PS CS5(64) OpenGL Drawing Not Enabled by Default
Hello! I have a PC I built last fall (PC2) I'm now grooming to be my main PC. I'm preparing to rebuild my current main PC (PC1). PC2 will soon have to do the heavy lifting. PC2 has a performance problem; I noticed when I was going through Photoshop CS5 (64-bit) preferences. On the Performance page, GPU Settings area, Enable OpenGL Drawing is not checked by default. (In my retiring PC1 Enable OpenGL Drawing is checked by default and the video adapter is listed in the area.)
I have this related oddity I hope we can troubleshoot: When I drag to move or resize a window in PC2 only the outline moves or resizes until the mouse button is released. (In my PC1, the windows move /resize as they are dragged.) Any ideas where to start looking for the cause?
I had the identical nVidia driver on both PCs. Just this afternoon I did a clean install of the latest nVidia driver, 270.61 on PC2. It made no difference.
BTW, the motherboard, CPU, GPU (ZOTAC ZT-98GES3M-FSL) and data HDD are the same model on both PCs.
Here's my PC2 List:

Disable Indexing
Indexing is supposed to make it quick and easy to find things on your computer using Windows Search (that little box at the upper-right of Explorer windows).
But when you think about it, does it make sense to read all the files on your disk, extract everything you could possibly want to search for, and store it on that same disk another way? To even consider indexing providing better performance than just searching the files, Microsoft must be picking and choosing the data they think you'll want to look for (excluding data you WON'T want to search for), where you'll want to search, and in what kinds of files, and in fact they are. How could they know everything you'll ever want to search for?
They can't. Not everything is indexed, and never will be!
Try this: Create a simple text file on your disk, in a temporary folder. Call it "FindMe.log" and put in the text "This file contains important tax information". Now navigate to that folder with Explorer and enter the word "tax" into the Search box at the upper-right. Enter any of the words in that file! Windows Search will not find the file, because it simply does not LOOK in .log files by default, and there's no fallback strategy - Windows Search simply does not index nor search for information for some kinds of files. Incredible!
All it takes is ONE TIME searching for something you know is there and NOT finding it to destroy your confidence in Windows Search.
And so they scan through your files endlessly, pick out the strings you might someday search for, and store them in yet another set of files (the "index"). As though your computer has nothing better to do.
Not only is the basic premise of this wrong, but it's not even implemented very well. The index often becomes corrupted, and so Microsoft has provided functions for you to clear and regenerate it. Just what you wanted to be doing - NOT.
Consider these shortcomings:
Some file types are simply not indexed or searched by default – e.g., .log files, and there's no fallback. If you create a new file type no one's seen before, its contents will not be indexed.
Only strings they think you are likely to search for are indexed.
Because of poor implementation, indexing will miss things in some file types that are indexed – e.g., older Microsoft Word documents or files containing Unicode text (Microsoft's own invention).
Indexes often become corrupted and the Windows Search results fall out of date or it stops finding things entirely.
Indexing operations use computer time, increase disk wear, and interfere with your own access to your files.
In summary, indexed Windows Search operations in Windows 7 simply can't be trusted to find your data in your files when it's critical, and so they're essentially useless. Searching for filenames using Windows Search actually can be occasionally useful (though the syntax to ensure it searches only filenames is a bit tricky), but this doesn't require indexing.
Moreover, indexing can actually interfere with file operations, causing your system to report disk corruption, because of an implementation error in indexing and NTFS (search the web for "Atomic Oplock", for example).
So indexing should simply and utterly be disabled. This won't actually stop you being able to try Windows Search - on the contrary with indexing off Windows 7 will actually search your actual files (within the limitations listed above) just when you tell it to, and (since indexing isn't implemented very well) it may actually INCREASE the probability that you might find what you're looking for.
Here's how to disable indexing:
Click Start and enter services in the search box.
When Services (with little gears) comes up, click it.
Scroll down to the Windows Search service.
Right click it and choose Properties.
Change the Startup type to Disabled.
Click [ Stop ] to stop the service.
Click [ OK ].
Click Start and enter index in the search box.
When Indexing options comes up, click it.
Click the Advanced button.
Click the [ Rebuild ] button to delete the index.
It is a good idea to reboot after this.
So your searches work properly and you're not nagged by Windows to reenable indexing:
Open a Windows Explorer window.
Choose Tools – Folder Options.
Click the Search tab.
Click the button next to "Don't use the index when searching in file folders for system files (searches might take longer)".
Click Start and type group policy into the search box.
When Edit Group Policy comes up, click it.
Navigate to User Configuration – Administrative Templates – Windows Components – Windows Explorer.
Enable the Turn off Windows Libraries features that rely on indexed file data entry.
If you do not have the Group Policy Editor on your version of Windows, change this registry entry:
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Mac OS X 10.8.2's firewall not enabled by default?
Hello.
Is it me or is Mountain Lion's firewall not enabled by default? I didn't check in the preinstalled 10.7.x before I upgraded to it. I find that weird and puzzled why Apple did that if that was by design.
Thank you in advance.fowlerryan wrote:
Apple's firewall is disabled by default in mountain lion. I think this might be because of its new appl protection thing. Once the firewall is activated it will only open apps which are downloaded from the app store without questioning you. If you download an app from the web and have the firewall on, you will have to right click on the app and click open (for first time use only) to let the firewall know this is a safe app that you chose to download.
It may seem not having firewall on by default is silly but I think there would be far more complaints by people on here that they cant open their apps that they downlaoded from the web.
Hope it helps!
Ryan
Sheesh, and Apple is trying to make our newer Mac OS X systems more vulnerable like Windows before it came with firewalls enabled. -
I want to be able to use Photoshop features like being able to rotate the canvas, but I keep getting errors saying "Could not complete request because it only works with OpenGL enabled document windows." But I have decent graphics cards which support OpenGL 3 and I have no problem using OpenGL in other programs. Why can't I use it in Photoshop?

