PS CS5 doesn't see my ati 4870 card
Hi All,
I have a flashed ATI 4870 1 GB card and a Nvidia GeFroce 7300 GT card in my MacPro.
The 4870 is my main card but PS CS5 is selecting the Nvidia as the main card. Is there a reason for this?
Anyone else experiencing this?

Since I have the Apple branded 4870, the only way for me to run a second monitor is to either connect it to a second video card (in my case the 7300 GT) or buy a $30 dollar MD-to-DVI adapter. I went ahead and bought the adapter tonight (money I feel I should not have had to spend, since I already own a second video card). After connecting my second monitor to the 4870 via the MD port, CS5 Performance Pref Pane indicated that no video cards were detected! Strangely, all the advance OpenGL settings were available. Before, when the second monitor was connected to the 7300 GT, CS5 was detecting the 7300 GT, but only the basic OpenGL setting was selectable. As I said earlier, CS4 has no trouble detecting the 4870 with 7300 GT installed.
Since there is no reason for me to keep the 7300 GT in my Mac Pro any longer (I don't have a third monitor), I uninstalled it. CS5 now recognizes the 4870 and all OpenGL settings are available. I haven't done much testing yet, but things seem a lot snappier than before.
Glad you're up and running. Enjoy!

Photoshop CS3 allows me to enable Open GL but CS4 does not Brand new MacPro with ATI 4870 card
Hi,
I just bought a brand new 8 core Mac Pro and have both the ATI 4870 graphics card and the Nvidia GT 120 card. Pshop CS3 allows me to "enable openGL" in the prefs and utiizes it when doing 3d stuff... however, CS4 has it dimmed in the prefs, thereby not allowing me to check it (it is dimmed and unchecked I should say) and when I do 3d stuff a dialog box saying
"Your video card does not meet the requirements for hardware-accelerated 3D rendering. All 3D will be rendered with software only."
any thoughts?
thanks in advance.yeah, short term test deems keeping both cards in.
So, here are the results: Notes: I have 2 monitors, an Apple 30" and Apple 23". The 30" can only be used in the dual link dvi port and NOT the Mini Display port. Second: The ATI 4870 seems to have an issue with the Mini Display port, it does not work, alone or in tandem with the dual link dvi port being used. Apple is replacing the card (heretofore, I had no cause to use the Mini Display port on the 4870 at all) Third: Only Photoshop CS4 extended was used to see if the card was detected and if it had enabled Open GL
ATI 4870 - dual link used, Mini Display NOT used: Photoshop sees the card and enables Open GL

Why can't I see my ATI graphics card
I bought LENOVO ThinkCentre Edge 72 last year (I don't know the exact model, is it marked on the case somewhere?) and was under the impression that it has an ATI graphics card, but when I go to the devise manager I can only see an "Intel(R) HD Graphics" under Display adapters. Why is this, maybe I was wrong and it doesn't have an ATI card?
Launch Disk Utility and repair permissions for the Mac OS X containing harddisk, reboot and see if the problem solves on its own. Sometimes software installation messes up some drivers ( kexts ) to load properly that worked before. Repairing permissions is a standard routine that can help some weired issues. You can also try to reinstall the latest OS X update 10.5.8 to reinstall drivers that might have become damaged over time.
If the camera or Cardreader came with specific OSX software I would suggest a reinstallation of that.
Resetting the PRAM ( to fix corrupted preferences ) would be also a advise.
All in all OSX can run with no problems for months, but sometimes the underlying UNIX architecture just needs a bit of mainteance; the permissions are always a starting point to fix. -
Lightroom Doesn't See Images on SD Card
Hi
Just come back from a photo trip and tried to import my images into Lightroom from my SD Card and Lightroom doesn't see them, all it see's are the images I took on Saturday.
Today I arrived at my location to photograph Pasque Flowers, I took 1 image then realised I hadn't deleted the images from Saturday so I used the 'Delete Images From Card' in my camera's menu and then proceeded to take a few hundred images. During the day I reviewed my images several times, so I know they were definitely saved to the SD Card.
When I got home I tried to import my images in to Lightroom and all Lightroom saw on the card were the images I took last Saturday.
I tried closing down Lightroom and opening it again - nothing, just the images from Saturday!
I tried using the SD Card reader on my iMac - again, just Saturday's images were found.
I then put my card back into my camera and all I could see were my Pasque flower images from today.
So it seems my camera see's todays images yet Lightroom only sees the images from Saturday I had deleted via my camera's menu at the start of today.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Regards
Chris

