Question

I opened a Pages file and updating lost the linking of the text boxes. Have tried to re-link without success. I opened a new blank page to learn how to link floating text boxes and opened Pages Help. This instructed me as follows
To link to another text box or create a linked text box, click the blue square on the right side of the text box, and click another text box or click somewhere on the page (or choose Format > Text Box > Add Linked Text Box). To cancel linking, press Escape.The new text box has a solid blue square on its left side. This indicates that this text box is linked to a previous one.

However, choosing 'Format' does not show 'Text Box' or 'Add Linked Text Box'.
Also the instruction mention 'a solid blue square'. This fleetingly appears occasionally as I click in random places.
My text boxes are still not linked!

Pages ’09 v4.3 was the last word processing application from Apple to offer linked Text boxes. Since the bullet point you included above is in a Pages ’09 v4 manual, it does not apply to any Pages v5 application released since Oct. 2013.
When you open a Pages ’09 v4(.3) created document in any Pages v5 application, it will quietly set about removing any unsupported features and functionality when converting the older document into the new v5 document architecture. Your Text boxes will remain, but the linking ability, and the blue Text box linking decorations will be removed. Once Pages v5 autosaves this document, it is unreadable by Pages ’09 v4.3. Since Pages v5 has stripped the Text box linking functionality from the document, exporting it back to Pages ’09, gives you Text boxes that need to be relinked using Pages ’09 v4.3.
When (if) you updated to Pages v5 or later, and if you had Pages ’09 v4.3 installed, it was silently moved into /Applications/iWork '09 folder. Use that application, if you have it, and the manual instructions will work. Note: double-clicking on any Pages document after Pages v5 or later is installed will default open in that version of Pages.
