Quality of movies in Keynote TERRIBLE compared to QT

I have a movie file exported from FCP with no additional compression, a DV file, and I can play it full screeen on my 933 mHz iBook G4 and it looks fantastic, plays smoothly. The same file, when played as part of a Keynote presentation, shows fuzzy and pixelated text, especially white text on black background, poorer quality throughout, and sometimes stutters.
I know playing movies at high quality can be tricky, but why would Apple allow Keynote to be disabled so when they obviously have QT nailed?
It's frustrating to have a project that looks great in QT show so poorly when played through Keynote, when I need to present it this way.
Any thoughts?

kerry cox

well, this is just a guess, but when you run in the QT player at full screen, it's most likely switching your screen res into 640x480 when you do it. That means though the screen might be a little soft, the movie is not scaling at all (though it is being squished to look right at 640x480, as it's native res is 720x480)
Now switch to Keynote, and you're most likely running a 1024x768 slide show. You probably put the movie on a slide and scaled it to fit the slide. You run the show, and now it's running at 1024x768 with a 720x480 movie SCALED up to fill that. BIG DIFFERENCE.
There may be another reason, but this seems the most obvious to me.

  • Reduced Quality of QT movie from Keynote 8

My Full Quality QT movie exported from Keynote 8 is not as clear & clean (text especially) as the result I got from Keynote 6. I have to drop this movie into IMovie to add sound and then export to IDVD so I can burn an original that will go out for duplication on Monday. I really don't want to have to give up the transitions/actions I have added in K8 but it looks like I will have to if I want the text readable.
The Keynote "Full Quality" export settings seem to be the same for both 6 and 8, does anyone know why the quality is so off?
    Thanks...

  • How can I export a graphic slide with a quicktime movie from Keynote?

I export a title slide with a quicktime movie from Keynote to my desktop and it plays fine with audio. Once I insert or drag the clip into iWeb the resolution is degraded and very choppy. The resolution is 320x200 and I'm exporting from Keynote as a custom size (320x200) Frame rate: 29.97 Key Frames: Automatic Key Reordering is checked Data Rate: Automatic Quality: Multi pass. I need some help.

how large is the video and if you publish - does it still have the same horrible quality?
you might considering exporting as flash (loads faster) and integrating that into your iweb site using post-editing: http://karreth.com/index.php/articles/iframes-iweb/

  • Importing MPEG 4 Movie into Keynote 2

After spending 5 days trying to import MPEG 4 video from a Canon Optura 500 videocam, I have learned:
Can't be done. Calling Apple help today, confirmed no possible solution to get the movies into Keynote. I tried everything and read all help information in Keynote and imovie.
What I did for a do or die presentation: Import clip from camera (no editing allowed, as your edits will be lost on transfer) into imovie, copy and paste from imovie to keynote 2, copy and paste from Keynote 2 to POWERPOINT!
click on movie on a powerpoint slide and click view, click custom animation, click on your clip and click extras, pick play on click, and you can now play your MPEG4 movie in a slide show.
An apple rep once told me, in an Apple store, that "Keynote was Powerpoint on steroids". See how bad steroids are for you.

sigh...while Keynote is an amazing product, the Apple store workers tend to over hype it, to the point of making it sound like it has EVERy feature of PPT, when it's really missing a ton of stuff still. Visually though, I have to agree, it makes PPT look like a toy.
That said, I'm trying to figure out what exactly your process was, and what did and didn't work. I looked up the specs on the 500, and it appears that while you can shoot in true DV format onto mini DV tape, it also shoots Mpeg4 onto the photo card. Is this what you shot in (as opposed to DV format onto tape)? If so, I'm trying to figure out how you even got it into iMovie as opposed to iPhoto, which is what you use to import movies from a media card. Also, I don't understand your comment on edits getting lost.
Next, your use of the term slide show is confusing, but I THINK what you'd like is to see the movie sitting there on a poster frame until you want it to play, and then click to make it play. You can do this to an extent, but you have to work around a few missing features in Keynote. Keynote STILL won't let you leave the poster frame showing on the slide and then have the movie play on a click...you'll actually see NOTHING until you trigger the movie as you have to add a build to the movie, and until it builds, you won't see the thing. The work around is to grab a frame of the movie and paste it onto the slide, then build the movie in right on top of it.
I hope that helps. If you can give more details on what you did and what you TRIED to do, and what you want to end up with, I can try to help you figure it out.
EDIT: ah, I see this in a review "Playback of media from the card and the tape is available in playback mode, as is recording to a VCR or a digital video (DV) device using a FireWire cable." which means you "should" be able to import into iMovie. The real draw back is you're working with mpeg4 and not DV...and Mpeg4 is REALLY compressed, not a good format to use if you plan to edit it as you'll have to decompress and recompress, losing quality (DV is also compressed, but not nearly as much).

