Query about best way to rebuild an iMac

I have a 3.06Ghz 24" 2007 iMac which has been running particularly slowly over recent months. It also crashes/freezes about 4 or 5 times a week which is particularly frustrating. I have tried a number of things to fix it (mostly fiddling about with the software - disabling, removal, reinstallation etc) but to no avail.
Anyway, this post is about my next steps. I'm thinking that I should rebuild the system (thought I left that behind when I switched ) and wondered what the current thinking about that is. I have a Time Machine which has the system backed up and I also thought of imaging the hard drive in its current state on an external drive so that I can boot from it if needs be and as a minimum, attach it to copy over 'old' files.
Using the Migration Assistant I can rebuild the system in more than one way
1. Total rebuild - doesn't sound like a good idea as I'll be back where I started
2. Apps + Users - also not so good since that might reinstate some application weirdness?
3. Users - sounds safe (ish).
So I need to trade off effort involved vs confidence in a rebuilt system, but I'm not that familar with the details of how all this works to make that decision. Any well informed pointers or advice?
Thanks in advance...

you've reinstalled OS X, and tried testing in a new user account w/o any speed improvement ?
Verified/repaired the disk after booting from the install dvd ?
run the apple hardware test (just in case) ?
anything useful in the kernel panic (?) logs
Think I'd try it out first after an erase/install, then move onto Users.

  • I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?

I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?
    Facts:
In moving to a new iMac, I copied the iPhoto library to an external HDD assuming that I would point the new iMac to the backed up iPhoto Library
All worked fine when I pointed the new library but noticed that some folders contained aliases and not the original file. So when I attempt to open that photo it can't find it because the alias is pointing to another drive.
I do have all original photos from a couple of external HDDs. In the folders titled, "Originals" (from older versions of iPhoto) and "Masters" (from current iPhoto)
I'm thinking I can create a new folder and drop the original files and make that my new iPhoto library. Is there a better way to rebuild my library? I do not want to create any future aliases.
Thanks in advance for any help!

do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting
You must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure of content of the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it  --  and you can not rebuild yoru librtary - only iPhoto ir iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a library unless you are a SQL programmer and understand the structure that iPhoto uses

  • For optimal sound, what is the best way to connect an iMac to a high end stereo system?

If the answer is wired rather than through an Airport Express, what is the best way to wire an iMac to a good stereo? Is there any way to do it other than through the headphones out jack?

    Morning Acousticare,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Thunderbolt cables should not exceed three meters for maximum performance. The Apple Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2.0 m) is two meters in length.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

  • Which is best way to back an iMac?

Which is best way to back an iMac? I have lots of photos and videos on my iMac TIme Capsule or hard drive. I would like to take photos and videos off my iMac but would easy access to them.

CCC stores a "base image", then its incremental backups are stores in separate folders that you would have to search for specific files.  If different files were "last changed" on different days, you may have to search different days "incremental folders" to get all files.
Because of this CCC is "managed" ... you cannot fully control how backups are made or where files are stored.  And TimeMachine eventually deletes "incremental folders" as they get too old, so it is "managed" as well.
If you have full sets of files you want saved "as a specificslly formatted set", I would do it in another eternal drive that *I* manage as a set of folders.
This is totally 100% incorrect. What you described here is more or less Time Machine, not CCC.  CCC is a standard backup program.  It does not, I repeat, NOT, create incremental dated backups.  While you can save what gets replaced by date archived directories that is not the intent of CCC.  It's intent is to have a exact disk image, folder-for-folder, file-for-file, of the source.  Under option it just stuffs the files it replaces in a folder.
And you switch what your are taking about halfway through your post to TM.

  • HT5304 what is the best way to connect my imac wireless with airport express or directly plugged into airport unit

what is the best way to connect my imac to internet via airport express. wireless or ethernet plug to airport? thanks

    Hello quinstar,
It sounds like you would like to use either your Personal HotSpot to AirPrint from your MacBook Pro or use an Airport to do so without internet access to the home. According to the following Featured Discussion you very well may be able to use AirPrint with Personal HotSpot:
HT4356 Can I use personal hotspot as wifi to connect printer?
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4007254
Also, the Airport products to not need an active internet connection to set up a home Wi-Fi connection so that is another option as well.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Best way to have an iMac second monitor and Thunderbolt daisy chain?

I'm getting new iMacs for my school lab & wish to daisy chain with Thunderbolt cables into pods of 6 for backing up. I also want to run a second monitor with each iMac. What is the best way to do this since both Thunderbolt ports will be used? USB 3.0 to HDMI?

