Purpose of creating a vault when using referenced files

I have a laptop with a limited size SSD and recenlty installed Aperture to manage my collection of images and video clips (from camera so short). My assets are currently on DVD's and so have referenced these DVD's within Aperature. My long range plan is to copy these DVD's to external drives so that one drive can be at home and the other at work for backup purposes.
My question pertains to the purpose of the vault when media is being referenced. Does the vault back up thumbnails, previews (1280/1280 at 6/med) and metadata...etc? Although most of my media (all but my current Project) is referenced my library file is currently 12GB. I have 13,426 photos/video being referenced on DVD with the current project being referenced with a folder on my laptop's drive. The idea was to monitor the size of the folder of the curren project so as to move to DVD when the size approches 4GB.
I noticed with off-line referenced files that you can not do much with the previews. I figured that with the preview being 1280x1280 one could use the Email function, share...etc. Other than of course previewing and slideshows is there a reason that previews can not be smaller the 1280x ?
Thanks for your time, someone....

I would recommend at least making your previews the resolution of your main display so that you can see the images full-screen when your referenced files are not connected (btw, the resolution of your display will have an asterisk beside it in the preview size drop-down box).
I have my preview size set to 1920 (or maybe even the size up from that -- I can't remember for sure) so that I can easily create slideshows for my HDTV if I want. But here's the catch, I also chose to disable previews for new projects in the Aperture preferences, and also turned off "maintain previews" for all projects in the library. I only create previews for my "better" images. The reason for this is that I'm still very much an amateur photographer who relies on taking multiple shots, stacking them, and then rating and selecting favourites for sharing and personal use. I didn't want my hard drive filling up with thousands of previews that will never be used for anything.
Food for thought!

  • Why is my Aperture 3 libarary so big even when using referenced files?

I noticed a large decrease in HDD space in my finder window since installing Aperture 3 demo.
I checked the Aperture package contents and low and behold- 26GBs of thumbnails for far fewer "items" then I have photos. My entire 28,000 image iphoto library is only 135GBs.
Why does Aperture take up so much space for referenced files? LR does not do this.
I really want to like this program but it's making it hard.
    Gene

Remember that AP can also be creating preview files for each of your master images and depending on the size and quality setting that you have set for these in your preferences your AP file will vary in size accordingly.
To check on these settings go to your preferences in the pul down menu/Aperture.

  • HT4889 I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. How do I now 'migrate' all the files from both accounts into one to save myself having two accounts, both of which are me? Help?

I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. I have read that I probably should not have skipped migration in the initial set up and the problem would have been avoided but, alas, here I am. Does anyone know how I can 'migrate' all the files from one of the accounts that has been created to the other, so then I can delete it and have a single user on the computer seeing as I am the only person using it? I have read starting again, if this is the way to go, where is the best place to start 'starting again'?

Yes definitely should see it but its not coming up (I don't think) when I log out of 2nd user and into the main account. Opening finder in the 2nd account, I can obviously find the public folder because thats where I dropped all the files, but when in the main account, it can't be found. The only public folder that comes up is the folder for that account (main account) and it does not display files I'm looking for. Frustrating....
EDIT: Have found it through a round-about way but all music and photo and movie etc files have a red stop sign disallowing them from being transferred. Can you guess what the next question will be?

  • Masters in Aperture Library Using Referenced Files

I use a MBP with an SSD to hold my Aperture 3 library.
I use a G-RAID to store my images and use Referenced Files.
All was good until yesterday, I deleted my Thumbnails to recreate them and remove the orphans.
After restarting Aperture and the processing time to recreate the Thumbnails (AP.Minis, Ap.Thumbnails, and AP.Tinies) I noticed my AP library was huge.
After inspecting the contents, there is now 65Gb worth of Masters, why would these be there since I use Referenced files and why would they have just now shown up after rebuilding my Thumbnails?

