Question mark is now a green circle

Hi all, I am so confused. Somebody started appearing as a question mark, which meant to me that they had unfriended me and possibly also blocked me. I sent them friendship requests and maybe they didnt even see them, as they had unfriended and blocked me.Today, the question mark is gone and i see a green circle in its place. When I click on their profile, I can see it and I am not being prompted to send a friend request. Does this mean they re-friended me, in which case I would have received a message saying SoandSo has accepted friendship details, right? I don't understand why I see a green circle, while they had unfriended me and afterwards I never saw the message that they have accepted friendship details. Can anyone help? If I see a green circle it means we are friends, how did it become a green circle after the question mark, without me seeing a message that they accepted my friend details? and am I still blocked or not? Thanks.

Hi,
It sounds like what you saw was a temporary syncing issue with the central stored contact list. Your client got the wrong indication that you had lost contact authentication with that friend of yours. Once that sync completed correctly again in the follow up you saw the green checkmark again. And that's why there also wasn't and additional "contact request accepted" entry in the conversation. Sorry for the confusion caused by this.

Press the power button down to force a emergency use only hardware shutdown.
Press and hold the Option/alt key on the built in keyboard, boot the machine.
If MacintoshHD appears, select it and click the arrow, then in System Preferences > Startup Disk reset that. Done.

  • Help. iMac flashing question mark, and now power loss at startup.

Hey. I've had some really weird issues with my iMac. It's a 2.8 core 2 extreme aluminium 2007 iMac. It was bought for me at the end of august 2007.
What happened was, I was watching a movie and it started freezing. Everything was so slow. So I turned it off by the mains since it wouldn't shut down. When I tried booting it back up it had the flashing question mark. So I read up on it and tried doing what the apple support website recommended, which was to put the install disc back in and use the disk utility to repair the disk. Except this wouldn't work and it said the hard disk could not be unmounted. So I read up again and apple recommended resetting the PRAM, which I did and then it wouldn't recognise the hard drive AT ALL. But after a few tries of booting up it found it again, I got on disk utility and still said the same thing when I tried to repair. So I repaired the permissions instead and restarted and the computer booted as normal. But then was still very slow and freezing. So I opened disk utility one more time and tried repairing permission, restarted the computer and now when it gets to the apple logo and the loading icon it looses power and goes blank. I've already tried resetting the SMU. it didn't work. Has anybody got ANY clue to what I can do? Is my waranty up? I don't have AppleCare. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have an Intel iMac, it has an SMC not an SMU, so if you used the procedure that says "SMU" on it, you used the one for an iMac G5, which is not an Intel iMac.
Since you did many different things in a somewhat random order, you may want to do the following, even if you did some of it already.
    Reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
which is basically disconnecting ALL cables and power, then reconnecting using a precise procedure. If you have been connecting the power cord to a crowded or old power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it directly to the wall outlet, at least initially. First, power it up with nothing connected, except for power cord. If that works, add just your keyboard/mouse and use it that way for a while to evaluate how the iMac is working. If all is well, connect your other peripheral (USB/FireWire) devices one by one. If the problem does recur at some point, identify the device added last; it may be faulty or causing some kind of interference.
If the problem remain, even when trying to start up the iMac with nothing but power cord connected, connect just your keyboard/mouse. Insert your Mac OS X installation disc (for the currently installed system) and restart with the C key held down. Sounds like you did this already. You should note if the iMac is running normally when booted off the installation disc. If so, the problem may be your internal drive; it may be faulty. Run Disk Utility from Installer's menu bar, and try to do a +Repair Disk+ again. See if it works any better this time.
You can also try using the Apple Hardware Test, including on your original disc(s)

  • My Mac Apple Pro laptop is getting old - anyway, when I turn it on now, the screen just lights up white - and nothing is happening.  A few days ago, I had a screen with a flashing question mark, but now just blank white. what to do/how to fix it?

My Mac pro notebook laptop - when i turn it on, it's just a lit up white screen - and nothing else is happening - it's just frozen. how do i fix it?

You may try the procedures in this support article.  I suspect a trip to the Apple genius bar will be the best option.  You probably have some hardware issues, such as the display or the GPU and the technicians will be to make to make a definitive determination.

  • White screen of death w/ question mark folder & cd in drive

Ok, so i left my MacBook running overnight downloading off of Limewire and I woke up to it not responding to anything. A restart left me with the white screen of death and then eventually showed the folder with a question mark. Now i know i can put my installation disk in but there is already a disk in the computer and it will not eject. What do I do?

ok, i finally reset some pmv...thing. i forget the name. anyways, the disk came out, and i have the question mark folder to deal with now. only catch, the install disk is at home & i'm at school. anyway to deal with this without a disk?
p.s. thank you for getting back to me so soon.

