Question on exporting out to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

I am trying to conform footage to my Easy Setup in Final Cut Pro and for some reason, it won't. My Easy Setup is based on the DV/DVCPRO - NTSC setup with the aspect ratio being 720x480. When I export the footage out, it gives me 720x480 (640x480). That's fine.
So I switch it to NTSC 720x480 4:3 and it still exports out as 640x480.
I try the custom option and type in 720x480 and it still exports out as 720x480.
What am I doing wrong? Is it trying to conform the aspect ratio to what the original video size is? Thanks.

What am I doing wrong? Is it trying to conform the aspect ratio to what the original video size is?
You are confusing the rectangular pixel encoding matrix (720x480) with the square pixel display dimensions (640x480). You must remember that DV was historically developed as a broadcast compression format to more closely reflect the rectangular pixel presentation of older CRT televisions having 720x480 rectangular pixels to display the equivalent of a 640x480 square pixel image.
So I switch it to NTSC 720x480 4:3 and it still exports out as 640x480.
I'm not quite sure what you saying you want to do here. If you were to display 720x480 rectangular pixels on a square pixel device (e.g., a computer monitor, HDTV, etc.), then at 720x480 square pixels the image would look somewhat squat with people and objects looking shorter and fatter than they should be because you have changed the aspect ratio from 4:3 (640x480) to 720x480 which would then have an actual square pixel aspect ratio of 1.5:1 (or 3:2) rather than 4:3.
As an aside, a 16:9 anamorphic DV file would also encode to the same 720x480 data matrix but (as long as the flag is not lost) actually play back at either 640x360 or approximately 853.3x480 depending on the application in use and you would see an entry of 720x480 (853x480) or 720x480 (640x360) on the player Inspector or Info window.
So, unless you are saying that your file has lost its anamorphic value (which can happen in some workflows), it sounds as if everything is working correctly.

  • Few questions on exporting out with fce 3.5 for web distribution

    Hello I have been trolling here for a few months reading up on things and I know my way around a search pretty well I have gotten some of these answers from reading but id like to have my own thread so I can keep it all in one place...
    First..
    I run websites that need video's for surfers to be able to view.. these videos are in length from 20 min to 1 hour or longer... now I have figured out that when I render with the h.264 out sorry fce calls it export... I choose the quicktime setting of lan and it seems to be about right for what im used to in high quality from rendering out with pinnacle studio for a wmv or an mpeg.. now heres where I get confused with fce
    I see there is a wmv setting to export to.. but when I do it.. it only exports a bit of it...
    now these are the formats I want for video...
    .mov
    .wmv
    .mpg
    I have compressor but I have no idea on the settings in there and can't find what I need
    in those formats I would like to have a
    high
    med
    low
    as far as quality go's
    can someone help me out so my life is easier please... in fact I have 50 bucks via paypal if I can get someone get my settings down right maybe even in compressor so I just have to edit... this part always messes with my head when it comes down to render out...
    there has to be some editors on here that know excatly what im talking about without having to say it on here... if you want to chat in private you can email me chris (at) themibcorp (dot) com I will give you my ichat name from there maybe you can help me and ill help you with some paypal
    I want the video to play on all forms of computers..
    our's and the other kind.. LOL

    This isn't something someone can decide for you. It's up to you ti make up your mind. Either will do the job. If you want to spend the time to experiment with settings to better suit your media and you know what you're doing and want to spend the money get the more expensive version. If you'll be happy to use the basic presets based on average media and file sizes then get the cheaper version.

  • Compression diff. btw "video" and "DV/DVCpro-NTSC"?

    Hello,
    I would like to export a sequence in FCP as a quicktime file. My source material is mini-Dv NTSC and was captured as such. What is the best compression setting for me to use in export--> using Quicktime conversion, in order for me to retain optimal quality. I guess I would have put compression to "none" but I don't have that option under settings --> compression settings. I am wondering between "video" and "DV/DVCpro-NTSC", I also notice that they take diffrent amount of time to export, does this have anything to do with the quality? I will be outputting to DVCAM and making transfers to BetaSP.
    Thanks alot,
    Lela

