PSE 7 won't oepn

I have been using photoshop 7 for a considerable time nad just last week it stopped working. When I try to open the software up it says it can't open because some files are missing.
I have searched the net but cannot find a resolution.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks
Andy

Hi Ken,
Thanks again.
interestingly I've just tried to open dreamweaver and that asked me for the serial number which it has never done before. Something has clearly gone awry. Luckily I've found the box and inserted it and all is well with that.
The only change I made between both software packages working and then not was to upload a security update for windows 7.
Arghhhhhh!!!
I'm decidedly unimpressed with Adobe when you have to resort to searching for answers on a public forum because they can't be bothered to offer support to their customers. It's disgraceful. Sign of the times I think.
Thanks anyway.

Andy

  • I am receiving an error message and PSE won't open

Hi. I've been using this laptop (Windows Vista) and PSE7 since the beginning of this year.
Last night, when I went to open up PSE, I got this message:
Adobe Photoshop Elements(Editor)  Has Stopped Working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.'
But, it doesn't give me a solution.
I rebooted. Then I shut down and turned off the computer over night.
    PSE is still not working.
    Any suggestions?
What do I need to do to get it going?
    Thanks,
    Charlene

Unfortunately, there are many reasons why the PSE Editor might crash, and often it is hard to diagnose quickly the reason for the crash.   Here are some steps you can take to try to fix the problem:

  • .mov opened in PSE CS5, saved as .psd, now PSE won't reopen it

I'm working on masking some video, and figured out a workflow that starts in Photoshop Extended CS5 and then moves to After Effects CS5. As instructed by this Adobe tutorial, I can do this by opening my footage (.mov's) in PSE, saving as a .psd, then adding that .psd to AE, which will read all the layers and timelines and effects as they were in PSE.
But after I save that .psd, it wont open in PSE. It gives me this message:
"Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."
even if I try to load the .psd into AE, I get this:
"The Photoshop Library operation failed because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."
Other threads (e.g.) indicate this is what happens when the file is corrupted, usually due to working off a server or with NAV. but I'm working locally (a 2x3.2ghz MacPro, OSX 10.5.8), and without Norton at all. I also duplicated the process several times (opening a .mov, altering it, saving it as .psd, and trying to reopen) and I got the same message every time. It seems unlikely that each file would get corrupted every single time...
If anyone could help, I would be much much obliged. Merry Christmas!
UPDATE: The .psd will open in PS CS3, but with plenty of CS5 stuff missing. Re-saved as a CS3 psd, and that re-opens in CS3, but not PSE or AE CS5 (as to be expected). Don't know if this matters at all. Thanks!

Is your copy of Photoshop CS5 up to date?  That does sound a little like a bug that was fixed in 12.0.1.
And the simplest answer it is. I updated, and now it's working like a charm. Thanks Chris!
(sorry bout the PSE mixup – what's PS Extended called? PSX?)

  • PSE WON'T OPEN!

PSE 6 has worked fine for years.  I've never had it crash like this.  I resolved the craches of a few days ago by deleting the TWAIN preference (I think it was a preference).  I thought all was well and it was for a few days. Now I click and immediately get a crash notice. NO blue circle like before!  I did all the maintance  a couple of days ago and even reintalled PSE several times.  I deleted everything I could that was PSE so what is left to do?
    Please HELP!

Did you reset your application preference files? I ask because if they are stored outside of the program folder and are not fixed by an uninstall/reinstall.

  • PSE instal & iPhoto 11 probe

    Hi there
I have just installed PSE on a trial on my Mac running Lion & OSX 10.7.5 with a 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5
I am trying to get PSE to talk to Iphoto 11 but I am having no luck.
All the drop down choices for importing from iPhoto do not relate and vica versa.
I thought that there would be a dropdown for iPhoto in Prefs> General but nothing exists there.
In PSE File>Import it only says Frame from Video
Doesnt sound as if it installed properly
    What should I do ?
    Many thanks
    Steve

No, that's fine. Do you understand that you can't treat the iphoto library like any normal folder? That library is for iphoto's own use and you should never, never poke around in it from outside iphoto. That's the fastest way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos, so PSE won't go there.
    So you have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor in the iphoto prefs and send the photos from iphoto. Save, not Save As (you may need to set the editor preferences>saving files>on first save to Save Over Existing to make this work) and iPhoto will remember your last edited version and the original, although you have to lose the edits to get back to the original.
If you decide to do this, the actual PSE editor is in Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 11>Support Files. The one at the top level of the PSE folder is just an alias for the welcome screen.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, edit the copies, make any changes to name, format, etc, that you like, and import the edited copies as new files.

