Quicklook won't preview my MOV or MP4 files

I've noticed this every since I upgraded to Yosemite. Never seemed to be an issue until now. Is it possible I have a plugin or something that's not supported? There really isn't too much out of the ordinary on my Mac.
When I press the space bar, the box spins for a second and then only an image appears previewing the video. At the top right all it says is "Open in Quicktime."

I have this problem too. I feel like I should post in a plugin forum, but maybe I can test if my problem is your problem.
I installed a qlgenerator that makes non-quicklook formats like flv, mkv, avi, ect. at least show a thumbnail in the quicklook.
I can't remember what it's called, it was something weird.
I'm wondering if that qlgenerator is overriding the system Quicktime .mov qlgenerator, because it shows a thumbnail instead of the movie for certain .MOV files, I think it's the ones with some kind of H.260 something codec that it got when I exported from Quicktime and those ones don't play in Quicklook because of the 3rd party plugin. MOV's downloaded from the internet do however play fine.
I should delete the plugin, but I like the QL thumbnail for odd formats, and frankly I don't remember what it was called.
Also wondering if there is a qlgenerator manager, like with a UI. I've never heard of such a thing, but I find the process of digging deep into the system folder tedious, also Finder GET INFO would be nice if it told a description of all these mystery qlgenerators I've installed over the years.

  • Just upgraded to Lion and can no longer import any .mov files ("file not supported") to 3.1.3.  Also can no longer view any .mov or .mp4 files already in library.

Have been using Aperture 3.1.3 with no problems.  Importing from a Nikon D80 (RAW & JPEG), Casio (.MOV) and Flip (.mp4).  Could import and view all videos without issue prior to Lion upgrade.  After Lion installation, can no longer import .mov files (get "file not supported" error) or even view any .mov or .mp4 files currently in library (even though thumbnail is present).  Can watch the .mov files directly on my camera using Quicktime in Finder but can't even drag & drop that file into Aperture.  Anybody else having similar problems?

Still no resolution and Geniuses at store could not assist.  Unfortunately, it looks like not all the applications were ready to support the Lion operating system.  We could not import any .mov files, could no longer view any .mov files already in my Aperture library and could not email any .mov files.  Totally frustrated.  Use Aperture almost daily and can't lose the video functionality.  Was also running dog-slow.  Constantly looking at the spinning wheel.  Geniuses suggested that I wipe out hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Had full backup on external drive with Time Machine.
Not an easy process though...had to reinstall several times (at 5 hours each time) because I continued to have issues.  Finally figured out that I needed to delete every backup file from Time Machine on external drive from the date I installed Lion because some of the hidden files were still migrating back to Snow Leopard.
    I had to:
    1. Delete all time machine backup files from date/time of Lion installation forward
    2. Do "clean" installation of Snow Leopard (wiped hard drive using disk utility and booted with Snow Leopard disc)
    3. Chose option to reinstall from backup off Time Machine which eventually got me back to Snow Leopard desktop
    4. Deleted Aperture program and reinstalled (I had to install Aperture 2 and then install Aperture 3 upgrade.
    5. Reinstalled iLife apps
    5. Applied all Apple updates available (again this took a few hours because there were several updates from Snow Leopard's original release plus Aperture 3 and other application updates)
Still doing some tweaking on some of my other apps but got everything back to where I originally was.  Now plan to wait on a few version updates from Lion before reinstalling.
I am one of Apple's biggest fans, but was very disappointed in the fact that I lost functionality in one of their own pieces of software (which I use the most!)  by installing Lion.

  • Why won't preview let me delete all files (instead of all but one)

In all OSX versions up to snow leopard in preview there was the option to select all open items and move the files to the trash. For some reason unknown to me, in 10.8.5 mountain lion that option no longer exists. Now preview lets me delete all files except one. If you have 2 images open you can move 1 to the trash. If you have 99 open you can move 98 to trash and if you have 1 open, you cannot move it to trash. Is there some code available where I can undo this restriction?

Do you also have them on another computer, iPad or iPhone,  IF you do then it may be syncing them back

  • Does anyone know how to move a .mp4 file from flixter into iTunes?

I have downloaded a digital copy of a movie that I received when I purchased a Bluray disc.  Most of the time, these go directly into iTunes, but this one went into Flixter.  It is an .mp4 file.  I tried using Add File to Library, but it didn't work.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Never mind - got it figured out!!

  • Does anyone know if MOV or MP4 files from the JVC GY-HM150U will work with the Camera Connection Kit and then be readable by iMovie or similar apps?

The JVC GY-HM150U camera and others in it's line say they offer recording in two different formats:
    Native .MOV format
Fastest HD shoot to edit workflow. Edit immediately on Final Cut Pro™ or Premiere™ without conversion or transcoding
    Native .MP4(XDCAM-EX™) format
    Native File Recording
Because it uses QuickTime™ as its native file format, the GY-HM150U is the perfect choice for users of Apple's Final Cut Pro™ editing system. Both HD and SD MOV files recorded by the camcorder can be dropped directly into Final Cut Pro™, keeping them first-generation and eliminating the time-consuming process of file conversion. For users of all major NLE systems, including solutions from Adobe, Avid, Grass Valley, Vegas and Apple, the GY-HM150U supports the MP4 file format, which can be brought into your editing system without re-encoding.

Any knowledge, especially first hand testing, would be greatly appreciated!

Changes made to correct the recorded file paths.

Excuse the late post but just wondering if you came up with a solution for this problem? I experienced the exact same issue but copying the movies from Aperture into iTunes (which worked) still didn't allow them to be played on the iPad. As they had played faultlessly when imported directly from the camera connection kit!

  • Quicklook won't preview certain custom icons

I was rather proud when I found Tranformers png files with transparency (from http://www.michaelbay.com/blog/files/d58812e5a390e8b3a44162285e4ae054-74.html ) and immediately set about changing my Leopard and Vista volume icons. Unfortunately, neither icon will preview in Quicklook or in Finder's Coverflow view. However, they both show as normal icons on my desktop.
How can I get them to show in Quicklook and in the Finder's Coverflow view? I have found that these icons once pasted onto a folder's icon (in a get info window) will make the folder not be visible in quicklooking or in coverflowing, so maybe I have to convert the icons... any ideas?

There is something very strange about them indeed. I have a collection of pngs that I use as icons, you open the png file in Preview, select Edit->Copy, then select the file or folder you want to use the icon on, do GetInfo and Paste. Presto changeo, the png is now the icon on the item. It shows up in CoverFlow no problem. When I tried that with one of the pngs from the site the folder was invisible in Coverflow. Weird. I though perhaps there was some mysterious change in 10.5.2 so I downloaded one of my own png files, did the same thing again, using it, and no problem. Just like always. I decided maybe the original transformer png was just too bloody big (although I have no idea why that would make any difference), so I tried resize to a max of 512 pixels, then resaved with a different name. Still a no go. So I reopened it in Preview, then did a Save as... and saved it as a Photoshop file (psd), opened the psd version in Preview, copied it, pasted it as the icon onto a folder, and it worked--briefly. The folder with the icon was visible in Coverflow, and then it disappeared again! Never seen the like. I used my Automator workflow to add an icon to the original file, copied that in GetInfo and pasted, and it worked just fine. So it looks like the only way is create a custom thumbnail using something like CocoaThumbX or VitaminSee, then copy the custom icon from the file. The shortcoming is that those icons are only 128x128, so they are a bit smallish for good display if the Coverflow section is very big.

  • Is XMP import/export for MOV/MTS/MP4 files not supported?

I have been evalutating LR4 and am stuck on how to import my files from another DAM into LR4.
I am able to write XMP into JPG files, and provide sidecar XMP files for RAW (CR2) and MOV/MP4/MTS files, writing my hierarchical keyword information into the xmp-dc:Subject and xmp-lr:HierarchicalSubject fields.
LR4 seems to read the XMP keywords from the JPG and RAW files just fine and re-creates my keyword hierarchy.
LR4 seems to ignore on import the XMP for the non-image files such as the MOV/MP4/MTS files for which I have provided sidecar files.
LR4 also does not write out XMP files for the non-image files, when I use save Medatada.
Does LR4 just ignore import/writing XMP for these non-image files?
    Thanks,

MTS files can't really accept metadata embedding -your best bet is to use ClipWrap to "re-wrap" AVCHD/MTS files into MOV files.
This still does not fix the problem of LR not writing XMP data to video files. Unfortunately, if you want to have metadata that stays with your MOV files, you'll want to use something aside form LR4 -I wouldn't bother doing much video cataloging in LR4.

  • CC2014.1 Vers8.1 Caravan crashes every time i try to play or drop a clip on a timeline ( .mov and .mp4 )

I've just moved to CC today, I have used CS5 for the last few years.
After importing my footage and arranging in bins, every time i try t even play a lip or drop one onto a timeline the program crashes.
It won't even play the clip in the small preview window, but it does give me a preview frame.
Audio opens up fine and plays fine and drops to timeline fine, however it splits the clips into L+R, is there a way to stop that as it happens even on a mono track?
I'm sure it's something silly with  setting i haven't done or something but can anyone help?
Happens on .mov and .mp4 files.
Even if i bring in an old project from CS5 it will allow me and the timelines look fine, but if i try to replace a clip from the project folder to the timeline it crashes!

  • Converting .mov to MP4

What is a good third party software that would help convert .mov to MP4 files? I have already downloaded freeware from MacX, but don't want to pay $30 for the full length download if I can't get their sampler to work.

In  H.264 export settings go to the Multiplexer tab and switch from 3GPP to MP4.  Your output file extention should change from .3gp to .mp4

  • Splitting or Dividing an MP4 file into Separate Files

I have been importing several VHS tapes with Elgato Video Capture to an external hard drive. I have several MP4 files. Some of the movie files have video from different subjects that I would like to split up. When I open them into Quicktime and copy and paste the section I want to a new Quicktime file why can I not just save the file in the format it was copied from?
I don't want to have to import these into iMovie and re-export the video. I already have it in the format and size I want. Is there a way to just grab sections from these files and save them as is?
I'm doing this on my MacBook not my G5 listed in my sig.

When I open them into Quicktime and copy and paste the section I want to a new Quicktime file why can I not just save the file in the format it was copied from?
If you are using QT 7 Pro, you can/are already doing so. However, QT Pro saves the segments in their original compression formats to an MOV file container. If your files are MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC you can perform the same segmentation actions using MPEG Streamclip (free) and save the files to either MOV or MP4 file containers. If you are using QT X for segmentation, then it works essentially the same as QT 7 Pro but by default writes the original data to an MOV file container without the .mov designation.
Also when I export as it take way too long.
The "Export" option normally re-compresses the video which is what takes so long.
Why can't I just save and put in a name? It's already encoded and rendered.
You can. Simply select the icon after it has been saved, click on the name to open the name editing box, and change it to whatever you want as long as the name is valid within file naming restrictions. (e.g., regarding length, characters, etc.)
Why does it have to act like it's a brand new file?
It is a "brand new file." Apple may have done this as part of a "do no harm" approach to prevent novice users from overwriting the original file and, thus, losing their original data for which the user may or may not have further use. As to why it doesn't offer you the opportunity to change the name, maybe you should request this option and a future enhancement. Since the name is easily changed in any case, it is not a "biggie" for me.

Answered my own problem. With my iskysoft imedia converter I would convert the movies with H.264 with a MP4 file extension and they would not load into the ipod classic. But when i use the .m4v the movies are saved with the H.264 codec and they load easily onto the pod!