Syslog not enabled by default in systemd setup
I installed Arch Linux from the 2012.10.6 iso, using systemd, and following the new, lengthy instructions. Made separate partitions for /var, /boot, and /home. Used btrfs on all of them. The system works fine, so far, except that most of the log files are missing. dmesg works. I intend this machine to be a server, so it has php-fpm and Apache, but not X Windows.
This is what I have in /var/log:
btmp faillog httpd/ journal/ lastlog old/ pacman.log php-fpm.log wtmp
Where is messages.log? Checking further, I found that the syslog (actually syslog-ng) service was never enabled. Soon as I activated syslog, messages.log and the rest of the usual files were created. Also, cron (cronie) was not enabled, which means no logrotate. Even if I missed something in the instructions, shouldn't syslog and cron be enabled by default?
Issues like this have me wondering if systemd is such a good idea. Making logging enabled by default ought to be easy enough to do, and shouldn't be a reason to back away from systemd. But systemd has other issues. It's Linux specific-- needs kernel features that are only in Linux. So it won't work with FreeBSD. From what I've read on LKML, the push towards systemd comes from the udev developers, who it seems are causing problems. udev was not supposed to depend on systemd, and now it will.Have you read e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … md_Journal ?
The last paragraph of your post was unnecessary as it's a rant and the issues you raised were covered multiple times already. -
Handoff is not enabled by default despite having Bluetooth 4.0
I currently have a 2011 macbook air that for some reason does not support handoff, despite having hardware capable of running it. I have Bluetooth 4.0 (The requirement for Handoff), but the option to enable handoff does not appear. Could anyone tell me why it is not available? Is it because there is some other hardware that is needed? Or is it because Apple chooses to make older computers obsolete on purpose?

Mercury CUDA not enabling when using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 on Apple Mac Pro after Mavericks install
Been using the same setup since CS5 with the Mercury CUDA running perfectly. After recent upgrade of OS X to 10.9 Mercury CUDA is no longer available and only lets me run with the OpenGL or software options. Im using a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 for apple computers. Here are the results for the GPUSniffer program in the latest Premiere Pro 7.1.0 files. The LAST line make me chucle because it the first on the list of supported card in the "cuda_supported_cards.txt" file. Anybody else seen this?

Hi Wendell,
Sorry for the inconvenience. NVIDIA is currently working on drivers that support CUDA on Mavericks 10.9 with some of the older NVIDIA cards such as the GTX 285 and the Quadro 4800.
For others interested, the Quadro 4000, K5000 and GTX 680 ect... work with CUDA in 10.9.
Best,

I have latest CUDA drivers, so i guess i am just waiting till a proper update that have the fixes to support my card. -

