Question re: syncing iPhone 4 to a new computer.

Hello everyone-
This may be a silly question, but I just want to make sure I've got all my bases covered before I try this ...
I previously synced my iPhone with a copy of iTunes on my desktop computer. Although the iTunes software was installed on the desktop's "C" drive, *the actual iTunes ITL and database files, along with all the media files, were located on an external hard drive*, "F" -- specifically, under "F:/My iTunes."
My desktop crashed, so I now need to sync with my laptop.
Now, presumably, as long as I ensure that the external hard drive still appears as drive letter "F" on my laptop, there will not be any problems with iTunes reading the library files and linking up all my media.
However, what I'm not so sure about is what will happen when I plug in my iPhone. Will it recognize that this is the same library that I have always synced with, and it won't matter that it's on a different computer? Or, will the fact that it's on a different computer lead to problems for me?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

You will need to authorize the new computer in itunes.
Then, I would follow [these instructions|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2297208]
Hope that helps.

  • When syncing iphone to itunes on new computer, what is erased? Are texts and contacts erased?

I got a new computer and am trying to sync my iphone to it.
I get the message "..this will erase your iphone..."  What is earsed?  I want to think only the itunes related things (apps, music, videos, etc.)
    Are photos erased as well?
    Thank you!

    All content will be removed.
You can get Phoneview from http://ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/ which will allow you to move the iPhone content to the computer.
To prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - hold down the 'option' and the 'command' keys when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - key the keys down until the iPod/iPhone is listed under the Devices list in iTunes - this will prevent a sync from taking place and you will be able to change your settings.

  • How to sync iPhone 4 with a new computer?

    Hi,
I just gave my iPhone 4 to someone else but he said he is unable to sync the phone to his computer. He said that the phone is still 'tied' to my computer. How can he sync the iPhone without erasing anything on the phone?
    Thanks in advance!

This is definitely not a good idea.  Either he owns the iPhone or you own it.
Once he takes over ownership of the iPhone, he should do Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings and make the iPhone his own.  Otherwise, you will get in each other's way regarding messages, FaceTime, music, apps, etc.
Once the iPhone is erased, he can set it up as new using his computer and his iTunes.

  • How do I sync iphone 4S with a new computer?

I have just bought a new computer and installed itunes but i cannot sync my iphone as it is linked to the library on my previous computer.
I have been searching forums and Apple support for days now with no success. I phoned Apple support but they want £25 for the answer... em, no chance. You have enough money you greedy bastards.
Any help would be much appreciated.

As long as your original computer is still working you can take the device back to it, restore the most recent backup, then start over.
    The process should be:
Transfer working library to new computer.
    Authorize new computer.
Sync device (as if nothing had changed).
Deauthorize old computer if you don't want to access protected content from it again.
The key to getting right is step 1. Here is how I usually suggest to do it...
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.

  • Syncing iPhone (and iPad) to new Computer

I will be switching computers (a Dell to a MacBook Pro) and will need to move all my music to the new MacBook Pro and use the MBP as my host computer to sync my iPad and iPhone to.  Is there anyway to not lose my playlists, photos, etc. when I sync to the new MacBook pro for the first time?  Thanks.

I think if you move the contents of your library to your Mac it should appear in new iTunes, if not you may drag items to it.
However, you may read this to get it done more correctly.

as well do not forget to deauthorize your iTunes account on PC when the new iTunes is set up.

  • Is there a way to sync my IPhone 4s to a new computer WITHOUT losing all of my 300 songs?

I recently moved and my old computer is no longer here. All of my songs are still on my IPhone 4s, but whenever I try to sync my phone to this new computer, it wants to delete all of my songs. A solution would be amazing

Yes, it will. Try using TouchCopy (http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php) (automatic transfer), or iExplorer (manual transfer of files).

You are probably trying to use old Sync with Firefox newer than version 29,
and they did make old Sync unusable on fresh installations of newer Firefox.
You can uninstall that newer Firefox, then install Firefox 29 from here:
    https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/29.0.1/
Apply your sync key code, then update that installation to current Firefox,
    then migrate to new Sync:

Where is your old computer and why didn't you transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer along with all other important data you will need or want to access on your new computer?
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPad, or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only. If you transfer your iTunes library to a new computer to be used for syncing, no iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased with the first sync with iTunes on the new computer.

    WINDOWS?
Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.
In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.
In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check "Show hidden files and folders."
Navigate to the Music folder. On my 'pod, the full path is
Portable Media Devices\NAME of IPOD (F:)\iPod_Control\Music
Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.
And you're done! The iPod music folder structure is strange and inexplicable, but once you move your files into iTunes you can set it to automatically organize your folder by artist and album to clean that up. (To do this, in iTunes Edit menu, choose Preferences and in the Advanced tab, check "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized."

  • IPad syncing issue between old and new computer.

I 'm trying to sync my iPad to a new computer, but it says my iPad is already synced to another library.  My previous computer and data is no longer accessible.  I do NOT want to lose what I have on my iPad, its a real pain and its happened before: the message says I would have to ERASE! everything to sync it.  This really makes me hate iTunes.  Thoughts?  Help?

iPhones are not really designed to be synced, or even manually managed, with multiple computers. You should sync with a single library. Depending what you've done so far you may in fact have the same library on both computers, but if not see this tip on migrating your library.
Even when you have exactly the same iTunes library on two computers iTunes "knows" to sync the pictures from just one of them, though in my experience they have stayed on the device when syncing with the other machine. If you copy the pictures over to the new computer, then select the folder to sync photos from on the new computer they should all get added in.

Before you restore the iPod from the backup that Dave had you make yu have to transfer stuff from the iPod to the computer since the backup does not contain the apps themselfes, music, synced phots and some other stuff.  To see what a backup contains see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
    To transfer iTunes purchases:

    - For other stuff you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support CommunitiesA lot of thos are paid, especiall for more than a limited number of items.  It is harder to find one that does synced photos.
