PSE8 Full screen view with high-res images

The Full Screen View in PSE8 doesn't seem to cope well with high-resolution images, eg from a full-frame DSLR (eg my Sony A850 with 6000 x 4000 px).
After selecting an image in Organsier and starting Full Screen View the first image is displayed successfully, but clicking the button to move to subsequent images soon results in a "cracked image" symbol.  (It's unrelated to the image though - closing FSV, selecting the suspect image and restarting FSV displays it properly).
I get the same symptoms with JPEG and RAW images, and on two Windows PCs.  One's XP with 1.5GB, the other is Windows 7 with 8GB.
I've tried maximising the RAM available to PSE8 (in Editor preferences), but it makes no difference.

Here is the solution under Windows 7 64-bit  with Photoshop Elements 6 for the new Entry "MaxImageSize":
The Registry-Entries for 32-bit-Programs are saved in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ... Wow6432Node ...
QWORD-32bit 42C1D8000000
(Hex 1120000000 or Decimal 73551314944)
for a JPG-File up to 10.000 x 10.000 Pixel

  • Full Screen View with iTunes 8.01

since i installed iTunes 8.01 i have not been able to use the full screen viewing mode. when i click on <full screen> the monitors go black, like it always did, but the album art does not appear.
    any fixes out there? thanks

    Hi Casper,
Are you seeing the same issue in another user account?
You can create another user account in System Preferences, under Accounts, just click the lock to make changes, and then click the + to create the account.
Try removing any iTunes or QuickTime Player plugins.

  • Best way to replace contents of a layer with higher res image

I can do it, but I was wondering if there is a better way.
Large PS file (CS6 and CC) half a dozen texture layers using low res images. Several have blend modes, transparency and even masks. I now have the same images in high res. I want to replace just the image, but not lose my blend/transparency, or masks.
    Any thoughts?
Do I bring in the high res layer, copy the mask over etc? Then delete the original?
    Max

    Try this.
Convert the low res images to Smart Objects. Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.
The replace the contenst of the smart objects. Layer > Smart Objects > Replace Contents...
This way you can replace the low res images with the hi res versions. Provided they are the same crop and aspect rarion your mask should be fairly good to go. I say fairly good as you may have made some adjustments (eg. feathering) based on the resolution.
The blend modes and transparency will be unaffected.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer: Full screen view of lower quality than with PSE 10 and before?!

Upgrading from PSE 10 to 11, I noticed that when I watch my images with the organizer in PSE 11 in full screen view mode (F11), while the images load faster, they are shown in a lower quality than in PSE 10 or any other version of PSE that I owned before. In PSE 11, after the initial viewing in full screen (in the "fit screen" mode), when I click with the mouse on an image to display the "100%" view, there is a delay and the program says "Loading...", after which the 100% view in the full screen mode appears. When I then click another time with the mouse on the image to get back to "fit screen" mode, I get an image of better quality than during the initial view!
So it seems like the program first gives a faster, but lower quality view of the image in full screen mode, and only after the user requests a 100% view, it actually loads the image with full detail, which is then preserved when going back to the "fit screen" view. This is a serious issue for me, because I also use PSE organizer to present my pictures to other people, and I don't want to show them some lower quality versions of my images, but the full quality ones, without having to first choose "100% view" and then go back to "fit screen".
How can I make the PSE 11 organizer give me a full-quality full screen image right away, as this used to be the case in PSE10 and before?
(I have both versions, PSE 11 and PSE 10, now on the same computer and tested this to confirm that the PSE 11 initial full screen view is of lower quality than the PSE 10 one. Also in PSE 10, there is practically no delay for displaying the "100%" view afterwards, indicating that the image was loaded with full detail right away.)

