Question about pictures file in home folder

I am trying to create more space on my hard drive and have a question about the pictures file.
In addition to the iPhoto Library I have several folders named 1, 2, 3 etc each containing a bunch of photos; plus several hundred individual photo files.
My question is whether these files are duplicates of what is in the iPhoto Library - and is there an easy way to find that out?
And I guess also to find out how they got there in the first place. Could these be imports from disks as opposed to my digital camera?
Thanks for any help,
Laura

Hey laura,
I haven't used iPhoto for a while but from memory i think that i work similar to iTunes. Whne files are processed by iPhoto they are catalogued on the hard drive according to the iPhoto preferences. I would check out the iPhoto preferences and see if you can see anything in here that will tell you what is going on.

How do I find/restore files from items in secure (File Vault) home folder? How do I find/restore files that crashed when in finder of secure (File Vault) home folder?  When I go into Time Machine, I see earlier dates but can't see files in my User File. I have File Vault turned on and see my home folder as a sparsebundle.  Do I neede to restore this in order to see files in my home folder.  When I click on it to restore it gives me an estimated time of over 2 hours.  Also tried to restore an Excel file I was working on when computer hung, so lost it without saving or naming it.  Does it exist anyplace and can I restore it?

Thanks. I had pretty much figured out from other posts that I had better turn off File Vault for my home folder and use a disk utility sparse bundel for little information I wanted to secure. The information about File Vault 2 in Lion was new and useful though.

I have a Tecra M2 and rely on your email update to ensure I have the latest drivers on my machine.
When I received a Toshiba support email on 14 April 2005 giving reference to a QFE from Microsoft I assumed it would be necessary for my Tecra.
I was very confused when I found that this QFE and subsequent ones posted on the 16 April 2005 relate to Pre SP2 critical updates no9t required if one has already taken earlier advice of updating to Service Pack, at the very least your narrative should make mention of this. I find it very difficult to believe that your updates are two+ years out of date.

  • Question about openning files using SDK 10.

I have written a Plug-In for SDK 9 that works wonderfully. One of the functions is for the user to be able to page (Next/Previous) between PDF files on our server. This functionality now longer works without crashing Acrobat 10. All I am doing is creating the URL path to the next/previous PDF, creating a CustomFileSys with the path and calling AVDocOpenFromFile.
Does this no longer work with Acrobat 10 SDK?
    Thanks!

    Should work fine, AFAIK.
For this level of issue, I would open a formal support request with developer support.

  • Questions about properties files

    Hello,
I have two questions about properties files.
    1. Is it possible to import a properties file from another properties file?
    2. Is it possible to have variables in a properties file as described below in code snippet.
    Thanks in advance,
    Julien.
    Code snippet:
    var_one=foo
    var_two=$var_one bar
The second line would then read "foo bar"

    Hello,
I have two questions about properties files.
    1. Is it possible to import a properties file from
another properties file?If you write your own code to parse whatever import statement you decide to put in the properties file, yes. But there's no provision to do so in the core APIs or in the standard usage of these files.
    2. Is it possible to have variables in a properties
file as described below in code snippet.Same as the answer to your first question. Though this kind of thing is more common, so there might be a library at jakarta or sourceforge or mindprod or something that does this.

  • Questions about Photo Files

I am new to Mac and have a couple of questions about storing photo files just so I'm clear on everything I'm doing (or should be doing).
I have copied my files over from an external hard drive to the Pictures folder on the Mac which seems pretty much how they were stored in Windows. I have always used Photoshop to edit my photos and will be doing the same on the Mac plus I am going to start using Aperture.
I thought I would check out iPhoto today and if I understand correctly it imported (copied) all the photos in my files over to it so now there are two copies of all my photos and double the space taken up on the hard drive. Can someone confirm this is true and if probably not the best way to store my photos since I will be using Photoshop?
My second question, is there a way to have thumbnails of the photos in folders with out opening the folders?
Any and all advice on photo files, storage, ect. is welcome!
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
That's correct - when iPhoto imports your images, it stores them in its library (Pictures/iPhoto/iPhoto Library, which appears to the Finder as a single file, but which is actually a package containing files and folders). It doesn't delete the original version.
Both Aperture and Adobe Bridge (which is bundled with Photoshop) will themselves have the ability to manage your images, so you'll probably want to decide which application you prefer for image organisation and stick with one or the other. Aperture and iPhoto will also work together, so you can actually choose to store your masters in iPhoto if you prefer its image management.
Both Aperture and Bridge have "thumbnail view" of an image library, or you can do a quick and dirty preview by opening the image folder in the Finder and switching to icon view (and using the View Options menu - cmd-J - to increase the icon size if necessary).