    It's really just a habit I got into back when I was having trouble playing back long, heavy composite projects. It worked, and now, because it doesn't usually take alot of time (gotta go out for coffe and a smoke anyway) I still do it.
    As for the archiving. My stuff goes to most clients on Betacam and I do make a DV copy. I just like to keep the show around for a bit, till I'm sure they aren't going to ask for another Betacam copy for a while. So maybe "archive" wasn't the right word.
    Have fun

  • Converting CODECS TO DV-DVCPRO-NTSC

    Need advice on converting formats and compression systems to work in FCE without constant rendering. I'm not sure I understand how this all works. As far as I know in order to work “efficiently” (i.e. without rendering all the time) all clips need to be imported into FCE using MOV format with DV-DVCPRO-NTSC compression.
    I have video from a Canon G-11 digital camera that downloads automatically into iPhoto. When I drag a clip out of iPhoto it’s in MOV format but with a codec of H.264.  To get it into DV-DVCPRI-NTSC compression I have to open QT-7, open the clip then “export” it with options set correctly…then I import the clip into FCE. This is not so bad but I can only do one clip at a time.  I literally have dozens! I must be missing something. Is there a better way or is there a way to batch convert in QT-7?
    I’m using FCE 4.0.1 on a MacBook Pro with OSX10.8.4.  Thanks for any information.

    Thanks MtD and DH,
    Sorry for the delayed response. First, thanks MtD for the tip on Streamclip.  It works!! I can now batch convert. However, I'm embarrassed to admit I do not know what "Are you editing on a DV timeline?" means. I have no idea!. But I guess it doesn't matter since I'm back in business.
    DH, I'm mixing SD video from 1st generation Flip camera with SD from a Canon camera...so no HD. However, I am clicking anamorphic on the item properties screen and using the wide screen format. This may be wrong when I export the final sequence from FCE...but I'm taking a chance it will play properly when I burn it to a DVD.
    Again, thanks to you both.

  • Why are my photos desaturated when I export out of Lightroom 5 and editing with VSCO Film filters?

    I have been excited working with VSCO Film presets, however when I apply them and go to export out of Lightroom 5 on my Windows 8 computer, my images are previewing very desaturated and muted in color. Some images are below. I thought it was a Color SPace issue, but when exported as sRGB as well as in its original space of Adobe RGB1998 it is still desaturated. Any help?? In Lightroom the colors are right, but my preview application is different.
    Thank you!

    Hi ssprengel,
    Here's some clarification:
    Here's a screenshot of my raw image in lightroom without any presets:
    Here is a screenshot of my raw image with the presets (the way I want it to look upon export):
    Here is a of the jpeg exported out of LR:
    (on my screen the jpg looks like what it should when I attach it, but I know once I post this it will not look like it. That's something I noticed when I posted my question previously)
    I took you suggestion and re-imported the sRGB exported JPEG and it looks like how it is supposed to be with the correct saturation. Here's a screenshot of the jpeg reimported.
    Here is a screenshot comparing the LR5 preview to the Photos preview on Windows 8. The LR5 (left) is more saturated, the correct way I want it:
    I cannot use Windows Photo Viewer because this is how my photos look like in it:
    Hope this all makes sense! Thank you so much in advance!

  • Again, ask the question of export parameter.

    Again, ask the question of export parameter.
    I wrote a java version transformation and it worked good with export parameter.
    However I can not work it out in graphical message mapping. I refered http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwpi71/helpdata/en/43/c3e1fa6c31599ee10000000a1553f6/frameset.htm.
    In PI7.1, I add an export parameter "EXPORT_PARA" in the "Signature" tab. Are there any special step to assign this parameter to an UDF? I did not find a way to do it.
    And then I define an UDF,
    public String SetExportPara(String sss, Container container) throws StreamTransformationException{
    String str = "GOOD";
    GlobalContainer gc = container.getGlobalContainer();
    OutputParameters paras= gc.getOutputParameters();
    if(paras.exists("EXPORT_PARA ") == true) {
    paras.setString("EXPORT_PARA ", str);
    }else {
    str = "NOT FOUND EXPORT_PARA";
    return str;
    And I assign this UDF to one element of my output XML, I tried to run it in IE, it always output "NOT FOUND EXPORT_PARA.
    why?????
    I know there is a blog : https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/8654. [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken]