    Remember:
-- A RAW file cannot be edited. It can only be written in a camera (or scanner, etc.) To be seen, it must be read through a RAW developer. The RAW developer (or converter, if you prefer) can apply changes to the bitstream (called "adjustments" in Aperture) but those changes always live in a separate file, called a "version" in Aperture. EVERY master image file in Aperture has at least one version file. The two are combined, in real time, every time you see a file. Thus questions about the Aperture library becoming corrupted are a bit moot - if you lose your library you will lose your edits. The only way to "save" edits to a RAW file is either adjust it in Aperture (or Lightroom) and let the program combine the two, or convert the file to an industry standard format, like TIFF or JPEG.
-- Aperture uses a "non-destructive" workflow. This means that it never really edits ANY file - not even a JPEG. This avoids the problem of recompressing JPEGS each time they are opened and close. So even JPEGS remain unaltered with your "edits" or "adjustments" being stored in one or more versions.
The only time you need to "save" a file in Aperture is when you need a new file in a specific format to give to someone. Until then, Aperture happily keeps track of your original images (managed or referenced) and the corresponding "edits" which it stores in a version linked to the original image file.
There are many reasons to prefer managed over referenced or vice versa, but fears of database integrity should not be one of them. You are making a lot of work for yourself - put the Aperture Vault on your server and/or use Time Machine. "Exporting" is a terrible way to try to make backups - it will take forever and you will end up with files scattered all over the place, defeating the purpose for which you bought Aperture in the first place.
    Hope this helps.

It used to work in previuos version of Nitrox. I can't use struts tiles because the tiles content is dynamic (run time) and I need it to be static (at compile time).
Have you encountered this problem? What is the fix? Nitrox bug?
    I need your help please,
    Alberto

    M7,
I found the problem  . In the java Build path having the default (ALL) is not picking up the content of the package. I had to use add multiple and include all the folders and subfolders (many L) in my packages. After that I added *.java and *.properties to select all the java files. Now it is working. I assume this is a bug in Nitrox. The default ALL should include the all the files in the path.
    Thanks,

I have one folder with several projects all of which Aperure can not find the original.
Have you checked inside your Aperture library, if the original files are still there?
Try to find out, when the images in those projects have been originally imported, then open the Aperture library by ctrl-clicking it and using the command "Show package contents" from the pop-up menu. In the window that will open, select the folder "Masters" and browse the contents. You need to find the subfolder with the year you imported the images, then the folders with the month and the day.
Are your original files still there?
If yes, copy them to a folder on your desktop for safe-keeping, and then try, if repairing the permissions and the other Furst Aid tools will help Aperture to connect to these missing files again - see this link:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
If the First Aid Tools don't help, then check, if Aperture has moved the missing images to a "recovered folder". If not, reimport the images, you saved to your Desktop and use the Lift&Stamp tool to transfer any adjustment and captions to your reimported images.

  • How to create bootable USB when using spinrite

    Dear Fellow Community Members
I hope you can help me here as I'm stumped on how to actually get spinrite to run as I'm stuck at the dos c:
    I have a Thinkpad E530 on windows 7 OS.
Windows no longer boots because of numerous bad sectors on the HDD.
I want to retrieve/recover files which were created since the last backup.
A friend in the tech industry recommended 'spinrite' which I've purchased.
I've followed the instructions on the website (https://www.grc.com/sr/faq.htm) to create a bootable USB with doswin98 files loaded.
I didn't go through the config.sys step when creating the bootable USB because the PC no longer works.
When I boot the PC with the USB HDD up via F12 command/boot menu, I get the following:
    Microsoft (R) windows 98
    C:\> spinrite
    Bad command or file name
    C:\>
Can someone help me with the next step/commands to trigger spinrite to run? Or is there something I've missed?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and welcome,
Are you familiar with/comfortable with Linux?  I can't help you with the Win 98 approach you're using, but I am able to boot a Spinrite img using grub2 and memdisk on a flash drive.
I just finished a rather long article (not fully proof-read yet) about bootable flash drives that includes booting Spinrite.  It's much too long to post here so I'll link it:  A FOB STORY: some notes on bootable flash drives
The Spinrite part of the article is sort of buried in the mess.  If you're not comfortable with Linux and low-level stuff like installing a boot loader on a flash drive, it's probably not for you.  Better to wait for help with the technique you're using.

