Question about photo folders

I have some photo folders on the Touch, but once they are on, how do you delete them if you need/want to?

Currently you can't delete photos or photo albums directly from the iPod Touch.
If you want to delete an entire photo album, you'll have to connect your iPod to the computer and uncheck the correspondent photo folder.
If you want to delete certain photos from a photo album, you'll have to delete or take out those pictures from the folder on your computer.

Question About Photo Printers

Excuse me for asking a question about photo printers here, but I could not find a place in the Apple Discussions form for printers.
I'm thinking about buying an Epson R1900 printer since my primary selection criteria is the quality of glossy photographs.
However, I have been told that use of the R1900 for general purposes (with a "standard" printer setting and non-photo paper) will detract from the R1900's performance when it will be used for printing photos (with photo RPM printer settings on premium photo paper or other media). But I just do not know whether this is correct. I was planning to have only one printer and expecting to use the photo printer as my "general purpose" printer (text, documents etc.).
I would appreciate receiving advice/guidance from people who know about printers and/or people having with experience with the Epson R1900.

I use my photo printer in two ways.
For high quality prints I use the manufacturers Glossy paper and their expensive archival Quality inks for excellent results. More commonly though, I change out those ink cartridges and replace them with a cheaper water soluble ink bought online and use normal A4 copy paper for printing web pages and PDF documents.
This second practice is about 60% cheaper in ink and copy paper is only about 1 cent per sheet and is satisfactory for such documents.
The disadvantage is that is does require physically replacing one set of ink cartridges for the other, also if moving from basic to quality, I also do the inkhead alignment tests and adjustments to ensure that the output for glossy photos is going to be first rate.
I find this necessary to prevent waste of good pigments, yet it still allows the printer to be used for more mundane usage of printing documents. The cost of printers is heavily discounted, as the manufacturers recoup their cost from the sale of ink. Hence one needs to have this dual usage in place to get the best of both worlds.
This advice is not specific to one model photo printer, rather it is a general approach developed after spending too much money on good ink, printing web pages.

Thinking of making the PC to Mac Move, questions about Photos App

Helped my mother on her Mac a little bit and got the Photos App working for her. Now my turn, I have been a die hard Windows user, but I will never use a Windows phone. (Can never give up my iPhone) I have been taking on a huge family project of scanning old photos and dating them. Along with digital photos from early 2000’s. I have probably about 10,000 photos. (And 20,000 more to scan) In Windows I use photo gallery 2012 to organize and date etc. my photos. The thing I like about photo gallery is that when I make a change to a photo it edits the original. The dates and GPS I add to the photo are forever saved to the file in the metadata.
I am very tempted to move to a Mac. (I have an iPhone & Apple TV, I would like to sync across all my devices) I never like iPhoto, the idea of a “non destructive” editing means I have to import and export photos. I think the new Photos app might work for me.
A few questions:
If I move all my directories/folders of my photos to a Mac, will I be able to use the Mac Photo App to edit the photos and the changes I make be saved directly to the photo file in the respective folder? (Or are the photos then saved in a new location after being edited in the Mac Photo App?)
If I turn on the iCloud Photo Library (on the Mac & iPhone) I understand all my photos will be uploaded to the cloud and any changes made on either device will be seen on the other. My question, if I make changes to a photo that is in the iCloud will that change be made to the original photo file that is stored on the Mac? (Basically I want to have at all times a hard drive copy for my personal backup)
With the iCloud Photo Library feature I understand that any new photo I take with my iPhone is uploaded to the iCloud. Are the photos taken on the iPhone physically downloaded to the Mac? I know I can view them on the Mac Photo app, but I want to know if they are downloaded to the Mac and if so where does it save the new photos?

I do not use ICloud so someone else will need to answer those questions. For question one though... Photos, like Aperture and Iphoto before it, puts your photos in its own filing system. You would need to export the photos to get them back out of Photos. You can export them to anywhere in your mac file system.

