    <img src="http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm150/haleymariemackenzie/Picture2.png">
    Hopefully that worked......
    Any help is appreciated. It is too late to save my project, but I want to get to the bottom of this so I can at least avoid it in the future.
    Thank you

    We are checking the cursor status from v$open_cursors. As you said it may be cached cursors.
    We have find out one more thing in connection pooling setting in Tomcat.
    It is having the below setting :
    connectionCacheProperties="(InitialLimit=2, MinLimit=2, MaxLimit=1024, MaxStatementsLimit=50, ConnectionWaitTimeout=10, InactivityTimeout=300, PropertyCheckInterval=600)"
    connectionCachingEnabled="true"
    If we are changing the value as follows , then the database is not showing any open cursors or even inactive connections.
    connectionCachingEnabled="false"
    But we cannot change this to false because of some other reasons .
    Can anybody explain why it is happening. Is there any other way around ?

  • Project System VS IM-PS

    Dear All
    can anyone explain in which business procees why & where we go for IM with an example & also what was benifits if we go for IM-PS over we use only PS. as per my knowledge IM was use Capital investments, such as the acquisition of fixed assets as the result of-house production or purchase, Investments in research and development, Projects that fall primarily under overhead, such as continuing education of employees or establishing new markets.
    Regards

    As you have poinnted out rightly one use is for hte asset actuisition . But aling with asset acquitison, Normally you plan estimated cost for that budget via dummy project or previous project experience. This  project cost plant can roll up at the IM postion level. Than based on it you can give budget at IM level & distribute that budget at Project ( measure )level.
    In this is IM - PS helps to organization level  & Project cost planning & Budgeting  for hte acquision of Asset.

  • A tale of a Berkeley DB project: Success and future developements

    The site http://www.electre.com is an on-line catalog of all published French books (close to 1 million of them), from the 1970’s to today, with pricing and availability information for professional users.
    The entire book database and search engine was developed with Berkeley DB. The site runs relatively problem free, and owes much to the stability and quality of the Berkeley DB source code. Moreover, the software is sold as an intranet version and runs on remote configurations that are out of our direct control. And yet, we don’t get much problem reports from these remote sites.
    Development started in 2002. Using Berkeley DB was my decision. It was, with hindsight, a very good decision, but it would be hypocritical to affirm I knew all along it would work out so well. It was partly a gamble, and partly a calculated risk. I am not ashamed to confess that when I finally made the decision to go with Berkeley DB, there were some key areas in the technical design I had no clue how to tackle. Needless to say, any flaws that remain in this area are due to lack of knowledge and lack of foresight on my part, not because of some flaw in Berkeley DB.
    What convinced me 4 years ago to “go for it” was Sleepycat’s no-nonsense approach to support from guys like Michael Cahill, Keith Bostic, John Merrells, Dave Seglau, Michael Ubell, Liz Pennel and others. Support was sending a message to [email protected]. Replies were never more than a couple of days away (including time zone differences). There was always something comforting when you read a reply from someone who says he “owns your problem” (especially when you also saw that someone’s name in the source code <g>). The majority of support questions were asked during evaluation and product development, before even a single dime was paid to Sleepycat. (Now that we sell the product as a closed source Intranet solution, we gladly pay the required license fees, of course). The fact that the project development went so well was in no small part thanks to the competence and reliability of the people I communicated with. I never expressed my thanks, so now is as good a time as any to do so. Thanks, guys (and gals).
    When Sleepycat was bought by Oracle, it was rumored that the goal was ultimately “to kill the product”. I thought that was ridiculous and an exaggeration by some paranoid people (especially from the MySQL-camp). I understand that Oracle is a big company, and that things are done differently now. Besides, how do you “kill” a product? I didn’t know until I hit my first support question “post-Sleepycat”. So now I do: you kill a product not directly, but, but by a process of what I call “incremental discouragement”. It’s a subtle, 3-pronged approach:
    1)     Erect bureaucratic barriers between competent people and your customers. No more [email protected], but a slow and unwieldy web site and a support procedure hiding behind numbers and requiring a 2 hour training session. I’m not sure how I’m going to motivate to management a 2 hour training session for a product we’ve been using for the past 4 years, and which I now master sufficiently to reduce my support requests to about 3 a year, and for which the only difference is a change of company name. There’s a “free” forum, but the primary motivation for it seems to be to allow users to support themselves. Yes, questions are answered on the forum… but compared to the level of support I’ve been accustomed to from the same people in the past, I can’t help noticing something has changed… and not for the better. Some questions aren’t even acknowledged, though they are read over 300 times.
    2)     Add useless levels of indirection: when we sell an intranet, we asked Sleepycat to mail us an invoice, which we got within the week. Now we ask Oracle the same thing: the last time we did this was on November 27 of last year, and we still waiting for someone from “the Belgian office” to contact us. The only reply we got was from someone telling us our request would be passed on: a level of indirection not exactly adding value.
    3)     Increase useless Information Noise: www.sleepycat.com was all about Berkeley DB and related products. Look at any page on the www.oracle.com site supposedly about Berkely DB and count the number of items and links pointing to products that have nothing to do with Berkeley DB. It’s like that famous analogy: you’re only interested in a banana, and you must take the whole gorilla.
    Berkeley DB is the fire behind the electre.com site. Our customers are satisfied, so this is not going to change for this version. But this developer is now convinced to view Berkeley DB as a medium to long-term liability. The fire will be kept alive for the remainder of this electre.com version, but for future versions and other similar projects, other solutions will have to be found. These other solutions will involve a similar gamble as the one I made a few years ago with Berkeley DB. My only hope is to meet similar competence, friendliness and professionalism, but without the overhead and bureaucracy of an organization for which the product is not even part of the core business.