I've already had to update the dovecot.conf once <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3792>, but I can't tell if this is on the Dovecot side or the OD side.Many thanks to Apple Enterprise Tech Support.
The access control list for mail was not set to all users and groups.
To fix:
(1) In Server Admin, select the server.
(2) Select the 'Access' panel.
(3) Select the 'Mail' service'
(4) Set the radio button to 'Allow all users and groups'.
Previously I'd had mail restricted to 'only users and groups below'. -
HELP! OpenGL Drawing Disabled in CS5...
I'm running dual Nvidia Gefore 8800 GTs w/ SLI enabled on a Windows 7 32 bit machine. The checkbox to enable OpenGL drawing is disabled (as is the advanced option button), and where it says "Detected Video Card:" it's just blank. I should note - Photoshop CS4 was working just fine with OpenGL Drawing enabled and full GPU acceleration. The Adobe drivers documentation states that the 8800 GT is fully supported for CS5...
I've scoured the support forums on both Nvidia and Adobe and no one seems to be able to answer this. Yep - I'm running the latest Nvidia drivers (v. 258.96), I've uninstalled and reinstalled CS5, and totally cleaned my registry.
I'm aware of the option to download the test tools from Adobe and force hardware emulation mode to get the OpenGL options to work, but that's really not a solution in my opinion. That's basically bypassing the acceleration I should be getting from Nvidia. It's pretty clearly stated on the download page that Adobe doesn't recommend it as a solution either.
Is anyone else having this issue? I'm incredibly frustrated and would greatly appreciate any/all information anyone has...My video cards are dual GeForce 8800 GTs w/ SLI. According to Nvidia and Adobe's documentation, they are fully capable of driving Photoshop CS5. I run ZBrush, SoftImage, Blender, and a slew of other much more graphically intensive apps with no issues.
I installed the latest version of the Nvidia drivers; after that didn't work, I ran the latest beta drivers, which also didn't work. There's got to be a fix from either Nvidia or Adobe for this. The cards are fully capable and are listed in the index of supported cards on Adobe's site. -
PS CS4 problems with OpenGL drawing enabled
I've just upgraded from PS CS3 to PS CS4 (default 32 and 64 versions) and I'm having problems with seeing image files above a certain size (even moderate size) with OpenGL Drawing enabled. Disabling OpenGL Drawing results in very slow image display (very easy to see the blocks being drawn one at a time), much slower than with PS CS3.
I'm running Vista 64 with latest updates. I'm trying to get PS CS4 32 running properly first, but PS CS4 64 seems to be having similar problems.
GeForce 9600 GT video card with latest driver 178.24 (updated yesterday and rebooted many times since then). That card is in Adobe's list of tested cards.
Main monitor (where I display Photoshop images) selected as primary in the driver dialog.
I put palettes/panes on my 2nd monitor.
I use Ultramon for 2nd monitor taskbar functionality. Turning Ultramon off doesn't seem to help, although I may need to disable Ultramon from launching on reboot.
No plugins installed yet in PS CS4 (32), as per Adobe kb advice.
4GB of RAM with Memory Usage set within Photoshop's Ideal Range.
For testing, I've been opening a few different size (px and bytes) RGB image files in Photoshop by dragging them from an Explorer window into the Photoshop window, then clickin in the Photoshop window to make Photoshop active and show its palettes.
First with OpenGL Drawing enabled in Performance, default Advanced Settings.
JPEG, 3600 x 2600 px, 4.5MB
- opens and displays ok (short delay before palettes appear)
- zooms and rotates smoothly
TIFF, 2 layers, 800 x 600 px, 16 bits, 2.5MB
- opens and displays ok (short delay before palettes appear)
- zooms and rotates smoothly
TIFF, 1 layer, 3600 x 2600 px, 16 bits, 54MB
- doesn't open properly, shows checkerboard instead of image, with checkerboard in navigator and layer icon in layers pane
- histogram is fine
- zooming and rotation are not smooth (jumps to new position/size)
- duplicate layer caused PS CS4 to stop working, with a close program dialog
- open PS CS4 32 again, no OpenGL message today, and OpenGL Drawing is still enabled (although I got the OpenGL Drawing message more than once yesterday)
TIFF, several layers, 3600 x 2600 px, 16 bits, 306 MB
- doesn't open properly, shows checkerboard instead of main image
- icons in layers pane look fine, same as navigator image
- checkerboard zooms and rotates smoothly
- duplicate layer is still checkerboard, back one history state stopped working / close program dialog
- started PS again, opened 1 layer TIFF, closed and tried to open multi layer TIFF again, but stopped working / close program dialog again
I then tried the same images with OpenGL Drawing disabled in Performance.
3600 x 2600 px JPEG
- ok, but slow, blocky redraw
2 layer 800 x 600 px TIFF
- ok, but slight delay in redraw (smallest of all the files, both in px and bytes)
1 layer 3600 x 2600 px TIFF
- opened ok, but slow, blocky redraw
multi layer 3600 x 2600 px TIFF
- opened ok, but slow, blocky redraw
From what I've read in various Adobe kb notes, it sounds like there's some kind of conflict with my video driver, but I haven't been able to figure it out. I even tried the registry plugin from the Adobe kb to disallow OpenGL Windows, but that didn't seem to make any difference. It didn't even stop me being able to select and use OpenGL Drawing in PS CS4.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm tearing my hair out here and I'm feeling a bit like I've blown my money on the upgrade so far.I had another look at PS CS4 64 and those smaller (by file size) images that I can see with OpenGL Drawing on rotate and resize in a jumpy way, not smoothly like in PS CS4 32.
The multi layer TIFF that showed the images in at least the layers pane and navigator when using PS CS4 32 only shows the checkerboard in the layers pane and navigator in PS CS4 64.
Either way, neither version is anywhere near working properly.
Oh yeah, and I made a typo on the RAM. It's 6GB and not 4GB, not that I think that would make any difference. -
Today I installed a new graphics card, (82865G graphics controller)512 mb... How do I enable openGL drawing on my CS4 Photoshop? My preferences does not acknowledge new card and I have the newest driver. So what do I do now???? Thanks.
that's a big maybe
to completely uninstall video card drivers you have to uninstall your drivers from the Control Panel, restart your system and hold F8 while booting up. It should give you a list of options when windows starts loading, chose Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, run Driver Sweeper http://downloads.guru3d.com/Driver-Sweeper-beta-2.0.0-download-2186.html (make sure to download and install it before you enter safe mode though). Once this is done, restart your system, start normally and install the new drivers
Did you try running those .reg files that i linked to? -
MenuActions not enabling in InDesign CS5.5
Hi Scripters,
InDesign CS4/CS5 is able to invoke menuActions using the below mentioned javascript code.
var myMenuAction = app.menuActions.item("$ID/Go to Item");
try {
myMenuAction.invoke();
}catch (err){exit();};
However when I use the same code in InDesign CS5.5 version, we are encountering "Action not enabled" error.
Note: Please select the required XML element from the Structure Panel before running this code.
Thanks & Regards
csm_philA related issue, perhaps. I am trying to toggle Menu options via script, to set a user environment. To make sure that Window->Tools is checked, this always works:
try {
var myTools = app.menuActions.item("Tools").checked;
catch (e) {}
if (myTools ==false) {
try {
app.menuActions.item("Tools").invoke();
catch (e) {}
But I also want to toggle things that lack a checkmark, such as Hide Hidden Characters.
This returns different results depending on whether a document is open, and sometimes does not toggle the selection (Show/Hide) and returns different values for the .checked call.
try {
var myHidden = app.menuActions.item("Hide Hidden Characters").checked;
catch (e) {alert("Error"); }
if (myHidden ==false ) {
try {
app.menuActions.item("Hide Hidden Characters").invoke();
catch(e) {}
Sometimes this returns false, sometimes undefined. I have done many iterations, also looking for ("Show Hidden Characters").checked
The original code was written for InCopy. Any menu item that is truly checked is easily controlled. The ones that toggle Show/Hide are a mess in both InCopy and InDesign.
Am I using the wrong syntax?