Questions about Photo Files

I am new to Mac and have a couple of questions about storing photo files just so I'm clear on everything I'm doing (or should be doing).
I have copied my files over from an external hard drive to the Pictures folder on the Mac which seems pretty much how they were stored in Windows. I have always used Photoshop to edit my photos and will be doing the same on the Mac plus I am going to start using Aperture.
I thought I would check out iPhoto today and if I understand correctly it imported (copied) all the photos in my files over to it so now there are two copies of all my photos and double the space taken up on the hard drive. Can someone confirm this is true and if probably not the best way to store my photos since I will be using Photoshop?
My second question, is there a way to have thumbnails of the photos in folders with out opening the folders?
Any and all advice on photo files, storage, ect. is welcome!

That's correct - when iPhoto imports your images, it stores them in its library (Pictures/iPhoto/iPhoto Library, which appears to the Finder as a single file, but which is actually a package containing files and folders). It doesn't delete the original version.
Both Aperture and Adobe Bridge (which is bundled with Photoshop) will themselves have the ability to manage your images, so you'll probably want to decide which application you prefer for image organisation and stick with one or the other. Aperture and iPhoto will also work together, so you can actually choose to store your masters in iPhoto if you prefer its image management.
Both Aperture and Bridge have "thumbnail view" of an image library, or you can do a quick and dirty preview by opening the image folder in the Finder and switching to icon view (and using the View Options menu - cmd-J - to increase the icon size if necessary).

Questions about photos and resizing

Hello I have a simple question about resizing photos. When I grab one of the corners of a photo it will resize everything instead of just changing it horizontally or veritcally. Anyone know of a way to fix this??

In the Metrics inspector window, uncheck the box next to "Constrain proportions".
However, resizing in just one direction or not uniformly will distort the image.

There should be no difference in functionality for these two kinds of folders. You can perform all the operations on these two kinds of folders without any difference, for example, delivery messages, create view settings/rules and etc.

New to mac and iphoto, questions about photo structure & organization

I bought a new Macbook Pro a couple of days ago and am still figuring things out. I wasn't displeased with windows...I just decided to try a mac anyway, So far, I adore it except for one thing, the pictures.
I spent hours researching whether to download and use picasa 3 for mac or iphoto. I decided on picasa....and now I've changed my mind. (Mostly because I tried to take pictures of the moon tonight, and they looked great in camera, but Picasa could only pick up a black screen whearas iphoto actually saw and defined the moon- and with the editing software on the two, the picasa auto-edit looked like a picture that was created in microsoft paint, and iphoto came out with a beautifully contrasted photo).
Now that I decided to use iphoto, I have been researching how to switch and still seem to have a lot of questions. (I've poked around numerous forums but have found conflicting answers on different sites).
1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
3) All of my friends and family use PCs, and there is a chance that due to financial concerns, when I eventually replace my macbook pro (far in the future) I could switch to a pc. Does iphoto make transferring pictures more difficult? (If I understand correctly, it does not change the photo file, a jpeg is still a jpeg but I want to be sure)
4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Also, just a "bonus"- regarding events vs. files I create, will iphoto create events within the program but leave my file structure in the library it imports from alone? If I use finder to go to where I store my photos, will I still see my file structure regardless of what iphoto does?(Does that make sense? I'm having a hard time trying to describe it)

Your questions are neither foolish nor misplaced.
The first thing I strongly suggest is that you make a trial iPhoto Library. Import 100 or 200 pics and explore. Iphoto isn't right for everybody, and if you're going to use it you will need to rethink things a little.

A: Events are based entirely on Date and Time not on 'photo similarity' You can set the interval for what makes an Event in the iPhoto Preferences: iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General Pane: Autosplit into Events... And select from the drop down menu.
Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
Yes or no, depending... iPhoto can run as a Referenced or Managed Library. In the former case, yes you files will be visible in the Finder, in the latter case they won't.
Note that Referenced or Managed refers +only to file storage+ It offers no extra functionality, it does nothing at all. App like iPhoto are your go-to app for your photos. If you use it, then you never access the photos via the Finder. Ever. It's always via iPhoto or the many, many hooks into the OS that it has.
I'll detail more on Referenced v Managed below.
2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Iphoto does basic date and time organisation by default. You can change it, you can change the location of the photos in Events, merge them and then using the other tools available - Albums, Smart Albums, Faces, Places etc you can organise your photos whatever way you want.
But what do you mean by pictures. There is a distinction between Photos - the image of your child holding his dog - and files: A Jpeg is just a file. Iphoto is designed for you to +forget about the jpeg+ and get on with the interesting bit: the pics of your younger and his pet.

