Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!
To learn how to stay safe (with or without anti-virus software), and how to decide whether to use anti-virus software, see my Mac Malware Guide.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X has got its own security systems, so you don't need any antivirus. Furthermore, they will only slow down your computer. If you want more information, read > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
If you want an antivirus, install ClamXav, but you don't need an antivirus

I find the speed and space in my macbook pro is not enough for me anymore. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Hitachi 750gb/7200rpm hard drive? I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro (15 inch, 2.93 ghz C2D, 4gb ram) running osx Lion and was wonder about compatibility with said drive.

Hi, my wifi button just greyed out a few minutes ago and I can't connect to wifi. Have followed instructions given by Apple support but it's still not working. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks & Happy New Year :-)

First, you don't have a 5+ year old 3GS. The 3GS has only been around for under 4 years. In fact, 5 years ago there were NO iPhones; the original iPhone (2 generations before the 3GS) came out on June 29, 2007 - not quite 5 years ago. The 3GS was released June 19, 2009.
That aside, you can sync multiple phones to one computer - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495. boogeyman is wrong. It is 100% safe to create an additional user name on her computer, log in with that name, and back up the phone. See this for details on what you want to do: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109

I need to make a stop start animation using iMovie. I need the time factor to be 0.03. Every time I make an adjustment it goes to 0.1s which is too slow. Does anyone have a suggestions?

First, for Stop Motion Animation, there are better tools. These include iStopMotion and QuickTIme Pro Version 7.
If you want to do it in iMovie, it is possible, but slow.
First, go into iMovie Preferences, and make sure you check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames". This will let you edit to the frame lever rather than to the nearest 10th of a second.
Second, see this Tutorial by Jon Walker on how to edit down to a single frame in a still image sequence.
You can modify his technique to get 2 or three frames.

  • I have a great number of Hi8 video tapes and I would like to burn them onto CDs through MacBook Pro (ME665LL/A), but I do not know how to transfer those footage into Mac. What would you recommend?

Hello everybody! My question is; my parents and I have a great number of video tapes (Hi8 and mini DV) and since I purchased a MacBook Pro (ME665LL/A) I would like to burn them onto CDs, but I do not know how to transfer those footage into Mac. What would you recommend(it can be a software, a hardware or combination of both)? By the way, I also purchased an external DVD-RW(Asus SDRW-08D2S) separately.

Just Google "convert hi8 to dvd" and you'll find a number of software/hardware combinations that will allow you to do what you want. One important piece of the puzzle is whether or not you still have access to the video recorder(s) that the movies were shot on.
    Good luck,

  • I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2. My problem is I can't search on an external network server for a file with the finder toolbar anymore. Nothing shows up and it will not search. I was able to in snow-leopard and am no longer able to w. Lion. Suggestions?

I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2.
My issue is that I am not able to run a search in the finder toolabar on a network server. No files show up nor does it search on the server anymore. I was able to run the search in snow-leopard and am no longer able to do so with Lion. Is there a preference I can change or some kind of app or program I can download that will help me with this issue? This is extremely problematic for me as I am searching for files all day everyday. Thank you!

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Do i need to get an anti virus program for my mac mini

do i need to get an anti-virus software?

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Whats the best Mal-ware and anti virus program that will check all of programs and see if there's anything hanging around from surfing

    asdaa

I will dissent. For a one time scan you could run Sophos. It will probably only pick up something meant for Windows, if at all, and it may throw a false positive at you, so don't be in a hurry to delete anything. I see you're running 10.8, which has some built in protection, but since it's an '09, you probably migrated stuff over from an earlier OS or Mac and it's also possible you weren't (or haven't been) observing safe browsing techniques, so it may find something genuine.
    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition.aspx
For the Sophos forum in order to get more help, if needed.
    http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/MacTalk/ct-p/FTT_MAC
When done, you can leave it if it's not causing any problems (but not set to auto scan) or uninstall it.
    http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Removing-Sophos-An ti-Virus-for-Mac-Home-Edition/td-p/37/page/7
And don't let any A-V allow you to become complacent. It's only going to find something already catalogued, but it won't find any brand new threats.
Also, make sure you do not run Java (not JavaScript) in the browser. (Or just don't install the plugin, to begin with.) That would be asking for big trouble. Java is buggy and relentlessly exploited by malware.
Also, pay attention to updates in all your most used applications, Flash included.

  • I have Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and would like it to recognize text.  Does anyone know how to do this?

Our administrator upgraded my computer and Adobe Acrobat now looks different.  Prior to that, I used the tool tab that was in the upper right hand corner for text recognition.  This new version does not have those tabs and I do not see the text option anywhere.  I'm not sure what version I had before but now it is Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.  Can anyone help with this?

Thank you for the reply, I have figured this out:
If you’re unable to select text, the text may be part of an image. In Acrobat, to export image text to text that can be selected, choose Document > OCR Text Recognition > Recognize Text Using OCR

Try installing Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7 in Lion.  Here are some PowerPC applications running concurrently with Lion:

  • Anyone had any experience with the Samsom C01u?

I've been seeing this microphone about but I'm hearing distressing reports on its compatibility with Macs. Any first-hand users?
    G5 2.3 mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It's the convenience issue that interests me most. My daughter is a flautist and she likes to record her practice sessions onto her laptop so she may analyze them afterward. Setting up a condenser mic and a preamp and a phantom power source becomes cumbersome (and her mother complains about the spaghetti tangle of cables and interfaces in her practice room/guest room). She'd like something that doesn't require a recording engineer to be on hand. She doesn't want to make professional quality recordings. The quality of the recording should be good enough, however, where it might be used as an audition.

  • Should i run an anti virus program on my IMAC

I just got hacked into my imac last week i was running norton 360 as well but it didn't catch the thief. Does anyone here use antivirus? I did a total scan and it didn't pick up my issue so i did a total wipe off of mac and starting all over again. I am scared afther that happened, looking for other imac users advice. Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
We don't recommend any antivirus for OS X because they are useless (specially, commercial antiviruses like Norton). If you want to install an antivirus, install Sophos or ClamXav. See > http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg
As you were hacked, instead of installing an antivirus, you may want to install Little Snitch > http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html This app allows you to control all processes between your iMac and the Internet, and viceversa, so you have a total control over your Internet connection. If you find a strange process, just deny it. This is the best way to prevent hacks. Also, it's good to increase the security of your router (for example, using a WPA2 password, MAC filters...)