  • My MBA is being shipped, question about transferring files from old PB

    Hey guys,
I just ordered a new 13" MBA and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive... I currently have a 12" Powerbook G4 with 10.5.8 that I use an external drive to back up with time machine.
My question is this; when I get my MBA will I be able to use the time machine back up to migrate my files even though my old computer has an older version of Mac OS on it?

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • How to change the default location of 'Music', 'Pictures' in my home folder

IMAGINE I have 2 hard disk partitions on the SAME hard disk,
one is called 'Macintosh HD' and the other is called 'My Data'.
    The Plan:
In the 'Macintosh HD', there are (1) system files & (2) users' settings.
In the 'My Data', there are all the music, pictures, etc.
For example, the 'Macintosh HD' has 40GB and the 'My Data' has 120GB.
All I want to do is to *separate the SYSTEM and my DATA* _without migrating my home folder_ inside 'Macintosh HD' which contains folders called 'Music', 'Pictures'... to the partition 'My Data'.
_+*I want to separate the system files and my data incase I need to reinstall the Mac OS X while leaving all my data untouched.*+_
So the way I should do (I guess) is to leave my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' empty,
and create files called, for example, 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
Then _redirect the files 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'_ to _'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition_.
In Windows XP or Windows 7, you can redirect those as using the methods below:
    (1) http://i41.tinypic.com/2rorkhx.jpg
    (2) http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18629-user-folders-change-default-location. html
But I just don't know how to do that in Mac OS X, it seems that Mac OS X doesn't even provide a way for users to do so:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=336192
I saw a reply in macrumors forum and tried to move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders,
but it turned out that those files were being copied, not moved.
So I can't move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. to the partition 'My Data' and make aliases of them which can be put in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'.
So, are there only 3 options for me too choose?
    (1) stop trying to fight Apple and Mac OS X on where it puts things, just put all the things in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD', using only 1 partition
    (2) move my home folder to the other disk partition, in this case, the partition 'My Data'
    (3) can't redirect the location of Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders in my home folder in the 'Macintosh HD', but just simply put things in the 'My Data'.
    Thanks in advance!

    Here's the easy solution:
    1. Copy the folders you want on the My Data partition.
    2. Verify all files copied OK, then delete the same folders on Macintosh HD.
    3. Make an alias for each of the folders you have moved.
    4. Copy the aliases to your Macintosh HD/Users/Home folder.
    5. Delete the space and "alias" from each of the aliases so the have the exact same names as the originals.
DO NOT do this with the /Home/Library/ folder as the above will not work with that folder.
When you attempt to delete the folders you have moved the OS will complain that it cannot delete them because they are needed by OS X. This is normal. In order to delete the original folders and rename the aliases you will need to boot the computer from another drive or from the OS X installer disc. But for the latter you will need to run the Terminal (from the installer's Utilities menu) and use Unix commands to delete the folders and rename the aliases. If you know how to use the Terminal then the entire operation can be done from the command line. See the following:
    1. Boot the computer into single-user mode.
    2. At the prompt enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Users/yourusername
    mv /Documents "/Volumes/My Data/rest of path/Documents"
Repeat the above line replacing "Documents" with the names of the other folders you are moving. The "mv" command actually moves the folders rather than copying them.
    ln -s "/Volumes/My Data/rest of path/Documents" /Users/Documents
Repeat this line for the other folders replacing "Documents" with the names of the other folders.
You may find printing out the command line routine using a large mono-spaced font useful in assuring you spot the spaces in each command line. Note that the quotes used in the command lines above are required.
Enter "reboot" without quotes to restart the computer.

  • If I photo just refers to the original photos in your home folder, how come that when i delete pictures in my home folder they are still in i photo?

I want to make more space and simply get rid of the pictures i don't want anymore.
I thought that I have to delete the pics in the original forlder becasue I photo is just a program that refers to the original folder, but apparently the pictures i deleted in the home folder, are still in my i photo library?
How is it possible and how can I synchronise these two libraries?

