PSE 8.0 - Catalogue Problems

G/L, Many thanks for your advice but I still have a problem with PSE.  I use the Program principally as a Photo data base and for the creation of  family Albums and associated slide shows with music. As my PC Solid State C: drive was reaching capacity ( it is only 100Gb) my PC supplier advised and indeed  moved remotely the photos from the  C: drive to the D:.  This was no problem but now a good number of the photos' in my PSE Albums show the yellow question mark saying it is a missing file. The 'Reconnect' option is good if only I knew where to find the photos, I just do not fully understand how this works!  In addition, scores of Photos in the catalogue are in quadruplicate, is it possible to remove duplicates without interfering with the albums? Having spent a good number of hours /days trying to locate these 'lost files' I am getting ready to give up PSE and stick with the PC  'My Pictures'.  However will persevere a little longer-fingers crossed! I also seem to have several copies of the catalogue, probably different backups. I just wish there was a way for the PSE Program to automatically locate those photos anywhere on the PC as, not being a PC wiz I find this so  difficult which is a shame as I do like the Program. Is there any PSE experts in Cheshire, UK?  Would PSE 11/12 provide a solution? Any further suggestions would be gratefully received as my PSE is in a bit of a muddle? Many thanks Sonny Benhar [email protected]

How did you move your pictures to the EHD? Did you do a PSE backup/restore or just move them outside of PSE? If you moved them outside of PSE then your best bet(if you can do it) is to put them back from wher they came and do a backup then a restore to the new location.
Your extra catalogs are not due to doing backups, a backup makes a copy of your catalog and puts the "backed up" catalog with the "backed up" pictures. Somehow you have created the extra catalogs.

I discovered today I cannot make a PSE 11 full  catalogue backup.  The backup program appears to freeze indefinitely at the dialogue box 'Calculating Total Media Size...1%'.   I can cancel the backup activity and return to the main program. I have used the Catalogue Management Tools 'Optimize' and 'Repair' without any fix or change. Any suggeations on how to resolve the problem?

If you contact Adobe Support using chat they can take care of deactivation for the inaccessible installation.
Serial number and activation chat support (non-CC)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/service1.html ( http://adobe.ly/1aYjbSC )
If you only had the one installation, you should still be able to install even without contact Adobe Support since you are allowed to have activated installations on two machines.  But if you have the deactivate for the original you will then have the extra one available.

  • PSE 7 Pen pressure problem

I have been using a Bamboo tablet and PSE 7 with no problems until recently. I just purchased and set up a Cintiq 21ux DTK2100 as a secondary monitor. I updated the latest driver directly from Wacom. Now when I use PSE, pen pressure wont work the way that it used to on the line thickness. The pressure I put on the pen will vary the opacity of my lines but not the thickness of the line even though I have Size and Opacity checked off. What do I have to do? Please help.

I'll continue trying different drivers, but it looks like this is a Photoshop issue to me.
Clearly, the tablet doesn't lose sensitivity when I'm working in either Adobe Flash or Paint Tool SAI.  I've sadly had to turn to Paint Tool SAI to work around this problem.  I'd much prefer to use Photoshop, with which I have the bulk of my experience.  I purchased Photoshop CS5 for my Mac.
Since my Mac has been starting to give me trouble, I've been working on my PC.  I was hoping to upgrade my version of Photoshop, but if this product isn't going to work the way it should, I'm just not going to purchase it.
I understand this is frustrating, but, from my perspective it's clearly an issue inherent to Photoshop.  My tablet drivers work fine in other programs that use pressure sensitivity.  The artifacting seems above only occurs in Photoshop.
Is there a way I could try previous versions of Photoshop in order to see if, perhaps, it's CS6 that doesn't like my tablet?
Again, I'm sorry if I sound critical, but I'm frustrated.  Just really want Photoshop to behave like it should.
    Thanks again Chris,

  • PsE 9 auto-analysis problems

PsE 9 is having problems when attempting to auto-analyze photos.  The catalog I am working with is one created in PsE 8 and converted to PsE 9.  No converson errors were reported.  The catalog is about 91 MB is size and contains 16000 photos and a couple thousand video clips.
These are my Media-Analysis preference options...
(enabled) Analyze Photos for People Automatically
(enabled) Analyze Media for Smart Tags Automatically
         (enabled) All filters
(disabled) Run Analyzer on System Startup
(disabled) Run Analyzer only when System is Idle
Analysis will stop after it has processed what seems a random count of photos.  I can monitor the progress by hovering the mouse over the purple tag on the bottom of the Organizer screen.  I know there is an issue when the same photo is processed for more than the normal amount of time.  Normally the photos are processed at more than one per second.  I have waited for up to 10 minutes to process the same photo..
The ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe process exists in the Windows Task Manager.  However the CPU utilization is at 0% when analysis is stalled.
Attempting to manually analyze a photo will result in a progress dialog to pop up and either it will show zero progress and hang or stop at 71%.  I need to exit the Organzer, kill ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe, and then restart the Organizer to get it to work again. But then it starts analyzing from the beginning again and then stops after some time.
It looks like there is a memory leak in ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe.  The VM starts at ~54 MB and keeps on growing with every processed photo.  The size increases about 1 MB per second (about 15 photos).   The organizer stops showing progress after the  ElementsAutoAnalyzer.exe VM size reaches around 1.7 GB.

