Purple envelope icon when start up

I have a 2000 IMac. When I turn it on a little purple icon with a question mark and blinking (two faces symbol)appear inside the envelope. Nothing else happens. Is there anyway to fix the machine to get it to start up?

You should post your question here:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=132
But it sounded like you lost some system files (for booting up).
Reinstall the system from CD, have your CD inserted or have it ready.
Restart your iMac while holding down C key.

    Hi
I am wondering How to fix the " flashing question mark after the finder icon when starting up" without an apple keyboard. I have 2 of those .7Ghz emacs so just wanna fix them
    Thx

    Hi,
    >I am using a wireless standard keyboard so maybe the emac doesn't regognise it
Installation of driver software may be required. Do not expect any wireless device to automatically work with a Mac unless guaranteed to do so. In a case like this, use a wired USB keyboard (a PC keyboard should be OK) and a wired mouse to begin with.

  • Why do I receive a 'gear' icon instead of the Apple icon when starting up iPad2?

    Hello all,
I searched the iPad community forums with no luck. My younger brother won an iPad2 at his 20th anniversary High School reunion, since he already had an iPad2 he suggested we give it as an Anniversary present to our parents. Since our parents are going to Italy this fall I thought it was a great idea as they will be able to use it as a resourse while traveling as well as keep us updated regarding their travels. (They have been amazed and curious at my iPhone 3GS and our iPads so we thought it would be great way to introduce them to a tablet.)
When they first turned on the iPad2 last night we received an image of what appears to be a gold/bronze mechanical gear instead of the familar Apple logo. Instead of the normal home screen we recieve the following screen. (http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/zz32/ScotchManGSO/ipad2screen.png) The home screen was initially fun to look at due to the pop culture references built into the icons. (Being a Star Wars fan the 'AT-AT' Walker icon was my favorite.)
Unfortunately the fun quickly wore off as we could not restore the iPad2 to the factory defaults using iTunes. (By the way, the iPad2 capactiy only indicated 11GB instead of 16GB.)
My best guess, although I just entered the world of Apple back in 2009 with my iphone purchase, is that the iPad does not have the iOS loaded. In moving through the applications it appears that the applications are designed to test the iPad display, charging, gryoscope, etc.
Any help in restoring the iPad2 to the normal home screen would be appreciated greatly!

What you have there is either a jailbroken unit with some crazy custom UI or an eastern knockoff. Give us some photos of the ipad itself, mainly the back and some experts can help.
If you plug it into iTunes does iTunes even acknowledge that an ipad is connected? If it does then try a restore.
Failing that, head down to an apple store and see what they can do for you.

  • Exclamation Icon when starting a new CMYK document in cs5??

When I start a new CMYK document in Illustrator CS 5  I'm getting the yellow exclamation mark to the right which you can see in the picture I attached.  When I choose RGB there is no exclamation!  What is causing this, and how can I fix it, or is it normal?  Thanks!

Nothing wrong here. It merely tells you that there is no matching document template and that you have modified your settings. It looks a bit awkward, but nothing to worry.

  • Sometimes when starting my iMac it shows a folder icon with a Question mark in it. Mac does not start up, only when shutting down and restart again solves it

Sometimes when starting up my iMac it shows only a folder icon with a question mark in it. Nothing happened. Only when start up again it runs ok.
What can be the cause of this.
    thanks for your help

That's an indication your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Open System Preferences > Startup Disk
    Select:  MacintoshHD OS X
For OS X v10.4, v10.5, and v10.6 >    A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Helps when you ask for help to tell us which Mac OS X is installed.
If you aren't certain, click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.

    Have you tried resetting Preferences?
A logical next step would be to reset your Preferences.
    To reset Preferences:
If Photoshop is already open on your screen, close it (Quit). Then hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and start Photoshop.
A dialog box will pop up asking if you want to delete the existing Preferences file (the "Settings"). Click Yes in the dialog box. The existing Preferences file will be scrapped and a new one will be created.

  • Email envelope/@ icon incorrectly displaying when ...

Using the nokia email app with IMAP  (gmail).  If I get new mail, I see on my main screen the subject and a 'closed envelope' in the middle of the screen, and in the upper right hand corner a tiny icon of an envelope with an @ symbol on it pops up.
If I then read my email somewhere else, like on the web, I would expect both icons on the phone to indicate that the mail has been read...but that's not what happens.
After reading mail, the subject with closed envelope changes to an 'open' envelope - perfect!
But, the envelope/@ icon in the upper right hand corner is still there. When you go into your mailbox, and exit again (don't need to open any mail), the icon disappears, realizing that there is no unread mail.
Is there a fix for this, or could Nokia please fix it?
    Thanks

This is known issue with Nokia Messaging that updates to Email done outside Mobile client dont get synced unless you sync manually. Same case with Notification icons.
You can write to [email protected] for further questions as you can get direct and fast reply there.

  • What does it mean when starting up, all you get is an envelope with a question mark in it?

what does it mean when starting up, all you get is an envelope with a question mark in it?

You should reinstall OS X. See the following for reinstalling instructions for Lion/Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac shows global icon when it starts.

    Dear All,
My iMac suddenly started shows a black & white global icon when it switch on. The icon flashes for almost a minute, and start up page finally appears and OS X enter, everything works alright, but the icon worries me.
Is that because I made wrong setting?
    Please help. Thanks.
    Alice

    Hi Alice,
It's not a problem. What you have done is set Network Startup as your startup volume within System Preferences. Do the following:
    1. Fire up System Preferences
    2. Select the Startup Disk icon
    3. Within the Startup Disk preferences select your internal hd (it will be a blue folder marked Mac OS X, 10.4.9 on Macintosh HD or something along those lines).
That's it. All should be well again.

