Question about placing Photoshop images in Illustrator

Hi
Someone asked me for advice because they are trying to place a Photoshop image in Illustrator.
Is this a good idea?
It's unknown whether they are trying to Livetrace the image, Or just leave it sittin' pretty, so they can sketch around it and have it visible as a "placed" image before they export it to InDesign.
I don't think that they want to live trace it, i think they just want to put the image there so they can see it as they work.
What are the options?
Can these photoshop items in Ai become linked like they do in InDesign without any problems?
From what i hear it is not a good idea to "place" Photoshop images in illustrator, without live tracing them, because everything in Ai needs to be vector anyway.
thanks for any advice

>havent you noticed that whenever you live trace and expand a color image, it becomes thousands (sometimes tens of thousands) of separate vectors and consequently becomes very hard to move and work with?
Which is a very good reason not to do that.
>How do you just place the image in illustrator as sort of a placeholder image or linked image (non embedded) and work with it quickly as part of an Ai sketch, without needing to vectorize everything upfront? (by that i mean live trace/ expand
File> Place. Done.
>I've never seen someone trying to use raster images in Ai like it was a normal everyday thing.
You need to get out of the house more. It is done all the time.

link a Photoshop image to Illustrator, the value of the colours in the image change.
saving the file as an EPS for print, the colour is still wrong. However, if embed the image, the colour values change to what they should be, their value as they were in Photoshop.
Then saved EPS file, and all the colours are correct.
I have tried different colour settings, The problem while linking the images. If I embed it, .
    How to fix it........................

  • Placing Photoshop file in Illustrator CS5 - why doesn't it work?

I frequently place Photoshop files into Illustrator CS3 without issue.... the PS file places right into the file with transparent surroundings.
I just upgraded to CS5 and for some reason, I "Place" the Photoshop file, but nothing shows up in Illustrator.  I must not have a preference set correctly.
    Can you help?
    Thanks.

Hi Matthew - thanks for taking the time to check this issue out for me.
I have just uninstalled Illustrator CS5, because I need to get things done - and reverted back to CS3..... however, I did duplicate a file to demonstrate what I'm doing.
I created a sample file with a very simple, non-descript  green vector shape.... then, In Photoshop, I created a yellow image that says Photoshop Placed File.  I gave it a dropshadow...
I then went back to Illustrator and selected 'File/place'..... and selected the photoshop file described above.  I then placed it on top of the green vector image in Illustrator CS3 and it layed on top fine - with NO white box around it as a jpg would do.  PLUS, the black dropshadow fades nicely over whatever image color you place it upon.... it 'gradually' lets the vector color below it show through as the fade diminishes to 0%.
NOW - I tried to 'place' a file into Illustrator CS5 in this same manner.... and I get absolutely nothing!  The Raster photoshop image doesn't even show up in Illustrator CS5.  This is where I was at when I started the topic.
    Any ideas??

  • Placing large images in Illustrator CS5 - Crash

    Hello.
I'm producing an artwork, working in high resolutions.
The new artboard functions in Illu CS5 is really great for my purpose, but when placing my
photoshop images (around 25K x 15K), Illustrator crashes almost every time.
The only format, that doesn't make it crash, is Photoshop EPS.
But that won't let me keep my transparancy (PSD or TIFF without transparancy also crashes).
I could split up the images, but still think it's really strange, this should be nescessary.
Thx for any advice / explanation
    Morten

There could be two resons for this:
The size of the image you are placing is larger than the canvas size i.e approx  16300 * 16300 pt
Another could be the memory related, i.e the Ai is hitting the limits..
Try placing the file after reducing the dimensions..

  • How can I transfer a Photoshop image to Illustrator without it being pixelated?

I originally created an image in Illustrator and transfered it to Photoshop so i can change the hues. Now I want to take that Photoshop file and transfer it back to Illustrator but the the edges on the object are very jagged and rough whilst the object in Photoshop is smooth and the transition of gradients is smooth.

  • Placing Photoshop files in Illustrator CS5 results in wrong percentages of spot colors?