  • Why poor quality AIC & Apple ProRes HQ  when compared to original video files!

First, I'm a long time PC user who has recently switched to Mac's and I'm rather picky about the quality of my videos.
Problem: I have HD video from a Canon HF S10 camcorder and Canon EOS 7D that looks fantastic on a PC... but looks very so-so once imported into a iMovie or FCE or FCP. I've tried all three programs using AIC and yes I've even tried Apple Pro Res HQ and still end up with very poor quality mov files when compared to the originals. Part of the problem (or benefit of a PC) is that the PC actually plays the original RAW MTS/M2TS/MOV files without any trouble and and they look unbelievable. Where as my Mac has to import/convert the file to AIC or Apple Pro Res HQ... so no matter what codec I use, my Mac produces video that is not even close to what I get out of my PC. My original RAW files are all 1920x1080 60i and are MTS files from the HF S10 and Mov files from the 7D. Even the original RAW Mov files produced from the 7D don't look as good on my Mac as they do on my PC. I even took a SD card with the original files down to the local Apple store to see how they look on a Macbook Pro and they still don't look like the originals on my PC. Also, all my comparisons are being done side by side on two 24" Apple cinema displays that are calibrated. Any ideas as to why the quality is just so-so when compared to the originals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you're working in Final Cut Pro you should try that forum. What version of the software are you using? The AVCHD media should be ingested using log and transfer. The 7D media should be converted using Compressor. You don' need HQ, ProRes is sufficient. How are you monitoring the video? Are full size on a video monitor? All this should be explained on the FCP forum. FCE does not work with ProRes in any form.

  • Broadcast quality uncompressed video to Keynote solution???

    World,
I would be really grateful if someone would help. I've done a lot of searching and cant find a definitive answer. I am looking to design a solution for generating the best quality video output through Keynote.
I am used to making slide presentations using Powerpoint/Keynote, with video output from an alternate device. My objective is to output highest quality video of around 5-6 minutes.
Most projectors are 1024x768. (Although I understand many projectors now are WXGA at 1280x800).
If I have a budget I use a professional operator and request SPBeta or a DigiSP, Pal player. In most cases however there is no money to spend and so I use a DVD player. In both cases the video is of course 720x576 (Pal).
I have the video source files as uncompressed broadcast quality, captured with various codecs, eg "Blackmagic 10 Bit, Integer (Big Endian)".
What I want to understand is whether I can compress the video files and run it through Keynote in a way that will not compromise the quality.
    1. What quality is achievable?
Using a MacbookPro for output, what quality is achievable, when compared to what I am am familiar with from a) DVD and b) broadcast quality player? Assuming the same decent quality XGA projector.
When I first looked at this some years ago, there were some resolution conflicts using slides and video in Powerpoint.
But it seems to me that things have moved on and I should be able to get a comparable quality video image from the Mac, as compared to using a player. Better even (???). Good as DVD?? Good as a broadcast quality player?? Is this correct?
One of the issues that may have some impact (the impact of which I don't fully grasp) is that normally a video projector will require a change of the input "source" setting from "data" to "video" for the different outputs which presumably changes the resolution from 1024x768 to 720x576. Depending on the "source" setting.
Whereas with the solution I am seeking to plan here, I am channelling a 720x576 resolution video (however it may be compressed) into Keynote, which is outputting it at 1024x768 (to match the data/slides output resolution). That sounds really problematic and a quality killer to me. But perhaps Keynote does this well (???). Perhaps there is a conversation tactic that I can adopt to solve any issues.
So, then, which if any compression should I use, what compression format etc? I don't care about cost (give or take a few hundred) or hard disc space. I am looking to design the best solution. Using a MacbookPro as engine. I am not looking for a solution that will work "OK" or look "pretty good". I am looking to design the best solution to get the best output of the video.
But really I suppose I am trying to understand whether it is time to definitively get rid of the DVD player because I should be able to achieve that quality, definitely, as a minimum ????).
This seems like one of those things that is really easy if you're working in the space all the time. But hard to work out if you're coming at it from the purely "technical research" angle, as I have been.
Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!
    Stephen