  • HT2452 Folder with a question mark

My iMac powered on with a folder with a question mark. Now it just clocks when you turn it on and does nothing

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It looks like the hard drive is damaged. Follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD that came with the Mac, and press C key while your Mac is starting.
    2. When the disc has started, go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD on the sidebar and verify the disk.
    3. If it shows a problem, repair the disk. If it can't be repaired, take the Mac to an Apple Store to get the hard drive repaired.
If you bought your iMac between October 2009 and July 2011, you must know that there are some iMacs with defective 1 TB Seagate hard drives, and Apple is replacing those hard drives for free. Check if your iMac is eligible > http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive

  • Question Mark for FIrefox Icon in Dock

I needed to reinstall my operating system today--I had some issues when I was doing some updating.
I got everything back and it's running just fine now, however, instead of my Firefox icon in the dock, I have a question mark there now. If I click on it, Firefox opens just fine, and if I put my mouse over it, it tells me it's Firefox so it is useable--it's just that it would be nice to have the icon there instead of a question mark. I also have a question mark there for MSN Messenger but I'm not really that concerned about that missing icon.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Items it the Dock are just short cuts or aliases to the original item. If the original item gets moved from it's original location then you will get a question mark because the alias in the dock is no longer correct. Check and see if Photobooth is still in your Applications folder and if it is still there then do what was said above. Drag the question mark out of the dock and drag the original Application back to the dock creating a new dock alias for it.

  • Terminal input becomes a question mark

Everyone's entitled to post a stoopid question - Here's mine:
    This happened once before:
I hit a key on my 101 keyboard and the Terminals cursor changed to a "?"
I have restarted the Terminal app and even logged in an out (with Remote Desktop) and any character I type is converted to a "?".
I can't remember how I got out of it before... short of rebooting - which seems to be a bit much...
    Anyone got a clue?

    Hi Tim,
I apologize; it's difficult to tell if a person is a newbie from one post and I've found it efficient to err on the side of newbieness. Also, when you said
    > any character I type is converted to a "?"
I thought you were saying that the character echoed back was a question mark. As Joe says, that is rather common. It simply didn't occur to me that the cursor itself would become a question mark. I apologize I didn't know what the help key did.
I can search though and I found the following in TextMate Blog » Key bindings for switchers:if you click the Help key, the mouse pointer turns into a question mark, and now the next mouse click is “special” in that it requests help for the clicked item. Thus, the "help" keystroke should be trapped by the local machine and it is supposed to interpret the next mouse click as a request for help.
You didn't mention Remote Desktop before. The GUI part of that is VNC under the hood and Apple didn't write the protocol. I can't say that I'm surprised that there's a bug in such platform specific behavior.
Now that we have some idea of the complexity of what you're doing, it's clear that we can't know exactly what is happening. However, I don't think that the help "feature" would be handled by the terminal application. I would guess that it's handled at a lower level and would expect it to be handled by the client OS. Thus I'm naturally surprised that this effects your server but maybe for some unknown reason VNC transmits the "help" keystroke and your server's GUI is waiting for a mouse click that it isn't getting. Maybe you could plug a USB mouse into the box and click on something. If you hit the help key again, you might as well try all you can in search of a workaround.

Try starting up with your Snow Leopard DVD and see if the disk can be repaired. Once you are at the installer screen go to the Utilities Menu and choose Disk Utility and choose repair disk. You might also want to try Diskwarrior.
    Hope this helps.

  • Black Screen, Grey Screen, then flashing question mark, now frozen....

    hi everyone,
i know i have probably the most common problem - and i've tried to read all about the logic board problems which i'm fairly certain i have.
I realize i will most likely have to buy a new macbook - but before i do - i need to retrieve files that are on my ibook g3 (bought in early 2003).
This is what has happened in the past 2 days:
    1. I can hear the power start up (and chimes) but screen is completely black.
    2. Tried resetting PRAM and PMU, now blank grey screen sometimes appears.
    3. Now, grey screen with flashing question mark in the middle alternating with mac face. So i assumed this meant it couldn't locate my hard drive. So i found my ibook install disc and inserted it and restarted while holding down "C" key.
    4. Grey screen - with Apple (thought this was success) - then it turned to a large grey circle with a line through it (a slash). And then suddenly frozen.
Since then it has just been a lot of lines through the screen alternating with completely grey screen, etc. along with any of the above-mentioned outcomes. I tried pushing on the lower-left-hand corner of the computer and yes, it affects the display - more or less lines, etc.
How can i get my old files off of it? Do i buy a new macbook and connect them via fire wire cable and try that way? or will that not work if the above is happening? Or is it possible for someone (myself or perhaps IT professionals) to remove the hard drive from my old ibook and place it somewhere where i can copy over the files?
Any help is appreciated - i know this is a popular topic - i've just had so many weird outcomes in the past 2 days i'm not exactly sure which solution (if any) would work for me right now.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi Ronda -
I do have access to another mac (mini) with firewire at my work. Or I might go out and buy a new macbook this weekend as well (preferable since I don't really want my personal files on my work computer, etc.) But yes, i need to get my old files off of this one.
I have never added additional memory or anything to it really since I got it. So it should be the original specs:
    iBook (14.1 LCD 900 MHz 32 VRAM)
    256MB memory
    Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
    Hard drive: 40GB
Not a lot of space was remaining if i recall. I did get the 'disk full' notice a few weeks ago, but i did end up deleting a lot of stuff. Needless to say, i'm sure it was quite full, but not at maximum when this happened.
Update: Last night i tried to start it up again, and it would ONLY go to a black screen this time (ie. no display at all). What do you think i should do?

