Quality and speed to burn cd

Greetings,
I'm about to put my apps on a cd, and they ask is i format it to mac only or mac and pc...
If I choose the second one, will it be of less mac quality ?
and what about the speed ? what speed chould I choose, and what is the diffirence ?
Thanks
"If you don't ask you'll never know..."   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   ......

I know you don't want my help but I am going to try one more time. Hopefully you won't get mad at me this time.
"-you want it for mac or both?"
It does not matter which format you use to burn the CD in terms of the data being safe and reliable.
If you are doing a backup and all you will ever use it on is your Mac then feel free to burn it as Mac only. If you were burning pictures, for example, to share with someone who has a PC then you would want to burn it in a format that was compatible with both the Mac and the PC.
"-at with speed do you want me to copy"
Speed is not an issue. There are a lot of variables when it comes to speed such as the speed of your burner, the software you are using to do the burn with and the type of media you are burning it on to. I generally burn CD-R at 8x but I can only burn a DVD at 1x as that is the best my burner will do, at least on my G-4 Mac. On my wife's G-5 iMac I can burn at faster speeds because her hardware can handle higher speeds. It also depends on the media you buy. If you look at a CD-R it will usually list a speed range. If you buy media that is rated at 16X it may not burn reliably at 52X. In that case I would set my burner at 16X.
The easiest thing to do is to just set the speed to "maximum" You can do this in iTunes if you are burning music by going to iTunes preferences and selecting the advanced icon then selecting the burning tab and then selecting "maximum". You may be able to do it in Toast also although I don't use it so I don't know. That way the computer can determine the best speed. Let the computer do it as that is what it is for.
One thing that would help would be if you would list what kind of hardware you have in your profile. Right now it says something like "if you don't ask you won't know" Take a minute and help those who are trying to help you by putting the proper information there such as your model of mac (iMac, e Mac, whatever) and information such as how much ram you have. This will help people with your questions and help eliminate confusion.

  • Inferior quality and speed of DVD rip, edit, and burn

I recently ripped, edited,(deleted a scene) and burned a new DVD which I might say took a very long time. It played fine on my computer, but wasn't quite DVD quality when viewed on our T.V. I was wondering if someone could tell me if it was the software I used to rip,(used a trial version of iSkysoft DVD ripper) or the editing which I used iMovie '08 or the burning process, which I used iDVD? Is there any software that can produce top quality DVDs that will run on my iMac? And is there any way to speed all this up or is my iMac just not powerful enough?

When that DVD was created first the images on it were heavily compressed to meet the DVD standard. Then you ripped this compressed material, edited it and then made a new DVD - and creating this second DVD means the already compressed material as further compressed to make the second DVD. The quality failing is due to the fact that the material has been compressed twice.

  • Superdrive UJ-825 won't load Superdrive Update 2.0 and won't burn 4x

My subject sums it up. When I load Superdrive Firmware Update 2.0, it says there is no drive that needs updating. Nevertheless, the Apple website says that my firmware should be updated and my Matshita UJ-825 has never burned a disc faster than 2x. Any help?

After doing a little searching, I found that more than likely your issue is being caused by the media you are using.
I suggest you have a look at the Media Guide.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    I personally prefer Maxell 16X DVD-R Media.
This Newer Media is very high Quality and it will burn at the highest rate your drive will allow.
I also suggest you choose media in the individual jewel cases over the cheaper bargin basement multi spools of 30-50-or 100 these have shown to be of lesser quality in the pickyer Mac DVD Burners.

  • HT1583 When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls

Hi, please help me When I render my project in IDVD, video and audio runs properly, but when I burn it in professional quality and burning is finished there was no audio on the last two chapters, one audio is attached to the clip and the other one is from itunes, pls help

    Hi
    My first two thoughts
    • Shared to Media Browser - BUT as Large or HD - try Medium !
    • audio from iTunes - use to go silent
    - in iTunes
    - Create a new PlayList with needed audio
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
    - use the files on this CD in Your Movie project - I ALWAYS DO - and only use .aiff ever - never .mp3'
    My notes on this:
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    Minuscular - - 176x144
    Mobile - - - - - 480x360
    Medium - - - - 640x480
    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • I am using using IDVD to create slide shows.  When viewed on my computer the pictures are clear and of high quality.  When I burn the slide show to a disk and play it back, the pictures are blurry and of poor quality.

I am using IDVD to create slide shows.  When viewed on my computer, the pictures are clear and of high quality.  When I burn the slide show to a disk and play it back, the pictures are blury and of poor quality.  Is there a setting that controls the quality of the burn and if there is, where do I find it?  Thank you.

The Mac software - iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD are not the best with the Ken Burns effect (zoom in/out effect), so you might want to minimize that effect; also, if your subjects are wearing stripes for instance, that will have an effect if you zoom. There is better software available for slideshows; however, I do not know of any that is free (and does a good job). I've used Photo to Movie for some time; it does a fine job even in HD, but you have to pay for it. I use iDVD extensively, but only to add a menu, theme, special effects, etc. and then to burn it.

