Quicktime Movie on Website

I just received a new tech movie form Europe. It's a .mpg file which opens and reads fine in QT. However, the file is HUGE, 236MB, and I would like to link it to my website where people will be able to view via streaming. Now I have other QT files which do this just fine but can someone tell me what the process is for taking a file compressing it to a manageable size and exporting to a file type that would be suitable for streaming over the web?
Thanks in advanced.

Potential responders may want to know if you are actually referring to Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) files or QT Fast Start "streaming" files. In either case the conversion process would likely require an MPEG based conversion application like MPEG Streamclip (free) or ffmpefgX (free) to preserve .mpg (assumed to be MPEG-1) files. The file size of the end product would, of course, depend on display size, quality requirements for audio and video encoding, and choice of format likely to be based on all of the previous considerations, as well as, compatibility with operating systems, browsers, and software version.

• After 10.6.8. Quicktime movies on my website won't play. Others on iMac, ipad even PC no problem. There is no way to install other version as they are all earlier. Message says I may need to install additional download? What?

HELP! I have a MacBook Pro purchased 12/10. My website has two quicktime movies embedded. After 10.6.8. these website movies will not play on my computer.
NO ONE Else has the problem. I can play the movies from a file on my MacBook Pro purchased 12/10. Movie works on my ipad and iphone. Friends with iMac, PC etc. have no problem. ANy ideas? My website can't open them on my computer. I suspect there is lots of security stuff that is preventing the open.

Nothing opens when that URL is opened in QuickTime Player.
True "Streaming" files require hint tracks be included in the file.

• Why are my Quicktime movies not loading on my website?

I am having trouble viewing the Quicktime movies that I embedded on my website (www.karenychan.com).
I never had this problem until I upgraded to Firefox 4.
The videos would sometimes load, and sometimes the page would be blank with no indication whether or not it is in the process of loading. This is a huge problem when someone comes to my website and sees nothing. The only way to load the videos is to hit refresh, but viewers won't know to do that.
Please go through the videos here:
http://www.karenychan.com/video_open_close.html
and here:
http://www.karenychan.com/installation_1.html
Click through all the pages and you'll see the problem happens randomly.
Is there a problem with my HTML code?

You might have some sort of a trial version of Flip4Mac on your computer... I seem to remember that the old demo only let you export 20 seconds...
But my memory is fading in later years.
What are you using to export to wmf - Quicktime alone won't do it...

• Quicktime movies are not playing in a particular website

Quicktime movies are not displaying on the catalogue pages of the Science Photo Library website - one url below - but they are displaying on their demo movie pages.
We're running Firefox 3.6.6 on XP Pro SP2 with the QT 7.6.6 plugin. The Library have tried this but say it's working for them; we have two machines here that can't see these catalogue movies.
When clicking one of the icons to launch a preview movie, the QT either shows a question mark, but which is unclickable, or is white. In the latter case you can click the playhead, but it doesn't start the movie. Also, if you right click these, you get the options you would see if you don't have QT Pro installed, ie. the Save options have 'Pro' in front of them. We do have Pro licenses.
We also have the VLC player and plugin installed. Disabling that in Firefox makes no difference though.
Thanks.
Julian.

Hello Julian.
You probably need to contact Apple for support on QuickTime. And maybe the site's owner... This isn't likely to be a Firefox problem.

• Pros and cons of quicktime movie or YouTube on your website?

Hello All,
I want to add a short movie to my website and I have watched the tutorials on adding a quicktime movie and a YouTube movie to your website.
However, they didn't say what the pros and cons were. Is it better to add a quicktime movie to your site or a link to YouTube.
How easy or hard is it to add a link to Vimeo?
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
Mike

Hi Michael,
The pros of hosting the movie yourself on your .me website is that you have control over the content in your movie; if you put copyrighted music in your video and upload it to youtube and they recognize it (and they usually do) no one will be able to view the video on youtube without being logged in to youtube as you.
The cons are that if you upload movies to iweb, you'll be using some bandwidth every time someone watches it, and there is a limit to what is include with the mobile me subscription.
Adding a youtube video embedded in your site is easy. Just use the HTML snippet (or did they update one just for you tube?) and copy the "embed" information from the file on you tube, and paste it in the html window. easy as pie.
I don't know anything about "Vimeo" but any links are easy if you're leaving your site and sending a clicker to the page with what you want to show. Embedding is easy if they give you embed tools at the site you want to borrow from (like youtube does).