When placing a native PSD file into Illustrator CS5 that includes different percentages of spot colors they will be different than what was specified in Photoshop. The spot colors are overlaying CMYK to create a see thru look.
For example if the spot color is 40% it will end up being 16%. 100% will stay at 100%, but any other percentage will be different than what is entered in Photoshop.
We are able to see the difference when creating a PDF or when the file is output to our high end printer. It can also be visually seen when putting an Illustrator CS4 and and Illustrator CS5 side by side.
I can take the same PSD file and place it into Illustrator CS4 and it retains the percentage that is entered in Photoshop. All percentages match the percentages that are entered in Photoshop when a PDF is created or printed to our printer.
I have tried saving the PSD file out as a Tiff file and a DCS2.0 file and get the same results in Illustrator CS5.
Is there a bug in Illustrator CS5 or should we handle our Spot Color Scans a different way? We never had this issue with any previous version of Illustrator.
Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Mike,
I understand what your saying but I should have mentioned that the Spot Colors are actually overlaying the CMYK in Photoshop not in Illustrator CS5. When this scan gets placed in Illustrator the Spot Colors values are different. There is no art below the scan in Illustrator. Hope this makes it a little clearer on what were trying to do.
Also remember that it works just fine in any version of Illustrator before CS5.
    Thanks

  • Colour change when placing Photoshop image

Help needed! In Indesign CS4 I have created a template and within the program have made a couple of rectangular boxes filled with 20% black, placed on the master pages. These have text placed over them in the main pages.
Placing a Photoshop CS4 .psd image in a page of the document, changes the colour of these boxes automatically to a darker colour.- both on screen and printing. If I delete the Photoshop image, the colour of the boxes changes back to what it's supposed to be. I've checked the fill colour of the boxes with and without the image file being placed and both times it says 20% black.
I've checked the Assign Profile settings in both Indesign and Photoshop and both say sRGB IEC61966-2.1 but never having gone into these settings before, I don't know if that's correct.
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? Thanks.

I will check the Photoshop file to see if this is a problem. As a workaround, I have saved the image as a jpg and placed in the Indesign document and this seems to work fine.
    Thanks for this suggestion.

  • Photoshop Images on illustrator, generate bad PDF Files !

When editing a native illustrator file with linked photoshop images on layers (cuts, paths with transparent background), and we generate a PDF file from any version since 1.4, we got the cuts and /or paths marked with a stroke (line) between the image and the background.
If we generate this file on version 1.3, this problem do not appear, but the images comes completely fragmented, what makes later edition impossible.

    1. Please show screenshots
    2. A PDF is not meant for editing. If you want to edit later, either save an AI file on top or save the PDF with Illustrator editing capabilities (this embeds a fully editable AI file into the PDF, of course making it bigger)
    3. in a PDF 1.3 every transparency gets flattened which causes the fragmentation. Read the documentation on transparency, you'll need it anyway. There's a PDF called
A Designer's Guide to Transparency for Print Output
    4. PDF version has to be selected carefully depending only on the demands of whoever prints or displays it afterwards.

  • Question about ZEN 4 imaging

We are using ZENWorks 4 imaging (with IR5) and have been using the documents about automating the imaging process. The question that I have is when the workstation it reimaged and reboots, ZENWorks agent comes up with the windows that indicates that it is making changes to the computer and states not to log in till the machine reboots. I believe it is taking the ZIS information and putting this information back into the workstation. (workstation name etc). On windows 2000 the machine reboots without any problems when this process is complete. With Windows XP the machine does not seem to reboot. If the workstation is manually rebooted everything works fine. I have found that if the workstation is left for about 10 minutes, it will actually reboot on its own. Is there a way to have this reboot occur more quickly?

Didn't know that this could be done. Where do I make those changes.
    Thanks.

yes... you could disable the feature that you are directly able to login
    without pressing ctrl-alt-del
on the other side I just had wks this week who rebooted itself without this
    directly...

  • Placed Photoshop Images

I'm sure this question has been asked many times and I'm sorry if I am repeating a post that has already been answered.
    My problem is this:
When I place a Photoshop PSD file into my InDesign CS4 document, all the other images on that particular page appear to go lighter.
When I print the document or export to PDF - the page containing the placed PSD does indeed come out lighter.
When you delete the PSD image off the page, you literally see all the images on that page return to their true brightness.
Any suggestions would be gratefully welcome.
    Thank you
    Jonathan

There is a greyscale JPEG (have also tried using a greyscale EPS and TIFF) and a greyscale PSD.
All images are Greyscale with Black & White ICC
When I place the greyscale jpeg on the page, it looks fine. As soon as I place the greyscale PSD, the jpeg becomes lighter. If you delete the PSD, the jpeg goes back to it's true appearance.
I have tried working in a fresh document and re-saving the image files in case something has become corrupt.
Another route I have tried is copying the greyscale file into a blank CMKY file and placing the greyscale image solely on the black channel. The black channel looks fine but then when you click on the composite channel - the image appears lighter.
It appears I am going to have to go 'old skool' and created the whole page layout in Photoshop!!
I have been using Photoshop and InDesign for years - I'm at a loss to why I'm suddenly not getting the results I desire
    I appreciate your help.
    Regards
    Jonathan

