Purchased Ringtones vs tones folder

I have, in the recent past, purchased ringtones via my iphone. They have syncd just fine back into iTunes and I can see them under the tones list.  They appear in the itunes media folder in the ringtones folder.
This week, I bought some tones, to be used as text alert, etc, on my iphone. They synced fine as well. But, I notice that a new folder was created inside the itunes media folder called "tones" right next to "ringtones" folder.
Everything appears fine in the iTunes window when looking at the tones part of the library, but when you look at the iPhone tones (under the iphone icon), I see exclamation marks.  Like I said, everything works, just not use to seeing that.

Thank you for your reply.
I followed all of the instructions in the URL below.
http://www.ehow.com/how_2160460_custom-iphone-ringtones-free.html
but fell at the last hurdle, item 16. The clip went to my Music file, but won't go to the "Tones" file.
I also watched this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RroJKNPRU0
which gives a slightly different method of loading the clip to itunes, but it didn't help.
I even watched:

and there it seems so easy, he just drags the desk icon to the Library and it goes to the right place.

  • Can't move ringtones to "Tones" folder in itunes

I have followed instructions on how to create a ringtone from my own music.
I have created the m4r version and saved it to the desk top.
I have deleted the original track.
I have dragged the icon from the desk top to my music folder in itunes.
But it will not go into "Tones". It stays in "Music".
Please can anyone tell me how to get it into "Tones" so I can sync it to my iphone 4s and use it as a ringtone?
    Many thanks.

  • All purchased ringtones / text tones lost

I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro, and when I synced my iPhone to my computer for first time, it transferred music purchases from my iPhone to my MacBook Pro, but not my ringtones or text tones. Upon checking my iPhone, they've all been wiped.
Does anyone know how I retrieve these purchases? I've checked my Purchases and there's nothing there...
    Thanks

Update - Had to create a case number with iTunes on line and then had to call Support.  It took 1-1/2 hrs!  Don't believe the so-called experts on this site.  Don't repurchase tones as they will charge you again!  Apple told me that you shouldn't purchase from your device (Wait! What?) and the supervisor I finally got to late last night said this the first time they ever heard of this happening (what a Crock! scripted) Don't download anything from your iPhone as the tones and from what I hear songs will disappear before you have a chance to sync.  Even when they re-pushed the tones, then the existing tones that show in iTunes then disappeared on my phone.  They had to re-push everything twice and it works for now and I don't hold any hope that it will last.  The so-called experts here don't know what they are talking about.  They will resort to calling you a novice and other choice names when their so-called fixes don't work. It is irresponsible for Apple to remain silent on this issue and not give its customers this warning.  But it will enhance their bottom line if they remain silent.  Think about it.…

  • Ringtones are in my library but won't show up in the tones folder

I have iTunes10 and an iPhone 5. The files are the correct format (m4r), they show up in my music library as a ringtone, the tones folder is already showing, but the ringtones do not show up in my tones folder.  I have already tried saving the files to the desktop and then deleting them from my music library and then opening the file from the desktop.  It automatically adds it back to my music library as a ringtone but does not add it to the tones folder.  Does anyone have any idea why iTunes won't allow me to put anything in my Tones folder and nothing will show up in there even if it is the right file format?
Also, because there is nothing in the tones folder when I connect my iPhone there is no tones tab at the top of the screen to allow me to select any syncing options.  The tones folder shows on the left side of the screen when I click on the iPhone to expand it but no tab at the top and it won't let me put anything in the tones folder under my iPhone either.  Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem. I spent three hours on the phone with Apple Reps last night. They first said that they would have to reinstate ? my permissions, which they did (I had also lost some music) but after an hour of downloads, I still had no tones. Spoke with another Rep and they said if I purchased the Tones on Istore they should show up. I had. They didn't. Then said that it could be the "older" music was no longer compatible and it MUST be purchased through Itunes Store to show up in Tones automatically. So...I bought almost $20 of Tones last night after I hung up, and NONE Of them show up in my Tones folder. I have tried everything. I cannot move them by drag and drop.
This has been an ongoing problem for me for over a year, and so far, I cannot get any help.
I was asked if it was possible if I had different Libraries. I told them I don't know, since I have used Itunes since 2009 (and like the old version much better) and I have never changed my Itunes login or password. I have however, had different computers.  I hope someone can help with this issue.

  • Created ringtone, but itunes created a Tones folder instead of Ringtones

I created a ringtone by cutting a song up into a 29 sec. clip. converted to .m4r and synced with my iphone.  itunes and the phone created a Tones folder and put the file there, but there is no Ringtones folder and I cannot find the tone on the phone to choose as a ringtone or sms tone.

Yes, I have it set to sync everything.  When the iphone was docked it syncd and downloaded the newly purchased tone onto my PC itunes. Looking at the the Tones folder while docked in itunes and I can see both files in the Tones folder of the iphone and the PC.  I've scrolled through the whole list of tones and do not see my created ringtone at all.
i know I have gotten it onto the phone. When I first created the ringtone and syncd the iphone it created the Tones folder on the phone and I immediately saw the ringtone on the phone.
I assume that there is something wrong with the file that I created like the bitrate or filesize that is keeping the iphone from recognizing it.  I have not had trouble with this in the past though.
I used a 3rd party program to cut up the song to make the ringtone as I always have.  Should I try to use itunes to make the ringtone?