Things have moved on today.
I have a long conversation with Canon and finally got the images off my camera by connecting it directly to my iMac and using Canon's EOS Utility to download the images. The EOS Utility saw both yesterdays images and the ones taken last Saturday.
I have to say it took several attempts to finally get all the images off the card and a similar number of attempts to get Lightroom to import them - but it has been achieved.
Interestingly the chap at Canon said that they (Canon) believe there is a problem with Lightroom's Library (not quite sure how I go about proving that). Anyway I have tried formatting the offending SD Card and none of the images are deleted which leads me to suspect, as you do that it might be a faulty SD card.
All the relevent serial numbers, invoice and photographs have been sent to Sandisk and I await their reply. Thankfully I purchased the card through Amazon UK who are the official retailer for Sandisk, so hopefully I should get my card replaced IF it is found to be faulty. -
Switching in an ATI 4870 Card on my S10
Hi,
I just ordered my S10 but need to swap out the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 290 for an ATI 4870 (or something close).
Does anyone know if:
- The current 650w power supply can hack this (I am also adding another DVD burner and two 750GB hard drives)
- The longer 4870 card would fit into the S10?
Thanks,
Dave
Solved!
Go to Solution.the S10 was designed to handle an nvidia FX 5600 so i wouldn't imagine the radeon 4800 series to be much worse. i haven't used an S10 personally to know how well it can cool large GPUs.
my best suggestion would be to buy the card from a retailer with a good return policy (tigerdirect.com comes to mind) and try it. use something like hardware monitor and/or GPU-Z to watch temps on the card.

PP CS5 doesn't see MB Looks 2.5?
I'm running CS5 Suite:
I recently upgraded to Red Giant Color Suite / Magic Bullet Looks 2.5.
At first, PP was seeing this suite. I flew it into a short project in PP.
I got the red line above the video track, then press the edit key to render the
short 15 second clip.
The program froze. I rebooted and tried again, and again. Same thing happened.
So I contacted the tech dept. for Red Giant and they had me change a few settings
in MBLooks but the same problem kept occurring.
They then had me reboot PP while holding down the shift key. Then open the
same project and go from there. Well now, I MBLooks or Red Giant Colour Suite
is NOT showing up under my Video plugins anymore.
I've re-installed again but it doesn't show up in PP. However, it does show up and
works fine in After Effects.
Any suggestions on how to get this back and working in PP?
Thanks very much.

Any fix for "CS5 doesn't see my video card"?
I know there have been threads about CS5 not recognizing video cards on Windows 7 64-bit machines. I was looking to see if any progress has been made in solving that problem. My searches don't turn up anything.
I'm running CS5 on a Dell 1645 with Core i7 820 and an ATI Mobility Radeon 4670 1GB. The card has the latest drivers, is functioning properly, and is one of the cards Adobe lists as "supported" for OpenGL. However, CS5 does not detect the card, and Enable OpenGL is grayed-out.
I tried the workaround suggested in another thread, adding an "enable old GPUs" line to the registry, but that didn't work. Is there any other fix?
Doc_PitOut of curiosity, do you have any "mirror" driver installed - i.e., something like PC Anywhere or RAdmin or other package designed to allow someone else to control your user interface? These are known to get in the way sometimes.
There is a registry tweak to force Photoshop to use the OpenGL features of your video driver. It's for diagnostic use only, but it could serve as a workaround until you can get to the bottom of the driver problem (perhaps it will be solved in an upcoming release of the ATI drivers).
Some of the information in this thread might help you: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2954477
Note that the registry tweak is good for diagnostic purposes, and enabling GPU acceleration where Photoshop does not believe the driver can support it can lead to instability and crashes, with loss of data. It will be interesting to know whether the ATI mobility drivers can support proper OpenGL operation on your system.

