PSD Files black - Elements - 6

Hi,
I have been working with Elements - 6 and now have "saved as" PSD files showing as black in a storage folder.  In the past they did appear as a contact size image file - - viewable.
When clicking on the black PSD file it will open into Photoshop Elements - 6 and can be processed normally.  When processing is complete and the image is "saved as" a jpg in a storage folder it is viewable as a contact size image.
I may have changed a setting inadvertantly that has caused this problem.  Can someone advise me how I can get my PDS images to be "saved as"  a viewable contact image size file.
Thanks Bob

John R. Ellis,
As a new participant on the Adobe Elements Forum I really appreciate your response to my posting.
I was unaware that Adobe no longer supports PSD files in Windows Explorer.   In the past they have been very convenient.  But I have to tell you - - I am still getting viewable PSD thumbnails in the horizontal format??
My copy of Elements - 6 was purchased from a local retailer about a year ago - - and I have no third-party add-ons .  Could Adobe / Windows be providing some minimal support for the horizontal image format and not the vertical (which seems odd) or might this just be an Abobe production anomaly?
Thanks again,
Bob

  • When I open a psd file in photoshop I don't see the layers. When I opened a psd file in elements the layers would show up.

When I was using elements and I opened a psd file that I wanted to re-edit the layers would be visable just as when I last closed the image. Now that I upgraded to photoshop and I open a psd file it opens with only the background layer. What am I doing wrong?

System info? Versions? Exact settings? PS only opening the merged view could indicate that the file contains data unique to Elements which it cannot interpret.

  • While editing saved PSD files, png elements have a white background when resized

    Hi,
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.  When I open a psd file that I previously worked on and saved, when I try to resize or in some way change the different elements(layers) of the layout, they get a white background inside the bounding box for that layer.  The different elements(layers) where pulled in from png files that had transparent backgrounds.  When I initially resize or change those layers the white background doesn't appear.  It only happens when I reopen the saved psd file to make some changes to it.  What do I need to do to stop that from happening?
Thanks in advance for you help!

You can't drag from the project bin in PSE 6 and 7. Items you move this way become a kind of semi-smart object on a special passthrough layer. Use copy/paste or drag from the layers palette of the png file into the main image window of the psd file.

  • Opening .psd files in Elements

Can Photoshop Elements open .psd files created from older versions of "regular" Photoshop, including Photoshop 7.0? And can .psd files created in Elements be opened in Photoshop 7.0? Thanks.

Yes, it is possible to open psds created from other versions in the current version and vice versa.
however, if you have adjustment layers created from full versiion photoshop, thay can be opened but not edited in PSE. They come with a lock icon.

If you are saving a PSD and you want it be compatible with other versions, it is advisable to have - maxmize file compatibilty option in preferences as "always".

  • Will iPhoto accept in its library a PSD file from Elements 12 Editor?

I have Elements 12 on my Macbook.  I have duplicate libraries with the iPhoto library and the Elements Organizer.  I know I can set up a filing system with Smart Albums in iPhoto but I don't know if I use the Elements 12 Editor if iPhoto will accept a PSD file from that Editor.

iPhoto doesn't like psd files from anywhere. JPEG and TIFF are the way to go. Why are you keeping duplicate copies of all your photos? Eventually you should choose one organizer or another. Aside from making you crazy, you'll run of disk space pretty fast, unless you have hardly any photos.

  • Is there a way to replace an image file within a PSD in photoshop elements 13?

I've got 12 separate PSD files, with one image consistently in every document, but resized differently and very specifically for each of the documents. I've made some changes to the jpeg image separately, but instead of dropping the new image into each individual PSD and having to arduously match it to the previous version of the image, does anybody know if there a way to just ask elements to replace it by directing it to the new version of the jpeg?
In each PSD, the image is by itself on a layer of its own, nice and simple.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.. it seems like a simple thing to do, I just cant find how!
    Thanks!

Offhand I doubt this can be done in PSE, at least in my dinosaur version 2. Maybe someone else knows if this can be done in 13.  Sorry
But perhaps you can use the following trick.
Here I selected the sunflower, did a copy/paste to create a new layer, and moved the new area out of alignment.
Change the blending mode of the mis-aligned layer to "Difference".
Use the arrow keys to nudge the layer so that the result is totally black.
Change the blend mode back to "Normal" and, voila!, the layers are perfectly aligned.

  • PSD files into Premier Elements?

I have used Photohop Elements for years. I am familiar with it, do I need to resize a PSD file before taking it into Premier Elements to add to a video project?

