PS3 Gamepad Support in Mavericks - do I need the cable every time to avoid the flashing lights?

I now have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, 17".    I kind of wanted to play a few games without resorting to the keypad, and had heard that PS3 controllers worked out of the box with Mavericks.
I followed the instructions found online in various places - basically all the same - plug in the USB cable, it shows up in the bluetooth list - hold the PS button in the center for a couple of seconds and disconnect it, and it connects to the mac.  Sometimes, for whatever reason it asks for a PIN, sometimes not.  Either way, it works perfectly.
The thing that's throwing me is what to do when I'm done - if I turn off bluetooth, put my computer to sleep, or turn off the controller by holding down the PS button, reconnecting later on is a bit off from what I'd expect.
I make sure bluetooth is on, and press the PS button in the center of the controller, and the lights in the back start blinking fast (about twice as fast as when charging or during the normal connection process).  The controller shows connected in the bluetooth menu, and appears to work fine (although I haven't tried it out very long like this) but the lights continue to blink quickly the whole time!  The only way I can manage to get the blinking to stop is to disconnect the bluetooth connection, and reconnect via the "connect USB, press button, disconnect USB" method.
It's not a deal breaker for me, but I'd really like to just be able to grab the controller and go without digging up a cable every time, and was curious if any other Mavericks users had this problem or a workaround?  Or do I really need to do the wired setup every time I pair the controller to my mac?   I suppose I could live with the blinking lights, but darn is it annoying!
I've tried searching online, and a lot of the info I stumble across either mentions older verisons of Mac OS X with a different bluetooth menu and slightly different things than I'm seeing, or simply don't mention reconnecting after pairing the device.  (And is there a difference between "paired" and "connected" in this instance - it shows as "paired" after the time it asked for a PIN, but only "connected" normally.
The controller is a legit, first-party Sony controller, (as far as I can tell) that was marked "official playstation accessory" (or something along those lines) on the packaging and bought new from a local Gamestop.   I don't think they'd sell me one of the knock-off controllers as a legit one at a brick and mortar.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • I recently updated my MacBook Pro and now it says I need to restart every time I turn the computer on.  It is on a grey screen.

I have not used my MacBook Pro for a few months and when I started it up did all the microsoft and system updates.  Now it will not turn on and it goes to a grey page that state "You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button untilmitmturns off, then press the Power button again." I have done this several times and keep arriving at the same page.

OK, then there is little else to do other than to reinstall OS X.
Make sure you removed everything connected to the MBP including any USB devices.
If your Mac came with a System Install DVD, then insert it and hold the c key while starting your Mac. This will boot from the DVD instead of your internal disk.
If you find the grey screen reappears then it may not have restarted from the disc, so try again. You have to get past this step to do anything. If you can't, the problem may be a dirty or damaged DVD or an inoperative optical drive.
When it gets to the Mac OS C Utilities screen, select Disk Utility and repair your hard disk. Record any errors that it finds, since your problem may be due to a failed hard disk. If that is the case, the failure will probably arise again.
Then, reinstall OS X. Reinstalling is non-destructive to your user accounts or data.
If your Mac is running Lion, or Mountain Lion, you can boot OS X Recovery and perform all the above without a disc.

Hi I just got my iPad 2 and updated it to ios7 . Here is my problem: my Chinese input doesn't work , I need to restart every time . Is it the problem of the iPad? Or iOS 7??

    Hi Eric Ferguson,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • My bluetooth needs to be paired every time I start the car

can anyone give me any help with the problem that my new 3G iphones needs to be unpaired and paired again every time I start the car (Range Rover). My original iphone (once paired) connected automatically each time. Has the bluetooth way of working changed on the 3G. Any advice appreciated.

The bluetooth stack of the iPhone 3G is not working. if you check on the www.bluetooth.com web site, iphone 3G IS NOT APPROVED for bluetooth compatibility ...
After debugging, I found that the L2CAP of the iPhone 3G is not answering properly the Bluetooth request from the hand free profile.
Apple should not advertise bluetooth 2.0, they are not compatible.
PS: the admin deleted my previous post, explaining the detal about it.
Is Apple aware of the problem?

  • I used to be able to access Appleworks. Now every time I hit the ICON, it just keeps stating I need to either relaunch, ignore or report. I recently changed my internet service to wireless from dial-up, would this cause appleworks not to open?

I used to be able to access Appleworks. Now, every time I hit the icon, it tried to open but doesn't. I recently upgraded to wireless internet from dial-up. Would this be the problem?

There is more than just the plist to delete for AppleWorks. They must all be deleted at the same time to be effective. To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • Need to restore every time I connect iPod?

My iPod (new nano, v1.0.1 software) works just fine. Plays music like a champ. iTunes (7.4.3.1, WinXP) works as expected, too. However, every time I connect the iPod, iTunes declares that it is in recovery mode and needs to be restored before it can be used w/ iTunes. It restores just fine, but I'd like to be able to bypass this step.