  • Pathway problem when moving files in PSE

I use PSE 6.0 and recently had to reload my operating system (OS).  After reloading my OS I reinstalled PSE 6.0 and restored my catalog to a new location on my hard drive.  I had my catalog backed up onto DVD's.  The restore worked and I went to link missing photos, b/c I did the PSE 'no no' and moved files outside of the PSE program.  It appeared that the missing links were reconnected.  I started to spot-check some of the file property locations and noticed that many of the photo properties had the restore location that I restored the catalog to.  I did not want to keep the photo in this location, so I went to move these folders and files to my external drive where I keep my pictures (I have two drives: one for video and one for photos).  When I try to move the files in PSE to my external drive it moves them to my external video drive instead.  The problem is that when I follow the pathway it moved them to, I do not have this link on my video drive.  The pathway, however, is identical to my photo pathway.  For example.  I have a picture with the property of C:/Documents and Settings/Amy/My Documents/Restore Adobe PSE 100111/My Picture Downloads/Pella Trip.  I tried to move this file to my external K drive (which is my photo drive).  In PSE I click on file then move then browse and moved the file to K:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  In PSE when I go to verify that the file was moved to that drive, instead in properties it tells me that the file location is M (my video external drive) and lists the pathway as M:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  When I go to START and click on that external drive to follow the pathway to find the photo, it is not on M.  M does not even have the pathway to follow as I do not even have M:Micah's camera in that location.  I have tried disconnecting my external drive M and tried to save the file from the C location to my K drive and then the file becomes an offline file and I have another problem.  So then I tried to reconnect that particular file listed on M but since it's not really on M, I follow the K pathway name and find the file where I requested it to be saved which was K:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  When I find the file and click on reconnect I get the message that the file already exists in the catalog.  Then in the dialog box it says M:Micha's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07 was not connected to K:Micah's camera photos/2011/May/2011/05 07.  When I click on ok to exit the dialog box my photo is then missing.  I then can't do anything with it.  The pathway in PSE won't move it b/c I can't link it.  It says the file is on my M drive, but it really isn't.  I don't know what to do next.  I would like to move my photo files/folders from C (my hard drive) to K (my external photo drive).  I do not know why PSE is moving them to M (my video drive) which doesn't take me to that file.  I have searched the forums but have found no problems similar to this.  I'm not sure what to do to fix this.  Sorry this got so long...Can anyone help me?

Highlighting a batch of images and dragging from the PSE9 Media Browser to a folder in the left hand panel, located on external HDD works fine although I’m using Vista and Windows 7 and automatically invokes the elements Move procedure.
Make sure the new folder has a blue icon to indicate it is being managed in Organizer. If not right click on the folder and choose Import to Organizer.

  • Why won't Twain source open.

PSE 1.0.1 has been working great forever. Then my computer crashed and I restored a copy of my C drive. Now PSE won't open Epson Twain for import (Epson 1650 scanner), which had worked great before. EPSON TWAIN 5 shows in the IMPORT menu, but when I click on it  I get this error:
"Could not open the Twain source. Make sure there is a valid source for your scanner in the Twain directory found in the Windows directory."
I reinstalled Epson Twain from disc twice with no good results.
In my TWAIN_32 directory there are files wiatwain.ds, ESTW5.ds, among others, and a subdirectory EPFB5 containing ESTW5.ds and others. I don't really know what a "valid source" for my scanner is.
    Can anyone advise? Thanks.

    Hi,
Please try uninstalling/ reinstalling the scanner drivers. Also, please check the cables are connected properly.
    Thanks/Tarun

  • PSE 8 Not Backing Up Media Files

I have PS Elements 8 (Windows 7 - 64 bit) with 9000 photos cataloged.  It's all fabulous EXCEPT when I do a backup (File->Backup Catalog to CD...) the backup ONLY contains the Catalog files, not the media files.  So the backup of my 27 GB of photos is only 200 MB.
My media files and my catalog files are both on the D: drive (2nd internal HD)... the Program files and Windows are installed on C:. I've tried Reconnecting (all files are connected) and Repairing the catalog (no problems found).  The backup runs just fine with no errors, it's just WAY too small.
I've tried backing up to the C: drive, the D: drive, and to DVDs all with the exact same result.
I've done a simple copy/paste of my entire folder to an external disk, so I DO have things backed up.  But I'd like to use the built-in feature so I can transfer the whole enchilada to my laptop without losing the links (laptop doesn't have a D: drive).
Anybody have any ideas why PSE refuses to backup my media?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Gary