A Jpeg is a Jpeg is a Jpeg. If you migrate to another app or an entire OS you can export the photos plus any and all metadata you've added to the Finder and move it on. (Caveat: You cannot export Faces. There is no agreed standard on any system for exchanging this info.)
4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
It can do either. And this brings me back to the Referenced v Managed discussion above. By default, iPhoto will Manage the files, that is, it will copy them into the Library. You can choose not to, but I strongly recommend that you don't:
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*If you want to edit the photo in another application:*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
*To Push Home a point*
For someone inexperienced with Macs and inexperienced with iPhoto I cannot stress enough that Managed Library is the way to go. I understand there is comfort in seeing all those folders. But inside the Library that's all there is: all those folders, stored so that an inexperienced user can't grub things up!
The iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. Want to see inside?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Now close that window and forget about it.
So, once you've imported your photos to iPhoto in a Managed Library, the surplus duplicates are +your folders+. Of course, in time, trash them to get back the wasted disk space. But don't do it today or tomorrow. There's no hurry. When you feel confident that you understand how iPhoto is working and that's it's working for you, theat's the time to reclaim the space.

If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Drag the app to the trash and empty it.

Technical question about photo files... involving Q, i think~

Does anyone know how photo files retain their information given from the camera? For example, the time and date that they were taken. Is there another way or program that allows me to view these details swiftly? Are these little pieces of information easily lost if I transfer the images from one application/program to the next??? I'm sentimental, and like being able to refer to images when I need an exact time for an event...
I love iPhoto for its organization of images and how convenient it is to glance over to the left to find the "Information" tab containing the time and date of when each photo was taken.
However, after making a back-up of my iPhoto libraries folder, I realized that there are about 5 or 6 GB of extra information created for my 4000+ images (due to thumbnails created for each image, etc) versus just having them in folders would save me 5 or 6 GB. Additionally, when I look at my images through finder, I find redundant files, like:
IMG_0001 and IMG00012 (these two images are exactly the same). Is there a way to get rid of these files safely?

That info in stored in the photo file as EXIF data - many programs will read and display the EXIF date - Generally it travels well with the photo

The only safe way to get rid of photos in iPhoto is to delete them using iPhoto - drag them to the iphoto trash and empty the iPhoto trash

This buys you non destructive editing, the ability to revert to the original at any time and virtually unlimited organization capability with keywords, albums, smart albums, ratings etc.

Question about Photo Management

Hello -
I am an amateur photographer with a few thousand photos and just bought Aperture 2 to replace iPhoto. One of the things that always irked me about iPhoto was the file structure, and I longed to be able to organize my photos into my own folders within the finder. Somehow, in my mind, this always made them more tangible and accessible.
My question is... Is this opinion founded, or is it just as viable to store them in the Aperture library and be done with it? I'd love to hear how the "pros" do it.

There is not such thing as a "pro way" of working with Aperture. It all depends on your own unique workflow.
If all your adjustment and manipulation need can be fullfilled by the functionality in Aperture then the easy and simple solution will be to store all your images in the Aperture library. This will allow you to take advantage of features like complete backing up to vaults.
If you for some process reason (for example panorama stitching) want other software applications to have access to your master files then there are two options. Yu can store all your masters as referenced files or your could just export those specific masters from the Aperture library when you need them. The new plug-in feature may in the future provide "round-tripping" capability to support your specific needs.
I think that you should decide if you want and need to use the limited features in the Finder to locate specific images. Aperture is a image management application that offers almost any thinkable way of structuring, searching, sorting and filtering your images. It do not make any difference if your images are stored in the Aperture library or if they are referenced from locations outside your Aperture library. You will in any case need to import your images into Aperture in order to take advantage of the image management functionality.
I am not a pro photog but I hope this answers some of your questions.

Two questions about photos

I remember on other editing softwares using zooming and a sort of "sweeping" from left ro right etc. over photos. Is that possible with this program?
Also, how do you pre-set how long the photos are going to be (this is for a different purpose, but thought I'd go ahead and ask about this as well), say if you're making a stop motion video. It's very time consuming to adjust the time for each photo.
Help with either of these two is very appreciated.