    What is your source material?
Remember that the Hollywood films are mostly shot on film at 24 fps. The film is then scanned in at an amazingly high resolution. The online H.264 files are compressed from that and at 24 fps.
Let's compare that to DV, for example. Not only are you starting with far fewer pixels, you're working with 60 interlaced fields. That often gets turned into 30 frames per second for the online file.
So you've got two problems here: 1) Fields combining won't be as good looking as starting with a progressive format and 2) by having 30 fps instead of 24 fps you're going to have a larger file size even with the same settings!
Ok, so maybe you're working with HD video. You're better off, but it's still not even close to the same resolution. And unless you're working with some kind of 24p format that you've properly converted, you're still dealing with 30 fps. (Many 24p modes on cameras are actually recorded at 30 fps, and have to be properly converted later.)
I don't know if any of these things apply to you or not, but hopefully it's given you some clues. The bottom line is, this IS a "garbage in/garbage out" situation, even though your video is not "garbage." It just means that you're fighting an uphill battle here by comparing yourself to something that started at a much higher resolution to begin with. That makes a difference, even when everything is shrunk down to the same size in the end. (And that 24 vs. 30 fps thing is a big thing too.)

  • Animated GIFs don't loop in exported movies from Keynote 3

I am just getting started with Keynote 3.0 and really like what I have seen. I created a series of slides and pasted animated GIFs in various places. They are set to loop on each slide as Keynote presents the slides. The slide show has preset transition and build timings and there is music playing continuously, throughout the show. It works quite well. (However, there is very intermittent choppy audio and video playback when there are builds or transitions occurring. Any thoughts on optimizing this?)
The problems begin when I ask Keynote to export the slideshow to a movie. The main problem that I am struggling with is that the animated GIFs don't loop in the rendered movie, regardless of which compressor I choose. I don't see anything in the documentation. I have also searched several of the discussions on making movies from Keynote 3 but have not specifically seen animated GIFs discussed. What am I missing here?
Also, I want to be able to play this movie on a DVD player at an upcoming function. Any recommendations for an approach that will be best? I have QT 7 Pro and the iLife '06 suite.
Thanks, in advance, for any forthcoming suggestions.
    eMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25 GHz, 1 GB RAM

My guess is, it's too much of a pain to have to calculate how many times it will actually loop and create the loops and then composite everything. Running it in Keynote just tells the thing to keep playing over and over till you do something that stops it. There's a BIG difference there as one is just being told to play, the other is having to be placed in a movie with an exact number of frames, so there are a bunch of calculations involved.

  • Looping part of a QT movie in keynote

Hi, I want to be able to have a movie in keynote that plays the whole movie and once it reaches the end it jumps back to a certin point in the movie (not the begining) and plays that part over and over till i change the slide, so the effect is, for example, a movie shows a title or something coming in, and then loops from the end back to a point after the title comes in to keep a little movement going on the title instead of stopping all together.
    any ideas?
    Thanks!

I run into similar problems with music. You can't really make it jump back to a certain point. What you can do is copy the movie editing out the beginning portion that you don't want to be replayed. You have to add this to a second slide and have the movie play once automatically go to the next slide and then have the edited movie automatically start and loop. This isn't the sexiest way to make it happen but it will work. You then just click to the next slide when you are ready.
    Hope that this helps.

  • Exporting a QuickTime movie in Keynote '09

    Hello,
I am trying to create a quick time movie from Keynote.
I have a five minute audio file sound track to which I have selected 28 Slides.
When I first exported, I hear the audio, but the video does not advance.
I have considered using "Fixed Timing" but it looks like you are then forced to set uniform slide display duration and uniform transition duration. However, my slides have a variety of display-durations, and transition-durations. (All the advances are automatic, not manual.)
Please help me create a movie that actually reflects the original Keynote show as created, and tweaked.

You need to record your slideshow so you can export with the recorded timing. Go to the Play Menu then Record Slideshow. This will run through your slideshow and record when the transitions take place. Then when you export you can select Recorded Timing.
Since you have a soundtrack, you will want to make sure under the audio section to select Include the slideshow soundtrack, but uncheck Include the slideshow recording.
I should add that there have been many people here that have had problems with the timing getting off a little in the Quicktime file. So if you need the timing to be exact, you might want to export without the audio then add to iMovie where you can work with the audio and video a little more.

The maximum duration available for an automatic presentation in Keynote is 600 seconds.