    Vincent,
    I hear the frustration and concern in your post. I'd like to assure you that we're still here doing what we've done in the past and that your business is valuable to us, don't give up yet! :)
    Moving from a company of 30 people to a company of >50,000 people has been an interesting transition for us as well. I have to say that honestly, things are pretty good here inside the realm of Oracle. Of course, some things were bound to change. Oracle has processes in place to acquire and grow companies and that is their intended goal with Sleepycat's Berkeley DB products. As such, some customer facing processes have changed and our home on the internet has been incorporated into the oracle.com site. The interesting thing to me is that even within Oracle's infrastructure you, the customer, are not really much further away from our engineers and support staff than before. Your suggestions, concerns, questions and bugs go directly to us via the same people pre-acquisition for the most part, although that staff is growing. With these OTN forums you have a way to speak directly to most of the Sleepycat staff, 99% of whom are still here at Oracle nearly one year post acquisition. So, I'd argue that we've done a great job of keeping that small company feeling in one of the largest software providers around.
    Our web content is 80% identical to that which was on the sleepycat.com sites. Bookmarking one or two locations within Oracle and OTN will get you straight to that information. Sure, there are other product references floating around on the same page and we hope that over time Berkeley DB products and other Oracle products complement each other when used in combination. In general, I believe that most of the web experience is identical with different style sheets and a few extra links.
    Support for eval customers continues to be something we provide free of charge via these forums and in private email conversations with our staff. This is unchanged. Ownership of customer issues is much the same as well and we do still use '[email protected]' for tracking issues once opened. We agree that '[email protected]' method of communication was simple and highly effective for us and our customers. We are working with Oracle's support infrastructure to consider adopting similar methods. This is another reason Oracle purchased Sleepycat, to learn from our efficient effective operational model. This is something that is ongoing, in the mean time we still track issues behind the scenes the same way as before with the added information provided by TARs so that we fit into the overall Oracle support infrastructure.
    The rumors of our early demise are highly exaggerated. Berkeley DB products are alive and well in Oracle. Just look at the releases we've made in the past 12 months.
    As for our three pronged attack. ;-)
    1. The distance between first contact with support and helpful information has, in some ways, increased. This is due to the Oracle infrastructure for support that manages all Oracle products. The forums are the replacement for the discussion email lists we managed at sleepycat.com. We're managing a much larger amount of traffic than in the past and most of it is done with the same Berkeley DB engineering team you've come to know and love. Maybe we need to make it more obvious when we answer a question by having a signature indicating who we are, sometimes that's not obvious. As to the particular question you posed, I don't know what happened but the same thing can happen on an email list. My apologies for the lack of a response.
    2. Oracle has a huge sales force worldwide. We're only beginning to fully function within this new infrastructure. Sorry we dropped the ball on your sales inquiry, rest assured that we're interested in all commercial deals. Once connected into the Belgium office you'll have a direct relationship, as before, with a sales rep for your use of Berkeley DB.
    3. I've already talked about this. Oracle has many products, we're just one of those. We have to fit within the overall site structure. For the most part I'd give us an A- or B+ for transitioning our sleepycat.com information into oracle.com and OTN.com. If you have suggestions as to how we might improve that, drop me a line I'm all ears.
    In general I'd like to believe that you and other developers like you will find that our place in Oracle doesn't prevent you from choosing Berkeley DB. Certainly it is a bigger company with some additional process overhead, but hopefully not so much that it prevents you from remaining a loyal customer and someone who would recommend us to others.
    regards,
    -greg

  • Is there a better way to do this projection/aggregate query?

    Hi,
    Summary:
    Can anyone offer advice on how best to use JDO to perform
    projection/aggregate queries? Is there a better way of doing what is
    described below?
    Details:
    The web application I'm developing includes a GUI for ad-hoc reports on
    JDO's. Unlike 3rd party tools that go straight to the database we can
    implement business rules that restrict access to objects (by adding extra
    predicates) and provide extra calculated fields (by adding extra get methods
    to our JDO's - no expression language yet). We're pleased with the results
    so far.
    Now I want to make it produce reports with aggregates and projections
    without instantiating JDO instances. Here is an example of the sort of thing
    I want it to be capable of doing:
    Each asset has one associated t.description and zero or one associated
    d.description.
    For every distinct combination of t.description and d.description (skip
    those for which there are no assets)
    calculate some aggregates over all the assets with these values.
    and here it is in SQL:
    select t.description type, d.description description, count(*) count,
    sum(a.purch_price) sumPurchPrice
    from assets a
    left outer join asset_descriptions d
    on a.adesc_no = d.adesc_no,
    asset_types t
    where a.atype_no = t.atype_no
    group by t.description, d.description
    order by t.description, d.description
    it takes <100ms to produce 5300 rows from 83000 assets.
    The nearest I have managed with JDO is (pseodo code):
    perform projection query to get t.description, d.description for every asset
    loop on results
    if this is first time we've had this combination of t.description,
    d.description
    perform aggregate query to get aggregates for this combination
    The java code is below. It takes about 16000ms (with debug/trace logging
    off, c.f. 100ms for SQL).
    If the inner query is commented out it takes about 1600ms (so the inner
    query is responsible for 9/10ths of the elapsed time).
    Timings exclude startup overheads like PersistenceManagerFactory creation
    and checking the meta data against the database (by looping 5 times and
    averaging only the last 4) but include PersistenceManager creation (which
    happens inside the loop).
    It would be too big a job for us to directly generate SQL from our generic
    ad-hoc report GUI, so that is not really an option.
    KodoQuery q1 = (KodoQuery) pm.newQuery(Asset.class);
    q1.setResult(
    "assetType.description, assetDescription.description");
    q1.setOrdering(
    "assetType.description ascending,
    assetDescription.description ascending");
    KodoQuery q2 = (KodoQuery) pm.newQuery(Asset.class);
    q2.setResult("count(purchPrice), sum(purchPrice)");
    q2.declareParameters(
    "String myAssetType, String myAssetDescription");
    q2.setFilter(
    "assetType.description == myAssetType &&
    assetDescription.description == myAssetDescription");
    q2.compile();
    Collection results = (Collection) q1.execute();
    Set distinct = new HashSet();
    for (Iterator i = results.iterator(); i.hasNext();) {
    Object[] cols = (Object[]) i.next();
    String assetType = (String) cols[0];
    String assetDescription = (String) cols[1];
    String type_description =
    assetDescription != null
    ? assetType + "~" + assetDescription
    : assetType;
    if (distinct.add(type_description)) {
    Object[] cols2 =
    (Object[]) q2.execute(assetType,
    assetDescription);
    // System.out.println(
    // "type "
    // + assetType
    // + ", description "
    // + assetDescription
    // + ", count "
    // + cols2[0]
    // + ", sum "
    // + cols2[1]);
    q2.closeAll();
    q1.closeAll();