  • Blurry footage when using Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

    I'm working on a 30 second spot that I need to upload to the cable company and they only accept .mov files. It's SD footage. It was shot and is being output as 720x480i. I tried sending them an uncompressed .mov file but they said they couldn't use it (wouldn't open with their conversion system). The guy at the cable company is telling me to use the Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC codec to compress it, but when I use that the footage looks pretty blurry compared to the uncompressed version.
    I even took it home and checked on my Mac, which looked a little better, but still blurry. I tried exporting it using the h.264 codec and it looked better (still not quite as good as the uncompressed, but pretty close). The strange thing is the the h.264 compressed file was only around 50MB while the DV/DVCPRO - NTSC file was around 100MB.
    Is the h.264 codec just that much better that a file can be half the size, but still look better? Or am I just seeing the blurriness because I'm watching them play back on a computer monitor and if I were to send him the DV/DVCPRO - NTSC compressed file it would look fine on TV?

    Well, my guess would be that you're witnessing the artifacts of displaying interlaced video on a progressive display. The DV codec is interlaced by its nature, and your computer screen is progressive by its nature. Typically, interlaced video will not look its best on a computer screen, and that's why you'll always hear recommendations of previewing your interlaced material on a properly calibrated NTSC/PAL display. It's just too difficult to judge problems with interlaced footage on a computer screen.
    I imagine that the difference you're seeing between the DV export and the H.264 export is that the latter was deinterlaced, and therefore looks "better" on a computer screen. That said, it's not going to look good on a television, which is the intended output. And, I'd bet dimes to donuts that your cable company would scream bloody murder if you sent them an H.264 encoded video in an MP4 container--they just won't know what to do with it. Believe me--I've tried. Send them that DV MOV, and your life will be much better :)

  • 16:9 footage is being exported out as 4:3

    I have some DV footage that I shot in 16:9. In FC everything appears to be 16:9, (in the canvas, the file and seq is checked anamorphic), and when I go to the original DV clip ingested with imovie 08, quicktime plays the clip in 16:9. The problem is: when I export my movie out of FC using export quicktime movie and choose curret setting, I get a quicktime movie that shows in 4:3. No piller box, just a narrower (squished) view of my video. I've tried exporting out as DV NTSC anamorphic with same results. My sequence is DV-NTSC anamorphic. Any advise? It seems like most topics on this issue are complaining about the opposite, 4:3 being stretched to 16:9. I'm confused.

  • No Dv/DvcPro- NTSC codecs?

    Hi i apologize if this a stupid question or has been asked before - but what happened to the dv/dvcpro-ntsc codec in Ae CS5?  Has it changed to something else like dv25 or dv50 and i'm just not familiar enough with the codec to know the difference?
    Thanks!

    In previous versions of After Effects, the imprecise names of the codecs as supplied by QuickTime were used. In After Effects CS5, the more precise names of the codecs are presented in the UI. For example, 'DV25' is what is usually meant when people say 'DV codec', even though it's just one of many DV codecs.
    This is also being discussed on this thread:

  • DV/DVCPRO NTSC Compression not working

    When I export a sequence to QT movie using DV/DVCPRO NTSC compression (either directly to a QT movie or using QT conversion) I get what looks like a solarized effect (maybe 6 colors total) and the colors are all off - mostly browns and dark tans with hard lines between them, grainy.
    If I export with no compression, it looks fine.
    It also looks fine in FCP itself during edit and playback, etc.
    If I take this project and clips to another machine, it exports into DV/DVCPRO NTSC with no problem.
    This just started happening. It was working fine for months with the same settings.
    I've tried archive and reinstall the OS system as well as trashing and reinstalling FCP. No change. Using OS 10.4.11, FCP 5.1.4.
    I don't know what else to do other than wipe the drive completely. All suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi Paul
    in your first post you said that exporting without compression was fine, now you say that it also has issues and that exporting on another machine is ok.
    1. Given that you want to go back to tape, export at your sequence settings to maintain quality; actually selecting the same settings as the sequence settings should see no difference in quality. If you are outputting the finished product back to the same tape that the footage originated from there is no need to change codec, you are better to leave it the same.
    2. The fact that the export is seeing problems on one machine and not another suggests that something is wrong on machine one. Trash the prefs for FCP, run some system maintainence on it as well, eg. Disk Utility.