  • Purchased ringtone  iphone 4 that is not in my itunes library when i click transfer purchases from it appears in the tones library but in a paler shade of print with a dotted circle to the left of it when i take any action it disappears

have purchased ringtone on iphone 4 not in my itunes library when i click devices, transfer purchases from, it appears in tones in my library but in a paler shade of print with a dotted circle to the left of it, if i try to click on it or take any other action it disappears and leave a blank space i have tried this several time i want to transfer library to my new iphone 5 but i will loose the ringtone

I had the exact same issue!! Seriously p*ssed me off when I checked out my ITunes purchased items (via my computer) and noticed that most of the additional tracks listed on my IPhone playlist was listed there too. However, I never authorized any purchases!!  (I have actually written Apple Support asking for a full refund of all tracks listed on my purchased list)
Be careful when you swipe your finger to the left/right on those "additional" tracks on your IPhone playlist... I'm pretty sure that the cloud symbol is an option to download or automatically buy those tracks.
    Solution for the problem:
1 - go to your IPhone settings
    2 - choose "iTunes & App Store"
3 - go to "Show All" & "Music"
4 - turn off "Music" by moving the bar to the left (it should be a white color once you turn it off)
    Should solve your problem :~)

  • I am having difficulties getting an itune i converted to a ringtone into my tones folder so i can use it. what could i be missing?

im having difficulties getting an itune i converted to a ringtone into my tones folder so i can use it as a ringtone.  i have followed all steps and have gotten the tune to a tone but i must be missing one last thing.  any ideas?

I'm not sure how this applies here, or even if it does, but when I made ringtones for my phone (not an iPhone) I had file size limits on how big it is. Have you seen any restrictions on how large a ring tone can be?

  • I am unable to drag my ringtone from desktop to my tones folder. New iTunes is making it very difficult. Any suggestions??

I am unable to drop my ringtone into my tones folder that I dragged from my desktop. For some reason the tones folder won't take it. Any suggestions??

Instead of dragging, try to "add file". Click on the Music dropbox at the leftcorner under File Edit View bar, choose Tones. Then click on the dropbox at the top left corner and select Add File to Library, from there browse to your ring ton file and add it. :-)

  • I just got an iphone 5c and downloaded ringtone maker and made a 30 second 4r ringtone and when I try to drag and drop in the tones folder of itunes nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

I just got an iphone 5c and downloaded ringtone maker and made a 30 second 4r ringtone and when I try to drag and drop it in the tones folder of itunes nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

If the file is a correctly formatted AAC file with the .m4r file extension and less than 40 seconds long, then iTunes should put it into the Tones section of the library and move it into the Tones folder inside your media folder.
I've just checked the current version of iTunes behaves as I've desribed, which it does for me at least.
You may need to have some tones in your library for the tones tab to display when the device is connected.

  • Cannot move a ringtone to the tones folder

Can anyone help please...this is driving us round the bend!!!
We have been trying to create a ringtone from a song in iTunes but cannot move it to the tones folder. We have followed all the instructions available on-line and changed the song to an AAC file, reduced it to under 30 seconds etc etc. It is described as a ringtone in the Get Info box but we cannot move it to the Tones folder in the library and therefore cannot sync to the iphone.
    Many thanks

    Changed the extension?
When posting this kind of question it helps us to know which directions you followed by posting a link.  Some people carefully follow direction to do things such as moving their "itunes library", then we find the directions they followed were for just moving itunes media and not the whole library.

You can re-download the ringtone but it will not be free like apps.

  • Purchased ringtone, but can't move to "ringtones" on iTunes

I've downloaded a ringtone for my iPhone 4 from "100 most popular ringtones" on iTunes. Oddly, it doesn't appear to be an actual ringtone. When imported into my "Music" section of iTunes, it will not allow me to drag-and-drop it into "ringtones." I've tried pretty much everything: magic web suggestions to change to m4r, etc., but nothing works. I figure, well, I've paid a whole 99 cents for ringtone from iTunes, but I can't use it. Hmmm. Any thoughts?

Yep, same here. I too also purchased one and it refuses to go into my ring tones folder for the iPhone.
iTunes is the most worthless POS I have EVER dealt with in my life. I had this ringtone once on my phone. So I hook up the iPhone after a reinstall of the OS and BAM I lose my ringtone and music again.

  • Purchased ringtones not apprearing in the rintone menu

Hi I upgraded from the iPhone4S to the iPhone5c.  My previously purchased rintones were not in the menu to avaiable ringtones.  I assumed this was due to the old tones not working with the new iOS.  So I purchased and downloaded a new ringtone via my phone on the iTunes store.  This file does show up in my musci but is still not avaiable as a selection in the ringtone menu.  I thought I may be able to move this over to the tones section of my phone so I connected my phone to my laptop and tried to manually move the file and iTunes wont allow it.  I did find my old ringtones listed in my tones folder on my phone but they are grayed out and I can't do anythign with tme I cannot even play them.  Is there anythign that I can do to get these working?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jenn

Connect up to iTunes and look for the Ringtones as an Option to check prior to a Sync.  There should be a specific choice that must be selected to download those custom or purchased Ringtones to your iPhone.

  • Purchased ringtones not showing

Hi I bought an album of ringtones from iTunes however they will not show up as ringtones in either iTunes or my iPhone. So far a waste of $9! I hve looked everywhere and tried lots of stuff but to no avail. I even tried changing the extension from .mva to .mvr - at least now the info shows up as a ringtone but will not put it in the tones folder. i have deleted them and brought them back in severl times but no change.
Any ideas?  I thought if I did the right thing and actually purchased the ringtones that they should work??
    Cheers
    Nick

Check to be sure they are really ringtones and not just music files that can be converted to ringtones.  To check, right-click on the files in iTunes, select Get Info, on the Summary tab they must say Kind: Ringtone.  If the don't, follow the steps shown in this video to convert them to ringtones, then sync them to your phone: http://cnettv.cnet.com/create-free-ringtones-itunes-10/9742-1_53-50093086.html.