Photoshop CC 2014 doesn't recognize my ATI 4870
Hello guys, I have just installed Windows 8.1 + all updates.
After that of course the Photoshop CC 2014 was installed cause I work a lot with my photos.
Earlier I had win 7 64bit and now win 8.1 64bit.
I have a problem cause PS CC doesn't recognize my video card correctly.
I can't enable "use graphics processor". In windows 7 64bit everything was ok.
I assure you that I have the latest drivers from AMD/Ati site.
Can you help me some how ?
This option is very useful for me cause I use a lot of adaptive wide angle for example.
What can I do in this situation ?Sure there is. Download/ buy the CC versions from Topaz Labs.

Ovi Suite doesn't see music on SD card + Won't use...
I seem to have to problems with Ovi Suite - Or is it just me?
(1) Ovi Suite can't see any of my music which is on my 32 gig SD Memory Card (the obvious place for it). My N8 doesn't have any trouble seeing it!
(2) Ovi Suite won't let me nominate my music library location, because it isn't on the C drive.
Effectively, I can't use Ovi Suite for my music for these 2 reasons - Currently I'm using drag & drop to load music onto the N8
Thanks

I just had to reinstall Photoshop CS5. Now I can't load (old) Kodak filters.
CS5 sees the Kodak folder, but the filters don't show up in the list.
The filters are:
1. DIGITAL GEM Airbrush Professional Plug-In 2.1
2. DIGITAL ROC Professional Plug-In 2.1
They are 32 bit filters, so I am loading them to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Kodak\
I've tried installing them directly to the above folder.
I've tried installing them to where Kodak wants to put them and then moving them to the above folder.
I've tried installing them to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Filters
instead of \Plug-ins\Kodak, still no joy.
Each time I restart CS5 (32), it sees the Kodak folder but not the .8bf files.
I even reloaded the originals from Kodak. CS5 doesn't see the filters.
Thanks,
DrewThe significant file from the
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Kodak\DIGITAL GEM Airbrush Professional Plug-In 2.1
folder is DigitalAIRProV2.8BF. It is neither Read-only nor Hidden.
The same is true for the significant file in the other problem folder.
I'm not sure what I'm looking for in
C:\Users\Drew\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Plugins
The folders contained therein have nothing to do with user installed filters.
I can manually add
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Kodak\
as an Additional Plug-Ins Folder. That makes no difference. (It shouldn't be necessary because the root:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins
is the default.)
The NoiseNinja plug-in located in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\NoiseNinjaPlugin_Win32
works just fine.
So, why not the Kodak filters? -
does anybody have a similar setup? i seem to be having problems getting my system to boot with a ATI 4870 in, i have tried everything. i even purchased a new PSU but i'm still getting the same result, has anybody came across a problem like this before with this board?
i dont really see why it would be causing a problem as my current 8000GT runs fine on the board :(
much thxhi thx for the reply
as far as the board goes its a MSI Neo2 FR this is the one http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170&prod_no=1261
when i try to boot with the HD4870 in i get and error and going by the lights on the board it would be a problem with the graphics interface, green, red, red, red, i replace the card with my old 8800GT and the system boots fine. i know theres nothing wrong with the ATI 4870 card as its been sent back to the place i bought it from and tested and seems to be fine :/
edit: i also have the latest bois which is v1.10 -
Radeon ATI 4870 PROBLEM????
Hey Everyone,
So I have a brand new MacPro with the Dual Quad 2.93 and 16GB of Ram, I have the ATI 4870 Card running along with my DeckLink HD Extreme 3 capture card. My question is that it seems like this graphics card is having trouble supporting my 30inchACD and TWO Samsung P2570HD's TOTAL OF 3 DISPLAYS, one of the Samsungs is connected via HDMI from my Decklink HD Ex and the other through MiniDisplay to DVI, I get weird issues like my mouse pointer freezing up and sometimes weird dropped frames in FCP7...can i or should i add another graphics card??? any solutions...MANY THANKS!!!!Nice. 150 bucks for the converter. And its out of stock.
Luckily I found a much better solution... sold my 24inch cinema display on craiglist, and buy an ASUS VW266H for 280 bucks on amzn. Turns out the image quality on it is much better as well.
I'd highly recommend anyone to ditch their apple lcd for a higher quality lcd for a fraction of the cost. And leave these horrific compatibility problems behind you. -
Aperture will not run with new ATI 4870
I just received my ATi 4870 card from Apple today. Installed it in my early 2008 MacPro. Card works fine for everything except when launching Aperture I get the error "The graphics card installed does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture to run". Huh?? This is replacing a nVidia GeForce 8800 GT. The Ati is a newer, faster GPU than the nVidia and should absolutely run under Aperture. I'm guessing that Apple has not implemented the support for this card in Aperture, which is ridiculous since they're shipping it. Anybody else having this problem? Is there a work around until Apple fixes this?
ThanksChacro, it's definitely faster than my 8800GT. I don't wait nearly as long for images to render in Aperture, iPhoto, or Photoshop. I work strictly with Canon RAW 5DMarkII files that tend to be ~22-25MB and it loads 'em up like "right now" quick. Overall, I'm happy with it though it was a bit spendy. My advice would be to maybe wait for the nVidia GT285. Rumors are that Apple will be offering that in June, though I don't know if it will only be a BTO option, or sold separately as well. Sounds like that card is going to be just a little more expensive than the 4870, and will pack a full 1GB or RAM. I would have probably waited had I known that was coming when I ordered my 4870. I may wind up selling the 4870 then, or ordering a new MacPro with the GT285 option. Seems I can never have enough power to sling my photos around At the very least, I'll be selling the 8800GT though. Still a great card for someone looking for a bargain

