Question about Events stored on an external drive

Hello guys! I recently freed up a TON of space on my iMac by adding an external hard drive and you guys advised me on how to get iMovie '08 to store my Events there.
Question: I'm going to Rome Italy tomorrow and I'm going to be doing a ton of video footage. My Macbook doesn't have the hard drive space to hold what I'm going to be shooting.
So, my question is......considering that I'm using this external drive to store Events from my iMac will I be able to to use that same external drive on this trip to manage Events on my MacBook?
In other words, I just want to make sure that I don't confuse either version of iMovie that I have operating on these two different machines. Can I use this same external hard drive to manage Events from both machines?
Thanks in advance for the speedy assistance. I'm leaving tomorrow and need to get this issue nailed down.
Thanks!
Tony

I actually have no set-up to test my speculations but...:
when you tell iM08 to store Events on some ext. drive, it creates on 'Top Level' of that drive the 'iMovie Events' folder..
so, when you do that with a second Mac/iMovie... I guess, it will confuse the file management.. (=you can not create two indentically named folders... ) ... and, I guess, you can not create/select a sub-folder for the Events...
best practise would be to partition the drive.. but that isn't possible without erasing any content on your drive..
Plan B) invest 100$ for a 2nd drive.. ? (last week offer: 79€ for 500 gigs.. no bad... )

  • Question about Formatting Buffalo USB 1TB external drive for use with Mac Book Pro Mountain Lion HD

    Hi there, Have Mountain Lion HD operating system (not sure if it is 10.8 or 10.8.1. or 10.8.2)  and have a Buffalo USB 3.0 1TB hard drive. When go to utilities to try and format with Mac OS extended, following 3 files show. DriveNavi. exe, Slm.exe and Mac. The option to left click and erase menu is not there. Or at least not as shown in all the help videos.
    It is USB connection so will take ages but want to use drive to store video footage and also partition to back up Time Machine. ( travelling in South America and no other Ext Drive option available too buy) how much space should i assign to Time Machine when partitioning?  Is there anything else i need to think about? as new to formatting. Any thing else i can do to make process of transfering footage to Buffalo quicker?
    Final question is if it is finally reformatted am i going to have to spend so long accessing footage from hard drive when back home and editing that it really is not worth if, and i should just write this off as an inappropriate purchase, and try and buy more memory cards and not bother with transfering/storing? Thanks in advance for time spent trying to assist.

    Use Apple's Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder to format the drive.
    The programs on the drive given to you by the manufacturer is likely backup software (or malware) and essentially worthless, it will be wiped when you format the drive.
    I do NOT advise you partition that drive for TimeMachine, rather I advise you not to use TimeMachine at all for your purposes because TM is just a backup, not a bootable drive.
    Rather do this.
    Get another hard drive that is equal to or slightly larger than your boot drive.
    Format the drive in Disk Utiltiy > 1 Partition, option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended journaled, click Erase and move the slider one spot to the right and click Erase. This will take some time as it's going to map off any failing sectors it can BEFORE you lay data on the drive corrupting it.
    Next, pay for and download Carbon Copy Cloner, use the default settings and simply clone internal drive to the external drive. this will also take some time the first time.
    Next use Disk Utility to Repair Permisisons on both drive. Now reboot the machine and hold the option key down, you can select the external drive clone to boot from!!
    You can update the clone the same way by using CCC, but it doesn't take as long, only copying changes.
    This is better than TimeMachine as a bootable clone is bootable in case your internal drive fails to boot the machine.
    Use the first drive for storage and be very gentle with it while it running, like you should do for all hard drives as they are subjective to shock damage.
    The objective with the clone drive is you keep it safe, and not carting it around where it can be more subjective to damage like the other drive will be.
    Remmeber you need 2 forms of hardware backup at all times.

  • Question about the format of an external drive.....

    Ok quick question...
    my external is formatted mac OS extended journaled. I need to create a new partition in FAT so that it can be read when I use bootcamp. However when I use disk utility to create a partition it says it would have to format the whole harddrive and I'd lose what is currently on there..
    Is there anyway that I can do this without losing what I currently have on there?
    I only need to have about 50 gigs read/writeable in windows running on bootcamp.

    You might want to try out MacDrive, which will allow Mac OS formatted drives to be read from and written to in Windows. That could save you having to repartition your external drive completely. There's a five-day free trial available so you could try it out first.

  • Question about moving itunes to wd external drive?

    i found the page where it says u can move itunes music to external drive but will that include my tv shows also and if so can i delete it from my laptop after i move it to other drive?