If you really tried every solution how can we help?
Seriously, give us system details, camera model, ACR version reported under PS Help, and we can maybe suggest something. -
OpenGL won't enable...
Hi. I noticed that I can't use effects such as repousse one of the features that encouraged me to upgrade to cs5. I was told to enable OpenGl drawing from Preferences but when I go there and try to enable it, it's greyed out and says: Graphics hardware acceleration is unavaible. You will need to upgrade your video driver or possibly your video card. I have the latest drivers downloaded and all. I also checked if my graphics card (Intel G45) was in the list of supported cards and it was. Please tell me how to solve or find a workaround for this problem. I am running on Windows 7 (x86).

All I'm saying, Chris, is that a simple disclaimer would have sufficed. I simply would not have purchased had the information been available. Just saying.
I just can't let this kind of dismissive statement go. You're acting like you expected Adobe to call you up and personally tell you it wouldn't work on XP x64... Life ain't like that!
I looked at this page, really quite easy to find on Adobe's site: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/systemreqs/
Lo and behold, it tells you operating systems Photoshop CS5 runs on. XP x64 is not listed there.
Was the print too small or something? XP x64 is not listed there. Nor does XP x64 have a service pack 3, so you can't say you were confused by that.
You need to take some responsibility for missing this and stop blaming Adobe.