With the questions that you ask, you put us at a disadvantage by not saying at the onset what version of Premiere Elements that you are using and on what computer operating system it is running. Or, is it that you do not have any version of Premiere Elements at the present time?

1. Set Edit Menu/Preferences/General and set "Still Image Default Duration" BEFORE you import your photos into the project
2. Import photos, set duration of one with Time Stretch...then select that one, Edit Menu/Copy, select the rest Edit Menu/Paste Effects and Adjustments if you are in Premiee Elements 11.
3. If you are after a 1 frame photo duration for all visit the concept of Numbered Stills.

I suspect you are talking about pan and zooming. If so, Premiere Elements 11 has
a. Pan and Zoom Tool
b. Effects/Presets for pan OR zoom
c. Keyframing of the Motion/Scale (Zoom) and Position (Pan).

A question about photo storage.

In several cases photos in my Library are used in multiple albums and slideshows. This has the effect of having them show up multiple times in the Library. My question is, are there actually multiple instances of these Photos (because some of them are quite large), or are these just thumbnails?
I'm worried about disk space if the photos actually exist in duplicate.

Are you referring to the iPhoto Window or to the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder?
In the iPhoto Window Albums and slideshows are virtual entities - a pic can be in 1, 10 or 100 albums and slideshows with no wasted disk space.
If you're referring to the iPhoto Library Folder then it's meant to be like that and It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

Question about Originals folders

im currently running iphoto 5.0.4, and in a few days my ilife09 will arrive and ill upgrade to that. until then, im trying to get as firm of a hold on how to operate iphoto as i can, with using what i have.
my question is, what is the point of these Originals folders im seeing? what do they do what are they for?

Note - iPhoto is a database and it depends on the content AND structure of the iPhoto library - any changes made to it may corrupt the library and cause you to lose data
In iPhoto '09 the iPhoto library is a UNIX style package and with Leopard there are many safe ways to access your photos - going directly into the library is not one of them - there simply are no user serviceable parts in the iPhoto library
The iPhoto library contains many elements - the originals folder contains the original photos, the modified folder the modified photos for any photo that have been edited, the data folder the thumbnails for display

Question about photo icons on songs.

Hey guys, I got a simple question to ask.
Well, I just got a new 30GB Ipod Video today, and it works fine. However, after I added all of my songs to my ipod, I also wanted to upload the little photo icons next to them as well when you play a song. So I put one photo on an entire album, but then when I disconnected my Ipod, it's not there! Can someone help me?

Since the iPod might have updated before you applied the artwork you may have to update the iPod again. Press "File"> "update iPod" to update it without having to disconnect and reconnect your iPod.

I didn't see any questions related to photos so i'm posting this: If I have deleted a particular picture in iphoto, is it saved anywhere else on the macBook Pro? Because I just checked the folder "all documents" and i still see the pics I already deleted

To delete a Photo:
Put it in the iPhoto Trash, Empty it.
If you're using iPhoto 11...
Then empty the System Trash

Have a few questions about photos

I made a few folders on my mac to help separate my pictures for easier navigation. I wanted to know how to change the album cover photo. The picture right now is a picture of that flower. I wanted to make the album cover one of the pictures in the folder. Is that possible???
Also, do I have to keep those new folders on my mac? I'm guessing I have to. Since you have to keep anything you sync onto your phone on the computer otherwise it deletes next time you sync it

You can't change the icon of the iPhone's Photos application, or the icon for the iPhone's Photo Library, which is where all photos transferred from your computer are stored.
I use iPhoto on my Mac for importing photos from a digital camera and for photo storage and management. With an iPhoto Event or Album, you can designate a photo within the Event or Album to be the photo for the Event or Album, which will be transferred to your iPhone when syncing photos with iPhoto. I'm not sure if the same is available when manually managing photos on your Mac and if so, how this is done.
If you delete photos from your computer's hard drive that are selected to be transferred to your iPhone after transferring the photos to your iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process, the photos will be deleted from your iPhone with the next sync.
