Question relating to Java printing and where to post...

First of all I am not a developer, but I have a question regarding printing in an application that was developed using Java and am not sure where to post it. I'll pose the question than defer to a moderator to move it if necessary.
Here's the issue and question:
We are using an application that has a host/client structure on several systems that use Windows Vista and XP. I have been told by the support team for this application that they use Java for printing tasks. I don't know if the entire application or just the print engine were developed in Java.
Here's the problem:
Whenever I tell this app to print for the FIRST time after opening the app, it takes between 4 and 5 minutes before it brings up the print menu. Again, this ONLY happens the FIRST time I tell it to print, and subsequent print commands are processed in a more normal timeframe.
If I close this app and immediatly open it again, it goes through the same silly wait time for the FIRST print only.
Tech support had me update Java to the latest incarnation on all machines, but that changed nothing. The guy even had the GALL to blame Java for the issue, can you believe that???
Anyway, my question to you people here - that develop with Java - is what in the world this app ( and I suppose Java ) could possibly be doing with this print job for 4 to 5 minutes?
BTW... these are NEW systems, with Dual-Core processors and a minimum of 1.5 gigs ( the server has 3 gigs) of RAM. Oh, and what I am printing is simply text, no graphics, just plain simple text.
Any and all comments/suggestions appreciated...
bob

Thx ChuckBing,
I agree with you about the application being the most logical source of the problem, and I have already provided their support with all the details that you suggest.
I'll look at the link you provided and see if anything there steers me in a direction....

  • General questions related to Java

    Good evening,I would like to ask you some questions related to Java :
    1) class A {
    public int x=1;
    public int y=5;
    public A() { y=6; }
    public A(int a) { x=a; }
    public A(int a, int b) { x=a; y=b; }
    class B extends A {
    public B() {}
    public B(int a) { super(a); }
    public B(int a, int b) { super(a,b); }
    public B(int a, int b, int c) { x=a+b+c; }
    public B(int a, int b, int c, int d) {
    super(a,b); y=c+d; }
    public class Test {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    B b4 = new B(1,1,1);
    System.out.println("b4.x: "+b4.x+" b4.y: "+b4.y);
    I cannot understand why y = 6.
    As i see it,i find it more logical that y = 5.
    Could anybody tell me why y becomes 6?
    How did we get into the constructor of A : public A() in order y to be changed?
    2) Well in an exercise i have to handle out we have to find the a,b,c of a program .Unfortunately i dunno about them,Can anybody explain to me what do they mean or attach me a link (e.g. a tutorial) in order to figure out?
    a)pre condition in Java
    b)post condition in Java
    c)invariant condition
    3)
    3) Fraction apple = new Fraction (1, 2);
    Fraction peach = new Fraction (4, 5);
    Fraction pear = apple;
    peach.halve();
    pear.halve();
    System.out.println(apple);
    System.out.println(peach);
    System.out.println(pear);
    It's the first time i see an object as a parameter in System.out.println.
    CAn anybody tell me when i can pass an object as an argument in System.out.println?
    Thanks in advance!

    How did we get into the constructor of A : public A() in order y to be changed?if you don't explicitly call a super constructor, the empty super constructor is called for you. If no empty accessible super constructor is available and no explicit call from subclass is made - compile error.
    CAn anybody tell me when i can pass an object as an argument in System.out.println?Whenever you want. Object.toString() will be called and the resulting String will be used. If the object is null, the String "null" will be used instead.

  • Photobook: how do I order printing and where do I see the prices?

    Photobook printing:  I do not want to print my photobook with my own printer but would like to have it printed. I live in Germany.  How do I order the printing and where can I see the prices?
    Thank you!

    You don't, simply.
    You can have multiple copies of the same item in an ordr, but not two items.

  • Stop it from using photo black ink for black text printing and where has the color ink gone?

    My HP Photosmart Prem C310 series all in one is using the Black Photo ink cartridge for text printing instead of the XL Black that I put in it for text printing. How can I get it to use the right cartridge for printing? Also, even though I have NOT printed ANY photo's and very few pages of text the new set of color cartridges I put in it a few months ago are almost empty. Why? How could they be almost empty when I have NOT printed anything in color? This is getting ridiculous replacing ink cartridges every few months WHEN I HAVE NOT BEEN PRINTING ANYTHING!!!
    The set of ink cartridges that came with it lasted for several months. Since then I've gone through two sets in less than a year. That's 3 sets of ink cartridges when I have only printed 3 photo's when I first set it up. And have only used les than a 1/4 of one package of printing paper. I've only put paper in it twice. Each time it was about a 1/4 inch or 3/8 of an inch thick stack of paper in the tray. I've even tried shutting the printer down when its not being used for a long period of time but the ink is still disapearing. Where is it going? Why is it going there? How do I stop it? This is rediculous. I may as well junk the thing even though it still works because I cant aford to keep feeding it ink when its just sitting there doing nothing most of the time.
    Thank you
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    I just got another email from HP about this problem wanting to know what I found for a solution to this problem. From all of the suggestions from the HP tec support all of them pretty much kept saying the same thing. That it is my fault that it's using so much ink because I have it on the wrong settings. One tec did slip and say that it doesn't matter what settings you have it on it will always use the Photo Black cartridge for printing plain black text and it doesn't matter if you have a X-Large Black cartridge in it for text printing because it was made to always use the Photo Black for text and even use some of the colors to blend with the black to make it stand out. Why anybody would need this when just printing shipping labels and things like that I don't know.
    Any who, The only solution for this problem is,,,, junk the printer and get a different brand & model of printer. Research it before buying to find out how much ink it wants to waste and if it will still print black text if it only has a black cartridge in it. I was going to get rid of mine by giving it to a friend since they don't have a printer. But since I want to keep him as a friend I decided not to give it to him. Since it cant be traded in for a different one even though it still works, Its going to the target shooting range the next time I go out shooting. Maybe I'll take a few video's clips of it getting blasted to pieces with a Ruger 10-22 .22 cal. rifle with 25 shot clips, a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle shooting .223 cal with a 30 shot clip, a Chinese SKS 7.62 with a 30 shot clip. And maybe use my Ruger P89 9mm pistol and put a couple 15 round clips of 9mm in it. If there's anything left I'll finish it off with a few 3" magnum loads of #2 steel shot with my 20 gauge shotgun.  Then I think I'll do the same thing to my Westinghouse 46" flat screen HDTV that just died.
       Then maybe I'll come back and post the video's of my "solution to this printers problem". It may not fix the problem, but it will be an entertaining way of getting rid of the problem.

  • TS1317 I have just purchased my Apple on plugging in my wireless internet usb it says I need a Java runtime, how do I know what Java runtime and where do I download it from?

    Can anyone tell me what 'Java runtime' is required to get my Blink usb internet connection working and where I can download it from?

    Holly cow, I don't see where it supports anything but Windows®!?
    http://www.blinkit.net.au/Support
    Also, pretty dangerous of them to require Java to use this.
    Anyway, open Applications>Utilities>Java Preferences, that'll tell you the Versions you have... might need to check "Enable applet Pug-in and Web Start Applications", not sure.

  • Two related questions:  ColdFusion 10/Java applications and J2EE supported servers

    I have two related questions:
    1.  CF10 and integration with Java Web applications
    We have a couple of Java applications running on JRun and interfacing with CF9 applications.  The JRun clusters were created through the JRun Admin and, apart from lack of Axis 2.0 support, have served us well for years now.  And, as would be the case, the ColdFusion9/Java/Flash application is a critical public-facing application that the business uses for bidding on projects.
    It appears that with ColdFusion 10 on Tomcat, we will not be able to run those Java applications on a Tomcat-CF10 JVM cluster.  Is this correct?  IF so, what are our options?
    2.  J2EE Application Servers supported by Adobe for CF10
    Which of these is correct?
    A.  This URL (http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion-enterprise/faq.html) states "ColdFusion 10 supports IBM® WebSphere, Oracle® WebLogic, Adobe JRun, Apache Tomcat, and JBoss."
    B.  This URL (http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/coldfusion/pdfs/cf1 0/coldfusion10-support-matrix.pdf) states:
    "J2EE application servers: WebLogic Server 10.3, 11.1, WebSphere Application Server 7, ND 7 JBoss 5.1, 6.0, 7.1.0"
    I *think* "A" above is wrong re. support for Adobe JRun.  It does not specify a version of Apache Tomcat unless it is simply referring to the custom version the comes with CF10.
    Option "B" above shows no support of Adobe JRun or 'standard' Apache Tomcat.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Question 1 above was answered:  "No support for Java web applications under CF10's custom version of Tomcat"
    Question 2:  No answer yet:  Is Apache Tomcat (NOT Adobe's customized version) supported for CF10 J2EE deployment?  I do not see any installation instructions on how to install CF10 on Apache Tomcat 6 or 7.
    Is anybody using Apache Tomcat as their J2EE app servers and, again, NOT Adobe's customized/limited version?
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Visual Hub questions (related to Apple TV) and others

    Hey guys,
    Just bought Visual Hub to convert my stuff.
    What do you recommend for the settings ?
    Right now this is what I use : (NOTE : I translated on the fly from french so maybe it's a bit different)
    -To : iTunes
    -Optimize for : Apple TV 5.1
    -Quality : BIG QUESTION HERE : I want as close as 1080p as can be, but if the source file I'm -converting is poor quality, won't this make a big file for nothing ? What should I base my choice on?
    -H.264 enabled
    -In advanced, I select double-pass and deinterlace, audio settings = initial
    Nothing else is tweaked in advanced
    so what do you think ?
    I have a couple of other questions :
    - What if I deinterlace a video that is not interlaced in the beginning ?
    - How can I determine if a video is interlaced ?
    - How can I tell if a video is in 5.1 or even full HD ?
    - How can I make sure to get 5.1 on my Apple TV
    - Can Apple TV play 1080p ? or is it just upscaling ?
    - If A TV can output 1080p, where can I find sources file of such quality ?
    Anything else that I should know of related to my questions ?
    Thanks guys !!

    I don't use visualhub so I couldn't suggest settings for you, but.
    but if the source file I'm -converting is poor quality, won't this make a big file for nothing
    Yes, that's all it will do.
    What if I deinterlace a video that is not interlaced in the beginning ?
    You will lose detail
    How can I determine if a video is interlaced ?
    Take a look at it on a progressive scan display such as your mac monitor, you will see horizontal lines in high motion areas when paused.
    How can I tell if a video is in 5.1 or even full HD ?
    See This
    How can I make sure to get 5.1 on my Apple TV
    Your content file need to have an AC3 track and you will need to play the audio through a 5.1 capable receiver or home theatre system.
    Can Apple TV play 1080p ? or is it just upscaling ?
    It can play up to 720p after which it upscales.
    If A TV can output 1080p, where can I find sources file of such quality ?
    More or less nowhere.

  • Question related to SFP, Fiber, and switches model Compatibility for Gigs Connections

    Hi everyone,
    I am in the middle of a project where we are receiving a 2gig Internet connection from a service provider. I need to connect this to a switch , my question is related to what sfp, switch would be the most compatible. I was thinking about a 3750 switch with sfp modules, but i am not sure if a SFP 1000 sx is enough as we are receiving a 2 gig connection via fiber then I would need to use a 10G module, with 10G sfps... mm well i am very confuse... can anyone help me please in your experience with a similar situation
    Thanks.

    A "2 gig" connection might mean a 10g logically limited to 2g, or it might mean the full duplex capacity of a gig link.
    The SFP+ ports on 10g 3750X modules will support either a gig or 10g transceiver.  The SPF ports, on either 10g or gig modules will only support gig.

  • Java Printing and Dot Matrix printer

    I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I didn't see any forum about printing.
    I have gotten printing working for my application to both "real" printers and dot-matrix printers. The problem is that I want to display a print dialog box, and have my application detect whether the user selected a "real" printer or a dot-matix printer.
    I've dumped out the supported DocFlavors for both kinds of printers and haven't been able to find any reliable way to determine the printer type. Has anyone found a reliable way to do this?
    I need to detect the printer type becuase I use one DocFlavor to print to a dot-matrix and a different DocFlavor to print to a "real" printer.
    Thanks for any help,

    Thanks for the replies,
    I would like to find some way to auto-detect this, if it is possible. I swear that I will only use the PrinterResolution class for good and not evil!! I was looking at the supported printer resolutions for the printers that are in my office here, and this is what I found:
    Supported Resolutions Win32 Printer : FX-890  (my dot matrix)
    24000x14400 dphi
    12000x7200 dphi
    12000x14400 dphi
    Supported Resolutions Win32 Printer : HP LaserJet 4050 Series PS
    30000x30000 dphi
    60000x60000 dphi
    120000x120000 dphi
    Supported Resolutions Win32 Printer : HP Color LaserJet 4550 PCL 5c
    60000x60000 dphiIt seems interesting that the laser jets only report resolutions that are the same horizontal as vertical, and that the dot matrix supports resolutions that are have different horz vs vert resolutions. Maybe I could use this to make a guess?
    Unfortunately we don't use any native code in our application, although it could be a possibility if there is no 100% java way to auto-detect this. The vast majority of our users will be running Windows. Do you know of a way to figure this out in Windows?
    Thanks,
    --Ryan

  • Some question about mdm java api and portal content

    Hi Gurus,
    I am new to MDM. I am going to develop some web dynpro application using mdm java api.
    My question is regarding the relationship between MDM version and NW version:
    for example
    1.MDM5.5 JAVA api can be deployed to CE 7.11 server?
    2.MDM7.1 JAVA API can be deployed to CE 7.11 server? or can only be deployed to CE server.
    the same question for the MDM portal content.
    the possible dev environment  for our company would be:
    1.MDM7.1
    2.CE7.2(do we need another EP7 server for the UWL?)
    Best regards,
    John

    Hi,
    I am using Portal 7.0. MDM version is 7.1.
    My problem is ... i am trying to connect WebDynpro (JAVA) to MDM7.1. But am unable to do so. I have a WD Frame in which i have a WD iView and the MDM iView. But i am unable to pass parameters from the WD iView to MDM Item Details iView.
    Note:
    1. I have deployed MDM JAVA API on NWDS
    2. I have specified " * " as a parameter to pass from the URL in the Item Details iView.
    Please help.
    Every help that i have read talks about CE7.1 but not NW 7.0

  • Question related to POF configuration and use-subclasses

    Hi,
    I noticed that the default POF configuration in coherence.jar (coherence-pof-config.xml) forces the use-subclasses flag to true (the ultimate use-subclasses value is true if whichever loaded POF configuration file specifies it to be true), and thus making it impossible to get error messages if a certain subclass of a registered type is not registered specifically in the POF-configuration, and users may silently lose data this way.
    My question is:
    Is the use-subclasses flag in the coherence-pof-config.xml set to true only because of Throwable-s, or are there other Coherence-provided classes which are serialized by subclass resolution and thus depend on the use-subclasses flag being true?
    If only the Throwable-s depend on that, then instead of setting it to true, we can set it to false and use the following class instead of ConfigurablePofContext as the Serializer class for the POF-enabled services:
    import com.tangosol.io.pof.ConfigurablePofContext;
    import com.tangosol.run.xml.XmlElement;
    * This class extends ConfigurablePofContext with the possibility to
    * configurably disable the subclass-allowed setting forced true in the
    * coherence-pof-config.xml, and still be able to use ThrowablePofSerializer for
    * each not specifically configured Throwable subclass.

    Hi Robert,
    If you are only interested in Java you are correct.
    If you need more detail please let me know but I hope this answers your question.
    Best regards,
    -DaveHi Dave,
    I am also interested in other environments, so I need more detail.
    I am looking at the portability of my POF Serializer generator in which I assume that use-subclasses is false, because supporting use-subclasses being true would be quite hard to define, not to mention implement.
    Thanks and best regards,

    Hi Lyubomir,
    Thanks for your helpful replies.
    I am not able to get what you were trying to say here :"it is important for SAP to know what is the beginning balance for 2006 and how the values have changed during between 01.01. and 30.09."
    The fiscal year variant is V3 i.e april to march. So the start of year is 1.4.2006. and take over date is 30.09.2006.
    and the last depreciation psoted date was set as 2006 / 06 . i.e september 2006.
    In AS92 the asset values are split up as follows
    Book value

    When I look at the asset accounts GL balances it is same as the asset reports.
    In my case heer what is the best approach to load the legacy data?
    also when I run ABST2 the package is taken as 39 and phase as ANALYSE.
    But the system shows as " List contains no data"
    Are any patches to be updated?

  • Don't see my post - how long does it take? question on non-wireless printer and new fios network

    have a canon ip5000 - not wireless printer.  We just installed our fios network with 2 mac laptops and an imac desktop.  We also had been using an airport extreme and airport express (as an extender) with our cox cable modem.
    we cannot seem to hook up the canon to the network.  We ended up plugging the printer into the airport extreme and the airport extreme into the router.  However, the airport extreme now appears as a separate network on the - you can see it in the list of  networks  at the top of the screen.  so you have to toggle between our network for fios -- and then the the network for the airport extreme in order to print.
    There's got to be a way to connect up the printer to the fios router?
    logging into fios router - you can see the print server is on the list -- however it says inactive -- and never changes status.
    sorry if this is a duplicate to my previous post - I'm new here and not sure how long it takes tfor these messages to appear

    Actually ... go into the Airport and turn on "bridge mode".   Then go into the FiOS router and turn off the wireless.   Connect the WAN port on  Airport to one of the open ports on the FiOS router.   This will allow you to continue to use your Airport as the wireless access point, and continue to have your printer attached like you have had.
    It may be necessary to change the IP address of the Airport in this configuration (think bridge mode will suggest one for you -- but essentially and address somewhere on the 192.168.1.x that's not used -- I suggest 192.168.1.254).

  • I have another question related to the connection and operation of FP-RLY-422

    1. I use one 25 VDC power to supply power for all the five fieldpoint modules(i.e. V and C terminals of FP-2000, FP-AI-110, FP-AO-200 and FP-RLY-422 are connected) However, as cascading power from neighboring bases or network modules defeats isolation between cascaded modules. I want to know whether the switching of one channel of a module have influence on the reading or switching of other channels in other modules. May I need to provide seperate power supply for FP-2000, FP-AI-100, FP-AO-200, and FP-RLY-422. If FP-RLY-422 was suppled by power of 120 VAC. Is it OK. I read the manual of FP-RLY-422 which specifies 3 A at 35 VDC or 250 VAC. If I used it to control three heaters of 500 w each and
    another 750 W. The current of each channel will be over 3 A. Can it be wired in this way?
    2. I use FP-RLY-422 to control four heaters. Now I connected it in this way. I connect it firstly to one of four solid state relays for each channel of the fieldpoint relay. The solid state relay is just a open/close relay the input is 3-32VDC and the output is 110-220VAC/25 A or 240 VAC/50 A. In this case, I build the VI for the operation of heater just in two statuses i.e. on and off. In this case the temperature can't be controlled very accurately. I want to know whether I can build a VI based on PID control based on the present wiring of my cable (i.e. fieldpoint relay control on/off solid relay to control operation of heater indiretly). In this case may I wire the fieldpoint relay FP-RLY-422 directly to the heater of 750 W? I understand the fieldpoint relay FP-RLY-422 in this way. It is a mechanical relay and I can heard the sound when it switched between normally open and normally closed.
    I think it have only two statuses i.e. on and off. In this case would you please explain how it contrl the output for the heater more accurately. Does it control by regulating the time being on/off?

    Bo,
    1a) All FieldPoint I/O modules are supplied operating power from the power supply in the network module. Certain modules may require additional power for sourcing power via outputs or inputs. Of the modules you list above, the following module requires external power; FP-AO-200. The following modules do not require external power wired to the V & C terminals; FP-AI-100, FP-AI-110, FP-TC-120, and FP-RLY-422. The V & C terminals are provided on modules that do not require them to simplify wiring (e.g. not requiring external terminal blocks if you have loop powered current transmitters).
    1b) The FP-RLY-422 is rated for up to 3 amps at 35 VDC or 250 VAC. Currents above 3 Amps may damage the relays, the traces on the terminal base and FP-RLY-422 PWBs, and wi
    ll cause overheating of the connectoer between the terminal base and the I/O module.
    2a) You can use the FP-RLY-422 with a PID control algorithm to control the heater. However, as relays have limited life expectancies and are simply on/off the control will not be a fine as some other options. What may be better is to use a FP-PWM-520 pulse width module to control the solid state relays. You still control the solid state relay via on/off, but in this case, the on/off time can be occuring relatively quickly, and you change the amount of on time vs the amount of off time, to control the power going in to the heater.

    Aaron