    \Music\iTunes\ folder is the main iTunes library location. It contains the library files, music files and everything else.
    I have all of my music files already stored on an external HD. But for some reason when i moved it all
    What exactly does "moved it all" mean? What did you move?
    in other words in the old drive I still have the following files:
    itunes library genius
    -itunes library extras
    -itunes library
    These three are all the same type of files. I don't know what type of files they are
    The iTunes library.itl file is the iTunes database file. Without that, iTunes is empty.
    Since i already have all of my music files on my ext. HD can I delete these files without messing anything up?
    Only if you want iTunes to be completely empty and you want to start from scratch.
    Moving the music file syourself is not the correct way to do it. iTunes will lose everything.
    If you want to move everything, copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder to a new location.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
    Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes library.itl file in the iTunes folder you moved.

  • Question about Time Machine backup on external drive containing photos

    I have a Le Cie external hard drive with iPhoto '08 photos on it.  I bought the drive when I started running out of room on my early 2008 iMac and moved a bunch of iphoto pictures and imovie movies onto it.  Can I use this same external drive to run Time Machine backups?  Or would that risk losing the photos that are already on the external drive??  Can an external drive be used for both photo storage and Time Machine backups?
    Ultimately, my goal is to update to iPhoto '11, but I would like to have all my photos backed up first in case it doesn't go well.
    Thanks!

    Yes. You can back up your internal the external drives to the TM drive.
    Here is a site that has probably all the info you will need for using and troubleshooting TM. Bookmark this to read and for future reference.

  • External HDS/HLS storage: Invoking files stored on an external drive.

    Followed the following article to add an external drive to store our vod streams (article is no longer available):
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flashmediaserver/devguide/WS0432746db30523c21e63e3d12eea2a8fc0 -8000.html#WS0432746db30523c21e63e3d12eea2a8fc0-7ffd
    FMS 4.5 Streaming HDS from non default location
    Connected an external hard drive to the server with the following folders on it (vod2 > media), so the path is:  G:\vod2\media. New video files are inside the last folder (media).
    1. Modified: rootinstall/conf/fms.ini: added a new parameter for HTTP and RTMP streaming: VOD_COMMON_DIR_2 = G:\vod2\media
    2. Modified: rootinstall/applications/vod/Application.xml: Added <StreamManager><VirtualDirectory><Streams>/vod2;${VOD_COMMON_DIR_2}</Streams>
    3. Modified HLS and HDS content storage in httpd.conf (copied and pasted under original settings): The location names are /hls-vod2 and /hds-vod2, correct?
    <Location /hls-vod2>
        HLSHttpStreamingEnabled true
        HLSMediaFileDuration 8000
        HttpStreamingContentPath "G:\vod2\media"
    </Location>
    <Location /hds-vod2>
        HttpStreamingJITPEnabled true
        HttpStreamingContentPath "G:\vod2\media"
        HttpStreamingJITConfAllowed true
        JitFmsDirPath ".."
        Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks
    </Location>
    If all of the above modifications are correct, what is the correct url to invoke the hds streams stored on this external drive through rtmp? The original instructions were not consistently clear about this. I have a file called 1.Test.mov in that folder. I've tried:
    rtmp://localhost/hds-vod2/mp4:1.Test.mov
    rtmp://localhost/hds-vod2/1.Test.mov
    rtmp://localhost/hds-vod2/1.Test.mov.f4m
    etc.
    http://localhost/hls-vod2/1.Test.mov.m3u8 Works for HLS
    http://localhost/hds-vod2/1.Test.mov.f4m Works too.
    I need the rtmp url so that I can make a .smil file for rtmp fallback, such as:
    smil>
      <head>
      <meta base="rtmp://localhost/hls-vod2/"/>
      </head>
      <body>
      <switch>
                <video src="mp4:1.Test_1500kbps.mov" system-bitrate="1500000" width="1920" height="1080" />
                <video src="mp4:1.Test_1200kbps.mov" system-bitrate="1500000" width="1920" height="1080" />
               <video src="mp4:1.Test_800kbps.mov" system-bitrate="1500000" width="1920" height="1080" />
      </switch>
        </body>
    </smil>
    Thanks

