Question about HTTP Server and 9iAS

I am kind of new to Oracles 9is products. I installed Oracle 9i Rel. 2 recently and it installed HTTP Server and other stuff as part of that install. I am trying to write a small web application. Is this install good enough to do basic servlet's, jsp's and may be EJB's etc ... or do I need to install 9iAS. I am confused on the fact that I know 9iAS will give me j2ee container, web container, clustering, etc ..., what functionality is included in the 9i databases web server piece.
Also, can anyone point me to a good documentation that explains directory structure of 9i Rel. 2. I am familiar with the database part fairly well(oracle 7 release). However, I am confused as to new web related stuff (Apache, bc4j, etc..) in 9i Rel. 2.
Thanks.

Hi,
No, you cannot run EJB's in the Apache installation. For that you might want to download OC4J.
Basic Http pages and Servlets can run but I dont think it is advisable to use it for that. For any kind of development, I would suggest you to use OC4J.
Oracle9i Database is web enabled and you can access the table, etc.. from a browser too. This is the reason Apache is provided with the basic installation. Oracle9i Rel 2 has XML DB in it which again can be accessed from the Web.
For more help on any of these check http://otn.oracle.com/documentation/oracle9i.html
You will be able to get all the related Developer's Guide here.
Hope this helps,

  • Splitting HTTP Server and 9IAS

Whats the advantage of splitting the HTTP Server and application server. Bcos in our case the web server is installed thro a minimal installation and the Application server is installed using the enterprise edition in separate servers. Hence in both the servers the HTTP service is enabled . Also the Jserver of web server is not being used by us.
It would be helpful if somebody could list out the various advantages / disadvantages with the above architecture.
    Thanks and Regards

Question is probably best answered on the general 9iAS forum:
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jsp?id=466592
A quick answer: Reasons vary from distributing load (HTTP hits or application execute), using distribution of HTTP servers for high availability via new clustering capabilities in 9iAS, using different size boxes for one piece or another (e.g. big cluster of tiny HTTP servers and a smaller number of larger servers for EJB), utilizing hardware, physically and logically splitting apart functionality of 9iAS (not such an issue with just the core but more significant with Forms, Reports, Portal, etc).
This paper gives the feature set supporting distributed deployment:
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/ias/ohs/collateral/r2/clusters.pdf
    and this paper:
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/ias/ohs/collateral/r2/bp-core-v2.PDF
gives best HTTP and deployment practices that might answer your question.

  • Very basic questions about JSP server and plug-in.

    Hi all,
I am wondering what are other ways to make use of the JSP script on a server running normal Apache without changing it to Tomcat. Is there a plug-in version of JSP for Apache that will enable JSP? I am looking for something like PHP plug-in, which is quite generic. They even have a php.exe that OHTTP (a great shareware Win32 web server) can call to run PHP. Is there such thing along this line with JSP on Win32 or Linux? Thanks!

You need a jsp/servlet engine, and in effect, Tomcat is the "plug-in" you described. Tomcat has basic web server functionality built in, so it can run stand-alone, but it's most commonly used with a robust web server like Apache. You don't have to "change it" to Tomcat - you just configure Apache to forward specific urls (anything ending in *.jsp, for example) to Tomcat.

  • Basic understanding about Essbase Server and Administration Services

    Hi
I am a newbie to the Essbase. I am trying to figure out the diference between Server and Services.I am very confused.
    Please clarify my understanding
Essbase Server - This is a server in which Essbase stores all the data.
Essbase Administration Services -This is a agent used to communicate to the Essbase Server from the front end ( Admin Console)
Admin Console - This is a front end client used to connect to different Essbase Servers. It is possible to have Essbase Servers to be installed on different machines.
Before connecting to client Admin console we should make sure Essbase SErver and Essbase Administration SErvices are up and running
    Thanks
    Arun

    hello friend
what ever your saying about essbase server and EAS is correct. If you want more detailed explanation on this please have a look into essbase architecture check this link which gives you better insight
    http://gerardnico.com/wiki/epm/essbase/essbase_architecture
it not necessary that Essbase server and EAS should be on the same machine.we can add differnt servers in EAS console.
As far as your last question(Before connecting to client Admin console we should make sure Essbase SErver and Essbase Administration SErvices are up and running)
Before logon to EAS we have to make sure that essbase server, essbase admin services and openldap are up and running
    thanks

