Questions regarding Alert log & Control file

Hello,
This is my first post to this forum. I'm new at administrating a database 11.2.0.3. I have couple of questions regarding Oracle DB.
1)Which one is preferred method among the two?
Checking alert log fie manually or automating a shell script for checking alert log file.
2) Does setting CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME parameter to zero make the database unrecoverable, if RMAN recovery catalog is not used?
Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Regards

1)Which one is preferred method among the two?
Checking alert log fie manually or automating a shell script for checking alert log file.
That depends on your comfortability - But checking alert log is good.
2) Does setting CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME parameter to zero make the database unrecoverable, if RMAN recovery catalog is not used?
Yes - you cannot recover your database if it set zero and doesn't have recovery catalog.

  • Question regarding alert log file and trace files

What should be the alert log file size ? And when should it be deleted? And for how many days user trace files should be kept?
Also will anyone please tell me the importance of these files.

"We did open a case with Oracle, but as no Oracle information to go off of, they requested we open a case with Microsoft, and here I am."
Actually, this is NOT opening a case with Microsoft.  This is making a post in a technical forum.  If you consider this critical, you should open an official case with Microsoft by calling their support line.  They will walk you through steps
to try to pull more information from the system, because what you have posted does not give enough information other than an error occurred in Oracle.exe.  If it turns out to be an issue with Oracle, you will pay for the support call.  If it turns
out to be a bug with Microsoft, I don't believe they charge you.  But if it is not a bug, then they would charge you.

    Hello;
I might look at the SQLNET.ORA file on both servers
    Try setting these :
    SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT=120
    SQLNET.SEND_TIMEOUT = 300
    SQLNET.RECV_TIMEOUT = 300
Make sure you restart the LISTENERS.
I'd look at this first :
ORA - 03135 : connection lost contact while shipping from Primary Server to Standby server [ID 739522.1]
I once work with an SE who we called "The human firewall". It was always the firewall until proven otherwise.

alert log file is generated daily or it will be updated daily?

When oralce starts every first time, oracle does create a alert log file and whenever oracle wants to update the alertlog file, it updates the existing one and in case of missing alert log, it re-create the alert log and updates it.
    >>
is trace file part of alert log file or its a seperate file?

    No.
    >>

    >>
alert log contains database activities list carried out in the related database.
trace file can be generated due to number of reasons, like, hardware problems, due to oracle internal errors, user errors, whenever you trace a session and etc.

  • File Based logging: Control file name based on calling service

In the file logging, I need to change the "Prefix" and "Suffix" that I can type in, from page "FILE Transport Configuration" while creating
business service with transfort: File. I need to be able to supply these values for the file name from proxy service activity.
I am creating as logging proxy service which will be called from all the other proxy services. I am planning to use logging to File System based on
BS for achieving this. I need to be able to create a new file with name that corresponds to the calling service. How can I achieve this?
Also this service should be able to turn logging on or off based on the calling service. I should be able to turn off the logging completely or
turn off the logging only for few services.
What is the best way to achieve this?

  • Newb Question regarding Same InDesign CS4 file used on two different computers.

Probably been answered 1,000 times or is common knowledge, but I could not get it narrowed down using the search feature.
I would like to take an InDesign CS4 file ( a book) created on my imac, and work on it while away on a macbook pro with identical InDesign CS4 software. I will only be changing layout and some text, but will not be modifying anything that is a link other than re-sizing.
After doing this, will I be able to put the updated file into my imac and be ready to go, or am I playing with fire? If I might do more harm than good, I will not do it. It's just that I have a big project due and I have to be out of town for 3 days and would like to work on it if I can while I'm gone.
    Thanks for any input,
    Sebastian Gaeta

If you only copy the InDesign file then yes, preflight will alert you to the missing links. Just ignore it, or package the file and transfer the links, too.
Better yet, get yourself a membership to Dropbox. With Dropbox installed on both computers you can keep the entire job (up to 2 GB) in one folder and the files will sync to Dropbox’s servers, which will then sync to all computers sharing that folder. Open InDesign file on Mac 1, make changes, close file. Open file on Mac 2, make changes, close file. Open file on Mac 1 and the changes will be there. Best of all, you can go to Dropbox’s website and access a file’s history. This means you can go back to previous version of the file if you need to.
I add a folder to my Dropbox folder for any current job. When I’m done I move the files out and archive them.
    Self serving link: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTUwMDUyOTI5
If you sign up using the above link I get a tiny increase in my allotted storage.