  • Error while reading raw file created in previous task using raw file destination

I am reading a flat file and creating an raw file using raw file destination.  path of the raw file is in a variable.  now I am reading the raw file using the rawfile source component. I am able to execute if the .raw file is available.  But
when we deploy into the production the .raw will be created runtime, so the package is getting failed while evualting the variable which hold the path of the variable.  since the .raw is not available i am not able to proceed further. it's in ssis 2008

I am also using a raw file destination using a variable.
I have set DelayValidation = true on both the DataFlow task and even the Sequence Container.
I get the same error when I run the entire ssis package, however
when I run the individual container or individual task it runs without an error.
Also, something interesting is the error is not the same path as the variable name.
Warning: The system cannot find the file specified.

    The variable is "C:\Temp\ProjectName\RawFileName"
I have other RawFile sources in this same project, but only this one file is giving me grief.
Any other suggestions?  Is this a bug?
Have you set an expression for connection string property of raw file? Is it based on variable/expression or configuration? If yes, check the value of variable/ expression or configuraton item at runtime by putting a breakpoint in the pre execute event of task
and make sure path value its getting is correct. It may be that path is getting a different value at runtime due to expression/configuration set for it.

  • How to use "referenced files" in MY case?

I have a MacBook pro, which I bring with me between home and studio.
Until now, I've been storing my shots on an external HD. This means that I cannot see my photos when I'm home.
I've been looking into the "referenced files"-thing.
I would like to be able to see a preview of all my shots also when I only have my MacBook and not the external drive. When I shoot, I would like to store NEW shots on my MacBook at first (to edit, tag etc.) but then put them on my external drive for storage.
I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. Can anyone please explain or link me to a place where I can read about it?
    Thanks in advance

I haven't done this yet, but soon I'll need to coordinate a laptop and a desktop machine. So don't take my word for anything!
It sounds as though you have Aperture set up so that the laptop machine's library is on the external drive -- not just the images that make up the heart of the library. Is that right? The alternative would be to tell Aperture its library is on the laptop, but have the library reference master images on the external drive. Previews -- if you have Aperture set to create and/or maintain previews in any or all projects -- are in the library, which is on the computer whether or not you have the drive containing the masters with you.
    (Am I going wrong yet??)
But I'm still not clear, when master images are referenced, where Aperture stores versions, adjustments, metadata; in the library or with the referenced images?
Anyway, it seems as though this arrangement should allow you to import new images into a project in the laptop's library while on the road. Then I don't think you even have to export and re-import the project -- when you're hooked back up to the external you just "relocate masters" for the new project onto the external drive.
Somebody please straighten me out if I've got all this wrong.

  • Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving a file?

Is there a way to reduce the size of a final PDF created for print when saving in any software (especially illustrator)? I don't want any quality to decrease at the same time. Thanks!

Personally I would avoid optimizing the PDF's via Adobe Acrobat Pro unless you understand what you are removing from the PDF; having said that, it is the most effective way to reduce the file-size in the right hands.
If I am sending out layouts for commercial print I change my default Print / Export setting from Standard to PDF/A-1b:2005 (CMYK). This will resolve a lot of common print problems for print-ready documents and it should embed your fonts and flatten transparencies etc.
If your document is still too large you run an Audit Space Usage using Adobe Acrobat Pro. In the left pane enable 'Content' and then hit the button in the top left corner of the Content Pane and choose Audit Space Usage.