I'm trying to use the advertised feature to help me narrow down issues with photos.  I've already got too many of them.  I will take any help from an automatic tool by showing potential issues with photos.  I can be the final judge if a photo is out of focus or is too dark.  My plan is to filter by Blur for example.  Then I can quickly assess all photos for this and remove photos that are clearly not desirable.
Many of the issues pointed out by John Rellis can be resolved by making your media read-only.
The large amount of CPU times issue point out by John looks like was resolved in PsE/PrE 9 by the new 'Run Analyzer only when System is idle".
I also use this for videos.  The scene detect is great and helps me pick out clips as I am assembling my videos.
I had the impression that Adobe cleaned up some of the auto-analysis features with PrE 9 so that more people could take advantage of it, like I would like to.

  • PSE 9 Image edit problem

I have recently upgraded to PSE 9 on my iMac having used PSE 6 without any problems for a while.  PSE 9 does everything well except cropping.  When I use the crop tool then select the green tick to complete the crop the image "disappears".  When I say disappears I mean it shows as a size of 0.04cm x 0.04cm.  Any effort I do to resize it back to something original has no effect.  Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?  I haven't seen any mention of this on the Forums so I am assuming it is not a bug with PSE 9....or is it?

The first thing you need to try is clicking on the dropdown menu at the far left of the options toolbar and select Reset tool. If this doesn't work, it might be that the preferences file has corrupted during the upgrade. You will need to reset it by holding Cmd, Opt and Shift when you launch the editor from the welcome screen.

  • PSE 9 encountered a problem and needs to close

A few hours ago I posted the following: I have been using PSE 5 for years but all of a sudden when I try to open multiple files "could not complete the open command because of a program error" appears. I have reformatted my computer and reinstalled all programs & updates but still get the error. I am trying to access photo files in a specific, user created, directory on my computer; the funny thing is that if I access files in the My Documents\My pictures\ Sample pictures folder I am able to open all the files. Any and all help or suggestions are welcome. Thanks
Since then I downloaded & installed the trial version of PSE 9 but when I try to open multiple files I get an error message to the effect that PSE has encountered a problem and needs to close.  HELP!

You might need to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service.

    David,
I have an Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 and Adobe Premiere  Elements 11

I recently received a birthday gift of both software programs.
Following Adobe instructions, I attempted to use Adobe Download Assistant.

How can I use a different address? [removed by forum host]  is the only account I  have used for 20 years.
Previously, I have had some contact with Adobe. Never have I had any

  • More PSE 9 Catalogue problems

Hello I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, have 9 GB of ram, 700 GB free space in my hard drive, and Intel Core i7. Sooo... whatever it is, my system should be able to handle this product just fine. Maybe not.
Here are my issues: Organizer is stuck in Folder View, the drop down menu does not even appear. I used to be able to view the entire catalogue, but since playing with it, it has become stuck.
The General Preferences (Cntrl+K) does not work, it says it is "loading"... forever, then I have to force close the program.
And isn't it ridiculous that to be able to see the File, Edit, View, etc menu, I have to reduce the font across the board on my system? Very inconveniente!
Any thoughts on my grievances? I never paid this much for a piece of software, and I am very disappointed so far. Maybe I should just switch to Picasa for the organizer part?
    Thanks....

Are you still facing the issue ? Did you try creating a new catalog ?

  • PSE 7 Slide Show problems

I have used Photoshop 7 on my computer running vista very successfully but a problem has now arisen. When I use slide show to show some of my selections the pictures are pixelated. This does not apply to all selections. I note that the pixelated pictures are c 400% but the ones that are ok are  40%. If I do not allow the pictures to resize in slide show thet are only small. Any help would be appreciated. This has only happened recently and I cant remember if I have had an adobe downloaded update which might have affected this.