  • Unable to create the temporary folder. Error 183 when starting Distiller

New information discovered - see end of message!
Full error message is (window title is Acrobat Distiller):
"Unable to create the temporary folder
Error: 183 - cannot create a file when that file already exists."
I have no idea what file or what folder it is referring to. This is on an x86 Vista notebook and the message comes up when starting the notebook and also if you manually start Distiller 8. Updating did not help, nor did turning off the UAC, or running Distiller as Administrator. In the latter case, Distiller will open correctly, but the next time you need to use it, it fails. With the UAC turned off, the behavior is for it to show the Distiller window for a fraction of a second and close immediately. I also gave the user full rights to the C:\Program Files\Adobe folder and lower. Made no difference.
Coincidental with this is that the PDFMOfficeAddIn.dll add-in will not enable in Word - when it is checked, and I hit OK, I get the message:
"The connected state of Office Add-Ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed."
All of this is going on when logged in as an administrator. I have seen folks post about this issue, but no answers that actually fiux the problem, just suggest what I have already tried. Anyone seen this one?
The user is highly mobile, so I am not going to have a chance to work on her computer again until next week.
    NEW INFO
I tried removing and reinstalling as administrator and the problem remains. However while trying to troubleshoot, I discovered some more details.
The message is being thrown when acrotray.exe is started as a process in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Control Set\Run and then tries to run acrodist.exe (which fails, BTW). If I don't let it run there and run acrotray, exe as administrator, then acrodist.exe runs as a process without an error. Additionally, stopping it from running in the registry, and then starting MS Word, the Acrobat add-in does load and even though there is an error thown, it still creates the PDF! I have other Vista 32 notebooks running various Acrobat versions with no problems.
Another key thing I found out is that Acrobat started throwing the error after an HP Scanjet 8400 and its software were installed. I tried explicitly giving the user (already an administrator) full rights to the Acrobat, HP and Read IRIS directories. Did not help the problem. I have to think that there is some interaction there, but sure don't know what it is.

what i did to eliminate that error message, i don't think it eliminated th
e problem but now i can reboot and log in OK, was 2 things:
i went into my system registry and unchecked to start at startup and then disavled it.
i also had to go to each adobe icon, right click, go to properites, and than make all selections set to be administator.

  • MBP  17" running OS10.9.2....... how do I reformat it and then instal OS 10.6.8 on it.... have put in SL disc and pressed C when starting but I cannot install the OS

I have MBP 17" running OS 10.9.2....... I need to have OS 10.6.8 so I can contiue running Quicken 2006. I have this on my Mac Pro but am switching to iMac and hence will dedicate laptop to finances. I pressed option when starting and got disk utilities and erased the HD..... I put in the Snow Leopard disc and pressed C when starting but then when I try and install it shows icon of my HD and says I cannot start up from that disk....... I get the same thing when I insert the #1 instal disc that came with the computer. How do I instal OS 10.6.8 (if I go recovery mode it will insatll 10.9.2 which I don't want on this laptop.
    Thanks for any help.

The grey disk says OS 10.6...... i tried it as well as the SL disk with the C pressed....... what happens is that it directs you to agree etc and then asks where you want it installed..... the icon of the computer HD however has the yellow exclammation sign saying I cannot start from that disk.
    My super drive is working.......
Since I need to get to Quicken for taxes etc what I have done presently is formatted a LaCie rugged drive, partitioned it and when I attach that drive to the MBP and start up again I was able to install on the external drive....I am presently downloading the combo upgrade that will take me to 10.6.8
I still don't understand why it wont instal on the MBP I i know you cannot go earlier than what the machine shipped with but since this is 10.6 it should.I have a Mac Pro with one internal drive running 10.9.2 and the other 10.6.8 and I'd select the earlier system to start when I wanted to do my finances. I have upgraded to an iMac and hence cannot use that for acessing the earlier system
Interestingly, I partitioned another LaCie drive and was able when running 10.6.8 on Mac Pro to install on the external drive...... however when selecting that ext. HD for starting it never did restart with it , always restartd using the 10.9.2 system that was actiually on the other disc.

  • Error parsing envelope: (1, 1) Start of root element expected.

    Hello BI Publisher:
The issue has been resolved. I found the cause the problem. The following line in my WSDL was preventing BI Publisher from reading the WSDL, which will return the "Error parsing envelope" message:
    <xsd:attribute name="dateTimeTagFormat" fixed="xsd" use="required"/>
Once I removed the above line, BI Publisher was able to read the WSDL without any issues, and run the report.

    Hello BI Publisher:
The issue has been resolved. I found the cause the problem. The following line in my WSDL was preventing BI Publisher from reading the WSDL, which will return the "Error parsing envelope" message:
    <xsd:attribute name="dateTimeTagFormat" fixed="xsd" use="required"/>
Once I removed the above line, BI Publisher was able to read the WSDL without any issues, and run the report.

    Hello BI Publisher:
I am trying to define a new dataset of type "Web Service", with a Complex Type configuration using WS-Security 2004. I get the following error when I try to "View" it:
**"javax.xml.soap.SOAPException: Error parsing envelope: (1, 1) Start of root element expected."**
This happens even if my Application Server (where the service is located) is not running, so I suspect that the error happens before the Publisher server tries to send the SOAP envevelop to the service server.
    Publisher Version: Release 10.1.3.4
    Complex Type: True
    Username: User1