  • ProRes 422 (HQ) QT Export out of FCP getting error on re-import

    The quicktime exports I'm producing out of my FCP system need renders when I drag them back into the project, into a seq. with the same exact settings they had on export. Even if I drag my export into the same sequence it was exported from!
    I'm trying to export a self-contained QT with current settings from a Pro Res 422 (HQ) 1920 x 1080 50i Sequence .
    On creating a new sequence, I select the sequence preset  Apple Pro Res 422 HQ 1920x1080 50i, then cut in the media-- the media is a 90 min Pro Res 422 HQ quicktime from an online house, also 108050i.
    Predictably, no render required. The frame rate, frame size, pixel shape, field, codec match between  the media and the sequence.
    However, if I export  out of that sequence (using File – Export Quicktime; Self-Contained, Current Settings), then re-import the Quicktime and put it back in that same sequence or another new sequence  with the same preset settings, it needs picture render. This is only if my export selection from the sequence is at least a few minutes long. If I set an in and an out for a :30 sec selection and export that quicktime, I can play that back in the sequence with no render.
    The fact that there's some difference between a 90 minute export from my computer and a 30 second export from my computer could be a clue.
    Additional info-- I have tried creating a new sequence with the wrong settings preset to get the  FCP prompt "would you like to conform the sequence settings to match the file?" Then I click yes to conform settings and my quicktime export goes into the sequence-- with a red render bar. But if I then cut in the Pro Res HQ QT from the post house it will not need a render. These two QTs appear identical when I compare their item properties in FCP. On playback, in the viewer window, my export will appear a little stuttery.
    Can anyone tell me what this means and if I can export a quicktime that does not need to be rendered to be played back in FCP?
    Many many thanks!
    I'm running FCP 6.0.5 on a 2 x 2 GHz Quad Core with 11 GB Ram. Mac OS 10.5.6. I have media running off of 2 external drives, connected via eSATA. Drive Speed on the externals-- need to double check.

    The Error I referred to in the title -- I am getting the message "clip settings do not match any sequence presets" when I try to cut my export into a sequence. Seems bizarre because it just came out of a sequence preset, not a custom sequence, using "current settings."

    Have deadline. Didn't see it on any forum. Help!! Thanks!!

    Seems like a weird thing to not be able to do since it's called final cut PRO...
    Bagging on Final Cut Pro for OMF? HA! OMF has been around LONG BEFORE FCP was introduced. It isn't an FCP issue...OMF technology is VERY old. Over 20 years I believe. I used it on Avid...and it always had a 20GB limit.
    You cannot deliver 1 track via OMF. You can ask the audio person. I know that Avid now allows you to export an AAF...but FCP doesn't do AAF. For embedded audio I think that OMF is the only way. SO you have to work within the limitations of that format.

  • Export out of DRM/Import into PeopleSoft

    Hello,
    Do any of you have experience creating an export out of DRM to go into the PeopleSoft system to create trees?  The PeopleSoft system has a Tree Import; however a file needs to be in a certain format for the Import to work.  I wasn't sure if DRM was capable of creating a file in the correct format that PeopleSoft needs or if DRM should just export it's tree data and let the formatting be done by a different tool (ETL, App Designer, etc.).  We are on version 11.1.1.2.103.
    Below is a high-level example of what the Tree Import file should look like.  The 999 lines would be the header lines, and each of the lines underneath the header has a different format (which is fixed-length).
    999TREE_VERSION
    Tree Version Data
    999TREE_STRCT
    Tree Structure Data
    999TREE_DEFN

    Tree Node 3
    Tree Node 4
    Tree Node N
    Tree Detail 5
    Tree Detail N
    Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

    how much i understand below are some points:
    1- for tree format can be used DRM Export option tabbed output(Export-Style-Tabbed output).
    2- For fix length attribute could possible to use Export- Target-Fixed width
    you need to do some workaround to generate file as per peoplesoft requirement. Like Different -2 exports as per 999* header lines to meet requirement , hard code header if needed , club all exports in Book to generate one single file.
    Please explain more on file format so that can try to help you better.
    Thanks!