    Couple of possibilities:
By default, iPhoto does not reference the photos, and so unless you made a change in the iPhoto Preferences, then photos have also been copied to the Library,a nd you've been keeping two copies all along.
To delete  pic from iphoto, put it the iPhoto trash, empty it and then empty the system trash.
If you have been running a Referenced Library correctly, then you will need to delete the original file from your own folder storage as well. You chose to manage the files yourself.
There is no way to "synchronise these two Libraries". One is a database, the other is a collection of folders.

  • Question about Receipt files found in ~\Library\Receipts

    Hi there,
I recently bought a Mac Pro and now installing all my software for music production. Although I'm new to Snow Leopard, I've been using Tiger for the last five years, so I do know a little bit about Macs. My problem is that for some reason there has been a Receipts folder installed on my Sample Library volume instead of my home folder's Library folder. I'm not sure if I should move the Receipts folder from my Sample Library into my home folder's Library or if I should just delete the folder all together... I'm pretty sure the folder shouldn't be in my Sample Library, even though I instructed the installer of the particular software (Native Instruments Komplete 6) to install all the samples onto my Sample Library volume.
Could anyone shed some light as to what I should do? I've also posted on the Native Instruments forum but I don't think many would know as a lot of them use Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Daniel

    Hi guys,
Thanks for your replies. Inside are a bunch of receipt files for the actual audio files it looks like.
    Here's a screen shot:

I've emailed Native Instruments about it and hopefully they can give me some sort of advice. It's strange because I've installed other Native Instruments software before in the exact same manner and it never installed these receipt files. Weird.
    Thanks again.

Dear Peter (if I be so personal).  First, thank you for deleting my Email
address on the post and saving me a lot of spam.  Further, you were most
gracious in sending more specifics in regard to the answer of my question about
    using PM files in InDesign.
However, I am trying hard to understand your instructions to unembed "links" and
bring them up to date.  However, I have no idea of what links are, are they
something I would have intentionally done or are they automatic, and something
of which I have no control over?  How do I locate them?  Are these procedures
also necessity for using my old Photoshop 6 files?
I only use 2 Programs: PageMaker 6.5 and Photoshop 6.  I have inherited a newer
Mac with OS 10.6.8 which has only the basic Mac programs in it.  As you can
guess, I need to identify which are the proper newer programs to obtain for it,
with the least bit of effort and understanding.
I use PageMaker to write letters, and compose stories for printing in a Club
magazine.  I also resurrect previous stories, that I've stored through the
    years.
In Photoshop, I fix up new and old pictures for inclusion in stories and also
resurrect previous photos I've stored on an external Hard Drive, or placed on a
    CD.
If you would be so kind to steer me in the right direction, I will be most
appreciative.  Trying to understand computer things is hard for me, and often
times unsuccessful.  Please just smile and don't laugh, I'll bet you can't take
shorthand or bake Dutch cookies, either!  Looking forward to some instructions,
if you have the time, with many regards, Gerda May.

  • Tried to Copy Files Into Home Folder

I tried to drag all the folders into my Home Folder to clean things up. I copied my Pictures Folder, my Documents Folder, my Music Folder, my Movies Folder into the Home folder.
Is there some place to read about what should be where and how to start to clean up my duplications and alias's
I would like to thank you in advance for your help with this matter.

I am sorry for the confusion...I don't know the correct terminology.
I am calling the finder window the 'dock' and what is the dock I call the docking station.
You are correct. I copied everything into the home folder trying to clean up the finder window
So my trouble is with the Finder
(this is what I see in the first column of the finder window after the list of hard drives on my system)
    Desktop
    Home Folder (whg2000)
Documents (info says it is folder but wierd icon/logo - not a folder with a picture in it)
Applications (with the A logo icon not the folder Icon) (inside this folder is all my apps but also an alias of the applications folder but when I highlight this alias I have a duplicate of all the contents of the applications folder)
Library Folder (with the library logo icon on the folder)
Pictures (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Music (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Sites (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Public (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Movies (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
(and then if I click on the home folder this is what I have inside my home folder)
Bill-Work-Folder (folder where I keep all my stuff)
Burn Folder (with burn logo / icon)
    Desktop
Documents ( folder with the active logo icon....the contents of this folder match the contents of the documents folder on the dock)
    home certify.txt (not a folder)
Library Folder (with the library icon/logo)
(and then this is what is in my Trash folder which is in the bottom of the dock, I had dragged stuff into the trash in attempt to clean it up)
    Sites Folder
    Public Folder (withthe logo/icon)
Pictures Folder (just fodler no icon/logo)
Movies Folder (with movies logo /icon)
Music Folder (with music logo / icon)
I hope this can still be fixed and cleaned up, thank you

