Questions about ati radeon 2600 on an 2006 mac pro

I know the debate has been going around for awhile about these cards, Apple claims that they are not supported but my card runs as long as you have leopard installed. So far the card has performed great, all my games and graphics programs run beautiful with it but I do have two problems. One is I can only have my display set at 1400 x 1050 any lower setting results in severe blurring on the screen. The other problem is that the text on my screen is some what pixelated and blurry.
I was wondering if there is a fix for this problem or is it just the price I have to pay for running it on a 2006 mac pro.

If it is a problem, and you can afford another upgrade, the Radeon 3870 might be your best choice.

  • Two questions about ATI RADEON HD 3870

I've been in touch with macsales.com and they recommend the ATI RADEON HD 3870 for the Mac Pro Xeon (late 2006-2007) running 10.5. But they were unable to answer w/ 100% certainty:
    1. That all I need to connect this card (it has 2 DVI ports) to my Samsung SynchMaster with one DVI cable connected "DVI to DVI" and one VGA - WITH - a DVI to VGA adapter on the VGA cable.
For those who don't know, the Samsung monitor must have both DVI and VGA connected to operate.
    2. I've read on this (Displays) forum that this card will only work "up to" 10.5 and won't work if I upgrade to 10.6. Is this correct? Also, is there a chance that Apple will "correct" 10.6 to work with the HD 3870 in a future point release? (I'm not yet willing to jump to 10.6, so this is for the near future when I do.)
Less important "#3" question: is it possible to make the HD 3870 backward compatible with 10.4? I ask because I'm running 10.4 on a separate internal drive so that I can continue to use some older apps for mission critical tasks. Eventually, I still plan to get rid of 10.4 - it's just not possible right away.

Thanks for the added input on the 3870. I also got confirmation that the "dual connection" (AVG + DVI) on the Samsung display can be worked out with an adapter.
But I've made up my mind: there's just too many counter-balancing factors. I'm pretty sure now that I can wait to see if the Geforce 7300 burns out. If it does so in the next 290 days, I'll just have Apple replace it for free since my AppleCare would take care of the cost.
I'm a retired purchasing agent so this 're-deciding' (with a lot more at stake) is normal for me. In this case (mine), I no longer see much advantage in having Snow Leopard. It's still new and needs at least one more upgrade / debugging release. Besides: I haven't mentioned that I have other ways I haven't used to boost the Mac Pro's performance.
As a "compensatory purchase" I just placed an order for two more RAM modules which will fill remaining RAM slots. That alone will give me a little more juice (as you say). These cost one-third that for a new graphics card (or less). This should tide me over - still running 10.4 and 10.5 on two drives. When my Apple Care runs out, I may well be in a position to buy a new Mac Pro with mature Snow Leopard, better graphics card, etceteras.

  • Satellite P200: Question about ATI HD 2600 drivers release

Will there be a release for a FULL XP HD2600 driver for the P200?
I am waiting, since I bought my laptop for drivers, but it is still a BETA.
I wrote several mails to Toshiba. I am seriously thinking of buy an other laptop with an NVIDIA card:
    1 & 2. Answer:
There is a new driver available ---- no, it was every time the same driver, it has been only re-uploaded, there were NO changes
    3. Answer:
use omega drivers --- haha, they dont work with 2k cards
    4. Answer:
go to laptopvideo2go.com --- lol, they only have NVIDIA drivers!!!
Because of that I want to ask here:
Are there any informations for a driver release for a P200 XP Ati HD 2600 driver?
I only want to know, if they will release a driver?

    Hi guys
I have already provided answered your first thread in the gaming area!!!
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=27484&tstart=0
    One more info;
Many different Toshiba notebooks series are delivered with the same graphic cards.
So sometimes the newer drivers can be found in other notebook series area on the Toshiba driver page. Just take a look into different notebook series which were delivered with the same GPU and check for newer version.
But there should be also a possibility to use the ATI drivers.
You have to download the driver package from ATI and should install the driver from device manager.
There choose Install from a list or specific location -> Dont search. I will choose the driver to install.
Then choose simply the INF file which was downloaded with the package.
But note; such drivers can be used only at your own risk!!!

  • Question about ATI  Radeon X1900

I have the ATI Radeon X1900 (512mb) and the fan on the card runs consistently... as in never stops unless the machine is asleep or off.
Is this normal behavior for this card?
    I have a MacPro 8Core and a 30" Cinema Display.
    I appreciate any insight.
MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   30" Cinema Display

Yes, it's audible although how much depends on your environment and hearing. Like you I wish mine were quieter but I'm used to it now.

Alternative may be to get a new machine

For me, the best place for any type of upgrade on your Mac Pro 1,1 (mine is a 2.66) is at Other World Computing.
The only video card available from OWC is the ATI Radeon 5770 HD.

Note: The same video card is also available at the online Apple Store.
I'm hoping to get it soon.

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB for Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core Xenon

I have the option of picking up an ATI Radeon HD 4870 1 GB graphics card to go with my soon-to-be-new MAc Pro 2.66 Quad core. I see know that Apple can upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, but that card is not available to me at the moment. Will the 1GB do the job without overheating the system? Am new to the Mac Pros. Need it for the Windows gaming portion of the system. Am using the rest for graphics and photography.

If the MAc Pro 2.66 comes with Snow Leopard, why would I have to upgrade my OS?
OK. So, if got the MAc version, it would work A-OK without overheating?
    Thanks for your input!

  • Television and TV Recording with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB  equip Mac Pro

I have been looking into a Mac Pro 2.66-3.0 Dual-core equipped with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB. One of the things I would like to accomplish is to also use the thing as a television and TV recorder (reliably). I have experience with the a PC equiped with a ATI9700pro all in wonder. I had nothing but problems with the software with hours (weeks) spent trying solve the issues. Turns out this is not an unusual thing with the ATI-Allinwonder. Thought I would check here to see whether anyone has input on how the x1900 works on the mac pro esp as a tv device.

the elgato system is an external tv tuner that connects by USB. It has nothing to do with the graphics card in your mac.
you can connect an antenna, cable, s-video or composite. Some of the models accomodate HDtv now.
the results are clean, and i've had no problems.

  • How to install an ATI Radeon HD 5700 into a Mac Pro dual 2.66?

My Nvidea card just died on my and I've gotten an ATI Radeo HD 5700 card to replace it but I can't find any information anywhere on the installation process. Slotting it in is easy but I'm unsure where to connect the 6-pin cable. I can see a pair of likely connectors on the board marked HDD_SNS but I'm not sure which, if either, is correct. Anybody out there with info? I've tried the AMD site and just googling with no useful results.
    Thanks,

  • Questions about setting up my network with my Mac Pro?

I'm trying to set up my network with my Mac Pro. I have two other roommates that need internet and a printer that we all need to access. The modem is with my Mac Pro in room 1, the printer is with another PC in room 2, and another PC with wifi is in room 3. What is the best way to connect all these.
My idea was to install an Airport card in my Mac Pro, then add an Airport Express station w/airtunes to room 2, to connect the PC and printer. That way, room 3 can access with wifi, and room 2 can physically plug into the Airport Express station. Problem with that is that the Airport Express Card must be professionally installed in my Mac Pro and that $80+ charge on top of the Airport Express and Aiport Card itself, turns this into a $200+ endeavor.
I also have a wireless Linksys router and Linksys WiFi USB receiver. Anybody have any other ideas?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Your plan wouldn't work anyway. The Mac Pro can not create a WDS compatible wireless network. Therefore the AirPort Express (AX) can not use WDS to wirelessly join the network. Therefore the AX's Ethernet port will not be activated.
The best solution is to buy an inexpensive wireless router [or the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)]. Connect the Mac Pro via Ethernet to the router. Add a wireless adapter to the PC in room 2. Therefore the PCs will connect wirelessly while the Mac Pro connects via Ethernet.

  • ATI Raedon X1900 malfunctioning in 2006 Mac Pro 1, 1

Thanks in advance for any help I am in a bind!
The graphics card mentioned above is malfunctioning primarily when playing any type of video files. Specifically my display will cut off and any other display that is attached. I haven't noticed any visual problems with my monitors just that it appears when processing video files my monitor blacks out like the signal from the card is cutting off. I know it's not my display because it has done this on multiple displays including tv connection.
What I primarily want to know is if this is something that could be fixed (and any suggestions on where to start) or if I would be better off upgrading the card. I would have already purchased one (I've got the 5770 in mind) but I want to make sure that this will fix the problem or if another internal problem is causing the blackout.
    Thanks again in advance!

In reply to myself - and others; of course,
So I decided that the heat of the graphics was causing the malfunction. When Playing HD video within 20-30m would shut off completly. Upon inspection of this problem I physically felt the graphics card with my hand and, I didn't actually measure the temperature but, was probably in the 175 degree range, or more; I don't really know.
I put a regular fan in front of the computer, with a high setting of 3, and pointed it directly into the computer (side panel removed) and what would you guess happened folks? It solved my problem! Unbelievable! Anyway I am very proud of this "temporary" solution and wanted to share my results.
Since this discovery I have found the PERFECT fan that fits exactly into the side of the computer by slightly pulling out the 3rd driver bay and hanging this small high velocity fan from it that I got at True Value for less than 10 bucks!
If anyone is interested in the exact product I bought (available online or at True Value) and a picture of how I placed the fan onto the computer reply to this post and I will post a link that will provide all information.
    Regards,
    Eric

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27" display and a 42" LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best card?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • ATI Radeon 2600 XT on Mac Pro 2008 has died

    Hi All,
I have recently been having issues with one of my ATI Radeon 2600 XT Graphics cards - choppy graphics, artefacts appearing on the display and endless crashes of the OS.
I have read online about a recall program Apple did run which recalled these exact graphics cards, and after checking the serial number of the card in question, it does indeed match one of the 'bad' batch.
The only problem is - the program ended in July 2011
What are the chances Apple would be kind enough to still swap my card for a new unaffected one?
    Thanks
    Mac Pro (early 2008)
    6GB Memory

    2 x 23" Cinema HD Monitors

What are the chances Apple would be kind enough to still swap my card for a new unaffected one?
I'm in the same boat.  :\  Mine just died too, would I need to take my tower to an Apple Store?  Or how would I go about asking Apple to replace my graphics card?
Also, if I were to put in a different graphics card (say the ATI Radeon HD 5770), how difficult is it to replace?  Would my Mac Pro (Early 2008) be able to handle it?  I have 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) processor, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 says it requires Mac Pro (Mid 2010) with PCI Express 2.0 slot and OS X 10.6.4, whereas I'm still on just 10.5 Leopard and have an Early 2008 model...
On another thread, here, The Hatter, said something about baking the card in the oven?  Would that work if Apple won't replace it for free?
I have never opened up my tower before (I don't know how!) and I have been wanting to upgrade my RAM as well.  I have 4x1GB cards and I wanted to move up to like 8 or 16GB.  I was thinking about buying RAM from NewEgg or Amazon, whichever is cheaper, any suggestions?
Thank you for any help and sorry about hijacking the thread!   >~<  Should I make my own thread or continue in this one?  I'm sorry, I just don't want to cause any problems...I will make a new one if need be.

  • ATI Radeon 5770 in 2006 Mac Pro with Lion

Hit an issue with my 2006 Mac Pro when the video card died in late October. At that point I was running Lion and had kept on top of software updates. Being on a restricted budget, I have purchased and installed an ATI Radeon 5770 card from the Apple store as I cannot afford a new Mac Pro. I knew that before I did this there may be incompatability problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros, and this seems to be the case.
However, having trawled through the forums it seems some users are able to run this card on 1.1 machines with Lion. So I am now wondering if I have another issue - I'd much rather stick with Lion if I can rather than revert to Snow Leopard. Now I have installed the card things seem fine with the display - the 30" cinema display no longer has blocks of pixels all over it. On boot up the screen is a pale grey, the Apple logo appears in the centre with the busy timer underneath. I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears. Everything sounds like the machine is booting normally but it just won't progress beyond this point. I have tried holding shift to boot it in safe mode but the same things happens.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction of what I should try next I'd be profoundly grateful!
    Vinny

I knew that before I did this there may be incompatibility problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros,
Although some users have complained of problems, their wounds may be self-inflicted. Use of a non-Apple ATI 5770 or failure to upgrade to at least 10.6.5 are high on the list. The main "issue", if you can even call it that, is the card runs more slowly than its published benchmarks due to PCIe 1 slots in the Mac Pro 1,2 and 2,1.
I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears.
That progress bar is indicative of unresolved Hard Drive problems. You need to boot to an alternate source of software (Hold Command-R at startup for Recovery_HD if you are running later than 10.6.8) and check the SMART Status and then select Macintosh_HD or whatever you renamed it and ( Repair Disk ). Repeat until all problems are resolved or it gets stuck. If you need help, copy the EXACT error message back here.

  • ATI Radeon 2600 graphics artifacts

I have a new MacPro with the ATI Radeon 2600 in it. Occasionally, (perhaps 3 times in 5 months)the screen will go completely wacky, with the whole screen turning like a tie die, except not as cool. A restart seems to fix the problem. Right now I am running EFI firmware version 01.00.236. There is an update (to .252) that I have been avoiding because of the increased fan noise and other complaints I have read about, I was hoping for a newer firmware to be released.
Are there MacPro users who have had the card issue, and had it fixed by the new firmware, and is there issues with the .252 firmware that make it worth avoiding?

I'm experiencing issues with my new Mac Pro as well, bought it this month. It has the default everything except I've added 8GB OWC ram. Everything passes apple hardware test, multiple times, but a few times now my open windows (all applications) have become "messed up". For example, this is Safari:

Is this similar to what everyone is seeing?

  • ATI Radeon 2600 XT Fan Noise

I just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:
    Mac OS X Update 10.5.5
    Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0
Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2
    iTunes 8.0
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.2
    QuickTime 7.5.5
    Remote Desktop Client Update 3.2.2
    Front Row Update
All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until this morning. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A soft reset of the SMC has also been done - no change. Is this a known issue? Is anybody else experiencing this? I've also posted my temps below:

I don't know what is happening with ATI, at first I thought it was the consolidation and merger that affects products and Q&A, but the X1900, then the 2600XT, and even the 3870's fans and noise (which after 3 months seems to be better now on the 3870 with the latest models rolling out).
Normally I would expect a new or even ref'd unit would have the latest fixes and if there still are problems... then there aren't any solutions? One person dropped into Vista and reduced fans to 20% setting and it works even under heavy loads w/o getting above 80C.
Seems like the Nvidia 8800GT costs more, doesn't have the drivers optimized for OpenGL just yet, but runs quieter.
One person complained theirs would making an annoying "up-down-up" fan revving constantly.
A copper cooling kit isn't a option user should have to invest in. Not sure it works with 2600 -