  • Best Import format for quality and size to use on iPod and to burn

I want to import from CD's to primarly download to iPod but also to occassionly burn a CD. I would like to be able to set import format 1 time for best results for both. If this is not possible then what would be best format for iPod (smallest/best quality) and best format for burn's (size doesn't matter, ha!ha!) but quality does.

It all depends on your personal preferences and your ears (the quality of your hearing).
Recalling some recent topics in this forum, I remember one person, who insisted to rip all his tracks into a full (lossless) format and another person who was happy with converting all his tracks in 48 kbps.
As for myself, I rip all my CDs in Apple Lossless, which result in full audio quality files having about half the file sizes of AIFF and WAV (which both are uncompressed).
Then I apply the proper tags, artwork and (sometimes) lyrics and convert them to AAC 128 kbps files for 'daily' use on the iPod, iTunes and burning on Audio CD for the car CD-player. I then store the Apple Lossless files on an external disk for archival purposes.
In your case, if size doesn't matter, I would rip them in AIFF or Apple Lossless.
AIFF has the advantage to be a universal format, which can be read by every application that works with audio files.
    File size comparison (average MB/minute):
    AIFF and WAV: 10 MB
    Apple Lossless: 5 MB
    AAC 128 kbps: 1 MB
    Hope this helps.

  • DVD-R and CD-R Burn Speeds Slow after Tiger

Hi, I just installed Tiger a few weeks ago and noticed that when I am in the finder and record or burn a CD-R, it does so at 8X max, and a DVD-R data disc burns at 1X only, instead of the 2X its supposed to do it. Any help is welcomed.
Also having problems when inserting a DVD-R, it no longer askes what to open (IDVD, finder, DiskUtility) even if I never checked the always do this, it automatically opens IDVD everytime and doesnt let me open it in the finder. The solution for this is that I have to place the IDVD application on a External Harddrive and then insert the disk and I get the dialog box again, but once I pass the application back to the applications folder it always defaults into opening that.

Your burning speed isn't determined by your operating system, it's determined by your SuperDrive. So if you have an 8X max for CD-R and 1X for a DVD-R that's what you're stuck with.
You can however reflash your firmware to trick your drive into ripping and burning a little faster. Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll e-mail you the info on how to do it. It's been a while, so I have to look up the file again. Also, be sure that's the SuperDrive you have because the new firmware is drive specific!

  • Best Speed 2 Burn DVD's?

    Hello,
I just replaced my G4's CD-R with a DVD-R. I've read posts offering conflicting advice on the best 'speed' to burn important backup disks. Does anyone know if there's solid info available regarding this question?
Also, is there some kind of software that can check the 'quality' of the burn?
    Thanks for your time.
    J.C.

Many G4 Macs were designed before there were fast DVD burners, and use a slow speed ATA bus for the optical drive, and can't send data fast enough to burn over 8X. If you try to burn at 16X, the drive will run out of data and reduce speed, or even worse, go into stop and start mode. This can make a burn slower than at 8X. On my Quicksilver, I could see the drive's LED through the crack in the door, and it would be on solid at 8X, but start flashing at higher speeds. A DVD burned at a steady 8x is probably more reliable than one burned in spurts of 16X.
All the OSX burning application (Finder, iTunes, Disk Utility) let you set burn speed, except iDVD. It can be used to create a disk image file, which can be burned ay a controlled speed with Disk Utility.

  • FCP Novice needs help with video quality and FCP 5!!

    Hi,
I have a real problme that I cannot seem to fix. I think its because I am doing something really wrong!
I have a Sony HC42E MiniDV Camcorder which by default records video in full widescreen. I recorded several tapes this way and have now begun trying to edit them in FCP 5.04 (Tiger 10.4.6). Whenever I log and capture my clips they appear to be fuzzzy and unclear on the Mac monitor whilst being totally crisp and sharp on the camcorder viewfinder. I tried capturing using the DV PAL 48Khz Anamorphic Preset which keeps everything the right size (the final output needs to be true widescreen and not with black bars added) but the resulting video on screen is blurry and bitty. I then tried capturing using the DV PAL 720 x 576 normal preset and the video is a little clearer on the screen (for both presets I have chosen lower field dominance) but when I play back it plays back in widescreen on the mac canvas window but at 4:3 on the camera's viewfinder.
I then assumed that maybe this is just becuase the mac screen (CRT by the way) doesn't use fields. So I exported the sequence as a QT movie using DV PAL 16:9 and used quicktime (OS9 Classic - my compressor has never worked because of the dreaded "unable to connect to baackground process" problem which I've never managed to correct) to convert it to MPEG2. When I import this as an asset into DVD Studio pro 4 and set the track size to 16:9 it comes through at the right aspect ratio. However it looks blurry on screen. Thinking that this will be fine on a TV I burned the disc - inserted it into my DVD player (a good one!) and watched it on my new 32" widescreen TV (a good one!) and the picture qualitty is poor. Its so much blurrier and bittier than the original footage looks when played through the camcorder's viewfinder!
The final footaage looks like an old VHS recording that's a year or two old!
Does anyone know how I can capture my footage in FCP with the maximum quality, edit it without quality loss and the export it for DVD again without such significant quality loss whilst all the time keeping it at proper 16:9 widescreen?
Is there some presets I should be working to?
I'm tearing my hair out! Help!