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore

Try plugging your ipod into your computer. Then start up itunes. Let it load everything. Then click on your ipod and play a song from your ipod's library. Not your itunes library. If it plays the song, then go ahead and stop it, disconnect your ipod, and check the content once again.
I had the same problem and beleive it or not, this worked. I synced my ipod like 5 times before finding this answer on the web. Let me know if I need to clerify anything.

In v6 airport utility "Join a wireless network" is not available once the TC is setup.
You must reset to factory and try again using the selection options.. and it can fail or not come up.. This is an extremely poor way to setup a TC.. and you should NEVER EVER DO IT.. that is why apple removed it. Since you are joining wireless it makes no difference where the TC is located.. since it would become a dumb AP and turn off its ethernet ports.
Place it right next to your main modem router, plug in by ethernet, and select bridge mode and create a wireless network. Never use Join a wireless network..
However for completeness here is the method.
How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?
    Never ever do it.
If you need internet by wireless and backup to the TC.. then simply plug the TC directly into the Mac.
Run dual network.. Setup explained here.
Using Time Capsule hardwired to Mac for back-up only.

  • Firefox is not working after restart. Need to reinstall every time I am starting PC.

    Hello everyone,
I was happily using Firefox untill few days ago. Since then Firefox takes about five minutes to start (you cant see in taskbar or Application in task manager, just in Processes in task manager). When it finaly opens the first window it is not responding and there just blank window). It does the same in safe mode.
I tried to reinstall it several time, with deleting every Firefox related files on computer (following every relevant instruction from Support). I tried to backup my profile and start with new one after reinstall. Every time with same result: Firefox works perfectly after reinstall (even when I transfer files from old profile, every bookmark is right), but when I restart computer the problem is back.
I checked PC for malware and viruses by Avast, there should be now collision with other software since I did not install anything recently. I have cleaned registres, cache and cookies with CCleaner.
I am running 64-bit Windows 7 Lenovo E430, everything worked perfectly for half a year. Only problem I can relate to is a warning message about low free space on system drive, which occured at the same time problems with Firefox started (but it is now even true, I have 5 GB of free space on system drive).
I found other unresolved topics, one of them with same system configuration as mine.

Any suggestions before I desperately change to Firefox Portable?

Why not install and try Firefox portable, it may well be a good troubleshooting step. Try running it from an external memory stick.
    The threads you referred to
    * [/questions/956861] was closed but never solved
    *[/questions/958824] similar
    Some system information would help
*How much RAM is installed ?
*What is the total size of the Hard Disk Drive ?
*What is the current amount of free-space in GB ? and as a percentage ?
I try not to use Windows but certainly at one stage a rule of thumb was 20-25% free space should be available. Under about 12% defragging of a disk would likely fail. A page file would need to be larger than the amount of RAM maybe 1.5X , and a hibernate file would be the size of the RAM.
    * Do not Hibernate if you are low on HDD space.
I suggest you proceed as follows
#Answer the above questions. I worry you have a lack of diskspace.
#Do a full scan with multiple and up-to-date anti-malware tools. Do not rely on Avast alone. No tool picks up everything. Report back what you scanned with and what was found.
#Backup and keep whatever profiles may be good or may contain recent information such as passwords and bookmarks, but do not use them yet.
#Download a new installer then Do a clean reinstall of Firefox, ensuring that the program folders are deleted before you re-install.
#Now restart, you expect the first restart to work. Close down and try again does it now work OK ?
The detailed instructions in the thread you read [/questions/958824#answer-436552] should help you.
If you have continuing problems is this after a restart of Firefox, or a restart of the Windows Operating System ?

  • HELP Needed ASAP! Curve Not Turning On, Red Flashing Lights!

    Hi,
I have a Blackberry curve 8310. I plugged my curve into my mac to do a software update. Midway through, my phone shut off and hasn't worked since. The battery is fully charged. The phone is off and won't turn on. Additionally, there is a red LED light blinking twice every few seconds. I think I found an article on blackberry.com's knowledge database that diagnosed my issue, but my problem now is that because the curve isn't turning on/off, it's not connecting to my mac's desktop manager. So I can't do anything the article tells me to do. What should I do now? I need help ASAP!
Here's the link to the article: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB19915
    Thanks in advanced!

Hello Asmro and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
It can take up to 30 minutes for the Mac to connect to the BlackBerry.
I would remove your battery and connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Once it comes up there is no software installed, re-insert the battery and follow the article KB19915.
Let me know how you make out.

  • Need to reset every time I turn iPod on

For the past day every time my standard 20GB click-wheel iPod has turned off, both from me manually doing it and inactivity, I need to reset it to get it to come back to life (that is, hold the menu and select buttons). It's almost as if it is freezing every time it is off. Has anyone else come across this problem before and would be able to assist me in this matter? It's pretty frustrating. Thanks very much.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