  • Debugging mode stopped automatically when using xml file load

    Dear Sir,
I am trying to develop a new add-on using xml files for creating new forms. In fact I was using the sample code delivered with the SDK ( WorkingWithXml - under VB.NET). The Problem is that when I am in the debuging mode and after the form load. the application goes out of the debugging mode and stop action.
In fact what i was trying to do first is to create a new menu and then when i click on this menu a new form appear but once the menu is loaded the application stop the debugging mode automatically.
Can somebody clarify to me what I am doing wrong and why the debugging mode is stopped automatically, noting that i am still in the add-on developpement phase.
As i mentioned above i used the WorkingWithXml sample code (VB.NET) and i have adjusted in a way to load menu and then on the menu click i load my form.
    Please advice
    Best Regards

    Hi Mary,
Put your code between in a Try Catch block. In the Catch part use the following:
    oApplication.MessageBox("CompError: " & oCompany.GetLastErrorCode.ToString & ", " & oCompany.GetLastErrorDescription & vbCrLf & "Message: " & ex.Message)
This should give you a clearer idea of what the error is all about.
The most likely reason is that there is something wrong with your XML file.
    Regards,
    Vítor Vieira

I am trying to create a panorama.  When I enter FILE > NEW > the Photomere panorama option does not appear.  the only options are Blank file and file from clipboard.  This is in Elements 11 on Windows 8.1 OS.  How do I get Photomerge Panorama to appear.

Since PSE11, you access the photomerge option in the 'Enhance' menu, last option. Or you can use the organizer (menu Edit / Photomerge).

  • Settings when using mp4 files from Samsung GS3

    Hi,
Does anyone know the settings I should select when creating a New PE10 Project and using mp4 files from a Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile phone?
    Thanks

    Ms Spielberg
If you are using video files from the Samsung Galaxy S3, from what I have read, it offers 1080p up to 30, that being 1920 x 1080 @ 30 progressive frames per second. Is that correct? If so, please consider.
The project preset should match the properties of your source media. In setting the Premiere Elements 10 Windows project preset (new project dialog), the choice of one of the FIip project presets range from frames sizes 640 x 480 to 1280 x 720. So, they would not be a match.
Consequently, I would ask you to consider the project preset if your source media from this Samsung Galaxy S3 are as I have read 1080p30.
NTSC (or PAL as the case may be)
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p30 or DSLR 1080p30 @ 29.97
In Premiere Elements 10 after you set the project preset, then you import your media with Get Media.
    a. If you can connect your phone to the computer, you could explore Get Media/Flip/AVCHD/Cameras, Phones or Removable Drive as I think SG is suggesting.
    or
    b. If your phone files are saved to a hard drive location, then Get Media/Files and Folders.
Are you also asking for export suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • CS5 Photomerge hanging when using many files

    Hello,
I have managed to work around the issue, but it's annoying nonetheless.
The basic problem is that I've started creating very wide and tall Bokeh Panoramas or 'The Brenzier Method' http://www.ryanbrenizer.com/category/brenizer-method/
From Lightroom I select the images I want and 'merge to panorama in PS'.  When I use say 2 - 30 images it's fine.  However when I use say 160 (ridiculous I know) it will hang when merging the files, processor usage stays on 13%, but the progress dialogue bar doesn't animate.  I tried it through photomerge and 'align all layers' from the edit menu.  I reduced this ridiculous amount to 60 and if I chose the 'vignette removal' option on the photomerge dialogue it will hang on this process after starting to create the panorama.  If I don't do the vignette, it will create the panorama.
I know that it will depend upon the complexity of the merge, it's just annoying that it would fail whereas Microsoft ICE will complete the panorama without fail, it just may be of a lesser accuracy due to parallax.
Other than using less images and attempting to overlap correctly, is there much else that can be done?
I'm using an up to date version of CS5 64bit windows.  running on a 16gb Core i7 2600k.  The merged final image occupies 13gig of ram.  I have the scratch disc on a spare 2tb drive with about 1.5 tb free.
    Paul

Mr_Fujisawa, I just wanted to come back on here and thank you for opening my mind to the "Brenizer Method", which I had not heard of before.  I've been experimenting with it today and enjoying the results!  Up to now I put effort into getting everything in focus all across my panos, which are generally landscapes.  It didn't dawn on me to use stitching on subjects up close.