    Neil,
    It sounds like the problem that you're running into is that Kodo doesn't
    yet support the JDO2 grouping constructs, so you're doing your own
    grouping in the Java code. Is that accurate?
    We do plan on adding direct grouping support to our aggregate/projection
    capabilities in the near future, but as you've noticed, those
    capabilities are not there yet.

    ad-hoc report GUI, so that is not really an option.
    KodoQuery q1 = (KodoQuery) pm.newQuery(Asset.class);
    q1.setResult(
    "assetType.description, assetDescription.description");
    q1.setOrdering(
    "assetType.description ascending,
    assetDescription.description ascending");
    KodoQuery q2 = (KodoQuery) pm.newQuery(Asset.class);
    q2.setResult("count(purchPrice), sum(purchPrice)");
    q2.declareParameters(
    "String myAssetType, String myAssetDescription");
    q2.setFilter(
    "assetType.description == myAssetType &&
    assetDescription.description == myAssetDescription");
    q2.compile();
    Collection results = (Collection) q1.execute();
    Set distinct = new HashSet();
    for (Iterator i = results.iterator(); i.hasNext();) {
    Object[] cols = (Object[]) i.next();
    String assetType = (String) cols[0];
    String assetDescription = (String) cols[1];
    String type_description =
    assetDescription != null
    ? assetType + "~" + assetDescription
    : assetType;
    if (distinct.add(type_description)) {
    Object[] cols2 =
    (Object[]) q2.execute(assetType,
    assetDescription);
    // System.out.println(
    // "type "
    // + assetType
    // + ", description "
    // + assetDescription
    // + ", count "
    // + cols2[0]
    // + ", sum "
    // + cols2[1]);
    q2.closeAll();
    q1.closeAll();

  • Saving iMovie 4 projects on an external hard drive

    I'm starting the ambitious project of copying our family videos from 8mm tapes to iMovie to eventually making DVDs. since I don't have much disk space on my iBook, my plan is to put the iMovie files on an external hard drive & work from there. Here are the system specs:
    Camera: Sony DCR-TRV520 (Digital 8)
    Computer: iBook 800 MHz PowerPC G3, 28GB hard drive, 5GB available
    OS 10.3.9
    iMovie 4
    Hard Drive: LaCie Eternet Disk mini 300GB (150GB available) format: Mac OS Extended
    Problem: Open a new iMovie project on the external hard drive. Start to import the footage. After one or 2 seconds, the image freezes and import aborts.
    Solution: Open a new project on the computer. Footage imports fine.
    Problem: Can only import 1/2 hour or so of video before I'm in trouble. Files WAY too big for my itty bitty iBook!
    Solution: Make a new iMovie file on the external hard drive & copy the clips from the computer to the hard drive. (this takes TONS of time!)
    Problem: Open movie file on the LaCie. Import the clips. Clips show up but won't play!
    Question: Is there any better way to do this? Why won't the project work on the external hard drive?
    I teach video production at a high school and have done this many times on newer iMacs (iLife 6). We can't save every project on the computers, so certain projects I'll copy to an external hard drive. I've never had a problem working on an iMovie project from the hard drive. I considered uploading my movies on the computers at school, however then I'm stuck with iMovie 6 files on the hard drive and iMovie 4 at home.
    Any suggestions -- other than get a newer computer?

    Importing new footage from a video camera and working with iMovie with footage already on the computer are two completely different things.
    At school, do you actually IMPORT video from digital camcorders directly to the USB drive as you said you were doing at home?
    Because while you can indeed work on iMovie projects off a USB drive if you are not actually importing video, the whole importing process from a Firewire camcorder is sort of a streaming video type transfer and Firewire is used because it has a mode for this type of transfer. USB, on the other hand, can not import video from a camcorder straight to a USB drive reliably because there is way too much CPU overhead associated with USB transfers and it therefore can not keep up with the "streaming" video coming out of the camcorder.
    If you want to find out more details, do a search for "isochronous" with Firewire. Firewire uses type types of transfers. Asynchronous transfer which is like USB uses where you transfer data, wait for the CPU to respond, then transfer the next chunk of data. Video transfer uses and isochronous process where, to put it very simply, the camcorder starts spitting out chunks of footage with a checksum and the receiving end receives it, calculates a checksum and if the checksums match, stores the chunk of data. If they don't match, the data is discarded and it starts to receive the next chunk of data. There is no ability to resend failed data so you get dropped frames in your footage.
    If you import via Firewire from Camcorder to Mac then directly to an external USB drive, the transfer from Mac to USB drive will be too slow as the CPU and drive have to start doing their "did you get it?", "Ya I got it, send another/No, send again please", "OK here it comes" routine while in the meantime the camcorder to Mac Firewire transfer is just pumping out data at a fixed rate. Once the USB connection falls behind the process aborts.

