Questions from future New Mac User

I am planning to get a Mac in the following month.
However, I read the reviews about Leopard and got kind of mixed feelings.
Are there really a lot of problems atm? or those problems just simply caused by misuse?
Another question is, is iWork a replacement for Microsoft office (really dont want to touch micrsoft products anymore)?
Thank you for your time

I agree with everything Kappy said, most importantly Macs are great. I have two, a MacBook and an iMac, and have few minor problems on occasion. I can always find a solution though, there's usually a fix. I love iWork, although it does not take the place of Office, it's much more enjoyable. Any document, presentation, or what have you, can be exported in all the popular formats. This includes, Word, PDF, HTML, RTF...Pages, the word document app in iWork is excellent, I write on it exclusively. Keynotes will make the best presentations you could imagine. Numbers, I barely use, it's more for spreadsheets, (work stuff) overall, the experience between the two is beyond comparison. iWork is the better product, and half the price. This is only my opinion, and I write at least 5000 words a day.

  • Really embarassing questions from a new Mac user

Okay, I have my new Mac Mini up and running and thought I'd test drive it by creating some simple holiday cards, recipe cards, gift tags, etc.
What application do I use for this? I found text edit, but that doesn't seem to have any graphics or clip art so to speak and I don't want to use photos.
Am I stupid? Or is there really no program for this sort of simple thing?
If I need to purchase additional software, what should I get?
    Thanks.

I'm not sure which stationaries you're talking about, although it's been a while since I used Microsoft Windows in a production environment. I know that Microsoft Works includes quite a few of them, but while it is bundled with many PCs, it's not part of Windows.
I think iWork features templates for CVs and so forth, and it's supposedly very good for creating stylish documents. FWIW, iWork is usually released at MacWorld San Francisco in January, so you may want to hold off to see if iWork '07 is released (after all, it's just a month away).
Also, while Pages can import and edit MS .doc files, it's not as good as some other applications. NeoOffice, which is based on OpenOffice.org, is free, Intel-native, and has good compatibility with MS Office documents.

Hi, Is there a way to delete the music I've already loaded onto my new ipod nano 3rd generation? I'm also trying to sync mp3's from a CD on guitar instruction, but the ipod would not sync it. Can you help with this too? Thanks.

  • A Dumb Question From A New CS3 User

I am in the process of building a new site using CS3. This is
my first experience with this product and I have what I am sure is
a remarkably dumb question. I have an image (a banner ad) centered
on one of the pages and would like to insert a table to the left of
the image without the image moving (i.e. down) from it's current
location. How can this be done?
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
    That worked perfectly.

An easy way is to make your table with two cells, then put
    the banner in the
right cell - if you need more subdivison of the left cell,
    you can put a
    table in it.

  • A few simple questions from a new Iphone user

Hi a few simple questions, just got an iphone 2g - 2nd hand so not really sure what to expect. Anyway I guess my first question is about mine sometimes being a little slow - when I look at contacts and sometimes when sending a txt it slows down/freezes a little - normal?
Secondly Edge - I havent used it much but when I have its been painfully slow, is this normal - is it always really slow - cause I had read despite not being 3g Edge was actually pretty fast - what exactly is data roaming by the way? I mean I have been switched off as basically I dont wanna use the internet till next month when they change my contract to one I get unlimited access on - is that right?
Im having a problems syncing videos to it - it just wont sync some but will others and Im not sure why - theyre same file type and they used to sync to my ipod touch but now they wont for some reason
    Cheers

    I have the origina iPhone.
Downloaded 2.0, synced phone with everything UNchecked. Installed 2.0. Synced with all the options checked to reload my data. The iPhone has been great. Noticed a little lag when I opened contacts. Installed the new upgrade, and everything is back, no lag.
Edge is Edge and nothing more. It is slow compared to a strong 3g signal. But is liveable most of the time. Heavy traffic can slow it down to barely usable.
My four wheel drive club has a web site with a large photo section. I was standing out in the middle of parking lot in San Jose, Ca and showing a friend some photos. It opens up a page of small picts to choose from. Select a print and it enlarges, He was amazed at how fast they appeard. Especially given the quantity of photos.

  • Quick questions from a new ATV user

    Hi guys
I've got today my ATV, like it so far...until i updated the software
now seems that when i play a video, the video freeze for few seconds, then it starts again; is kinda annoying especially when you watch a trailer; anyway seems that is random, so nothing that can be done.
    My questions:
1)why i can't copy stuff on the ATV like i do with my ipod touch? is annoying that it takes hours to copy a movie, when i could connect it via usb and get the work done, instead of waiting 2 hours to sync few episodes of a show (i have an airport extreme....).
    2) how can i pair the remote with the ATV only, instead of causing issues to all my MACs at home every time that i try to use the ATV?
    3) is there a manual somewhere, except the 3 pages manual available online and in the box?
    4) i saw a lot of hacks to play divx and other video formats....any chance to see an update from Apple instead of void the warranty to install these hacks?
Thanks a lot for the help...so far i like this little device, but i am surprised about the fact that the usb port is there for no reason...while on the airport extreme can be used to attach drives and printer any mod to attach an external storage?

    Thanks for the answers
    1) by ethernet cable you mean a cross cable between the mac and the ATV, or a simple connection with the router (Airport Extreme)? because in this case i have to unplug the tv and move the ATV in another room...not really practical
    2) tried, but even when ATV says "paired", i can still interact with my macbook and mac mini....annoying
    3) that was the small manual that i was talking about nothing more complex or in depth? or whatever i see is what i can get unless i hack it ?
    4) i understand the point; i just want to know if to get the full potentials of this product i have to hack it, or if there is a "regular " update that would enable some features (since someone compared the ATV to a stripped down Mac mini with Tiger on it); anyway for now i can live with it as is....the only hassle is to convert from DIVX the movies via QT, and takes about 1 hour for a 2 h movie (and 2 hours to sync down to the ATV lol)
    Thanks for your answers!

  • Organizational questions from a new iPhoto user

    Hello,
I recently purchased iPhoto in hopes that it will help me view my photos easily. I have a large (about 3,000) existing photo collection. I keep this collection very organized, and all photos are in a folder hierarchy of the form 'Year->Month->Day'. The name of each photo begins with the date, such as '2007-01-17 Trees.jpg'. My questions about iPhoto in relation to my existing photos are as follows:
    1) If I allow iPhoto to copy my photos, how does iPhoto organize the photos? Do I have any control over this organization or the file naming convention used? Will iPhoto recreate an intelligible directory structure with useful file names, or will all my subsequently imported photos be labeled as "PIC2315..." in a random directory structure?
    2) Can I make it such that iPhoto imports my photos and takes the date from the first characters of the file name, and the picture title from the subsequent portion of the file name?
    3) Not all of the dates in the metadata accurately reflect the date the photo was taken (some are old photos that were scanned in, some taken before digital cameras had extensive metadata), but the dates used at the beginning of the file names are accurate. Can I use iPhoto to update the date stamp on the photos in my library? Otherwise, the 'organize by date' option is not very useful.
    4) Is there any way to move the iPhoto library folder? It looks like, as with iTunes, iPhoto locates its library folder in a conspicuous location, whereas I feel that these files should be relegated to a more discrete location, like the Library folder (in my opinion, the 'pictures' folder should be reserved for images; data files should be stored elsewhere). This is not a big issue, more of an annoyance that Apple imposes its organizational conventions on me without my consent.
Advice on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.
    Adrian
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Hi Adrian
    1) If I allow iPhoto to copy my photos, how does iPhoto organize the photos
Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is organised:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
    To your specific questions:
Do I have any control over this organization
No. The exception is if you take responsibility for the File Management (In the Preferences, Advanced Pane, Uncheck Copy Files to the iPhoto Library Folder...) That way you can leave your files untouched in your file structure. However, if you do this when you delete a file from iPhoto you will need to delete it from the Finder by hand. Not the case if you let iPhoto do the file management.
Will iPhoto recreate an intelligible directory structure with useful file names, or will all my subsequently imported photos be labeled as "PIC2315..." in a random directory structure?
Yes it will, the files will be in rolls that can be named via the iPhoto Window and which names will be reflected in the Finder. The Pictures will be named as per the file name.
I'm guessing that all of this is so that you can easily and quickly find a file if you need it. However, you're missing the point of iPhoto. It's a Photo Organiser. The idea is you import your pics into it, they are stored (in full view) in the Finder and then everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window. Organise them, arrange them into albums (infinitely more flexible than your current folders - a single pic can be in any number of albums or slideshows, can be in Smart Albums, can be easily edited in external editors and exported easily.) Want to find a file? There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    2) Can I make it such that iPhoto imports my photos and takes the date from the first characters of the file name, and the picture title from the subsequent portion of the file name?
No, it will take the date from the EXIF data. However you can edit the date, title etc. from the Info window (the wee 'i' bottom left hand corner.) I think that answers your next question as well.
    4. You can put the iPhoto Library Folder anywhere you like, on an external disk, in another place on your HD, whatever. Apple aren't forcing you to do anything. (You can do the same with iTunes too). However, remember the iPhoto Library Folder contains Data and images.
One thing to remember is the standard warning: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
iPhoto is a very good app, reliable and very flexible. But you do have to work with it. All the work you've done on your folders you can recreate in the iPhoto Window (just drag the folders to the Source Window where they will be imported into Albums). Think of it as a Front End to your photo collection. Up to now you've been using the Finder as a front end, iPhoto is a lot more flexible.
Feel free to ask more if you want further clarification or info.
    Regards
    TD

  • 2 questions from a new Mac owner

    Hello everyone,
I just recently purchased my first Mac (Macbook Pro) and am really enjoying it. I have 2 questions that I cannot seem to find an answer for.
1: Is there a way to reverse the FN keys ( I dont like having to hit FN + F9 to use expose, i hardly ever use the those keys except for volume). Is there a way to make it so when i press the keys i get the normal key and if i want to use the features of the key hit FN + Key? I cant find any way to do this, weird because the documentation for Leopard never mentioned anything about me having to hit FN+F9 etc to use the features
2: Whenever i reboot into bootcamp and start to play a game, the notebook fans start going crazy and it heats up considerably fast. I usually stop playing after half an hour out of fear i will overheat. Is this normal behaviour for this to happen or could there be something wrong with my notebook?
Sorry if these sound silly, I am new to all this

    1. I don't think you can since the keys serve two purposes. However, an intrepid programmer may have written a utility for that sort of thing. One never knows. Search at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    2. Yes, that's normal because Windows does not have any fan control implemented. I don't think there's a solution for this common problem.

  • ? from a new Mac User

I really liked Tiger (The Missing Manual) I found it very helpful. I want to buy Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Mac. They have a Missing Manual Book for Photoshop elements 4.0 but it doesn't specify anything about Mac. Does that mean it's for Windows only? Will it be helpful to me?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I didn't see any books related to Photoshop Elements that were geared to Mac.

Free download from Shareware Connection - Animated Intro to Adobe Photoshop Elements for Mac. E-Help book dramatically speeding up learning Adobe Photoshop Elements. Tutorials are illustrated with full-sound movies showing around the program. the book is packaged with a patch revealing undocumented functions important for photographers.
    http://www.sharewareconnection.com/animated-intro-to-adobe-photoshop elements-for-mac.htm
Is there a book specifically written for the Mac version?

    2) I have a the option to access my work emails via a virtual server which is an internet address (mail.m******.com) i have hidden letters for security.
when I try and access this via contract internet it wont let me it says web cannot perfor this operation. same when i try and sccess if via my own wifi. however if i access it via contract wap it works.
    3) re: point 2 - it also sometimes asks me for a username and password? and will not accept any passwords that it could possibly be?
    4) also when i try an download the mail exchange file it says file corrup? any suggestions?
    5) if I want to set up my work email properly on my phone is this something thats easy to do yourself or would I need my work IT dept to sort?
    THANKS VERY MUCH!!!

    Hello,
For the initital page in the web browser, open the browser and then Options->Settings->General->Homepage. Here enter the page you want.
I have no idea why you can not access that page. I would suggest to contact Customer Support and report the issue. It may be a problem in the phone or something is missing.
To setup you email properly using Mail For Exchange, it is easy as long as you are using a Microsoft Exchange server and you know the server name, user name, password and domain.
To download Mail For Exchange, you can also download it in your computer and then transfer it to the device or downloade it directly to your device going to http://businesssoftware.nokia.com/mail_for_exchange_downloads.php
I also would contact customer support about the corrutped file.

  • Basic time machine question from a new mac owner

Hello. I have an icon on my computer that says time machine and when i select the open time machine preferences, it takes me to my set up for my airport extreme.. is this correct or is time machine something additional that i would purchase to set up?

Thanks for the star and no problem, I would recommend that you get yourself an external drive though for backup. With any computer not having a backup system is gamble and sooner or later you will lose. If you do decide on a TM backup drive it would be wise to get one that has Firewire or Firewire 800 connections (for speed) and it should be about 2x the size of your interal drive if possible. Once you connect one TM will automatically back up your system and continue to back up every hour only backing up changes and addtions. So for example if you keep music and pictures and are continually adding material to your computer those are memories that you don't want lost if your machine has a failure, TM will help prevent that from occuring. It is one of the coolest features of Leopard. Two pieces of good news, TM is simple and external hard drives are fairly inexpensive these days.

  • A few questions from a new iMac user!

So far I am loving this computer! However there are a few things that I can not figure out how to do and really dont have time to go to the store for a class at the moment. So hopefully you will be able to help me out.
    1. We have iWorks installed and I am trying to make a simple calendar to hand out to my students with information about due dates and such. Previously I was able to do this on Word but I can not figure out how to do this here!
    2. How do I copy and paste?
    3. With this new mouse how do I get it so that there is a right click?
Thank you all so much and I am sure you will see me on here plenty!

Pages, presuming you're referring to Apple's iWork suite, doesn't have a template for a calendar included. There are some suggestions in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6949516
You might also consider using iCal. You could set up a calendar just for student dates and then print that calendar only.
    3. With this new mouse how do I get it so that there is a right click?
You'll need to go into the Mouse system preferences and define the right-click action. The default is for the "left-click" and "right-click" both to be a standard click.
    Hope this helps.

  • Questions from a new Aperture user

    Two questions:
When I imported my old photos, I gave them the version name "Old Photos". Now any project I create, the photos I add to it also are automatically given the version name "Old Photos". While I can change this on a photo by photo basis (who would want to), I can't see to find where to change it on a global basis.
I have found the Sepia toner HUD and it works nicely, however, I can't seem to tone a monochrome any other colour. All colour modifications affect only the ratio of colours that make up the monochrome image and don't tone it. Any way to do this?
    Peter

Thanks Ian, I had seen and tried the Color Monochrome but I hadn't noticed the colour adjustment pane. It was set to Sepia so that is what I thougt I was stuck with. Works like a charm.
You're correct, I did set "Old Photos" version name during the import. I've now set it to "Master File Name" which I assume will allow the camera generated name to show s the master image name.