I've been working every which way around trying to get this to work, and it just won't.  Your suggestion ("Method 4") kind of works.  But after screwing around with it the best I could get was "most" of the files reconnected with a lot of them reset to today's date for some inexplicable reason.
The resetting of the date is yet another bug.  The Reconnect command re-reads the metadata from the file, overwriting whatever is in th catalog.  If for some reason the date in the file doesn't match what's in the catalog, the date in the file wins.  And if the file is a format that doesn't support "date taken" metadata (or a format whose metadata PSE doesn't understand, such as PNG or video), then PSE will use the date-modified of the file.
But then why doesn't the "Repair" function work?  When I "Optimize" a damaged catalog why doesn't it throw an error message?
Repair and Optimize only perform a very limited set of low-level database operations -- they can't fix basic bugs in the program.
And how in the world does it allow me to run a "backup" without either actually backing up the files OR giving me an error message?  That's REALLY bad.  A feller would be pretty disappointed to try to run a Restore from that if he hadn't noticed the file size.
Yup, it's a bad bug.  For a number of reasons, I recommend that people with large catalogs use a general-purpose third-party backup:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Backing_up_your
And why DOES it think my D: drive is a removable disk?  Neither my system BIOS nor Windows shows it as "removable".  I've searched the Registry trying to find a spot to reset that for PSE without luck.  There should be a way to correct that (actually PSE just shouldn't make that mistake to start with, of course).
I believe the problem is caused by Windows, at some point in time, reporting to PSE that the drive as "removable".  PSE just records in the catalog what Windows tells it.  However, if later on Windows reports a different type (e.g. because you've upgraded to a new version of Windows), then PSE won't update the catalog.  In general, PSE's handling of multiple drives is abysmal, but some of that comes from the Windows legacy drive architecture, which is also a mess.
The only way to fix this is to get a low-level tool that can open the database file, e.g. SQLite Database Browser, and make the change.
    I'm anxiously awaiting version 8.1.
Adobe almost never ships updates to an existing version of PSE.  You have to buy the next version (e.g. 9), which ships each fall.

  • PSE 11 not recognising extra ram on an iMac

I have an iMac which had 4 gb of ram. Photoshop defaulted the usage to just under 3 gb. I installed another 8 gb of ram but PSE fails to recognise the extra ram
so I can only get it to use 3gb. If I reinstall will it recognise all my ram? Will I still have all my photos on the organiser?

    Hi smudger1939,
PSE won't recognize the extra RAM after 3072 MB. As it's the highest which a 64-bit application can use. So even if you install even another 16GB of it. I won't be able to use that one. However, it's a benefit when you are using several applications parallely. The extra RAM will be used by other applications, and will not hamper your PSE performance.
So if you want to increase the performance of PSE, reduce the history states. You can also refer to this kb article for the same:

You need to "read up" on Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), how the versions change as cameras are introduced, how ACR versions apply to versions of PSE and, generally how the various versions of "RAW" files are translated to something viewable.
The short version is that your 7100 is so new it was not included until ACR 7.4, the last of the 7.x series.  To use any version of the 7.x series you need PSE 11.  Earlier versions of PSE won't accept the 7.x series.
Adobe DNG Converter upgraded to 8.1 last week.  7.4 is history!

  • How to import photos from iPhoto Library to Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor?

I can't use Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor to edit photos from iPhoto Library. If I choose File, Open, and then select 'iPhoto Library', error message is "could not complete your request because of a program error."

You can't do it that way. Any attempt to poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto is very likely to damage the library and cause you to lose your photos, so PSE won't let you. You have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor, send the photos from iphoto, and save them without changing the name or format (you may need to adjust the editor prefs>Saving Files>On First Save to let you do this). Then iphoto will remember your original and the last edited version.
Be sure to choose this file in Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 10>Support files as your external editor, not the one at the top level of the PSE 10 folder in Applications:
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use File>Open in the PSE editor to open the images and then save them with whatever changes to name or format you like, and reimport the saved images to iphoto as new files. This way you can save as many versions as you like.