    - Update:
    * Adobe's senior support level has replied to me about this issue as follows:
    "Thank you for contacting Adobe.
When you press the F11 button, Organizer 11 uses the Bicubic
interpolation mainly because it is less processor intensive compared to
Bicubic Sharper, and it helps to create the preview on the fly, rather
than based on the thumbnail cache.
When you zoom out from the 100% view, Elements Organizer uses Bicubic
Sharper. This is because Bicubic Sharper is used for image reduction, so
if the 100% view is larger than the available screen space, it will need
to shrink. The Bicubic Sharper images may look more crisp however, Like
any sharpening algorithm, Bicubic Sharper introduces halos and
edge-enhancement artifacts. Those halos are typically slight, but any
further sharpening (which you'll need when preparing an image for print,
for example) will exaggerate them. This is expected behavior. The
Organizer isn't great for determining exact quality, I recommend you to
use Elements Editor for this purpose.
    Thank you,
    Bobby Johnson,
    Adobe Technical Support."
    * My reply on this to Adobe is:
    "Hello Bobby,
thank you for your reply. Now at least we are talking about the same thing.
Why I am wondering about the choice to use the "Bicubic" algorithm when pressing F11 in PSE 11 is that all previous versions of PSE that I owned (which spans from PSE 6 to PSE 10) did use the "Bicubic Sharper" algorithm right away when pressing F11. So apparently Adobe didn't worry about processor intensity of this algorithm then, and computers are getting all the time more powerful.
It is true that in some situations, the "Bicubic Sharper" algorithm may introduce halos and edge-enhancement artifacts, as you write. On the other hand, especially on smaller resolution screens, the results of the "Bicubic Sharper" algorithm may look more crisp and lively, while the ones of the "Bicubic" algorithm may look more flat and lack fine detail. This is not only my personal opinion, but as I have brought up this topic in several forums, I can see that I am not alone here.
So assuming that the question about preferring "Bicubic Sharper" or "Bicubic" as a default algorithm when pressing F11 is partly a matter of taste, and partly a matter of the hardware the user has available, why can Abobe not give the user an option to choose which one he/she would prefer? For instance, F11 gives full screen view with "Bicubic" applied, and CTRL+F11 with "Bicubic sharper"? Or make this an option in the preferences?
As I am using the PSE organizer also to present pictures to other people (and I know many people who use it that way too), I would like to show them my pictures as sharp and detail-rich as possible. Therefore, I would highly appreciate an option as described above to be implemented in the PSE 11 organizer via an update. It should be fairly easy from a programming point of view, since both algorithms are already contained in the program anyway."
    * If you support this suggestion of mine as stated above, please also contact Adobe accordingly! The more support requests they get for this, the more likely it is that they will implement this update! You may mention my case number 0184046323 for reference.

  • In PSE4, F11 (full screen view) deselects current image

I hesistate to put this in "suggested features" in case there is a trick I do not know about.
If I am in organizer and decide I would like to have a better look at the currently selected photo, I press F11 for a full screen view.
When I press Esc to get back, not only has my image been deselected, but the thumbnail pane has jumped back to the top so the image of interest is not even on the screen.
This means I have to remember the file name and scroll down again looking for it to get back to where I was.
Is there a way around this?
It would also be nice if the filename could be displayed while in full screen mode as many of my images do not have captions set. And a caption may not uniquely identify the particular file anyway.

Thanks Codebreaker for the "Alt+Enter" trick - that helps a lot.
Brian has isolated the problem well. I was a bit confused that things sometimes seemed to work OK. Unfortunately, showing only files in the selected folder is my preferred mode to make scrolling the thumbnails up and down a bit easier.
It would be nice to think the problem may be solved in a future update, but for now, knowing what is going on makes it easier to get on with the job.
I do not think the other bug, jumping thumbnails, is related because in that case F5 corrects the problem (which it does not do in this case).
I do not quite understand Karin's suggestion. My "Back" button (top left of screen) is greyed out much of the time anyway.

  • Compare speed of full screen view: PSE8 vs PSE5?

My workflow requires rapid Full Screen Viewing in Organizer of a couple hundred RAW files in a session.  I have PSE5 now and the flow flowed well when I was working with jpg files.
Now, each RAW photo takes about 8 to 10 seconds to come up vs the former 1 to 2 secs w jpgs.  Irfanview is very fast in viewing one RAW file after another but it only works for successive files in a WinXP folder.  I need to call up multiple files with a common set of tags and screen these fast.
Does PSE8 do fast Full Screen viewing from file to file?  How fast?
[I tried to install the trial copy of PSE8 within Sandboxie because I feared for irreversible damage if I didn't like PSE8 but my install didn't work.  Error msg: “Licensing for this product has stopped working”  error 148.3
so I come before you for help.]
    Thanks much for your advice.

    Thanks much John and Paige.
My situation:  PSE5 has much of what I need for organizing and editing.  It's been rock solid in reliability on my XP machine.  But I do need much better Full Screen viewing of selected groups of photos based on filtering via my tags on the pix.
As I noted, PSE5 takes about 8-10 secs for each of several Full Screen Views.  I've been wondering about alternate routes to my goal of a couple of seconds.
Do you think that the slowup is due to reading from the hard drive? Then, perhaps an internal SATA drive would do the trick?
Is the slowup due to a slow CPU on my HP Pavilion a1330n with an Athlon 64 (S) 3800+ 2.4 GHz [running WinXP 32)
and or a slow graphics board (ATI Radeon Xpress 20)                          .  The perhaps a new computer?
My thinking is that perhaps I should put my money into a new computer if that would definitely speed PSE5 Full Screen View to a couple of seconds.
Otherwise, I tried LR3 beta and you're right.  It's way fast enough.
Any suggestions/information would be much appreciated.

