Router Guide and Modem Guide
Introduction:
Having issues trying to get your PS3, or XBOX 360 from Strict, or Moderate NAT? Want to get Type 2, "Open" status? Then follow this guide step for step.
(Please refer to your manual or other posts if you are unsure how to access a certain step, or post a quick reply on the forum. You can usually access your Linksys router via Internet Explorer by typing 192.168.1.1 - password is usually admin, username blank or admin as well.)
All of these steps were performed on the following test setup:
1 - Laptop PC (Windows XP)
1 - PS3 Console
1 - Motorola Cable Modem (SB6120)
1 - Linksys Router (WRT310N V1)
Firmware Update:
1)   Download the latest firmware for your router
2)   Install firmware onto router.
3)   Wait 1 minute after it has finished
4)   Unplug your Cable or DSL Modem's power, and ALL other devices that connect to the router. Leave them off.
5)   Click the "Reset to factory defaults" button in the router."
6)   Wait 1 minute after the lights stop flashing erratically.
7)   Physically go to the router, using a pointed object press the "Reset" button and HOLD for 30 seconds, then release.
8)   Access the router interface (example: 192.168.1.1)
Quick Tips and Information:
*The following settings are assuming you are now at "Default" settings. If you are not, than some settings may have been overlooked and you may have the wrong settings.
*You MUST use a WIRED connection for these steps. You can even use your PS3 or Xbox 360, and use the browser to access the router if your console is a wired connection. That is what I had to do, because my laptop is wireless only.
*The biggest mistake people make, is not clicking "Save Settings" at the bottom of each page, before moving to the next section. You MUST click "Save Settings" on each little page. Including the sub-pages. This is a huge deal. Even though the settings will "Stay" how you clicked them, they do not actually go into effect unless you hit "Save Settings" on every page.
*At this stage, any unnecessary devices must be turned off. Only the router and one device should be connected through wired Ethernet. Use that device to perform the following steps:
SETUP > Basic Setup
9)   Internet Connection Type: Automatic DHCP
10) MTU: Manual, 1500
11) DHCP Server: Enabled
12) Start IP Address: 192.168.1.2
13) Maximum Number of Users: 2 (set for how many devices you have. 1 laptop, 1 ps3 = 2)
14) Client Lease Time: 0
15) Time Zone: Set for your time, and "Check" automatically adjust for daylight savings.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
16) DDNS and Mac Address Cloning tabs should have "Disabled" option set.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
WIRELESS > Basic Wireless Settings
17) Change to "Manual"
18) Network Mode: Wireless-G Only (My laptop is wireless and has a G-card. Set accordingly)
19) SSID: set this to something you like: (example Pro Gamer)
20) Standard Channel: 11
21) SSID Broadcast: Disabled
22) Wireless Security and Mac Filter tabs should have "Disabled" option set.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
WIRELESS > Advanced Wireless Settings
23) AP Isolation: Disabled
24) Frame Burst: Enabled
25) Basic Rate: All
26) Transmission Rate: 54 Mbps (I am using wireless G. Set accordingly, but do not use auto.)
27) CTS Protection Mode: Disabled
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
SECURITY > Firewall
28) SPI Firewall Protection: Disabled
29) "Uncheck" ALL options: Filter Anonymous Internet Requests, Filter Multicast, Filter Internet NAT Redirection, Filter          IDENT, Proxy, Java, Active X, Cookies.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
30) VPN Pass-through tab: should have everything "Enabled"
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
APPLICATION AND GAMING > All Tabs
31) Skip this section for now, however if you did NOT reset your router to defaults before beginning. UNDO anything you         already have enabled on each of the five tabs.
ADMINISTRATION > Management
32) Router Password: change to something you use
33) Web Utility Access via Wireless: Disabled
34) Remote Management: Disabled
35) UPnP: Disabled. Including the 2 options below it.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab
36) On the Diagnostics tab, click "Reboot" (may be located on very first page under “Setup”)