    All of Adobe's documentation says that files specified in the vod_common_dir can be streamed from both http and rtmp, but there is no specific mention of what the correct rtmp URL is for files stored on an additional hard drive. Here's what I did to get around this: FMS 3.5 can't connect to media on other drive
    1. HLS streaming:
        a. Modified: rootinstall/conf/fms.ini: added a new parameter for HTTP and RTMP streaming: VOD_COMMON_DIR_2 = G:\vod2\media
        b. Modified: rootinstall/applications/vod/Application.xml: Added <StreamManager><VirtualDirectory><Streams>/vod2;${VOD_COMMON_DIR_2}</Streams>
    2. RTMP streaming: Added the file path of the external storage in the virtual directory of the Application.xml file without specifying or naming the application.
        a. <Streams>/;G:\vod2\media</Streams>
        b. The rtmp for this follows the starndard URL convention: URL Syntax: [protocol]://[servername]/[application]/[codecID:][streamname][.extension]
        c. In my case, this would be: rtmp://localhost/vod/mp4:1.Test.mov
    It would be nice if this worked according to Adobe's documentation, and hopefully someone can chime in with the correct answer to the original question. If not, this gets rtmp and http streaming to work from the same external location (what vod_common_dir is supposed to be able to do).
    Thanks

    My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

    If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
    Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
    To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

  • Using software instruments that are stored on an external drive.

    I recently bought Logic 9. Doing a custom install, I stored the instrument library on an external disk thinking it would be easy to use the instruments at a later time. Now, however, when I create a software instrument track, I only see the basic exs instruments. I can't find any further help on how to use my full library of instruments stored on my external drive. This must be simple, but I can't figure out. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Logic looks at the Garageband library for these.
    You'll need to go in there and create an alias to where you've put your content, otherwise they won't show up in the Garageband instruments section.

  • Moving library stored on an external drive to another computer - Help!

    I am currently changing computers. Both are running Windows XP, both are running iTunes 8.0.2.20
    On the current computer I have all my music stored on an external drive named L:. I am going to move L: to the new computer and keep it named the same. I have exported my library on the first computer. Here is where I want to make sure I have it right, when I import the library on the new computer, since it will be reading from the same drive name, do I need to change anything else to make sure this goes smoothly?
    I find lots of instructions out there for moving from C: to C:, but can't find anything for a set up like I have.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sean

    Or:
    Copy the iTunes folder from the old computer to the same location in your user area on the new one.  Attach the external drive and start iTunes.  If you have put it in your Home > Music folder the application will automatically know to look for it there and becausse you are using the same library it will be configured to look for media on the external drive.

  • Linking Soundtrack Pro to audio files stored on an external drive

    FCP user but using SP for the first time. I have the large sized audio files stored on an external drive which at the moment I can't access from within SP. Just wondering the best way to link to the audio files?

    I actually use the 'save as' function that consolidates all the audio clips and move them onto a separate drive. I'm doing a lot of large projects that have more clips than are actually used. Consolidation means I can move and work on another machine. And in the end it's easier to archive this single directory of files. Works for me, especially because sometimes the audio sources are scattered in too many places on my system.

  • Want to use a new laptop to access my music stored on an external drive

    I have my music stored on an external drive and access it through my old laptop. I have a new laptop and have loaded iTunes, my songs appear, but I seem not to be able to replicate all my playlists even though the new laptop is accessing the same external drive. What's wrong?

  • Question about backing up to an external hard drive and then restoring

    I want to back up my iPhone to an external hard drive rather than to CDs/DVDs, and it isn't an option under "Backup." I thought this could be done by consolidating the iTunes library and then copying the entire iTunes folder to the hard drive. But now I've read some things that make me not so sure. Can this be done? And if so, how do I restore everything if need be? I want to have a way to backup/restore in the case of having to reformat the hard drive or if I switch to using another computer. I am using a Windows computer.

    Your iPhone's backup, which is created and maintained by iTunes stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos available in your iPhone's camera roll (you shouldn't depend on your iPhone's backup alone for these photos, which should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera), and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app.
    It isn't necessary to backup your iPhone's backup. You can manually update your iPhone's backup at any time without syncing, and the same when connecting your iPhone with iTunes on another computer. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, control-click on your iPhone and at the menu window that appears, select Back Up.
    Maintaining a backup of your iTunes library is much more important - copying the entire iTunes named folder to an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes.
    Since the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer for contact info and calendar events, you should maintain a backup of the supported application on your computer for this data. Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone are not included with your iPhone's backup, so these photos should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data.
    When syncing an iPhone with iTunes on another computer, only iTunes content on the iPhone will be erased first, not all data on your iPhone such as contact info and calendar events. When selecting photos to be transferred to your iPhone from another computer, all photos available on your iPhone that were transferred from another computer will be erased first. If you don't select to sync contact info and calendar events with a supported application on another computer, contact info and calendar events on your iPhone will not be touched.