    Canadian Tech Teacher wrote:
By "pods" I had meant creating little LAN's of 6 computers connected to a Thunderbolt drive but I've been doing a lot of reading and now I'm wondering about whether that can actually be done?
The only Mac to Mac connections that Thunderbolt supports that I know of are target disk mode & target display mode, neither of which supports a daisy chain topology or is suitable for a multi-host LAN. (Only one Mac can be the host in either of these modes.)
However, if you want to crete six computer LANs for backups, you could use traditional Ethernet or WiFi LANs & (for instance) a large NAS drive array, or Airport Extreme Base Stations with one or more USB drives attached to them. You could also use Time Capsules, but that is more expensive than going with AEBS's & attached drives. Obviously, wired LAN's would be more suitable for multiple "pods" of six Macs, both because of better reliability & elimination of WiFi channel contention that would show down wireless throughput.
Of course, this isn't as fast as a Thunderbolt drive connected directly to a Mac, but the only way I know of to do that is by connecting to one Mac at a time, which probably would negate any backup copying speed advantage.
Thunderbolt drives (& cables) are expensive so their use is really only justified where very high speed data transfers are necessary. If you don't need that, you might consider a simpler solution of one (or for redundancy two) USB 3.0 drives per iMac, since they are relatively cheap & still offer high speed data transfers.

  • Whats the best way to clean an imac?

Hi, I've had my iMac for about five years, the white 20-inch iMac. I've noticed some flickring on the screen when I change window; looks like static for just a mili-second on screen. Also, sometimes I see dots and lines in the dropshadow of active windows... I've heard this is due to dust in the fan. What would be the best way of cleaning it out?

Could also just be an accumulation of dust on the botton grill work and small air intake behind the stand that is causing the iMac and graphics to run hot.
Every few months I shut down (stopping the fans) and vigorously vacuum the bottom grill work and small intake of my 2006 Early Core Duo to keep it running cool.
Check your current tempuratures with iStat Pro, vacuum the air intakes and check again. Apple - Downloads - Dashboard Widgets - iStat Pro
Unfortunatly if however the Graphic's chip is damaged from repeated overheating, then really the only fix is a very expensive repair or a new iMac.

  • What's the best way to ship an iMac

    Hello,
I'm going to be selling my iMac.  I do not have the original box.  What is the best way to ship it?  Specifically, what kind of box, should I use bubble wrap, etc?

I just went through this and thought I'd add to this thread. An earlier post suggested going to an Apple Store and having them pack it. This did not work for me. When I called my Apple Store (Lenox in Atlanta) they first said that they had just gotten rid of all their boxes but to call back in two days. When I did that, they HUNG UP on me when I asked if they could pack my computer! I called Apple phone support to ask whether the bit posted on the online support community, about Apple Stores packing computers, was wrong. They said it depends on the store. So I called the Atlanta Perimeter location, and they were very helpful. They would have been happy to get a box for me, but my iMac is six months old so the new boxes would not fit my iMac. I ended up going to UPS to have it boxed. It cost about $25. So, if your computer is new (exact same size as new ones), I recommend calling an Apple Store but there is no guarantee they will listen to your question (in Altanta, Perimeter store = very helpful, Lenox store = hangup). If that fails, go to UPS.

  • Best way to rebuild all the indexes in a schema

    Hi,
    DB : 9.2.0.7 (TEST Instance)
    OS : HP-UX Itanium 11.23
we have TEST schema which contains 1960 Tables and 1800 Indexes.
we have requirement to rebuild all those indexes.
what is the best way to do this task?
Note: This TEST schema was created and imported with PROD schema of Production ( Schema wise import)

Sybrand has a very valid point, rebuild for what purpose? If it is performance you are likely wasting most of your effort thought there are cases where an index rebuild will help performance of specific queries though sometimes what you gain on a select may be paid for on an insert due to the rebuild resulting in splitting being required to support the insert.
If the hope is for performance before rebuilding the indexes update the statistics.
If you must rebuild the easiest way to to generate alter index owner.index_name rebuild commands via SQL and spool these to a file perhaps on a per tablespace basis. The you check the amount of space available in the tablespace to see if if will support rebuilding in place. If yes, great, just add a few commands to the script to echo the commands, show the timing, spool the results, etc.... If not, then you need to generate drop and re-create DDL for those indexes that cannot be rebuilt in an attempt to create the space necessary for the remaining indexes to use rebuilds.