• What to use and how to convert a quicktime movie for a website. . .

I have a handful of Quicktime movies on my computer that I have edited and then coverted to MPeg4, AVI and mov. Now what I need to do is to get the to flash to put on my webpage. How exactly would I go about this?

You would start by purchasing software that can create Flash Video (.flv).

• IWeb and Quicktime Movie Upload 2013

Three or so years ago, I made a website using iWeb (the last version Apple produced; i.e. the current version), and I included some videos. The videos were from a digital (tape) video camera, edited with iMovie HD, and were old-format 640x480. I managed to work out how to set the movies to start quickly (before fully loading) using iMovie and QuickTime. I dropped the movie into a regular iWeb page, resized it, put the settings up with the iWeb inspector, and all was well. The movies played (and still play) on Safari and Firefox, on my Macs and on an Asus Windows machine I have. (They won't play on my iPad - if anyone can tell me why, I'd be grateful; I'll probably put the original DV through a more recent version of iMovie and QT, and upload again.)
I want to make another similar website. However, my camera is now a HD tape model, and I have made my peace with iMovie '11 and worked out how to use it. My machine is the latest Mac Mini, and so QT is the latest also. I run Mountain Lion.
I made a movie with iMovie '11, and exported a quality version. I opened it in QT and chose 'Export for Web' and selected the option which gives me three different sizes. After some struggles, I worked out how to put this into my uploaded iWeb (test) site (although I have to say that the instructions Apple's QT gives are not the clearest), and it works, even on my iPad.
My questions concern the code which QT says you should upload. The code in the
, I understand, and it's obviously necessary to play the movie.
But about the
tag QT says:
Please note, to properly validate as XHTML, the tag and the first

However, the movie playback still seems to work without uploading the code for the
of the page. And there is NO tag, and why only the FIRST

Questions:
1. Should I put the QT code in the
tag anyway, even though it seems to work without it?
2. If I don't put it in, does that mean the choice between the three movies doesn't take place? I don't have a smartphone, but the playback on my 27" screen, my Asus netbook, and on my iPad all look fine without the head code.
3. If I do put it in, where exactly do I put it, and do I need to replace any of the code that is already there?
4. The original iWeb drag and drop method still seems to work fine with movies direct from iMovie (and plays even on my iPad), but obviously you can only put one version of the movie on a page. Is there still a good reason for using the multi-size version which involves manually uploading the movie and opening the page after uploading and inserting code for every movie? For example, I have a very fast internet connection. Maybe it's kind to those with a slower connection to put up the smaller movies also?
And, since I'm here, I have a couple of slightly related questions:
5. I designed my site (it's non-commercial, just a trip report, but with a lot of pages) to not need any scrolling even on quite a small desktop screen (you click on from page to page like a book, but you can also navigate around sections more easily this way; anyway that's how I like it). But on the iPad, held horizontally, the width is resized to take up the full width of the sceen, so you then need to scroll down. It's really annoying me. Is there some code I could put in to tell the iPad not to do this (there are plenty fewer vertical pixels on my website's pages than on the iPad screen)? (I don't care about phones, because the site is photo-based so looking at it on a phone is pointless in my opinion. And netbooks with only 768 vertical pixels are not particularly important to me either, but the iPad screen is plenty big enough for the site to work the way I want it to.)
6. And I want to include slideshows of photos without using the iWeb/iPhoto system (which brings up an external window in a different colour). I want the user to be able to see the thumbnails, to start and stop an on-page slideshow, and for me to be able to put captions (descriptions) with the slides. There seem to be a lot of options, and I still haven't finished looking at all the ones I got from the web. But does anyone have a good recommendation - paid or free?
Thanks for reading this long thread, and for any advice.

See the second method described on this page for how to add the code to an HTML Snippet...
http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Website-Movie-Video/Poster-Movie.html
The prefered method of playing movies on websites is to use an HTML5 player with flash fallback for older browsers. Using this method, you can get away with only one video file - an MP4.
In this section of iWeb for Musicians you can see examples of several different types of flash fallback players...

I have quicktime movie files on a hard drive, and normally when I plug the hard drive into my computer, I can open the quicktime files and watch them. Now when I am doing it, the quicktime movies are opening up with a black screen. How do i convert it to be in the right format to be able to watch ?

I plugged my old drive into an identical Vostro and saved my bookmarks per the instructions. Later, when I check the file, it was in html format. While waiting for the replacement laptop to arrive, I put my old (Vostro) hard drive into a case so I could access the files. I have been able to launch web pages from the file bt accessing them through My Documents so I know the file is good. The problem is, I apparently need to convert them into a JSON file in order to use them. There is a set of instructions on the Mozilla/Firefox website but that method does not work.

• Interactive quicktime movie from keynote doesn't stream correctly on web

hello,
Any help with this would be extremely appreciated as I've been trying to solve the problem for 3 days straight. I've created an interactive slide show in keynote and now want to stream it on my website. The problem is that the finished product, a QuickTime movie keeps re-starting when it reaches the first interactive link until the movie is completely loaded. At that point it then correctly stops at the first link but by this time it has looped the beginning of my movie three times. I've tried figuring out a way to partially load the movie before it starts playing through JavaScript to no avail. I'd like to avoid loading the whole movie before starting it due to its length. If I have to pre-load the entire movie, I'd like a status bar for loading but controls hidden while it plays.
Help please!

Welcome to the discussions, Christopher.
Over in the Keynote discussions we've been going over this for quite awhile. Unfortunately, there's no easy solution to your problem. I've even gone as far as attempting to preload the chapter track thinking that might solve the problem, but it doesn't work.
One thing I don't think I've tried is setting up the first slide to advance "on-click" so that there's no animation before the first transition. The problem, of course, is that there's no "loading" animation to let it know when it's ready to go.
Another thing I haven't tried but that might work is to create the movie so that it doesn't autoplay, and then, using the embed commands, set autoplay to be the full length of the movie (so that it will automatically play, but only after it's completely downloaded). Look here for the autoplay embed commands.

• Resizing Quicktime Movies for use in iWeb + published to .mac

Hey everyone,
I have some home movies I want to post on my .mac website but the files are just too big. The movies are already in Quicktime format from my camera. It just takes forever to upload and forever to download when you view the site.
How do I go about dropping the file size of my quicktime movies? Any suggestions should be helpful.
Thanks

Smart move to get QT Pro! It will now be possible to do this:
When exporting From iMovie or Final Cut, the expert settings choices can be daunting to understand. Here's a simple solution. Whenever you find a QT video online that has the download arrow (down facing arrow) at the far right of the play time line and you're impressed by the quality you see, once the movie has fully loaded, click on that arrow.
With QT Pro you'll see a drop down menu appear that offers 'Save as Source' or 'Save as QuickTime Movie'. Usually either choice gives you the same type of file. Save to your desktop . Then open and play. As the movie plays, go to the Quicktime menu at the top of your screen and choose from 'Window' ...Show Movie Info. Eureka! There are almost all the settings used to create that movie
To keep a photo record of this movies settings (if you don't keep the movie) line the player and the info window side to side and do a Apple key+Shift +4 targeted picture snap. Store the pic you just created in an iPhoto folder labeled 'QT Info Pics' as a later reference. In fact, Apple key+ Shift + 4 (targeted) or Apple key + Shift + 3 (Full Screen capture) used with 'Get Info' windows and iPhoto storage is a great quick & easy record keeping system.
Have fun!
Wayne
PS Been to Memphis, loved it. Irmla Thomas has a great CD called My Heart's In Memphis
PSS Once dragged to an iWeb page you can alter the physical size (reasonable amount) of your movie while file size stays the same.
