Purchased a used Late 2011 Macbook Pro and cannot get find my Mac to work. What do I need to do?
So I purchased a used late 2011 Macbook Pro from a friend. I am trying to get the find my Mac app set up but it won't let me because I believe he still has it as one of his devices. I texted him a couple days ago to ask him to remove it, but it doesn't seem he has or is in any rush to do that. I was debating re-installing the entire OS to give myself a fresh start. Will this give me the ability to set my computer up on the find my Mac app or is it tied to something more than the hard drive/OS.

AirPlay Mirroring is supported on your Mac, but it needs OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
You have two possibilities:
1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion to upgrade to this OS X. Then, you will find the AirPlay Mirroring icon at the top right of the display, on the menu bar, or on System Preferences > Displays.
2. Keep OS X Lion and use AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com
Both options work properly, but I recommend AirPlay Mirroring as it doesn't need a third-party program -
I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro and zxcv keys are not working?
I have late 2011 Macbook Pro and the zxcv keys are no longer working. Once I connect USB keyboard I can utilize these keys. Do anyone have solution?
How did you try to use Acitivty Monitor?
Open Activity Monitor, choose "All processes" from the list, and sort processes by CPU usage. More likely than not, there will be task using up good bit of CPU.

i have a late 2011 macbook pro and i don't have the airplay icon on my menu. Everything is on the same network and i have a black mini apple Tv. it is either 2nd or 3rd generation. The airplay icon comes up in itunes it doesn't works with video just music. I want to mirror it on my apple tv. Will you please help me?

I sometimes feel that mac's display performance is marvelous and sometimes I feel like I am looking at an old school, blury screen. Is there anybody feels like I feel. I have doubts about screen performance. Well I searched on internet before to write but I could not express what I feel on google search for example. So, I am writing here what I feel. LeventI've been having the exact same issue, same monitor and same laptop. I spoke to a couple Apple techs on the phone and took my mbp to a genius bar last night, thinking it might be a video card issue since the blocks were also showing up on my macbook's screen. It of course failed to replicate at the store, even with a TB display hooked up.
After this I finally realized it was an issue with the monitor and not the laptop, since it only happened when they were connected (duh... I never checked with them disconnected)
I was able to make it go away temporarily by pushing the cables on the back of the display firmly in, but a few hours later I noticed a couple blocks popping up again.. however it wasn't as bad as before. Seems to me it must be some issue with the hardwired power/tb connetor. -
I have a late 2011 macbook pro running OSX Lion, and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated. Im wondering what can i do to stop this or get it to update.
Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

Ok, I have searched for months for an answer to this question to no avail, probably because no one has experienced it before. I am hoping however that you guys can help me figure this one out cause it is driving me nuts! Also, I am not entirely sure what section of the support I should put this under so if I stick it in the wrong place, I apologize.
Right now my problem is very simple. When I turn off my laptop, and then try to turn it back on, my internal hard drive disappears... and I get the blinking folder with a question mark on it. I have figured out something interesting however. I have an install disk with Ubuntu Linux on it. If I boot into that first, then RESTART the laptop, not shut down and turn back on, it reads the internal hard drive just fine and I can boot as if there is nothing wrong.
Second part to the problem... If I allow the laptop in either OSX or Windows to go to sleep (aka shut off the hard drive but the computer remains on), when I attempt to wake it up, I am greeted with the usual log in screen of whichever OS I am in, but is frozen and after a few seconds goes black and restarts the computer to find that... Surprise! The hard drive is gone
I have tried every trick in the book that I can think of, but can not seem to come up with a solution to the problem... I know when the problem happened and if anyone thinks that that will help them figure this out I will type everything I did up till, including the crash that caused this, and my attempted fixes, but I have class right now so only if you guys want it I will type all that out.

Windows 8.1 on BootCamp 5 (yea I know its not supposed to work but it does) again, fully updated
Ubuntu 13.10 (I think? Doesn't really matter, its just an install disk I use to boot the computer)

My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be? -
Upgrading graphics card and ram on late 2011 macbook pro?
Hi. I have a late 2011 macbook pro, and I wanted to know if i could upgrade my graphics card and ram for better performance while gaming. I play WoW and diablo 3 and often notice lag and can only run on low settings. So my graphics are Intel HD 3000 which is integrated, and i was wondering if i could upgrade to a graphics card like AMD or nvidia. Also, would upgrading from 4 gb of ram to 8gb of ram help my performance? Thanks.
You cannot upgrade the graphics card on your MBP. It is soldered to the logic board.
RAM can be increased to 8 or 16 GB. The correct specifications are; 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
The best vendors for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Late 2011 Macbook Pro with SSD Freezing
Hello,
I have a late 2011 macbook pro and about six or so months ago I have it a new lease on live with a Samsung 840 SSD (non pro).
I haven't really had any problems with that until recently - the machine started locking up on wakeup. This meant that the beachball of doom would start and each program would gradually in turn become unresponsive. Shutdown command wouldn't work and would time out, force quit wouldn't open, and although I could move the mouse around and sometimes switch between programs, they didn't work and the only cure was to hold the power button until it switched off.
This has also started happening just when the computer has been on for a certain amount of time *without sleeping*. For example, if I watch an episode of a tv show, by the end of it the video is still running but all of the other programs are locked up - clicking out of VLC causes the beachball of doom. This also happens in other programs - it's even happened as I've been writing this, and the only remedy seems to be a hard restart.
The problem doesn't seem to occur in windows. In OSX I have 'put hard drives to sleep' turned off, and TRIM enabled. I also disables the sudden movement sensor. I have also reset the SMC.
Does anyone know of a remedy short of a full reinstall of Mountain Lion?
Oh and I used samsung magician in windows to update the firmware of the drive. It reports that the drive should be fine.