37) Restart whatever machine you are currently using to do this.
38) Turn on all devices that will be connecting to the router, except the cable/dsl modem.
39) Log into the router with your new password. On the first, page you should see "DHCP Reservation" click this. At the top, you should see one device named PS3-something probably numbers. If it is blank but there is an IP address, that is okay too. Click the box to the right side of it. Your other devices should be there too, such as laptops and consoles, etc. Click the box next to each of them. Then Click, "Add Clients" Now you have just assigned a Static IP Address without going through the hassle of doing it manually. Now you will always have the same IP Address for each device.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab
40) Go to "Application and Gaming" click on the "DMZ" tab. Change DMZ to "Enabled."
Source IP Address: "ANY"
41) Now for the most important part. Most people use destination IP Address. However, if for some reason your IP address of your device changes, well then you are screwed. So instead, click MAC Address, then click "DHCP Client Table" and then "Select" the device that you GAME on, such as PS3 or Xbox360. Click "Close."
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab
***** IF you game on multiple devices, such as a desktop computer, and a ps3. You must DISABLE DMZ, and instead ENABLE UPnP. Please be sure to also enable the 2 options right Below UPnP. Many people do not enable the third, and sometimes even the second option. This causes hosting/joining issues, as the ports do not open/close properly. If you only have 1 gaming device, DMZ is the better choice. However, if you game on more than 1 device, use UPnP.
***** DO NOT ENABLE DMZ & UPnP TOGETHER.
42) Go to "Administration" > "Diagnostics" > "Reboot"
43) Restart ALL devices (Except cable/dsl modem) then connect them to the router.
44) I would connect my laptop now, by using the dell wireless manager I have, use the wizard to find "Non-Broadcasting"       devices. Then I manually type in my SSID: (Pro Gamer) it pops up. Click "Connect,” then "Lock" then "Apply"
45) For my PS3 I turn it on, go to Network Settings, then Connection Settings, "CUSTOM"
Leave everything Automatic or "Default" except for these:
MTU: 1500 / UPnP: Disabled (If DMZ is enabled on the router) / UPnP: Enabled (If UPnP is enabled on the router)
If your console (ps3/xbox360) was the wireless device, then simply select, "Wireless" and click manual SSID type "Pro Gamer" or whatever your SSID is, then continue with the rest of the settings. Security should be none/disabled.
ALMOST DONE!
This next tip is almost completely UNKNOWN by the gaming community. However, it is spectacular. Did you know the cable companies increase their speeds over time for FREE? Here is how to get your free upgrade. Even if your speed does not change, this will upgrade your Cable Modem's firmware! (DSL modems must be done manually, check online.)
Use a 7/16 wrench if connections are too tight.
While the Modem is OFF, unscrew the coax cable from the modem. PAY ATTENTION to this step. Now unscrew the other side from the wall or splitter. Then, REVERSE them. Reconnect the coax cable to your modem using the OTHER side (the one that was plugged into the wall), and vice versa. Make sure they are snug, but do not over tighten.
What does this do? Well I do not know the exact inner workings, but my friend who works for Comcast told me about this trick. It forces their system to re-register your Cable Modem. So now, you get a new IP Address, and it forces your modem to check for the latest firmware update. Along with that, come your increased speeds for FREE.
a)   Now, plug in the power to your modem. Wait until all lights are steady.
b)   Then go to your computer, (Do not use the PS3 or Xbox for this step)
c)   Type 192.168.100.1 (might be different for your modem, Google it)
d)   This is your MODEM's page.
e)   Look around for an option that says, "Reset to Defaults"
f)   Click "Reset to Defaults"
g)   Wait 30 seconds. It will not do anything.
h)   Now, you must click the other option, "Restart Cable Modem"
It will now clear out the memory, check for new firmware, get an updated IP address, and hopefully give you improved speeds!
That is all. Happy gaming! Visit www.speedtest.net and www.pingtest.net to test your connections.

