Questions on organizing/sharing music files on 3 PC networked drive

I just added 1Tb network drive to 3 pc home network... I am planning on moving my iTunes music folder from the older, smaller network drive. I exceeded the 160GB size of the old drive when converting all of the WMA losselss files to Apple lossless while maintaining the old WMA files(I still think the Windows Media Player system is superior). With the new addition to our network, I am planning on the 3 pcs sharing music files... (my wife has been using iTunes for a while, I have just recently went over to the dark side)
What is the best way to organize the files??
-How to shuffle all without the folder of Christmas & Holiday music playing.
-Segregate each users individual files.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated, I know it would save a lot of time and pain instead of the trial and error method.

Thanks, Jason & Mike. This is how I resolved the problem. Turned out the disk with the data was in NTFS format. Neither my eMac nor my wife's Carbon iMac (prehistoric, in other words) was able to read it, on repeated attempts. In process I discovered (to my surprise) that the external hard drive attached to my eMac (a 320 Gig My Book) was formatted in FAT 32 format, and that the PC laptop (Thinkpad) read from it, and wrote to it, without any problem. (Is FAT 32 less than optimal for use with a pre-Intel Mac?). So I just copied the needed files from the NTFS disk to the FAT 32 disk, via the Thinkpad. When I reconnected the FAT 32 drive to the eMac, it turned out that it was easy [with some fiddling] to put the titles of the new music into the iTunes Library, without having to copy the music itself into iTunes. Making playlists does still seem to have to go manually. Sometimes the "New Playlist from Selection" option automatically gives a name (the original name) to the album from which the music came, sometimes it doesn't. Rationale not clear to me. Other problem: often the sequence is jumbled (this is after I added the whole collection of folders containing music to my iTunes Library in one fell swoop). Usually it was possible to correct this by copying track names for albums one album at a time from the external HD (in Columns view, selecting all the tracks in each folder simultaneously) directly into the playlist; the playlist name then always had to be copied or typed in separately. I don't know if I'm missing an easier route. Also, I see that I have version 4.7.1 of iTunes - I'll download a newer version! Don't know whether newer version will affect what I want to do in a positive sense.

I am a long time iTunes user but a new MacBook owner! I keep the majority of my music files on an external hard drive.   I'm trying to view all those files on my MacBook through iTunes.   With windows you would go to : File/Add To Library, and iTunes would add all your selected files to your music library BUT WOULD NOT COPY THEM TO YOUR HARD DRIVE.  In other words, if the external hard drive was connected, you could listen, drag/drop, and edit the files.   When I tried the same thing with my new MacBook... it actually started coping the files to my MacBook harddrive.  I don't want that, it's millions and millions of mp3's that I don't want to keep on my computer, only my external hard drive.   Can anyone help?    I'm sure it's something easy, I'm just so new to the Mac world.   Being an iPhone owner for many many years I'm picking up things fast, but this is getting the best of me!  Help !

  • How can I store my music files on an external hard drive and listen to them through iTunes that way?

How can I store my music files on an external hard drive and listen to them through iTunes that way? At the moment they're both on the external hard drive and also stored on the computer but I'm quickly running out of memory on my iBook G4 so I'd like to only keep them on the external hard drive and, if possible, delete them from my computer's hard drive. At the moment, when the hard drive isn't plugged in a lot of the files won't play and I get the exclamation mark next to the particular song in iTunes, but everything plays fine when the hard drive is plugged in.
    Thank you.

Sounds like your files are playing from the external drive already.  To check go to iTunes - Preferences - Advanced and check the Media Folder Location.  Change it to the external drive if you need to.

  • Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia.

Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia. Can I start using itunes music match while I am travelling without the actual music files attached to my itunes?

In your situation I strongly recommend you read over that KB article. The international iTunes Stores are not cross-compatible.
My understanding of how it would work is that when activating iTunes Match on your US Store account, any songs you have in your iTunes Library that were purchased from the AUS Store account will NOT be matched. As I understand it, those files will be uploaded (which means you need the files on a local HDD). I also do not think it is possible to have iTunes Match active on more than one store ID on the same computer. But since iTunes Match is not available internationally yet, that point is moot for the moment.
To be honest you might want to wait until the service is available internationally so you can guage how will it will serve you.

  • Moving 1000's of music files to a new hard drive

I have a good amount of songs and I have them all on my external hard drive for my laptop. I want to put the files on the laptop hard drive because my laptop uses all it's memory when connected to the external hard drive, plus whenever i want to carry my computer around, i can only listen to my music if i bring my external hard drive(which can be a hassel). The thing is, if I were to cut and paste all of my music files from my external hard drive, and put them on my laptop hard drive, the saved playlist for itunes would not be able to locate the files at all. I really dont want to have to individually locate these thousands of files after i transfer hard drives. I tried going into the itunes library files with notepad, but the text was all jibberish and in computer terms. Does anyone have any ideas to be able to accomplish this task in less time than having to individually locate each file after i move the files over?