The HUD Inspector in Full Screen View seems to position at the right margin of the image as a default(?)  If I toggle the button in the top right of the HUD it 'unlocks' and I can drag it to where I prefer -- at the left margin; (for over a decade) my dock has resided at the right margin so all my slider manipulation over countless editing sessions in Aperture has been ingrained to work at the left margin -- but, the vast majority of the time, the HUD overlaps the image I am editing in this 'unlocked' mode.
Every occasionally I enter Full Screen View and it positions on the left margin *without* superimposition...(!) My great joy is modulated into aggravation, however, should my tracking cursor drift all the way 'out of bounds' -- to call in the hidden pane of adjacent images sequenced in the library... This dramatically shrinks the Full Screen display and re-locks the HUD; if I toggle the switch to re-xpand the image it re-positions at the right margin!!!!  I SOOoooooo wish I knew how to control the default 'locked' margin of the HUD in Full Screen View...

Drag it over to the Left. Then lock it there.

  • Explanation sought: why do alternate photos appear with top/bottom border in full screen view?

I've moved over to Photos - no especial problems to report.
But I'd be very glad if anyone can explain why, in full screen view, some photos appear as smaller than others. That is, some photos appear with larger black borders to the sides and about half a centimetre of black border top and bottom. Normally photos go to the edge of screen top and bottom - which is as you'd hope, so you can see the maximum amount of detail.
It happens with portrait and landscape format. So far as I can work out, the pattern is that one photo will display in full screen, then the next one not, flip-flopping back and forth. Apart from wasting screen space, this makes it harder to (e.g) HDR and normal versions of the same shot. Is anyone experiencing the same, or got any ideas what could be going on, or even better, how to stop this?
For clarity: I am looking at photos taken in the past few days on an iPhone 5s.

  • Full Screen Problem With Dual Monitor Viewing

I have a 64 Bit system, Chrome browser and with flash player built in.  I am attempting to view videos on a 2nd monitor while working on the primary monitor.  I have tried this on various sites, TNT.tv, USANetworks.com, etc...  I select full screen viewing.  A message is displayed to exit full screen press escape.  However, when I attempt to do anything else automatically exit full screen on the second monitor.   This should not be an issue and with the way most people view video online, they are doing so on a 2nd monitor or TV.  I have done a google search and it is a common problem, but there is no solution that seems to work.

I have just posted the same question - missed yours.
Adobe could you take a look into this - I think solving this problem can't be that hard.

  • Full Screen Mode with Menu Bar view mode appears with Blue Background??

Can someone please help me figure out what I did exactly to unintentionally change the "Full Screen Mode with Menu Bar" view mode so that it now appears with a Blue Background, instead of the default gray one....and better yet, can someone let me know how I can switch it back to displaying the default gray background instead?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

    >let me know how I can switch it back to displaying the default gray background
SHIFT-Click the Paint Bucket pool in that area using the gray of your choice (e.g. 132, 132, 132).
(That's probably what you did to turn it blue.)
Or, more drastically, you can trash your preferences.

  • View high res images on iPhone?

I'd like to view high res images of subway maps on my iPhone as I used to on my BlackBerry. However, iTunes seems to pare down the resolution when syncing them, making them useless. Suggestions?

You may want to create a Facebook account, Flickr account, or any other photo account that there is an App for on the iPhone.
This may allow you to then upload your photos to their servers. View it on the App at a much higher quality.
Again not totally sure on this. But it might be something you can try out. Maybe our fellow posters have other suggestions.

  • Problem with Cover Flow full screen view in 10.6

I like to use the Cover Flow full screen view in iTunes on my monitor.  Since upgrading to iTunes 10.6 Cover Flow full screen view will revert to Cover Flow standard view between each song. This did not occur with any previous version of iTunes. Is there a setting that will prevent Cover Flow automatically switching back to standard view from full screen view?

I guess I am the only one experiencing this issue of Cover Flow full screen view collapsing to standard view when a song within an album or playlist changes. This began in 10.6 and has continued in 10.6.1. At least I have not experienced the more serious issues others have with 10.6.