Hey thanks for this, but one thing I have to ask is about the modem part. I unhook the cables and reversed them and then turned on the modem the lights are on and stable now. I have a sb6121 and when the modem is completely active it goes green, blue, blue, green, which is power, downstream, upstream and then online. But when I did what you said it is green, blue, "green"!, green. So since its different do I wait for the upstream to turn back to blue, or do I have to call comcast and give them the mac address again? I have been waiting for 5 mins so far and don't want to restore defaults and restart till I know I should for sure.

  • Xbox 360 and nas storage for streaming media

    Hi there,
I have an xbox 360 and watch movies on it through my network that are stored on my home PC, this means that I have to have my home PC on whenever I want to watch a movie. What I would like to do is have a NAS storage device that I can store all my movies on that is on the same notwork so that I can then watch the movies on my xbox without the need for the PC being on. Obviously I would want the NAS to be seen by the computer's I have on my network also.
I way thinking about getting this item Western Digital - My Book Live 1TB External Home Network Drive - Black but am not sure if the xbox will see it? or is there a better solution for around the same price which is expandable?
    Thanks.

You'd have to get a real home or business NAS product to stream to the 360 and those are not in the same price range as the product you are looking at.

  • WRT160N V3 Xbox 360 trouble router randomly resetting PLEASE HELP

For Christmas 2009, I received the wrt160n v3 Linksys by Cisco router. This router worked fine until about early November of 2010, when I would turn on my xbox to play a multiplayer game, and the router would randomly reset and i would lose my connection, as well as all the computers connected to the router would lose their connection to the internet. I actually sent that one back to linksys through an rma and received a new one of the same model and version, and I am still having the same problem. The router even resets when I am not on my xbox, simply just on my laptop. It is incredibly frustrating and cannot seem to find any help on the internet. Does anyone else have this problem? Are there any solutions? Is it my router or could it be my xbox screwing everything up? Any help is welcome, thank you very much

nevermind my router just reset while playing xbox. mtu is 1365, i unchecked that box, and opened my nat type, and it still reset. im starting to get extremely dissatisfied with your products

  • Problem with my xbox 360 and ps3

I have an The Sound Blaster? X-Fi Platinum Fatalty with front PanelAnyway, I'm trying to hook up my 360 to my x-fi so I can get surround sound. I plug the optical cable to the digital input on the front Panel digital-in then?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I have tried restoring the network settings and i have restarted router. I am just so disappointed because my ipod is the only one out of all my friends and family that does this(I know about 15 people with ipod touches and one with iphone). My router works fine with my ps3, xbox 360, and laptop. By the way, its not just my router. It does it with any of them. I have had friends that say their ipod has problems with album artwork too. And, if it makes a difference, it started doing this after i got an update via itunes. Also, the restores made it take longer to reconnect to the router so i really think its just my ipod. I guess im just gonna have to deal with it. Maybe version 3.0 will fix it just as 2.1 or so destroyed it.
One thing i just dont understand is why geek squad did what did to my ipod. I told them that it wouldnt stay connected to my router and the guy tested my battery and hard drive. What does this have to do with that? He also told me to restore it. I mean, no offense to geek squad, but my brother could go in there and teach these guys how to do this. He didnt go to college for this stuff either but he built all of our computers and anytime we have a problem, he knows exactly what to do. He also owns his own computer business and helps people fix their computers. The only problem is that he hates apple so he knows nothing about it. Apple is getting so annoying, coming out with newer versions of things every few months and making so much crap that no one needs. I just cant wait until microsoft steps it up and makes a touch screen, internet and email compatible, zune. Sorry, this is just so annoying and disappointing.

  • Correct settings for xbox 360

Hi i have an older airport extreme with wireless N and dual band signal.  I'm trying to connect my xbox 360 to it wirelessly for xbox live.  I know i'm not the first one to ask this question but truth be told, I had it working fine until apple's latest update in late January 2012. Since then the xbox will connect and have a good signal (at least 3 bars and usually 4) on xbox's test screen.  I've looked for an answer to my problem but it seems no one has posted anything about this yet because the software for the airport and airport utility are so new.  What will happen when playing a game is it will connect and start out fine with a good transfer rate (not great but good because my laptop somehow has a higher transfer rate. laptop 144mbps. xbox 360 65mbps) But after playing an online game the transfer rate dramatically drops, and drops so much that it becomes extremely laggy and then kicks me out of the game saying something like lost connection to server, making any online game unplayable.  If i restart the xbox and play the same game online, the same thing happens.  Like i said none of these problems were happening before this recent software update.  As a side note, the software update also seemed to remove some useful options from the router like the ability to increase the power of the signal (i really dont unstand why apple would remove features but whatever). So if anyone has a fix or suggestion, please reply to this.

i basically answered my own question. i reverted back to 7.6 firmware and got rid of 7.6.1. And now everythings fine. Thank you apple for supplying me with an update that made it worse.

  • WRE54G + WRT54G + Xbox 360 Problems

I recently plugged my WRE54g back in to try and improve the signal strength in my basement, where my xbox 360 is (router is on 2nd floor). Got the extender working, all blue lights, signal seems to be stronger. However, the xbox fails the xbox live and media tests at the IP category, so something is wrong in the IP address area. I have tried changing the router's IP to match the extender's, resulting in problems on every computer in the house, so i set it back to 192.168.1.1. Then, I tried setting the extender's IP to 192.168.1.2 (after very much difficulty, the extender setup page freezes and says it lost connection whenever I make a change, still having the problem), yet my xbox still fails the test even though the extender IP is within the range of the router. I have no idea what to try now, I have tried googling every possible combination of words to try and find help, and have gotten nowhere. So if anyone could help, please, please, do so!