try doing a nvram/pram reset and see if that sorts it out.
i have ssd installed in all my Macbook/Macbook Pro and have never had any issues.
Then again, I don't have windows installed in any of them.
hopefully the nvram/pram reset sorts it out for you.
once you've done that reset - go back to system preferences - startup disk and select your ssd as the startup drive again - then restart it again. -
OS 10.7.5 pinwheels Late 2011 Macbook Pro
I am using a late 2011 MacBook Pro and I am getting recurrent pinwheels no matter what I do. Even booting into safe mode, I get them but it usually takes a little while of normal use until they happen. At first I thought it was Chrome, but after I started using Safari the behavior continued. However, the machine will still become unresponsive and begin pinwheeling after a random amount of time, never less than 10 minutes. I have run hardware tests and there does not appear to be anything wrong with the logic board or the RAM. I do have an SSD installed but over one-third of the drive is free space.
I have had the activity monitor open when this happens, but I cannot tell what process(es) are using the system resources because it becomes unresponsive too. I have tried updating to Mountain Lion, but I can't get it downloaded in full before the machine pinwheels again. I tried doing a Lion Internet Recovery, but I only got 10-15% done before it errored out and told me that it couldn't finish the download. After that, I could attempt to restart the installation, but then it did not see the SSD at all. I no longer have the original HDD to test the unit, but it appears that the SSD is the problem. I am looking for help in any other areas before I install a new piece of hardware. -

Is there a compatibility guide for SSDs in the late 2011 macbook pro model? I'm looking to purchase a 15.4" Late 2011 Macbook pro and was looking a SATA3 SSD that was supported (outside of the ones provided by Apple). Does anyone have any success stories they wish to share? I assume the problem with secondary bay and SATA3 has still not been resolved.
Have you looked at the OWC web site? They specialize in Mac peripherals and they have a good line of SSDs and secondary bays as well. My experience with them has been good but I am not ready for SSDs. For my needs the cost/benefits are not there.

Putting a SSD in the optical drive bay of a late 2011 MacBook Pro.
I want to put a large Solid State Drive in the optical drive bay of my late 2011 (Model ID 8,2, 2.4 GHZ quad i7, 8 Gigs RAM, SSD boot drive) using the carrier and drive from Other World Computing. The "About This Mac" box shows that the optical drive is 6G so I'm thinking that it should be OK putting a 6G drive in that bay, but OWC says that MacBook Pros have only a 3G optical drive capability. I know this was true on earlier models, but my bay says 6G. The 6 G SSD's are faster and have a longer warranty. I do pro audio work and want to record to the new drive with speed and reliability. Is there any way to prove that my MBPro will handle 6G? I was told by someone at OWC who looked up my my serial number that it would work, but another tech guy at OWC said they didn't recommend it. I'm thinking that they just issue a blanket "no" answer to cover themselves against people ordering a 6G drive for a machine that wouldn't handle it. Before I order a 6G drive is there a way I can know for sure if it will work?

according to MacTracker database (http://mactracker.ca download application) optical drive interface supports
the same spec as the hard disk drive...

So should there be an error in identification, that would make a difference. Some Early 2011 models may
have the 3.0 Gbps or 6.0Gbps data rate in the optical drive. All Late 2011 models should be 6.0 Gbps.

Can a late 2011 Macbook Pro utilize 1.35v RAM? Can OS X 10.8 display the RAM voltage?
Can a late 2011 Macbook Pro (Sandy Bridge, not Ivy Bridge) utilize 1.35 volts Ram or will the Pro run it at 1.5 volts? Is there anyway in OS X 10.8 to determine what voltage the RAM is running at?

Do you know of any third-party software titles that can provide the RAM's voltage? I ask because others have made unsubstantiated claims of using 1.35V ram with a late 2011 MacBook Pro and because Crucial's website suggests the use of 1.35V with a late 2011 MacBook Pro. Unless it is a mistake, I do not know why Crucial would suggest this:

Upgrades to Late 2011 MacBook Pro (RAM, etc.)
I have a new, late 2011 MacBook Pro, and I was wondering about certain upgrades...namely, RAM and graphics.
To start off, here are the specs:
2.5 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
4 GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
750 GB Serial ATA @ 7200 rpm
AMD Radeon HD 6770M
Intel HD Graphics 3000
I run some pretty resource-intensive programs like Photoshop, Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro X. Programs like iTunes, Chrome, and Transmission are almost always running too.
I also do some gaming like Starcraft 2, which as some of you may now, is very demanding at high settings (when I do run SC 2 though, or other games, I shut down all other applications).
You may be thinking that if high-end performance is my main concern, a Mac Pro would be more appropriate. And I agree. But this new computer however, is a CRU. It's a long story, but Apple basically gave it to me (early xmas gift, I guess!), so I'm trying to see what I can get out of it.
I know that the 2011 MBP's are capable running 16GB of RAM, and OWC offers this upgrade for a reasonable price. Now, this upgrade doesn't void warranty, correct (my cursory research shows that it does not) ? Secondly, do you think this upgrade is worth it? I know that in Logic Pro, for example, DSP plug-ins and such can eat up RAM, so I certainly wouldn't mind more resources at my disposal in that regard.
As far as gaming is concerned, my understanding is that RAM upgrades will not help much, but then again, it certainly won't make it worse (By the way, do RAM upgrades increase virtual memory?). I believe that gaming performance is very often bottlenecked with the graphics card(s). Can those be upgraded on a MacBook Pro?