  • Deactivate Photoshop Elements 8 - Editor not opening

    Hello,
I have previously installed Elements 8.0 in my PC, and everything was working well until I changed the partition in my Hard Disk.
Ever since PSE won't run. I run the Elements Organizer manually, and it works, but whenever I want to run the Editor it keeps telling me:
"could not open a scratch file because the file could not be found."
And, After clicking ok, another box pops up and says
"could not intialize photoshop because the file could not be found."
So there's one problem..I've tried deleting the preferences file (Adobe Photoshop Prefs.PSP) but still the same problem. The Organizer works but not the Editor.
But actually, what I want to do is do a clean installation of my OS (Windows XP), but first I need to deactivate the working copy of PSE, which I can only do from the Editor (which is not opening!). How can I deactivate it?? Is there any manual way to do it without necessarily having to open the Editor?
I am afraid that if I just format my Hard Drive and then reinstall everything, it wont accept my serial key. I have installed PSE in other machine, so I need this serial key to work in my machine.
    Thank you very much!
    Ricardo

So, finally I called to Adobe Support, and after trying (without any positive outcome) to solve the error I had so that I could access the PSE8 Editor; they told me that it was not possible to deactivate PSE8 through the phone, and that if I had any problem, I should call again to the License Support phone number.
I had previously installed PSE8 on other PC, so I was worried that I could not use the only activation I had left in my notebook. However, it turns out that after formatting my hard drive and re-installing Windows, I was able to reinstall PSE8, using the serial key I've got.
It would be nice what sort of information is sent to Adobe when "activating" the software (it should be some kind of "unique" information from our PCs), so that next time we should not worry that much about deactivating the SW before formatting or reinstalling the OS, as long as it's the same computer (and that "unique" informatio still applies).
Well, thanks anyway for trying to help.
    Regards,
    Ricardo

  • Best Photo Organizer?

Relatively new to Macs but have gone in with both feet and replaced all PCs in the house.
Was using Kodak Gallery - now iPhoto but iPhoto has a ton of limitations.
Ideally I would like to set up a photo repository that could be accessed by all Macs in the house. Would Adobe's PS Elements Organizer allow me to set up a central location to store locally photos (say on a time capsule) - when logging into Adobe's PS Elements Organizer on any of the Macs (on the network) it would point to this device so all Photo Organizers on each PC would be the same? And then could these photos be backed up to Adobe's online presence automatically (I realize it comes with 20GB but would have to pay for more)?
    If not, any recomendations?

No, PSE won't do that. There are many, many other digital asset management programs you can look into, though. Adobe carousel is a subscription service, so you pay and pay. I think you are going to have to split the time capsule and the cloud, though. In other words, find a program you like for use on the network drive and then set that for backup to an online service.

  • Can IPhoto open pictures that are saved as Photoshop 7 files?

I have PhotoShop 7 and have a lot of photos that were saved in Photo Shop on Mac Classic system.  Most of these are very large.  24MB to 56MB files.  I upgraded to Mac 10.5.8 and now they will not open without a $700 upgrade from Photo Shop.  I do not need to edit the photos.  Only be able to use them.  That means they need to be reduced in size to under 1MB.  Will iPhoto open up these Photoshop pictures?

I am pretty sure that PSE will open more PSD's than iPhoto will.  Someone was really pushing PSCS.  As the first link I posted said, there are some PSD's that PSE won't open.  But iPhoto won't open those, either.
I migrated from PS7 to PSE and never had a problem.  But my files were relatively simple PSD's.
Don't take my word for it, download the free trial and try it.

  • Smart Albums and Search ignoring tags / keywords

Why is it that once images are imported into PE7, and if their keywords and tags are edited in an external editor (eg. Picasa, Photoshop), PE7 doesn't seem to recognize these new keywords/tags in Search or Smart Albums?!
The weird thing is, if I open/activate these newly edited files, I can see in thier properties that the new keywords/tags can be read by PE7, but these descriptions don't show up as matching results when we do a search box or smart albums.
    What is going on?
On the other hand, Picasa will read, update and pick up any tags and keywords that have been entered in PS7, almost instantly. Why can't PE7 do this???

It's a design limitation of PSE.  When you first import an image into PSE, it will read the metadata from the image's file (keyword tags, date/time, caption, notes, star rating) and store it in your catalog (the database where PSE stores all of its information about your images).  Once the image is imported into your catalog, PSE will never read that metadata again, so if you change it with an external tool, PSE won't see those changes.
As you've observed, a number of other programs will track changes made to a file's metadata, including Windows Live Photo Gallery and Adobe Lightroom.