"Nothing but red light of death on the extender. Is it supposed to have the same SSID, channel # and security code as the router?"
    answer: yes
heres something i found for you.I hear they haven't made any expanders for the N series yet. but follow this guide i found, and you might get it to work.
First of all the computer or laptop MUST be hardwired to the router.
Second, the WRE54G MUST also be hard wired to the router.
Then, reset the WRE54G by pressing the reset button for at least 30 seconds. (You probably get a blue and red steady light....that is fine). Hopefully, if all goes right, this will allow you to now communicate with the WRE54G. (Auto Configuration is not possible).
Now to test this: Go into your start menu and click on "Run" and type in the comannd "CMD"....This will give you a DOS prompt window. Now type in "Ping 192.168.1.240" (this is the preset IP Address of the WRE54G.) At this point you will get several lines of numbers and stuff...ignore everything except at the bottom where it say's "Packets: Sent = 4, Recieved = 4, Lost = 0 0% loss>. If this is the case then you are looking good!
Now, open a web browser and type in 192.168.1.240 and wait for the Linksys page to come up from your WRE54G.....when/if this does come up then you have won the battle!
Next, and this is also VERY IMPORTANT. In the configuration of your WRE54G the SSID MUST be the same as your router!!!! Otherwise they will not communicate with each other. Also the channels should be the same. Now click on "save setting", and it this time or shortly there after you should have 2 blue lights on your WRE54G. At this time you can unplug it and place it anywhere in your house!
Please note: at the time of all this configuration my security on my router was disabled and later also on my expander.

  • WRT1900 & 2 XBox 360 = Sudden Disconnects

    Hi there,
We have been using the WRT1900AC with two Xbox Ones without a problem. But recently when we startup two Xbox 360's and game for a while (5 mins max) the WRT1900AC disconnects/reboots. The LED's on the Frontpanel all go off and it's starts up again.
    All XBox's are connected wired.
    Mediapriority is off.
Ports for Xbox live are triggered.

  • Retrieve Xbox 360 after purchasing laptop

I bought a laptop that meets the requirements for the free Xbox 360 student deal on July 8th 2012 but I didn't know the deal was going on at  the time. Is there a way I can still claim the free Xbox 360? I am a current student and have all the requirements met to get the Xbox 360.
    Thank you for the help.

    Are you using Linksys Router??
If so let me know the Model number ....

  • XBOX 360 & TC

Can someone please confirm that the latest FW Update for the TC resolved the problem of not being able to use the Microsoft Wireless adapter with TC in 802.11n mode?
It's a hassle to have to run the TC in 802.11b-only mode....
    Thanks!

I don't know if the Xbox 360 wireless router works with the Airport Extreme but you should get the Airport Express for your Xbox 360 Router. It is the same price as that router. What is also good is that is a wired connection and uses wifi n network so it is fast the microphone voice is crystal clear. Anyway, use a ethernet cable to connect the Xbox to the express and connect the express to the extreme as 'Join Network' and make sure it says allow ethernet connections underneath the Airport Express. It worked for me.

  • Wireless kicks off laptop when xbox 360 turns

I have been having this problem for about the last month where when I turn on my xbox 360 my router will kick my fiancees laptop off the wireless. I have a wrt54g v8 router and the wireless has been working perfectly up until this. Anyone have any suggestions??

Open the setup page of router using 192.168.1.1...check the firmware on router's status page if it is not 8.00.5 upgrade it to the latest firmware...reset the router for 30 secs...power cycle complete network. Now, once you have done this settings make sure you forward the ports 80 & 3074 for the static ip address you assign to your XBOX-360....it will definately work.

  • WRT54G Issues with Xbox 360

Okay, I got this Wireless router so that my family could get more then one computer eventually. Now we only have one computer still but we have added an Xbox 360 to our network recently. However, the version 6 that we bought is not on xbox 360 compatible router list and encounters some problems. Namely that it causes some of my friends games to be unjoinable and doesn't allow chatting with them. I need to figure out how to get this router to be able to work at full efficiency with my 360 or else I will constantly be hooking and unhooking the DSL cable and directly connecting to my modem. I'm curious if running it as a router instead of a gateway may help with this. I'm also curious if anyone has already fixed this problem. Any more data needed by you I will gladly provide. Oh, also, the ISP is Windstream.

Like, when i put the game in the console and it starts loading, it makes this "click clank" sound for about 6 seconds and then it goes away. The noise is loud enough for you to hear as long as your about atleast 15 feet away. I need to know if i should be concerned about this or just ignore it.
By the way, i have warranty and i dont know if BestBuy will replace or fix my xbox because of this annoying noise.
    Help Please... :-(

I am guessing you are talking about the GSBTP plan sold by BB. Take the 360 in and they will send it out and replace it with a refurb in 7-10 business days.