  • Question about adjusting an image to compensate for an alpha black overlay

I don't know how accurate that title/question is but please hear me out and I'l explain it as best I can.
There is a touchscreen monitor in my car.
It allows custom background wallpapers to be loaded via USB.
The touchscreen automatically adds what would appear to be about a 25% alpha black layer in FRONT of the image so the touchscreen controls and icons are clearly visible.
The problem is, I don't know what values I'm supposed to adjust on my image in order to get it to look the same way it does on my computer screen.
Would you adjust the brightness?  Contrast?  Tint?  A combination of all of them?
Or is this simply not possible because the ~25% alpha black tint is placed OVER the wallpaper?
I'd really appreciate some advice.  I don't mind tinkering with the values and using trial and error but I don't want to waste my time if this simply isn't possible.

Just so it's clear, you're not going to be able to "brighten it up" so it looks just like the original - at least not completely so.  An image can only be as bright as bright white.  If that has been reduced by an overlay, you're not going to be able to make the original image "brighter than white" so as to compensate.  Maybe someday, when HDR image formats are common...
The car is darkening the image on purpose in order to make the locations of the controls more obvious.  I can't imagine why you'd want such a busy image as a background, since it makes the actual controls difficult to find.
I read an article today that says that testing has shown that automotive touch screens distract drivers as much as a 0.08 blood alcohol level.  And you're wanting to make it more difficult to find those controls.
Whatever you do, please be careful.

  • Photoshop images into Illustrator

I want to use a shape created in Photoshop with a style applied. When I bring it into Illustrator, apply Live Trace, the style disappears.
How can I keep the style intact?

    Thak you Grant,
Just to confirm that I am proceeding correctly - I created the image in Photoshop, converted the layer with the object to smart object, placed it into Illustrator.
My observation is that the object does retain the appearance I need, but I can't select the object, as in Expand in Live Trace or Direct Seclect or Selection tool.
I will be using this image as a logo that I will be needing in a variey of sizes.
Any other tips you have for me?

  • Question about changing ID3 images

Hey everyone. I recently changed my podcast artwork. I use Powerpress, so changing the MAIN artwork was quite easy. So for this question, I am referencing only the individual art that is displayed with each individual episode.
I know that for iTunes to recognize a change in episode artwork, that it cannot have the same name as the previous. The new artwork embedded does have a new name but is it the artwork that needs a different name, or the entire mp3 that needs a new name? Once artwork becomes embedded as ID3 I'm not sure if it loses its name altogether. So I need to know specifically what needs a new name for iTunes to update my episode art? Pic name or mp3 name?
    Thanks for your time!

    Thanks for the response Roger.
So just to be clear, I have changed the images embedded in my MP3s. I then re-uploaded them to Libsyn using the replace function. So I now have MP3s with the exact same name as before, but with a new image embedded. Are you saying iTunes will see the image change in each episode even though the name of my MP3 is exactly the same?
So far, iTunes has immediately updated my main podcast image but all my individual episodes still have the old image.
You can probably see what I'm talking about by searching iTunes for Netflix Junkies. You'll see that 'episodes' has different artwork than 'podcasts' in the search results. Do I just need to wait it out? Or rename my mp3s?
Keep in mind, there is another podcast with the same name no artwork. This is not my podcast but someone else's.
    Thanks again!

  • Question about printing an image/control Using Report Generator

The attached VI is an example of creating a report from a control or image. My problem is that when the control (xy graph) gets too large in the vertical direction it clips the image but, the horizontal is scaled to the width of the report.
First question is why does it scale in the horizontal and not the vertical? See the Test.pdf for what I am talking about.
Second, is it possible to control this behavior (edit/create an alternate for the Append Control Image to report or the Report VI's)?
I have found many work around but ultimately it comes back to; why automatically scale one direction but not the other?
For this application I don't mind that the graph is scaled down in the horizontal I just wish it would do the same thing in the vertical axis (I don't even want it to be a 1 to 1 zoom ratio, just fill the avalible report space).
    Thoughts?

I agree all of the workarounds have limitations. One workaround, that I'm not sure if you have tried yet is change the numeric constant from 50 to 20 (I attached a picture showing which constant I am talking about). This seems to fix the issue just because the image never becomes larger than the report page itself.
Let me know if that option creates any problems for you as well.

  • Simple question about .PNG/transparent images

I had to do a bit of work on a transparent image that will sit on a black background. I noticed that once I put the image on it's background a bit some layer mask editing I did are showing up...this is where I didn't quite mask everything correctly. My question- is there a way to check my image with-in PhotoShop on a black background before I Save As a PNG?
    Thanks

If you use File...Save for Web and choose the "PNG-8" option, you can select the matte colour to use:
