Question RE: Upgrading To LION OS X

I am a former PC who is a new Mac
Would someone please direct me to the best step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade your iMac to LION OS from Snow Leopard 10.6.8?
Again, I'm very new at being a MAC.

1. update to 10.6.8
2.. make bootable backup/clone to another volume and test it to ensure that it's viable
3. launch App Store, buy Lion, and quit after it's DL'd—DON'T install it
4. make a copy of Install Mac OS X Lion.app residing in /Applications and put it somewhere safe; otherwise, the new, but unimproved, installer deletes itself after installing Lion

  • Question About Upgrading To Lion OS

I have an iMac 27" which I got in 17-Jul.
I want to upgrade to Lion OS from Snow Leapord v10.6.8.
My question is if I go to MAC App Store and pay $29.99 for Lion OS and install it, will it format my MAC or wipe out all of my data {photo's, mp3, video, data files} ?

You should always do a full backup before any upgrade. By default Lion will not erase, but rather install over top of SL.
I usually recommend doing a fresh install though as it will make for a better experience with the new operating system.
If your interested, here's how to create a boot disc
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20080989-263/how-to-create-an-os-x-lion-ins tallation-disc/
Once created simply go into system preferences, startup disc and select your Lion boot disc. Once restarted go into utilities, erase your hard-drive. Install Lion and then restore from a backup.

  • Question: i upgraded to Lion and now itune upgrade will not install (error message appears)

i upgraded to Lion and now itune upgrade will not install (error message appears)

iPhoto needs to be upgraded in order to work with Mavericks. You can do that via Software Update or the App Store.
The iWork apps are free with a new iOS device since 1 SEP 2013. They are free with a new Mac since 1 OCT 2013. They are also free with the upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 if you had the previous version installed when you upgraded.
Upgrading iPhoto does not involve your iPhoto Library. Your photos will still be there. But it never hurts to make a backup first.

  • Question on upgrade from Lion 10.7.5 to Mavericks

I have Lion 10.7.5 and I am trying to upgrade to Mavericks 10.9. I follow the straight forward instructions and then when I get to the App store panel and click the download button the Star spins and then nothing happens. I am logged in with my apple ID

To determine if it is actually downloading use Launchpad. You should see a fairly obvious new icon with an associated progress bar. Make sure you check every Launchpad page by swiping left / right.
If it's paused, click the icon to restart it.
Once it completes the icon will appear in Applications and Launchpad, it's just easier to find in Launchpad.
When it's finished downloading it looks like this:
If it really is not downloading read Mac App Store: How to resume interrupted downloads
    Open the Mac App Store.
From the Store menu, choose Sign In.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Purchases to get to your Purchases Page.
Click the Resume button next to the app name.

  • Time Machine usage after upgrade to Lion

    Hi,
On one of my Macs I've still Snow Leopard running and I'm using Time Machine for backups.
Question: After upgrading to Lion on that Mac, will I be able to continue "incremental" Time Machine backups OR will I have to make a complete Time Machine backup of the entire hard drive?
    Many thanks.

Because of the new OS, Time Machine will want to backup the whole new OS and all other files affected by it.  It's a lengthy backup.  Then it will go  back to incremental backups.
    Hope this helps

Your MBP should have been given to you with the original installation disks and OS.  The Lion OS is licensed to the person who sold it to you.  You will have create your own account and purchase Lion if you wish to use it.  Those are the stipulations in the licensing agreements.
    Ciao.

Negative reviews are common place here as it is a trouble shooting forum. If you want to read the advantages, improvements and new features then go to the Apple site. If you are running Word 2004, Early Adobe suite, etc which are PPC programs, then don't update. Go to Apple logo in upper left menu bar, open About this mac > More Info > Software >Applications and sort by 'Kind' and look what PPC programs you have installed. If you are not prepared to upgrade these programs, then do not update to Lion.
There are plenty of threads to read up on about this here. But remember that 99.9% of comments will be negative, even though the forums represent only a tiny fraction of the Millions of Lion Downloads purchased and installed with no issues at all. So basically it's your call.
    Good Luck

  • 2 computers to upgrade to lion - question

I'm having my computer gurus take care of some cleanup plus the upgrade to Lion on my iMac and my laptop. They're going to need to keep the computer(s) for a few days and I hate to be totally without anything for that long.
Is there any advantage to giving them both computers so they can do both upgrades at the same time? Or can I just have them do the iMac and then, when have it back, the laptop?
Just need somone's opinion.  Turning over both computers and going without just makes me nervous.

The only advantage to giving them both computers at once is that you will have Lion installed on both right away.  If you can do without both computers during whatever timeframe they give you on how long it will take to complete the installation, then do that.  If you need computer access, then have them do one at a time.

  • Late 2010 MacBook Pro 15", upgraded to Lion on Sat 23rd no external display does not work

    Hi all,
Wanted to ask this question here see if anyone might have a solution to my problem.  I have a Late 2010 Macbook Pro 15" which I upgraded to Lion yesteray.  Ever since that upgrade when I try to connect to my TV to watch a video no joy the image looks like the colours are out.
I have tried it on different resolutions and always the same.  Then for some reason the MacBook Pro split the screen in two.  So now I see the right of the screen on the left of the TV and the left on the righ with a big black line done the middle.
Priror to the Lion upgrade everything was fine.  Only since Lion has this been a problem.
I am using a Minidisply to HDMI cable to go direct into my Phillips 42" Plasma, and I have not got a clue why this is doing this.  The strange thing is it works ok on my Samsung BX2450 down the same cable no problems at all just the TV that has issues.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers

  • I have a 3rd generation ipod nano. I upgraded to lion. I tried to buy an audio book and download it to my nano like I have done at least 50 times before. Now the dialog box states that I need an ipod touch for the same function. MacBook Pro 2008 w/ m.trac

I have a 3rd generation ipod nano. I recently upgraded to Lion which is causing lots of issues. Aside from that, I went to the Itunes store to purchase books like I have done at least 100 times before with no problems. Now I can by the book and get it to my computer, however when I tried to download the book to my 3rd generation ipod the dialog box informed me that to download any new audiobook purchases I would need an ipod touch. My ipod nano 3rd generation serves my purposes just fine. Why should I be forced to buy something I do not want just to continue something I have always done seamlessly? I know this is more of a rant than a question but I am sure someone else out there has had this happen to them. Maybe you could share your thoughts on how to work around this issue if possible?

I forgot to add the last obvious and crucial step I had taken - plugging a different iPod into my system. It was also not recognized. That was the final proof I needed to determine if the problem was device or system. But now what?
I truly appreciate any help I can get!
    Thanks again...

  • After upgrading to Lion my internet connection doesn't work

    Hey folks,
MacPro 2010, wired connection through Verizon FiOS, upgraded to Lion (via App Store) back in July, but now my wife says she can't get on the Interent
on her account, even though all connections are good, she has an IP, subnet, DNS are good, the ethernet settings say she is connected, but using Chrome (13.0.782.122) or Safari, just hangs on browser launch. No URL will resolve no matter what site I enter. But when I log out of her account and into mine I can connect using the same Chrome browser just fine.
The only thing I can come up with is Chrome has had issues for quite some time on Snow Leopard and Lion when trying to update. About Chrome will display there is a new version and hitting the Install button will result in a "Update Server not available Error Code: 12". Any workaround by the Chrome Blog was not helpful, and uninstalling and reinstalling the program would sometimes work. But every so often when I would manually check About Chrome it would mysteriously be updated all by itself, and I was fine. Eventually though, every so often I would check and it would say there's a new version and I would get the infamous error. I could never seem to update the program myself. I would have to wait until it did it on its own?
I don't know if fooling around with Chrome's insides (using AppTrap to get rid of Chrome, manually deleting Preferences.js files, etc) corrupted something on my wifes account, which is a limited account and had some Parental Controls enabled - although she had Allow Unrestricted Access to Internet Sites checked off. I DID, however, have the Apps section restricted at some level, and I believe certain Chrome features were blocked ( like google updater), because while logged into her account, chrome would pop up: "you don't have access to GoogleUpdater...etc" and another one named   "xml or xmd" something or other, I can't remember exactly so I apologize. But while troubleshooting the no internet issue, I hit "Always Allow" for both messages, put in my password and she still couldn't get on the web, even when I turned off Parental Controls altogether. I couldn't even do a Software Update, it would just not move.
I even opened a Terminal window and Pinged www.google.com and was receiving replys at a steady rate, so I don't know what else to try. Safari is also exhibiting this same behavior, so I'm thinking its a common issue with both browsers since both use Webkit? I could be wrong obviously...
I'm at a loss as to what it could be or what to test out. Any help would be welcomed.
    Philip

I had this problem on SL and on Lion as well, and it occures for WiFi and Ethernet connections.
In fact the internet connection was not broken as I could ping the destination usin the IP (not DNS name).
In this case the problem was related to mDNSResponder task which handles all dns queries.
It was the most frequent problem in my day to day work with SL and now Lion. It was never fixed by any patch from Apple. I tried almost all voodoo including fresh install, all possible config changes - no solution.
The only version with no problems related to network was 10.5.8. All the other versions had issues of different kind (WiFi instability (lost signal), DNS problems (for wireless and wired connection) sometimes associated with machine sleep and wake up and sometimes with no reason.
QUESTION: Is your problem independent of the access point / router you connect to.
I must say networking was (and still is) the weakest part, besides the other OS X weaknesses I experienced during 4 years of OS X usage.
No problems in the same network with Linux or Windows beeing ran natively on my iMac So hardware is OK.
Software is of poor quality. Not much more to say in this matter.
I found a very interesting article dated 1996 about programming which I think is still valid.
    Link to the article: http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/06/writestuff.html
Below the fragment (with some connection to Apple)
Software is everything. It also s***s.
"It's like pre-Sumerian civilization," says Brad Cox, who wrote the software for Steve Jobs NeXT computer and is a professor at George Mason University. "The way we build software is in the hunter-gatherer stage."

After upgrading to Lion, I went to open Mail and received the message that it needed to upgrade my Mail database - this may take a few minutes. The bar shows it is about 1/5 along and has been there for over 10 hours.
I tried quitting and starting again but it just jumps back to the same spot.

It is quite large, but I have tried two of the fixes suggested and things now seem to be moving along.
(I was unable to seach properly before which is why I posted the question - it was a bit of a panic)

  • I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and it says that it will not support Power PC programs so my 2008 version of Mac Office and Intuit Quickbooks are blanked out.  I need these programs.  How do I proceed?

I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and it says that it will not support Power PC programs and has blanked out my 2008 version of MS Office for Mac and Intuit's Quickbooks.  How do I proceed to get these programs back?

Upgrade to newer versions compatible with Lion or downgrade to Snow Leopard:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Is this a "safe" way to upgrade to lion and transfer apps/data to new imac?

I have an older imac running 10.6.8 and I am considering buying a new one.
I read a link with guidleines to upgrade to lion. My question is:
After upgrading to lion, I am going to buy a new imac and want to move to the new imac with the least inconvenience. I have a lot of music app/usb interfaces so the time to reconfigure everything would be very time consuming.
So is the "safe" way to do it?
Do a time machine backup of current configuration.
Follow the link I saw outlining upgrading from 10.6.8 to lion on my current imac.
Get everything working again on the current imac with mountain lion.
Do a time machine backup of the lion configuration.
Get the new imac and on first boot, elect to restore from the time machine backup wiping out what came installed on the new imac.
Another time machine backup on the new imac.
    I should be done?
or is there a better /safer way?
I have been putting this off for almost year because of the number of apps I am running and devices I have connected. a short list.
file servers off firewire 800 and 400 ( I know I will need the thunderbolt to firewire adapters).
approx 12-18 usb devices all connected either directly or daisy chained through usb controllers connected to usb controllers.
    about 10 external USB drives.
    vmware
    midi interfaces for piano/guitar.
    m-audio fast track ultra
    multiple DVD/blu-ray reader/writers
Hence my concern for a smooth transition
    thanks in advance.

There is really no need to update the older iMac running 10.6 to Lion, especially if you have multiple backups of your User Data. You can easliy move or migrate data from any one of your External HDs or Server to the new iMac.
    As for your current iMac:
If you plan on selling the older iMac, Lion is not transferable and you will want to sell it with a clean install of 10.6 and let the new owner upgrade.
If you plan on keeping the older iMac around for others to use and it supports Mountain Lion, then in my humble opinion Mountain Lion is the better upgrade.
    As for your other devices:
    • Yes, Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter
    • Yes, external USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices are backwards compatible
    • Sorry, I don't use vmware
    • Sorry, I don't use midi interfaces
    • Sorry, I don't use m-audio
    • Yes, my external DVD drives work with various Mac's running 10.6 thru 10.8
Sorry I can't better answer your Audio questions. If no one else comes along with the answers here, then you might try starting another ASC question focused on those transitions.