10.6.4 Combo Update - Kernel Panic on 1st Gen Mac Pro with 8GB and ATI 4870
Hi,
I installed the 10.6.4 combo update last night and now my system constantly kernel panics. It was fine with 10.6.3 for months and never kernel panicked.
I have 4 x 2GB FB-Dimms and a ATI 4870 card.
The system is also only showing one display and I can force it to kernel panic by going to system preferences and selecting 'Detect Displays'.
Anyone got any suggestions before I reinstall back to 10.6.3?
Thanks
PaulHey guys. I have got a new Macbook Pro 13" model and I am getting kernel panics. I've been trying to partition the drive for Boot Camp and after I updated yesterday (to 10.6.4) i've been getting the kernel panic sign. Also, when I boot from my Snow Leopard disk to go into Disk Utility to repair the permissions (I opened Onyx and on the SMART check it said the permissions needed to be reset) I get a kernel panic and it crashes! So at the moment i've just backed up my work and I am panicking myself as I have no idea what to do from here.
Any help would be appreciated! -
Mac Pro doesn't see third monitor
Guys:
My Mac Pro doesn't see all three of the monitors that I have hooked up...what am I doing wrong?
I previously came to you for your expert advice about video cards...I went and upgraded my Radeon 4870 which was running two monitors (Eizo and NEC) to a ATI Radeon 5870 in order to run three monitors (my new Cintiq)
When the Cintiq was not hooked up yet, the Mac saw the Eizo and NEC. When I connected the Cintiq...the Cintiq and the NEC show up but not the Eizo.
I went and upgraded the video card so I could run all three monitors because I didn't want to plug and unplug the Cintiq whenever I needed it. I believe I did my due diligence as far as research was concerned to ensure this would all work together...I'll be pretty bummed if this configuration can't do three monitors not to mention the financial cost.
Any help would be appreciated...as always.
Thanks!I read your links, if I understand correctly, it may work with Dual Link DVI adapters?
My monitor connections are:
Eizo: DVI with the cord that came with the monitor (unsure if DVI single or dual link)
NEC: VGA to mini display
Cintiq: DVI to mini display (think it is a single link DVI)
Thanks!...so what do I need to go buy?
Here's a partial answer (need more info to answer about single vs. dual link, more about that later).
In the Mac Pro (Mid 2010)... document I referenced above there's a key note:
Note: The Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adaptor and Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor are considered active adaptors.
So if you get the apple mini-displayport to VGA adaptor that will count as one of the active adaptors. I use one of those incidentially but I am not sure but it may be that all mini-displayport to VGA adaptors are consider "active".
Now for the single vs. dual link DVI question. It depends on the max resolution of those monitors (or the max you want to run them at). Single link DVI has a max resolution of 1920 x 1200, while dual link DVI can display a resolution of 2560 x 1600. So that's why I cannot answer this part of your question (you didn't specify the max resolution). If you only need single link active adaptors they will certainly be a lot cheaper than dual link.
Also note, you should only need two active adaptors on the card to support 3 monitors. So only one of the remaining connections needs to be an active adaptor. The other can be passive (much cheaper).