  • Question about best way to build page

I built a site by first designing it in Photoshop and then
slicing it up, leaving an area for the main text for each
individual page. I then brought the html and images into
Dreamweaver and built a template, making an editable region in the
table cell where the main text for each page will go. Here's a
screenshot to give you a better idea...
    Screenshot
Originally I set it up so that the editable region had a
scroll bar to accomodate the amount of text for the page (I used
overflow set to auto in the CSS). The problem is, the client
doesn't want scrollbars and wants the page to dynamically expand
vertically based on the amount of text for the page (with the
woman's picture top aligned with the text and her bio link under
the nav bar, and the 2 magazine photos along with her blurb and
copyright pushed down to the bottom below the main text).
If I don't use scrollbars and try to put more text than will
fit into the cell of the editable region, it breaks the table and
the nav bar gets all screwed up and looks like this...
    Screenshot
    2
I'm at a loss, how can I set this up so the page will
dynamically expand vertically with the text? Any suggestions? Is a
table not the way to go? What's the best way of doing it?
I'm open to anything at this point, I've been trying things
on my own for hours with no results, any help is appreciated,
    thanks!

Its quite simple to recreate directly from within
    Dreamweaver. Below is
the main html/css structure you require. Just a simple two
    column, one
row table will do the job. Cut code below, paste into a new
    Dreamweaver
document....add content and tweak a bit.

  • Best Way to Video Chat iMac-to- PC

What is the best way to video chat between my wife's iMac and her mom's Vista PC? I was going to use Windows Live on the PC and Messenger on the iMac, but after installing Messenger and setting up a personal account, discovered that Messenger for Mac with a personal account does not support video; IM only! Crap. So, before I start installing other applications on either computer, and setting up accounts all over the place, I am hoping for some solid advice on the best way to go. My preference is to install the least applications on either computer, so anything we can do with what's already there is preferred.
Option 1 is to use Windows Live on the PC (it's ready to go) and put something on the iMac that will work with that. But, I can't find anything that will.
Option 2 is use iChat on the iMac, and install something on the PC. What works? What is best?
Option 3 is install Skype on both. Looks like that will work, but will it??
    Thanks!!

iChat can use a GoogleMail ID as a an Jabber ID in iChat and then it will Video chat to other iChat users that are also using a GoogleMail ID.
iChat uses just one set of Video and Audio codecs whether you are starting from the AIM Buddy List (the ones that login to the AIM server even if the Screen Name is from Apple) or a Jabber one or the Bonjour one.
Jabber servers on the whole (if they are doing Video and Audio) are using their own codecs called Jingle.
GoogleMail Video form their web page does something different in that it uses Flash to control your Camera and mic via the Web Browser.
It appears that this will however connect to PC users using the GoogleTalk App.
The TokBox site allows you to at least link your current MSN, Yahoo, AIM or Jabber IDs (Shows you separate Buddy Lists) and uses Flash like the GoogleMail web page.
I have not used it enough to see if it will Video form the Web Page to an App or if the other person also has to use a Web Browser.

Hi all right I am wanting to connect to my Imac at home which is connected to the internet via my Macbook which could be any where in the World but is still connected to the internet which is the best way to get access to the HD to I can use the Itunes library on the Imac on my Macbook , Look at Files and Copy and Edit files on Imac ?
could you also try and provide me with a link to a tutorial ?

There is a built-in utility, which requires a subscription to MobileMe, called 'Back to my Mac'. It's had its ups and downs, but there are also other products which could produce more stable results like gotomypc
I would still recommend the Back to my Mac via MobileMe subscription.

  • Best way to prepare an iMac for sale?

I have a 2007 24" iMac I would like to sell. I had upgraded it to 4 GB of RAM and it is running Mavericks. I would like to offer it with Mavericks installed. What's the best way to "reset it all" so my stuff is all cleared out, and the new owner will be able to go through setup and set their own username and settings?

see What to do before selling or giving away your Mac - Support - Apple
However you will not be able to sell it with Mavericks you will have to install the original OS (or the last OS you bought on DVDs).
The license for the App Store versions of Apple software does not allow you to transfer it. It is tied to your Apple ID and for the new user to use it (even if it was legal to transfer it) you would have to give them you Apple account.

  • Best way to ship an imac

I'm relocating, and need to ship my imac. I have the original box. I can put it in there, and pack it nicely. Question is - what is the best way to ship it? USPS, FEDEX, or others? Thanks!

Depends on where you are located and where you are shipping to.
If you're in the states and shipping within the states then any of the major carriers will work, use what is convenient and compare prices. Just make sure you get a tracking number and insure it.
If you're overseas or shipping overseers that changes things some.

  • Best way to network an imac with an ibook

I was hoping someone could recommend the best way to network my G4 imac with my wife's ibook laptop. I want us to be able to share drives (internal and extrernal), internet, and a printer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!

I'm assuming you don't have the Airport Base Station yet? That's pretty much the most convenient way I know of, as mere file sharing makes it pretty tricky, if not impossible, to get access to external volumes mounted on, say, your G4. Caveat: only a USB-capable external HD can be hooked up to the base station.