  • Best way to move 2 iMovie projects to 1 iDVD project?

    I am in a last minute bind and I was hoping I could get some help! I am making a DVD for my wedding reception that is NEXT weekend. ah! Anyway...here is what I have done:
    1. Created three slideshows w/ KB effects in iPhoto and exported them to quicktime movies. (Question on that if anyone knows - only had three quality levels for that creation, and I chose the highest. Is this the best way to turn these slideshows into movies for eventual incorporation into a DVD??)
    2. Imported all three slideshow movies into iMovie because I want them to play back to back (and found iDVD can't set it up that way) - added title slides between them & stitched them together in their entirity. Now I have one, big movie creation in iMovie that I want to be a feature on my DVD
    3. ALSO created an interview/tour video of our home and town to show at the reception. It contains multiple clips (over 120 edited) from a video camera, extracted audio from the video clips (for some), imported song files for background music, transitions, titles, etc. Now I have one really nice, almost 25 minute video video that I want to be a feature on my DVD.
    What I want to do:
    I want both of the movie creations I just described to be on my DVD. (I am planning on doing a third, if it fits & I have time, and I can do the same thing with that based on whatever advice I get.) The DVD will be really simple - just a single title on the main screen of the DVD for each movie b/c they will be played at different times during the reception.
    My questions/concerns:
    I looked at my options for getting my creation onto a DVD - here is what I found:
    1. I can share straight to iDVD - but it appears I can only do that for a single movie per DVD project. When I went to share the second movie, it asked me if I wanted to save my original DVD project before making a new one. So it doesn't seem like I can "share" multiple movies to the same DVD project. Also, when you do this - what is really happening?? It didn't take very long, so I know it wasn't copying files over. Is it just making links back to the referenced files, and will somehow write a movie when I actually burn the DVD? If so, what then will be my options for creating the movie??
    2. From iMovie, I can export a project in a number of ways (to video camera, quicktime, email, web, etc). I am assuming that quicktime gives me the best, but not sure. The PROBLEM is that when I exported my main (25min) video, it was over 5GB!!!!!!! That seems a tad big. I forget the size that a DVD can hold, but it just seems like there should be a better way, and this is too big (maybe not?).
    Needs:
    As I have stated, this is to be shown at my wedding reception (and maybe parts at the rehearsal dinner). Primarily it is designed for an overhead projector, but obviously it will be watched on TVs/computers at some point.
    I am wanting to make sure the video(s) is the best quality I can make it so that it all comes out well. This is my FIRST project, so there are several things I just don't know enough about at this point - learning with this important video, must be crazy!! It looks REALLY good so far, now it is just outputting it so I can show it to the world.
    Thanks for ANY pertinent help you can provide, and please, limit responses to the actual things I am asking about as I don't have a lot of time to wade through things trying to 2nd guess & pick what I need. That would be very helpful!!

    You can do it in one of two ways (I have done both):
    1. Follow the procedure I outlined using Toast Titanium. You don't have all the bells and whistles of iDVD in the final product, but you have a working DVD. And there has been an ongoing issue with encoding in iDVD where the process hangs or slow way down, especially at the audio endoding stage.
    2. Start a new iMovie, and then copy and paste the clips and audio from your other iMovies into the new one. I tried importing but could not figure out how to do that or if it is even possible. The process of copy and paste is tedious and problematic, especially with the audio tracks and if anyone else has found a better way, I would really like to know. But this does work, but be prepared to spend some time. But it has the advantage of you being able to pick and choose.