Thank you for that. It all looks like it should work except for step 12:
From the Advanced menu, choose Consolidate Library. A message appears that says: "Consolidating your library will copy all of your music into the iTunes Music folder. This cannot be undone."
There is no button that says consolidate library. Not even on the example picture they have.

how do I extract my music files from a evternal hard drive and put them on my itunes?

If you used the Finder to move the files, iMovie will have lost track of them. iMovie holds the locations of the Event files, and Project files contain references to those locations. If you move the files, iMovie has no way of knowing where they are.
If you can, first move all the files back to their original locations. Plug in the external drive. Open iMovie and move the files in iMovie's interface (help explains how, but basically, just drag and drop in the event pane).
Then you can connect the drive to the new computer, and iMovie will see them.

Hello i am using TimeMachine to back-up entire Mac image (data + system) on an usb-local drive. I would like (on top of it) add a specific plan to back up some files on a remote network drive. Does TimeMachine support multiple back-up plans ? How ?

Time Machine is capable of backing up to multiple locations, and can be used to back up to both a local hard drive and a networked drive (provided that that drive is in or connected to a Time Capsule or another Mac that is sharing it over the network). The catch, though, is that you can't specify different things to back up to different destinations. Whatever you exclude from Time Machine backups is excluded from ALL backups, and whatever is included is included on all.
So, get a large enough drive that you can back up everything you want in all locations, or use something else for maintaining the network backup.

  • "Files not found" and network drive

I'm new to iTunes, and I think there's something fundamental I don't understand about it. I'm hoping someone here can clue me in.
Here's the situation: I have iTunes 7 on a 2.8GHz laptop running WinXP. It's connected via ethernet-based home network to a 400MHz desktop running WinXP. I have a lot of MP3s and M3U playlists created with Winamp on the desktop, which has a much larger hard drive than the laptop -- IOW, I'm not willing to move the MP3s to the laptop, but I want to run iTunes using the laptop's faster CPU (it also has the high-speed USB port my wife's "new" 4G iPod requires).
So what I did was to point the iTunes music folder to the mapped network drive on the desktop and then import all the M3U playlists into iTunes. So far, so good. I can then sync the iPod and all the songs get copied over. However, the next time I reconnect the iPod, all the songs have the "!" symbol next to them, indicating iTunes can't "find" them. When attempting to sync, I get the message that the songs were not copied because they could not be found. I can manually re-point the files to the directory on the mapped drive, but what a pain! The files in the mapped directory are in multiple sub-directories, but iTunes doesn't seem to have trouble searching recursively through sub-directories, so I doubt that's the issue.
I don't see anything in the documentation about problems of this nature with network drives. Is this a "known" issue in the sense that everyone else knows about it except me? If this has been discussed elsewhere on the forum, let me know.
    TIA,
    Eric
    Dell   Windows XP Pro

I too find it disturbing that this software is not "home network friendly" I have a similar setup and have digitized 200+ cd's including everything that my kids listen to as well. There are also several wirelessly connected computers in my house, and the last thing I want is a half-dozen copies of every song scattered throughout the house chewing up disk space. So far, I have 3 iPods in our household and my goal is to centrally store music files and allow network access from remote pc's on my network to sync our iPods with music that we own. Windows Vista has this capability with media player 11, and if I were so inclined, I would buy generic mp3 players that are compatible with MS MP sync, but I would like to give Apple a chance to add this feature. If not, the iPods can always be sold on ebay and replaced with MS compatible devices. I don't really want to do this because we do like our iPods.

  • Working with iTunes Music Folder locations on a network drive in Vista

I am having challenges assigning the "iTunes music folder location" to a network drive in Vista (using iTunes v.7.3). When I go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General, and choose change to assign the path, the Networks folder comes up, but does not display any network drives or expand out when I select it. Right clicking does let me explore the drives and see them so the ntwork is good. I did have the same problem in Windows XP, but since Windows XP created those automatic shortcuts to drives, I could assign them and that worked.
A quick solution is to map a network drive and then select that drive, but since my computer is a notebook and off my home LAN frequently, the mapped drive really slows the boot process.
Can't seem to find anything to change in the registry.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there anyone who can offer any suggestion to smooth this issue for me?
    Thanks
    Andre

Thanks for the feedback, but with the iPhone (I use the calendar feature a lot), synchronising just became a very common event, and perpetual re-connecting will drive me insane.
    I guess I will just live with what we have until the folks at Apple figure it out;

    A) the file is not zero bits and
    B) I disabled the antivirus software
and my zen app will still not copy the normal.dot file but it will copy another generic file from the same place where my normal.dot file is located

    Begin

When the stored procedure is executed, the following error is returned:

Can someone tell me how to get the UTL_FILE package to write a file to a network drive
    on a Windows NT server?
Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Did you restart the database after changing the init.ora parameter? Make sure that you have this new value in v$parameter view.

  • How do I add shared music files to my library?

Hi I have music sharing on and I can play all of the songs on this PC that are shared from my laptop, but is there a way to copy and add all of the actual music files onto my PC? Or can I just stream them with home sharing and need to use an external drive or some other way to get the actual files on this PC.

    Hi ajoddo20,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
You can use Home Sharing to import music and other media from one computer to another. Please use the instructions and information located in the attached article for information on how to complete the process.