  • Duplicate iTunes database files in Home Folder

Due to an ever-increasing number of songs in iTunes, I downloaded them to an external hard drive -relatively easily(with a lot of help) and successfully for the most part. But....
In order to trash my iTunes Music on the internal drive I had to re-organize the sub-files found in the iTunes file(path - Home>Music>iTunes>). All of the iTunes database files were in the iTunes Music file so I dragged them out and put them in the iTunes file. After I trashed all the music, by highlighting the songs and dragging them to the trash bin, the iTunes Music file(which should be empty) has ‘re-created’ the iTunes database files.
The iTunes seems to work fine. All newly added music is stored on the external hard drive and downloads to my iPod. However now my iTunes window crashes consistently and my external hard drive gets disconnected intermittently.
What should I do about the duplicate iTunes database files and is this duplication causing these new problems?

I would happily assign to you 100 points even now
LOL - just clicked 'Solved' on one of my replies when or if you are happy!
Is it possible that when you create a new library the database files also get duplicated
Well, almost. When you create a new Library, you are creating a new iTunes "window" into which you can import any of your music, irrespective of whether it also exists in another library. So, although the music may be the same, iTunes creates a NEW (not duplicate) set of iTunes Library database files for your new Library. The main one (iTunes Library) holds all your playlists, ratings, etc.
That explains why those new files you found inside your iTunes Music folder were all much smaller than the 4 files you moved out - they were new iTunes Library files. (that's what I meant in paragraph 2; the file sizes of the new set were all wrong - way too small; the set you moved out of the iTunes Music folder, were much more realistically bigger.
However, it may be that the CURRENT set of iTunes Library files is on the eHD with your iTunes Music folder, from what you say. Does the iTunes Library file on the eHD have a very recent timestamp on it? If so, that's the one iTunes seems to be using.
Following your directions in paragraph 3 I couldn't find the main iTunes Preferences .plist file
I'm now inclined to believe that your Preferences are not the problem, though I'm baffled as to how you couldn't find the file. The com.apple.iTunes.plist file MUST be there, I'm not sure how iTunes can run without it. And if it wasn't there, iTunes would create it anew when you run the program. You sure you looked in ~user/Library/Preferences ?
then download iTunes from the Apple site
The problems you describe are from a "wrong way of doing things" rather than a corrupt application, so I'd say no to this, right now.
Could I delete or trash parts or all of the iTunes folders and files somewhere along the path, such as after User/Music and on the external hard drive, without jeopardizing the music located on the external hard drive
{sharp intake of breath} - this is ONLY worth doing once we know which is the Library that iTunes is currently using. Certainly, we haven't got to the bottom of why iTunes re-creates those iTunes Library files in your iTunes Music folder.
One way to track down the current Library file is to add one track only to your iTunes, then quit iTunes. Now, drag each of the "iTunes Music Library.xml" onto TextEdit and then do a TextEdit "Find" for that track name. The .xml file that has that track in it, is part of the set currently being used by iTunes and you should note down where that set is.
Will hear from you again, I'm sure.

  • Time machine no longer backs up changes to files in home folder.

My Time Machine seems to be in some sort of weird state where it has stopped backing up any files/folders in my home (~/) folder or below.
This is obviously a big issue since those are the files most needing to be backed up.
It does catch changes to the /Applications folder, the /Developer folder, and the /usr folder, for some examples.
A typical backup where it misses a lot of changes in my home folder is as follows:
Starting standard backup Backing up to: /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.22 GB requested (including padding), 253.01 GB available Copied 20 files (157 bytes) from volume . Starting post-backup thinning Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-09-11-185523: 253.01 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-09-07-124935: 253.05 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-10-03-205432: 253.05 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-10-03-205215: 253.05 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-10-03-204044: 253.05 GB now available Post-back up thinning complete: 5 expired backups removed Backup completed successfully.
And looking at it in TimeTracker it just shows a lot of 0 byte backups, with the occasional backup with only changes to the above-mentioned folders visible.
How can I reset Time Machine and get it back on track?
I'd like to preserve the current backups on it if possible.

    Are you running File Vault?
Besides your TM disk, what's shown in the +Do not back up+ box in TM Preferences > Options?
If nothing there would prevent your home folder from being backed-up, try a "full reset" per #A4 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