  • I've got a 15" white macbook which I bought about 2 years ago. It froze the other day and wouldn't respond so I shut it down. When I turn it on now it comes up with a flashing file with a question mark on it. How can I fix it?

I've got a 15" white macbook which I bought about 2 years ago. It froze the other day and wouldn't respond so I shut it down. When I turn it on now it comes up with a flashing file with a question mark on it. How can I fix it? I've tried a few things i've seen online but the futhest ive got is to put the start up disk in when you makes it go to a grey screen with an apple logo and the spinning wheel which then stops spinning. Can anybody help?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once.It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left handlist. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Folder with Question Mark on Start-up/ DOS-like screen with errors now...

Left my Mac Pro running last night, woke up to it being frozen (looked like it was
in hibernation mode and wouldn't wake up).
Forced a shut down from button on tower - on start-up, went gray screen
with blinking folder with question mark.
Inserted install disc 1 and held down 'C' - Went to choose your lang menu,
I picked English, went to choose start-up disc. Options were the install
disc and a network drive with a question mark. I picked drive with
    question mark.
Computer looked like it was trying to restart, apple with loading circle
spinning, and then blinked to a black screen that looked like DOS that was
blinking error messages (one message was "diskOs2 undefined Oxe0030005")
    Any suggestions?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Was there a storm or outage that could have brought it down? for now it sounds like a kernel panic screen is what you are seeing. If you don't have a UPS, I wouldn't be w/o. Never know when one of those high winds will knock out power.
You could try to do an SMC Reset and see.
I assume you usually sleep the system and it doen't have trouble with wake from sleep, and you haven't altered the system (new hardware etc) in any way that would change that.

  • There are question marks on each directory although the Folder name is green

Hi, I have just upgraded to Lightroom version: 3.5 [775451]. When I opened Lightroom it's not able to find my pictures which are stored on a NAS. I have had this problem before, so I don't believe it has anything to do with the upgrade. On the folder name it looks like Lightroom can see my NAS because the small square is green, but for each folder below there is a question mark. When I Ctrl click on one picture and select Show in Finder, it's saying that the original file could not be found. It show the previous location which is still the correct location. CLicking on the Locate a Finder window opens and I can now see a new directory (folder) with the same name as my NAS drive has, and there is of course no pictures in that folder. Where did this new folder comes from with the same name as my NAS ?
    I appriciate all help.
    Thank you
    Cheers

I'm pretty sure the problem lies somewhere else, because I see it happen in other programs also (i.e. iTunes, simple batch scripts, ...). It might be a shortcoming of some API used in these programs.

  • What does the white question mark in a black circle mean in the itunes wind

I have copied from my old PC my itunes music folders into my new PC. All my music and podcasts now have a white question mark in a black circle next to each line in the first column on the window. When I try to add music to my new nano i can only do this if I first play the song/podcast, this makes the question mark disappear.
Is there a way I can 'uncheck' all these question marks without having to go into each item?
I have not yet tried to sync my old Ipod photo.

  • Grey folder with question mark or circle w line when attempting start up

Whenever I attemp to start up my iMac intel based computer, I either get a blinking grey folder with a question mark in it, or after a while, I get a circle with a line through it. I've tried holding the shift button down as advised when starting up and also holding shift command v and I've tried holding the command option pr buttons down as well and none of these seem to reolve the issue. Is there anything I can do to help resolve this? It was working just fine last night, but now I can't get it to boot up. Unfortunatley, I do not have the install disks for this as I bought it from a friend last year and she lost them. Please help!!
    Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*"blinking grey folder with a question mark in it,"* Possible hard disk failure.
    Try here ...
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
    *"shift command v "*
I'm not familiar with that startup key combo at all.
Without your install disks you can't repair the hard disk if necessary. You can obtain new disks.
If you no longer have your Leopard Install DVD, you may be able to obtain it from Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-767-2775.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -
    http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html
You will need the above in order to run the *Repair Disk* option.