  • DMZ pattern with single HTTP server and OC4J separated

I am new to Oracle products and I am I trying to configure 9iAS Rel 2 for a JSP/servlet project and would greatly appreciate any comments or pointers to specific documents that may be helpful.
I would like to use the DMZ pattern for a small application without clustering anything or installing Infrastructure. I would like to have just the HTTP server between the two firewalls and have the application server (hosting the business logic) and the database server (9i Rel 2) behind the second firewall. I want to keep this as simple as possible.
Is there any way to install just an HTTP server (such as Apache) in between the two firewalls and have it direct requests to the Oracle 9i (Rel 2) application server (J2EE & Web cache installation) behind the second firewall?
If that is not possible (due to the need for Oracle's HTTP server and mod_OC4J to forward requests), then I would assume that I would have to install a copy of 9iAS on the one machine between the two firewalls (so that I would have the Oracle HTTP server with mod_OC4J) and then install another copy on a machine behind the second firewall (to host the business logic). Is this correct?
With those installations in place, would I then follow the modifications that are mentioned in "Scenario C: Routing (or clustering) Instances Across Firewalls" of the 'Oracle9i Application Server: mod_oc4j Technical Overview' (i.e modify the following files opmn.xml, ons.conf mod_oc4j.conf) so that the 9iAS in between the two firewalls ignores its OC4J and forwards requests the to 9iAS behind the second firewall? (I know that this document is talking about clustering which is what I do not want to do, but I can't find any information about trying to put a single instance of a HTTP server in the DMZ while having a single instance of OC4J behind the second firewall).
Would a better approach be to install a copy of 9iAS in the DMZ and then install a stand along copy of OC4J behind the second firewall?
Does mod_oc4j automatically install with the J2EE and Web cache installation of 9iAS Rel 2?
    Thanks for your insights,
    - David

You'r on the right track. You can't install just OHS or just OC4J seperatly but you can get the end result you are looking for.
Install an iAS instance (j2ee&webcache) in the DMZ and shutdown all but the OHS process.
Instanll a second iAS instance behind your firewall an shut down all but the OC4J process.
you now have effectively what you want OHS in the DMZ and OC4J at the intranet.
Now if you follow the directions in the Mod_oc4j overview doc. You modify the ons.conf by using the dcmctl commands
    getopmnport/addopmnlink
Then you modify the mod_oc4j.conf using the instance:// tag to rouet requests from the OHS in the DMZ to the OC4J's
    in the intranet.
You will need to open ports in the firewall for the ajp traffic between OHS and the OC4J's

  • Front-end HTTP Server and Performance with .jspx pages?

This is more of a general question that I'm looking for validation:
If the majority of our website is implemented as .jspx pages, with very few straight HTML pages, is there benefit in deploying to an environment with a separate HTTP front-end web server and back-end Application server (java container)? For example, I'm deploying to Tomcat as both the HTTP server and Java Application server for the .jspx pages; is there a performance advantage in deploying to an Apache HTTP server with a connector to Tomcat if I'm primarily serving up .jspx pages? I'm not as familiar with Oracle AS architecture, so my question is primarily around Tomcat deployment.

  • Question about clear page and reset pagination

    Hi,
I have a question about clear pages and the reset pagination in an URL. What is the reason why a clear page doesn't also trigger a reset pagination on the pages which are cleared?
I can't really imagine a business case where it makes sense to clear all data of page items on a page and don't reset the pagination of reports on that page which probably use a page item in there where clause...
The drawback of this behavior is that a developer always has to set the reset pagination checkbox when he clears the target page and the even bigger drawback is that if you specify other pages to clear, you can't reset pagination for them, because reset pagination only works for the target page.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Oracle HTTP server, Oracle 9iAS server, Oracle APPS 11i

    Hi, expert:
I was reading the Oracle Applicaitons Concepts (11i). There three tiers in Apps. In the middle tier there are: Web Server, Forms Server, Concurrent Processing Server, Reports Server and Admin Server.
But when I look our company's EBS architecture below (middle tier only here), I am confused. Does 9iAS includs HTTP server? Or 9i is the middle tier? what is Apps 11i? We have Unix and 11.5.10.2.
    Oracle HTTP server
    Oracle 9iAS
    Oracle Apps 11i
    Forms server
    Concurrent Manger
Really appreciate you to help me.
    Edited by: 870765 on Jul 13, 2011 9:41 AM

    Oracle HTTP server
Oracle 9iASThis is the web service component -- $IAS_ORACLE_HOME
If you stop those services you will not be able to access the main login page or any Self-Service page in the application.
    Oracle Apps 11iThis is the application release (which is a group of components/tiers) -- 11i means 11.5.x (where x is from 1 to 10) or 11.5.10.1 (CU1), 11.5.10.2 (CU2)
    Oracle Apps 11i comes with 3 ORACLE_HOMEs (Web: $IAS_ORACLE_HOME, Developer (Forms/Reports): 8.0.6 ORACLE_HOME, Database: $RDBMS_ORACLE_HOME).
    Oracle Apps 11i = Oracle Application Tier ($APPL_TOP, $COMMON_TOP, iAS ORACLE_HOME, 8.0.6 ORACLE_HOME) + Oracle Database Tier (RDBMS ORACLE_HOME).
Forms serverThis is Oracle Developer 6i home -- 8.0.6 ORACLE_HOME
If you stop the forms server you cannot open any form.
Concurrent MangerThis component is not represented in a separate ORACLE_HOME and the executable files can be found under $APPL_TOP directory ($FND_TOP/bin).
If you stop the CM, you cannot submit concurrent requests but you can still access the application and open the forms.
If you stop the database, you cannot access any part of the application.
    Thanks,

  • Questions about application server architecture

    Hello guys,
I have few questions about application server architecture
I have a task to build a server application which will do the following: Clients (special java clients) will connect to it and send some data for further processing on server side. Chunks of data will be relatively small but they will take a lot of time for processing (it is ok that it will be quite slow).
Also server will run some sort of database where all clients working data will be stored. So, in case a client loses its data he/she is always able to download it from the server.
For me it seems, like server will consist of the following components:
    1. Reception. This part will be responsible for all client-communication procedures.
    2. Data storage. This part will simply store all clients data and provide some API interface for clients through reception to manage it (add/get/delete and so on).
    3. Processor. Some sort of dummy-sophisticated module. It will take some input data from data storage when it receives order for this and process it. Processor will have two states: busy which means processor processing some data and available which means processor ready to process new data.
    4. Manager. This part will always check data storage for new data and processor for availability. When processor and new data are available manager will make an order for processor to take new data from data storage and process it.
So, my question is the following: Which technology and approaches I should use to realize my plan?
I think that I can make reception as a Session Bean, but I dont know yet, what are the best for the rest, for example manager and processor. I was thinking about writing my own application server (and I can do it), but I would like to learn j2ee technologies, so I think it is a perfect chance for me (I read a lot about j2ee before I wrote this post, but all examples have only account-bill-money transfer I think it is quite far away from reality or I am doing something wrong ;-)!
p.s. I am thinking about using JBoss as an Application Server. I tested it and wrote some tests. They work and run fast enough, so I like it. Moreover it has module architecture.
Please, give me some advises and tips!
    Thank you in advance!

    1. Reception. This part will be responsible for all
client-communication procedures.Session bean with remote interface.
    2. Data storage. This part will simply store all
clients data and provide some API interface for
clients through reception to manage it
(add/get/delete and so on).Session bean that will use entity beans or hibernate to work with persistant data.
    3. Processor. Some sort of dummy-sophisticated
module.Use a message driven bean. Make Reception to enqueue a message when new data is available for processing. Processor will process the data and store the resut in database using Data Storage session bean.
    4. Manager. This part will always check data
storage for new data and processor for
availability. When processor and new data are
available manager will make an order for
processor to take new data from data storage and
process it.It's redundand component, because application server will manage messages and processors.

  • A question about item "type and release" of  source system creation

    Hello expert,
I have a question about item "type and release" of  source system creation.
As we know, when we create a web servie source system, there will display a pop-up which includes three items as "logical system","source system"and "type and release".
About the item "type and release",when we push "F4" button, there will be three default selections as below:
    "ORA 115     Oracle Applications 11i
    TLF 205     Tealeaf 2.05B
    XPD 020     SAP xPD".
Who can tell me when and how should I use the three selections.
And also I attempted to input the item by some optional letters except the default three selections and it seems that I can input it freely.
    Thank you and Best Regards,
    Maggie

    Hello DMK,
Thank you very much for your answer. It is very helpful for me.
Can I ask you further about it?
I got that it is a semantic description item.
You said the default selections are set by our basis people.Would you like to tell me how should we creat a new value except the default ones for item "type and release"?Only by inputing the value in the item directly? But you see we canot see the new value item we created by ourself when we push "F4" button next time ,is that ok?Or do we have to ask basis people to define one new value item just like the default seletions before we use it.
Also if possible would you like to describe detail about "This becomes important when you are troubleshooting certain issues especially when RFC connection problems."
    Thank you and Best Regards,
    Maggie

  • Question About Color's and Gradients

    Hi all,
I have a question about color swatches and gradients.
I am curious to know, if I have 2 color swatches that I make into a gradient color, is it posible to change the tint of each indivdual color in that gradient and have that applied to the gradient without having to adjust the gradients opacity.
The reason that I'm asking this is because in creating a project I found that the colors that I chose for to make my gradient from my swatches were to dark, and while I can adjust each one's tint to my liking (if the object they were applied to was going to be a solid color) but that doesn't seem to apply to the overall gradient.
I hope that makes sense, I know that this was something that was able to be accomplished in quark and was wondering if I can do something similar.

If you double click your gradient swatch (after adding it to the swatches)
Then click a colour stop in the gradient, and then change the drop down menu to CMYK (or rgb)
And you can alter the percentages there. It's not much use for spot colours but it's a start.
But making tint swatches would be a good start anyway.
At least then when you double click the gradient (in the swatches) to edit it you can choose from CMYK, RGB, LAB, or Swatches and adjust each colour stop to your liking.

  • The question about portlet customization and synchronization

I have a question about portlet customization and synchronization.
    When I call
    NameValuePersonalizationObject data = (NameValuePersonalizationObject) PortletRendererUtil.getEditData(portletRenderRequest);
    portletRenderRequest.setPortletTitle(str);
    portletRenderRequest.putString(aKey, aValue);
    PortletRendererUtil.submitEditData(portletRenderRequest, data);
Should I make any synchronization myself (use "synchronized" blocks or something else) or this procedure is made thread-safe on the level of the Portal API?

    HI Dimitry,
I dont think you have to synchronize the block. i guess the code is synchronized internally.

  • 10g: HTTP Server and OC4J on different servers?

Can anyone assist with configuring HTTP Server and OC4J on different servers?
I installed AS 10g on both; our application runs fine on one server, with the HTTP Server and OC4J both on the same box.
I need to also test this with the HTTP Server on a separate box.
    I added this to mod_ocj4.conf:

    Oc4jMount /indox-qa1/*

  • A few questions about the ka790gx and dka790gx

i have a few questions about the ka790gx and dka790gx , how much better is the dka790gx compaired to the ka790gx ? . how much difference does the ACC function make to overclocking etc , i plan on getting a phenom II 940BE or 720BE . i already have the ka790gx so would it be worth building another system using the dka790gx mobo , or should i keep what i already have and just change the cpu ?

It's largely irrelevant what other boards had VRM issues other than the KA790GX - the fact is it died at stock settings. Since there is little cost difference between the more robust DKA790GX (or Platinum if you really need 1394) why bother with the proven weakling? There are other examples around of the KA not having a robust power section.  There's no way I would use even a 95W TDP CPU in the KA and absolutely not O/C.....!
As for the credentials of Custom PC, I have generally found their reviews accurate and balanced, and echo my own findings where applicable. If a little too infrequent.
The fact that the KA has such a huge VRM heatsink leads me to my other comments on the Forum, particularly regarding the "fudge" aspect:
"""Henry is spot on - the notion that adding a heatsink to the top of the D2PAK or whatever MOSFETS is effective is virtually worthless. The device's die thermal junction is the tab on the device back - which is always against the PCB pad. The majority of heat is therefore dissipated in to the board, and the fact that the epoxy plastic encapsulation gets hot is simply due to the inability of the heat to be conducted away from the device die via the tab. Not sure when Epoxy become an effective conductor of heat.... Good practice is to increase the size of the PCB pad (or "land" in American) such that the enlarged PCB copper area acts as an adequate heatsink. This is still not as effective as clamping a power device tab to an actual piece of ali or copper, but since the devices used are SMD devices, this is not possible. However, the surface area required to provide sufficient PCB copper area to act as a heatsink for several devices isn't available in the current motherboard layouts. Where industrial SBC designs differ in this respect is to place the VRM MOSFETs on the back of the PCB on very enlarged PCB pads - where real estate for components is not an issue.
Gigabyte's UD3 2oz copper mainboards sound like a good idea, on the face of it. However, without knowing how they have connected the device tabs to where and what remains a mystery. I suspect it is more hype than solution, although there will be some positive effect. From an electrical perspective, having lower resistance connecting whatever to whatever (probably just a 0V plane) is no bad thing.
The way the likes of ASUS sort of get round the problem is to increase the sheer number of MOSFET devices and effectively spread the heat dissipation over a larger physical area. This works to a degree, there is the same amount of heat being dissipated, but over several more square inches. The other advantage of this is that each leg of the VRM circuit passes less current and therefore localised heat is reduced. Remember that as well as absolute peak operating temperature causing reduced component life, thermal cycling stresses the mechanical aspects of components (die wire bonds for example) as well as the solder joints on the board. Keeping components at a relatively constant temperature, even if this is high (but within operating temperature limits), is a means of promoting longevity.
For myself, the first thing I do with a seperate VRM heatsink is take it off and use a quiet fan to blow air on to the VRM area of the PCB - this is where the heat is. This has the added benefit of actively cooling the inductors and capacitors too....
Cooling the epoxy component body is a fudge. If the epoxy (and thus any heatsink plonked on top of it) is running at 60C, the component die is way above that.....
It's better than nothing, but only just."""

  • Few questions about apex + epg and cookie blocked by IE6

    Hi,
I would like to ask a few questions about apex and epg.
I have already installed and configured apex 3.2 on oracle 10g (on my localhost - computer name 'chen_rong', ip address -192.168.88.175 ), and enable anonymous access xdb http server.
    now,
    1. I can access 'http://chen_rong' , 'http://localhost' , 'http://192.168.88.175' without input username / password for realm 'XDB' in IE6;
    2. I can access 'http://localhost/apex/apex_admin' , 'http://192.168.88.175/apex/apex_admin' , and I can be redirected into apex administation page after input admin/<my apex admin password> for realm 'APEX' in IE6;
    3. I can access 'http://chen_rong/apex/apex_admin' in IE6, but after input admin/password , I can not be redirected into administation page, because the cookie was blocked by IE6.
then, the first question is :
Q1: What is the difference among 'http://chen_rong' , 'http://localhost' , 'http://192.168.88.175' ? I have already include site 'chen_rong' into my trusted stes! why the cookie was blocked by IE6. I have already tried firefox and google browser, both of them were ok for 'chen_rong', no cookie blocked from site 'chen_rong'!
    and,
    1. I have tried to use the script in attachment to test http authentication and also want to catch the cookie by utl_http .
    2. please review the script for me.
    3. I did:
    SQL> exec show_url('http://localhost/apex/apex_admin/','ADMIN','Passw0rd');
    HTTP response status code: 401
    HTTP response reason phrase: Unauthorized
Please supplied the required Basic authentication username/password for realm XDB for the Web page.

I use oracle database enterprise edtion 10.2.0.3. I have already figured out the epg on 10.2.0.3 to support apex 3.2.
And as I described above, the apex site works fine for ip address , and localhost. but the cookie will be blocked by IE6, if I want to access the site by 'http://computername:port/apex/apex_admin'. This problem does not occured in firefox and google browser. Could someone give me answer?