What is the size of your scrapbook page in Photoshop Elements 12 - 12 inches by 12 inches document. If so, we need to know the pixel dimensions for the scrapbook page (width and height in pixels). Inches have no meaning in video. Does your plan include any possibilities for a 4:3 or 16:9 scrapbook page?
What is your intended export for your Timeline content - burn to disc (DVD-VIDEO standard or widescreen on DVD disc, AVCHD on DVD disc, or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc OR file saved to the computer hard drive in a video format?
Video is typically 4:3 or 16:9 in constrast to what you may have, that is, 12 inches x 12 inches at 300 pixels/inch which would be 3600 x 3600 pixels. And, one usually sets the project preset to match the properties of the source media. There is no project preset to match those dimensions.
Is your project going to consist of only these scrapbook pages? If so, the following should be noted.
All Premiere Elements projects have to have a project preset. The default for Premiere Elements 12 is NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 (1920 x 1080 pixels) or its PAL counterpart. If there is no project preset to match the properties of your source, then you could end up with your image with black borders. (The black borders could be filled in by placing a background on Video 1 and your scrapbook page of Video 2 directly above that background on Video 1. In that way, the background would show through the black (transparency) areas in the scrapbook).
    However...
There is a preference which lets you direct the program to import the source (your scrapbook page) and automatically scale it to the frame size of the project preset. This is the case that I described above. But the preferences can also be set to disable this option called "Default Scale to Frame Size". In your case, what you will see with this option disabled, is your image zoomed in the Edit area monitor. Then you can scale it down to fit the space provided for it in the Edit area monitor. This would cut off some of your page. You could decide what you wanted shown. And, if you scale to fit it all into the frame, black borders.
Now if the situation were that you had video sources and wanted to include your scrapbook pages in the presentation, then I would set the project preset to match the video properties and then fit the scrapbook pages to that project preset. Filling in some more details would allow me to fine tune.
But, back to your original question of sizing of those .psd scrapbook pages....which are probably 3600 x 3600. I suspect that the practical answer is going to be import them as is and let the program resize, allowing for black borders to be filled in my a background of some sorts. But, how many of those 3600 x 3600 pixels you can import without stressing out the project will depend on your computer resources and just how many of these scrapbook pages are to be used.
The above is my take on the details that you have described thus far.
Please review and consider and then let me know if you have questions or need clarification.
    Thanks.

Add On....For now, please ignore the mention of 1000 x 750 pixels 4:3 until we define your project to a great extent.

  • Why is Photoshop Elements 8 not saving a psd file as a pdf now that I purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro?

Why is Adobe Elements 8 not saving a psd file as a pdf after I started using Adobe Acrobat XI Pro instead of my CS3 Pro? Both Adobe software is up to date and before I switched to Acrobat XI Pro, it worked fine. Help please...

You aren't talking to Adobe here. But still...Is it by any chance asking for a QUALIFYING product? If so, you purchased an UPGRADE and now need to give the serial number of the OLDER product (Acrobat 9 or X) which you must own to be able to use the upgrade. Simples.

  • Trying to change solid white to transparent in a black to white gradient in one layer of a psd file

    Hi everyone
I have a multilayered psd file. All layers should remain opaque except the black to white gradient layer where I need the white to be transparent. So that when I oplace the final psd on top of a block of solid colour in Indesign the gradient shows the background colour through where the black fades off.
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Mark

Thanks for your reply. I am attaching a lowres psd file where I need to save it with top layer opaque and 'shadow' layer transparent. So that when I place it over solid colour in Indesign the gradient allows the background colour to show through where the balck is fading out.
    cheers

  • Why can't I see the layers of cs4 .psd files passed to me in photoshop elements 11?

why can't I see the layers from cs4 .psd files passed to me in photoshop elements 11?

You should be able to see normal layers, but PSE doesn't understand layer groups/sets or comp layers. The inexpensive add-on elements+ from simplephotoshop.com will let you expand layer groups. (If you also have Premiere Elements installed you should be able to see layer groups in PSE without adding anything.)

  • PSD files have black borders around the image edge

I've just uploaded an image file in PSD format to a folder in my Creative Cloud workspace. The image is a cutout object on single layer with transparency. It views fine in Photoshop and also in Quick Look/Preview but when it's uploaded I have a pixelated black border around the perimeter of the object in the layer. I thought it might just be the preview but it's the same when I open it in Photoshop Touch.
    Is anyone else expereincing this?

    Hi David,
PSD files are flattened when imported into Photoshop Touch and then lose any transparency. I'm not seeing a way to import transparency other than in PSDX format which the transparency would have to have been created in PS Touch. I'm moving this post to the PS Touch forum in case I'm missing something.

  • Why do some imported jpegs, psd files show as black rectangles?

I recently scanned a dozen B&W 8x10 prints, plus a color  book dust jacket, into Photoshop, saving all to my desktop variously as jpegs, TIFFs and PSDs, then attempted to import the images to my iPhoto library. Some showed up fine but most were simply black rectangles. With Get Into I could see the file size and the format, but that's it.
One failed import was a 20MB jpeg, so file size might be an issue. But all other other failed imports were in the 2.7MB to 12MB. Suspecting file size may be the problem, I used PS to change the image size from 600dpi to 300 dpi, dropping the size to 5MB or so, and that worked. Question: Is there a size restriction on importing files to the iPhoto library? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!  John Grissim.
    MacMini dual-core Intel, OS 10.6.8, iPhoto 6.0.6, CS3 Photoshop

Black and white photos scanned as grayscale are not supported by iPhoto.  Actually it's the color profile, Dot Gain 20%,  which is used that causes the problem.  CMYK color mode photos are also not supported by iPhoto.
For PSD files if you have an alpha channel that can cause problems in iPhoto.
With iPhoto size does'nt matter.  I've imported 100 MB files without a problem. In resizing you mighty have changed the profile or something that made it usable.
Scan all b/w photos as color.  You'll get the same result but they will be iPhoto compatible.
If you want to conver the current b/w scans without rescanning you can try one of the conversions apps available at  Toad's Cellar.

  • Does elements 13 support saving psd files

  • Black background of .psd file appears dull green?

Hi, after importing a .psd file into FCP its black background appears dull green...any suggestions as to how to prevent this? ...to make the background black in FCP like it was in Photoshop?
    thanks

You're lucky that black/green was the only problem you saw. CMYK and Grayscale graphics can cause headaches in FCP. Clients graphic departments send me PSD's all the time and the first thing I do when I get them is check to make sure they are RGB.