    Hi Guys,
    thanx for your replies.
    here's the latest:
Brian, I followed your instructions and the DVD burned successfully. However the video quality of the dvd when viewed on my TV ('ve tried on all 3 of my tvs now) is still a lot poorer than the quicktime movie that was imported into DVDSP4. When I play the original QT Movie on my Mac CRT monitor it looks a little blurry and grainy because I guess its non interlaced however when viewed on an external Video monitor it looks great - very sharp.
When I view the burned DVD on my television the picture quality looks like the non interlaced version of the original QT Movie that appeared on my Mac CRT and not the sharp interlaced (lower field) version that appeared on my external video monitor.
Its almost like taking a sharp jpeg into Photoshop and applying a gaussian blur of about 0.3 followed by jepg compression compressing it down to 5% quality!
I'm totally mystified. Can the conversion to Mpeg2 be removing all interlacing so that you get the less sharp computer monitor look? I just want the video on my final DVDs to be as good as the original source footage! I appreciate that along the way there might be loss of some quality but surely not that much?
Does this make sense to you guys or am I still doing something very wrong?
Robert: I have tried setting all manner of drives including a fresh external firewire HD with nothing on it (clean out of the box) but it doesn't seem to help.
Brian: I tried the no network suggestion a few months back but I'm not sure if I got it right. At the moment I have broadband through an external speedtouch usb modem and am also connected (occasionally although not for the last 3 months) via a crossover cable to my PCs ethernet card. When I last tried the No Network solution I had immense trouble getting my internet to work again! Can you please help me by directing me to the best ay to do this while protecting my internet settings?
any more help guys would be greatfully appreciated.

  • I keep getting error code 4450 when I'm trying to burn a CD from itunes.  It keeps my CD and won't eject it and says "cancelling burn" forever then itunes locks up and my cd is ruined and NO songs on it.

-I've slowed down the burn as slow as it can go
-I have bought 3 different brands of cd's

I have Windows 7 on a Dell.  Open and play iTunes in the compatability mode and use Windows XP (service pack 2).  Disregard any messsages to disable the compability mode.  This has worked for me.  I have also reinstalled iTunes and played with burn speeds etc.  These ideas did not work.  Compatability mode works.

  • Is there a way to Change the Writing Speed When Burning CD-R's?

Is there a way to change the writing speed when burning CD-R's?
I don't see any options in Disk Utility.
    Rob
P.S. Since I am burning coasters lately with the Pioneer DVR-111D, I though that I might solve the problem by using a lower write speed.

I dn't believe so with Disk Utility although you can with Roxio Toast Titanium. I would try another media brand, like Verbatim, as a first step and see if the coaster problem goes away.

  • How java is better from c++ in term of quality and maintenance ?

Java programming language is superior to C++ (in my opinion)
I have a presentation in few days where I need to point why to choose JAVA over C++ in order to make a better quality product which is also better to maintain.
Lets say you have 6 month to design and implement a project. Why would it be better in terms of quality and maintainability if I choose JAVA ?
    Please share your thoughts,
    Thanks
    Dan

Java and C# are both object oriented languages written the same language specification. They are true object oriented languages. Since they are written with the same language specification, there is no point in saying which is better Java or C# (although there are some differences). Therefore your comparision should be between C#/Java and C++. C++ is the C language with object oriented support strapped onto it.
I haven't used C++ in years but here's my opinon:
1: I suspect the bulk of web applicaitons and desktop applications today are written in C# or Java. Therefore you will have a hard time finding developers to support your project after the original designers leave.
2: C# and Java have frameworks that allow you to create applications using industry standards for design. I don't know if C++ have similiar framworks. If it does, I doubt they are as well developed.
3: Since C++ is built on C language, it allows the developers to revert back to procedural programming that they learned when they implemented projects in the C language. Since C# and Java are pure object oriented, it tends to force them to do things in an object oriented way rather procedural (of course, the determined programmer can do procedural with C# or Java if he is determined).
4: C++ syntax is butt ugly compared to C# and Java.
5: Since C++ is based on C language (non compiled language), you can probably do things a lot faster than C# or Java (compiled languages). However, the major issue with applicaitons today is not so much speed as its readability. Its estimated 80% of the cost of a project is maintaining it after its released. If you cant easily read it, you cant easily maintain it.

Has anyone had this issue. I created my song from itunes to garage band, took my iphotos to create a slide show and when I burned to idvd there are several pauses during playback?

    Hi
SlideShow in iDVD has a 99 photo limit - more than this and all sorts of error occures.
One can have more than one SlideShow on a DVD = X times 99 photos.
or assemble SlideShows in a movie editor (no limit at least not under 650 photos)
(only limit is Time in iDVD (movie time + MENU time --- 60 min or 120 min on SL-DVD and about twice on DL.-DVD )
    I use
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
As they will give a better quality than iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 can do.