  • Question regarding the itunes library files when moving itunes library from 1 hard drive to another.

My itunes library had out grown my 2TB drive (I'm a bit of a podcast addict) so I got a 4TB drive to replace it but for some reason my Mac Pro started to act up and eventually apps became crippled to where they would not open.
So I had no choice but to go back to my 2TB drive for my boot drive for now but my itunes library is now slightly larger than the 2TB drive and won't fit so with my previous 4TB drive connected via a hard drive dock I followed the instructions to move my itunes library to a secondary 4TB drive in my mac pro and that went fine the one thing I noticed is in the article it says not to move the 2 library files but now my itunes media is on a internal drive and the 2 library files are on the hard drive connected to my mac pro via the dock so if I was to remove the drive from the dock the 2 library files would no longer be accessable and my itunes library would not be able to be found even though the media in on one of my internal drives.
Anyone know how I can rectify this issue?

Does this article help: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305451 ?

  • Questions regarding Alerts

I am wondering how Alerts are supposed to work in the following scenarios:
    1. Alerts associated with a query has no output.  Does the alert still trigger and show up in the inbox eventhough there no output as result of the query?  For exemple. Alert is set up for every hour and is associated to a query to show all Sales orders with Open status.  If no orders have status= open, will the alert still trigger every hour showing no orders?
    2. Some alerts that are set up to trigger every hour does not show up in the inbox. They basically do not trigger for some reason.  What would cause an alert not to trigger as per specied time?  Does the time format have an influence on this? ( 12hr VS 24hr clock setting)
    Thanks,
    Alain

    Hi
Just to make things simple :
Alerts are triggered when it met your condition . If the condition is not met , alert doesn't work as it doesn't meet the necessary requirement .
    For example
If sales Order discount is greater than 10%,please alert manager
But if your sales order is not greater than 10%,alert won't catch even you set it up as different time frame .
If you are planning to catch an event based on time frame ,it can be done but a liitle bit complicated .
    Hope this helps

  • ORA.00600 Error in alert log file

    Hi all,
I'm using Enterprise Linux Red hat 5 OS and Oracle version 10.2.0.1.0
I checked alert log file, yesterday i got this error,

Heap size 3784K exceeds notification threshold (2048K) *
    how to solve this issue?
    thanks in advance

    Hello,
ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kksfbc-reparse-infinite-loop], [0xB7F8F6B4], [], [], [], [], [], []For this kind of error you should open a Service Request to My Oracle Support and, send them all the information you can (Alert log, trace files, ...).
More over, as you are in *10.2.0.1*, you may apply the latest patchset to the Database (10.2.0.4 / 10.2.0.5). Sometime, ORA-00600 may be due to a Bug. So, perhaps, by chance, applying a Patch set can help to solve this kind of issue.
Anyway, first of all, contact the Support.
    Hope this help.

  • Spfile versus control file

    Dear All,
I have a question about spfile and control file. Now I backed up database daily with spfile. And since I have set the rman configuration about "CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF;". It seems I don't have control file backup. Suppose one day, i need to recover my database from the backup and the control file is gone. Could I restore the control file from either backup(which should be the case) or spfile? Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Ke Lin

    Hi lik!
Controlfile and SPFile are two different things. Let's say the controlfile is the heart of your database. It holds the complete databasestructure. That is the path+filename of all datafiles and redologs. To loose the controlfile is a very bad thing. Becaus in that case you can't recover to the lates point in time and you have to hope that you even have an old controlfile. That means: Without controlfile no recovery!!!! The SPFile holds the instanceparameters for your instance. The loose of that is not as critical as the loose of the controfile. There are many ways to regain a SPFile. e. g. all instanceparameters used for an instancestart are listed in the alert log file. It's not very easy but you may use them to rebuild your spfile. As a conclusion I recommend you to enable CONTROFILE AUTOBACK to get a backup of control- and SPFile every time you make a databasebackup.
Hope that's what you wanna know.
    yours sincerely

  • Creating a Control File

I have a question about creating another control file. If I want to create another control file, do I need to put the values/paths of the current control files in the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement?

    996403 wrote:
If I am wanting to create a new control file, do you recommend:
    1. Use the Create Control file statementWhen to Create New Control Files:
All control files for the database have been permanently damaged/missing and you do not have a control file backup.
You want to change one of the permanent database parameter settings originally specified in the CREATE DATABASE statement.
These settings include the database name and the following parameters: MAXLOGFILES, MAXLOGMEMBERS, MAXLOGHISTORY, MAXDATAFILES, and MAXINSTANCES.
For example, you would change a database name if it conflicted with another database name in a distributed environment,
or you would change the value of MAXLOGFILES if the original setting is too low.
    2. Copy an existing control file and then edit the parameter file?i will recommend 2nd (if you have healthy control file) if you want multiplex control files.