    Hi Bob
Thanks for coming back to me so quick, I will try & explain the problem in
    more detail.
I have all of the photos in My Catalogue tagged ie 2009 Holiday, Mothers
Birthday etc so that by selecting the tag and then display in full screen I
can show them in a slide show to friends & family. This has always worked
well until last week when I called up a slide show of a past holiday the
pictures were very pixelated. All photos are not affected. Some holidays I
select in slide show are ok. If I look at individual pictures in my
catalogue most are ok but many are pixelated. Any pictures that have not
been adjusted in PSE 7 are ok.
Any picture viewed in full screen in slide show has in the top left pop up
menu a % of less than 100%, typically 35 - 75%. Any of the pixelated
    pictures have a % 350 - 450%.
I originally had Elements 2 but upgraded to PSE 7 when I changed to Vista
because of album problems, apart from problems converting my catalogue
originally all has worked very well. Apart from the recent update the only
other thing which I have done is to start a back up which I aborted because
it was taking a long time to do. I have 4,600 photos in my catalogue and the
problem slide shows are random throughout but appear to be trouble free up
to about the end of 2004. ie a holiday slide show before then seems to be
ok. The latest photos put into the catalogue this month, post upgrade & post
attempted back up are ok. I have also found that if I expand a photo that
has been modified in PSE 7 although the modified picture is pixelated the
original displays ok. I hope that this more fully explains my problem but if
you require more information please let me know. I really do appreciate you
looking at this for me. It is very frustrating when something that was
working perfectly for me then goes **** up!
    Regards
    David

  • PSE 8.0 Backup problems

    Hi!
I am trying to make backups of my catalogues to a separate hard drive.
Two out of three catalogues goes ok, but the last one makes PSE to hang after 64%, no matter how many times I try.
I have repaired the catalog, runned defrag + diskcheck on the (source) drive, tried to different target locations, all without any better result.
    Anyone having any suggestions?
    Computer is PC, Win7
    Regards, Peter

    Peter,
I am not an expert but is the problem catalog much larger than the ones that do work? How long do you wait?
I'm not sure but I think that the progress bar is worked out on the number of files. During the first 60%, PSE is copying the XML and XMP files which are quite small. The last 40% or so is when it copies the actual images which cam be quite large. If you have say 1000 pictures then each 1% can be about 300 images and if they are 2Mb, we are talking about the time to copy 500MB of data.
(hope I have my calculations correct)

  • PSE 7 e-mail problems

Until 2 months ago, I could send my pictures through the share portion of PSE 7 by photo mail or e-mail attachments.  Now it will not send the pictures.  The circle keeps turning as though the pictures are being sent, but it never stops and the pictures never go through.  Can someone help?

If you are using either Vista or Windows 7, try running PSE 7 as an Administrator by right-clicking on it. Sometimes running the program in this way corrects some mysterious problems.

forgive me I am not very compure savey but I can get through something if someone walks me through it... so please bear with me.
After purchasing a Bamboo Creative bundled with PSE 8 I had to upgrade from 8 to 10 after being told that 8 isn't compatible with the OS i have now. Having done this I have had other problems besides the previous just not doing anything when opened, fixed that with the upgrade. Now I have been using the program for digital art and editing of photos. This is where the problems come in. After approx. 15 minutes of use, the program bogs down and I get alerts that the program is using a high amount of disk space... I continue working but the fan is working over time so I shut the program down and let Windows catch up.  Now, HP just did a HUGE Bios update and its been doing this ever since. The second problem I have encountered, is when using just about any tool within PSE 10 if I use it more than five (maybe less) seconds, the program goes unresponsive, but if I finish what i am doing and wait a few seconds, the program is running again. The third problem I have encountered is when I insert a photo (SD 1gb) card to import pictures, it never shows up. Even if I eject and reinsert after shutting down the program, then restarting the program once the photo card is in place...
That is where I am confused am i doing something wrong?.... Any thoughts?

Suggest that you consult with a reliable computer shop re advisability of installing more RAM.
I run PSEv.8 on my HP desktop with 6.0 GB without a hitch.
I would also investigate if one can roll back the BIOS to its prior state. You indicate that the genesis of your problem may relate, in a temporal sequence, to the update.
I don't permit all the updates that HP pumps out. I just delete the daily nag message." If it isn't broken, don't fix it.,"  The Microsoft security updates would seem to be ok.
    Good luck.