  • Database creation having a trace of the control file

    Hi,
I want to move a database from one server let's say A to another server let's say B I have a copy of all the datafiles, redo logs, control files and init file of the database fron the server A. I have a trace of the control file.
I copied all these files on the server B in the location /dispecer_date/oradata, except init which is in ORACLE_HOME/dbs
I thought that the simplest method to recreate the database is from the backup of the control file writing in sql the command CREATE CONTROLFILE how is written in trace and replacing the word REUSE with the word SET in CREATE CONTROLFILE instruction.
    I obtained an error:
    ORA-01503: Create controlfile failed
ORA-01160: file is not a data file
    ORA-01110: datafile: '/dispecer_date/oradata/system.dbf'
Why? The db_block_size parameter is 4096.
    Thank you,
    Mihaela

    Here are the steps .....
    sql > shutdown immediate ;
create identical dir structure on server b
copy all datafile, controlfile, redologfiles and pfile to target server ,And put them in same dir as of source.
    now on taget server
sql > startup mountpfile = path of the pfile
    sql > alter database opn
    or
    sql > alter database open resetlogs ;
this will do the trick, I don;t think recreating the controlfile is a good option hare , becuse you likly to loose some data if you stick on that one.

  • Question about HSL Develop Controls vs. Photoshop Selective Color

Im an advanced Photoshop user and I enjoy shooting landscapes, macros and abstracts. Ive just started to experiment with Lightroom and have used it to process several hundred shots from a recent trip to the California Coast.
Even though my usage of the next Develop controls in Lightroom is still pretty limited, I find the new Basic Develop and Tone Controls to be very intuitive to use and Im getting better results than I could from Adobe Camera Raw 3.7 and earlier. Therefore, kudos to the Lightroom team.
But, I also have some questions regarding the HSL controls and what seems to be an omission of some useful functionality. To help with framing my question lets assume that we have shot of a waterfall in the forest. The waterfall is in partial shade and the rest of the scene is in partial to full sun. Also the histogram for image indicates that a blend of several bracketed images isnt needed to deal with the overall dynamic range within the scene.
If I was processing this shot in Photoshop, I would likely adjust the overall White Balance / Exposure / Black Clip / Contrast / Brightness in Camera Raw and then finish the image within Photoshop. Since the water of the waterfall described above is in the shade, it will likely have a color cast relative to the White Balance that I set for the rest of the image that is full sun.
With Photoshop, I would often set a couple of sample points and then use a Selective Color layer to correct for the color cast in the whites of the water and to neutralize the blacks in the shade. I would also sometimes increase the amount of black in the Selective Color Blacks tab to enhance the image contrast. These adjustments could have layer masks associated with them but for this example lets assume that the dont need any mask. Thus, I would hope that I could accomplish the same type of globally based whites and blacks color cast removal within Lightroom but I cant seem to find a way to accomplish this.
With Lightroom, I see that there are a set of HSL controls that should be able to handle much of what Selective Color could handle on a global level within Photoshop but I dont see any controls to deal with the Whites or Blacks. Am I missing something? Is there a way to accomplish the type of correction that I described above with Lightroom or am I going to have to take the image out to Photoshop and use Curves and/or Selective Color?
    Dave

Fred, Richard - Thanks for responding.
I've tried the TAT tool but it only controls the colors controlled by the sliders in the HSL palette. Therefore, it doesn't seem to have any affect on the hue of the whites or blacks in a picture.
Regarding selective editing, I realize the the controls within Lightroom are global but unless I use a Layer Mask the Selective Color functionality within Photoshop is also global. That is, if I change the hue of the blacks then all blacks are affected. Hence, it seems to me that the HSL controls within Lightroom and the CYMK controls within Selective color can be used to do much the same thing. The big difference is that the Selective Color control set include the ability to adjust blacks and whites but this isn't included within Lightroom.
I also posted my message in the ACR forum as ACR 4.0 is going to include the same set of controls that the Develop module in Lightroom contains. Someone there suggested that I might be able to use the split toning controls to warm up the shadows and I will give this a try. I also plan to post in the Feature Requests Forum.
    Thanks again for your help.
    Dave