How can I correct the PSE catalog to clear up the drive and serial number warnings and reconnect my catalog to the photo files?
    Thanks.
    Steve

Try reconnecting just one of the photos that was originally on the C drive.   In the reconnect dialog, are you able to browse to the new location of the photo on the M drive and identify it's thumbnail?   If so, what happens when you try to reconnect to that file?   If there's an error message, what is the precise message?
Looking at the "psedbtool" output, it's possible that PSE may be getting confused by the following situation: The drive currently called L used to be called M, and the catalog records M in its volume table, and there is now another drive currently called M.  PSE sometimes uses the drive letter written in its catalog and sometimes uses the drive's volume serial number.   When the current drive letter associated with a volume serial number doesn't match what's in the catalog, PSE can get confused.
    So two suggestions:
    1. Go back to the original PC and use the backup/restore method to move your photos from the old to the new computer:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos_1
I strongly recommend this method, since it is more likely to succeed in the face of all the drive-handling bugs in PSE.   After doing the restore, use Display > Folder Location view to rearrange the heirarchy or move parts of it to other drives.
    2. Reassign the drive letter of the current M (6892-2C47) to something different, e.g. O.   Then reassign the drive letter of the current L to be M, so it matches what's in the catalog:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844
This may likely solve your problem, but I can't say 100%.

  • WIN/Vista, PSE 7.0:  Organizer problems with dates

Im working with our scanned photos now, so there is no EXIF data and the only dates are the scanned date and any later corrections in Photoshop CS3 before or after importing into PSE 7.0. I now have two date related problems that I didnt have with PE 5.0.
    1) In the Organizer view, when I right click on the date to bring up the Adjust Date and Time screen, then click on Change to a specified date and time and click OK the day automatically changes to a day earlier, which has caused much confusion since all I am wanting to do is set a time to sequence photos from multiple cameras. How do I keep it from automatically changing the date?
    2) Also, Ive had multiple times that Ive changed the date on a couple of photos and PSE 7 will place them incorrectly so that they are non-chronological. Specifically I now have two photos from a string of many on Dec 24 & 25, and some on Dec 26 and after. These two photos belong on Dec 26 chronologically, as well as where they fit in my file naming system. If I change the date on these to 12/26/1976, though, they are placed in my 12/25/1976 photos, not 12/26 where they should be. I have another photo dated 1/17/1977 that PSE has placed between 1/16 and 1/9/1977.
I thought these were quirky enough that I actually removed and reinstalled PSE 7.0, but these issues are unchanged.
    FYI: Settings in Edit>Preferences:
General/Display Options/Date (Newest First): Show Newest First within Each Day is selected
Files/File Options: Use Last Modified Date if EXIF . . . is unchecked.

    > In the Organizer view, when I right click on the date to bring up the "Adjust Date and Time" screen, then click on "Change to a specified date and time" and click "OK" the day automatically changes to a day earlier, which has caused much confusion since all I am wanting to do is set a time to sequence photos from multiple cameras. When a photo has a date but unknown time, PSE 6 and 7 (and perhaps 5 too) behave this way. Its a bug thats been reported to Adobe.
    > 2) Also, I've had multiple times that I've changed the date on a couple of photos and PSE 7 will place them incorrectly so that they are non-chronological. When this happens, which view are you in? Display > Thumbnail View or Display > Folder Location view? Is this using Smart Albums to search by date? If this is still happening, can you upload a screen shot, the incorrect 12/26/1976 photo, and the adjacent 12/25/1976 photo? You can post these for free at www.pixentral.com. Ill take a look at their metadata.
There are a number of problems with time unknown, so Ive stopped using it:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.59b6aaa0
    In particular:
    - Search with date ranges doesnt properly handle time unknown.
    - Other tools, such as Vista Explorer, dont correctly handle dates with time unknown in metadata written by PSE.
    - If you have a series of slides youve scanned, you know their relative time ordering (due to the slide numbering) but not their absolute time. Theres no convenient way of preserving that ordering within PSE thumbnail view if you use time unknown.
So instead of unknown, I assign the times 12:00 AM, 12:05 AM, 12:10 AM, etc. (leaving gaps in case I need to insert another scan later).

  • PSE 12 choosing brushes problem

I am starting to regret spending $100 on upgrading from PSE9 to PSE12.
It installs just fine but I can't bring across my catalog. It stops at the same point every time - 34%.
That's typical  of a 'problem' file in the backup. Generally a video file; maybe a file format no longer supported by recent versions.
I have followed the support document on what to do if catalog import fails but it didn't help.
You mean : if the restore fails. (From the rest of your post, there does not seem to be any problem in importing all your files).
Did you search for offending files ? (most of the time, the first test is to make a catalog copy, delete from catalog all video files, and see if the restore works). Ask if you want more help for this search.
If it's an offending file, chances are that the problem is not linked to the Elements version, the restore could fail even from your version 9.
If you are in a hurry and your version 9 is still available, I would 'write metadata to files' for all your files.
Then I would use the drop-down menu of the keyword panel (small triangle next to the '+' icon under the keyword panel title) to 'save keyword tags to file'. That creates a small text file saving your keywords hierarchy.
From PSE12, I would use the same dropdown menu to import that keyword hierarchy from the saved text file.
Then, I would import all your files like you did. You would recover your tags, captions, ratings, but not the version sets and stacks.
